Something that stood out about OTGW is that autumn also seems to signify the transition between childhood and adolescence. The juxtaposition of Wurt and Greg reads to me as comparing the sunshine of childhood with the turbulence of adolescence. The insecurity, fear, and doubt Wurt feels when navigating The Unknown can track back to his feelings about the casette and what it signifies (forays into relationships, growing up). This series captures (for me) the autumn of childhood. Greg with his teapot and frog and trust stand in stark contrast.
Hopefully this makes sense; they're just loosely connected thoughts that came up. :) Thank you for this video!

Man, I love autumn so much
It’s incredible that there’s a show that somehow manages to capture everything I love about it
It’s a shame that, just like over the garden wall, autumn is so short
Only about a month and a half, and all of October is spent enjoying the Spooky Season- there’s just not enough fall :’)

Something about the weird time setting of the 1800s but also 80s aesthetic feels nostalgic and the tone set by the music is erie but not quite suspenseful enough to be horror full. You’re just stuck between nostalgia and suspense and it creates their weird feeling of relaxed yet your gard isn’t down

The soundtrack of Over the Garden Wall is so atmospheric, the only thing I can think of that emulates the feeling it exudes is the atmospheric music found at the Disney parks. It's a very specific sound that tickles your imagination, it's music that you can see and feel. The art-style and soundtrack fit so well tonally it's difficult to picture one without the other.

If you do want vintage autumn in book form, I highly recommend The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valentine. She really explores this sort of transitional nature of autumn throughout her book in a timeless American setting, down to the very appearance of our main cast. The main character is named September and she wholly embraces the meaning behind her name.
Also, Paranorman. It's an interesting rebuke and a celebration of Northeastern Americana with horror elements focused on the wilderness and its uncontrollability.

I know I’m late to this masterpiece but something else of importance that really emphasizes your argument that I’m surprised you didn’t mention is the fact that the actual season changes to winter within the show! Autumn is the moment where life and death coexist, as things begin to die while other things continue holding on, as you said. This is seen in the show with the fact that the unknown is a form of afterlife, or more accurately, purgatory. However, as the boys remain lost, the leaves lose their color. The trees become barren. Finally, in the last two/three episodes, the snow starts to fall. Winter has arrived now that Wirt has given up. The season of bleak, cold, and death seizes the show, and The Beast no longer has the canopy to hide within, but he doesn’t need it, the darkness and thick fog of winter are more than enough, and as such we see The Beast at his most prominent in winter, just as we see Wirt at his lowest in winter. Winter even manages to claim Greg, someone of pure determination and the antithesis to the beast. While Greg allowed for it to happen by wishing he replaced Wirt, its symbolic nonetheless. I absolutely love this show, and any excuse to talk about the deeper themes will be seized where i can lmfao!

Over the Garden Wall and Gravity Falls have very, very similar aesthetics and feelings they leave in the back of your head, but they are different.
(A short explanation because these are my special interests: Where OTGW is Late Fall - harvest, hauntings, etc., GF is Early Fall - starting school, late summer rain, etc. The kind of vintage that OTGW embodies is victorian-does-colonial-America, while GF embodies that 1970s-early 1980s sci-fi academia vintage. Very very similar flavors but OTGW has that feel of watercolor child memory, which makes it hit just a tiny bit closer to home for me.)

Also oh god I once had an old Scottish woman describe the winter to me, and it went something like this: "An Dubhlachd (meaning "December", coming from the word for "blackness", "darkness") is when everything dies and the nights creep over into the day. And An Faoilleach (January) is when the wolf is at the door and the roads are frozen solid, and it's not over when the calendar says it is, it's not over until the winds come from over the sea. And An Gearran (February, coming from the word "to cut") is when the wind goes straight through your coat and your sweater and your dad's thermal and your skin, and only when they die down is it finally spring again."

    This dude's voice is autumn
And autumn has that kind of comfort like you're on a bus with a few people and it is only silent except for the hustling and bustling of the bus.
You go down this huge hill and you see the type of sunset that is only seen so rarely behind a city
Silhouetting the sharp edges of high bustling city.
You see it for a minute maybe more maybe less
But when you see that everything fades away
It's just you and the silhouette of the city
    It's burnt into your memory.
It will never be done again
    And you know it
No matter what you do or say
No matter if you're the best artist or the best author
You can't replicate that beauty through anything
But you take everything in anyway
It's an act of cruelty because it will only exist in your mind and you will never have a way of expressing it
But it's an act of kindness to see such beauty only once in your life
And so the bus reaches the bottom of the hill
And the city fades behind houses.

Just watched OTGW again for Halloween and then watched this video. I love all the things you bring up and the way you summarize the first episode, I would love to know what else you might think of the Beast and what he represents too!

Well a lot of that depends on how you interpret the series as a whole because one of the most popular theories is that he's essentially the devil (having replaced scratch) and the unknown is purgatory. He spends his entire time trying to convince people to stay there as long as they can lost without any home until they lose hope and stay turning into the edelwood trees. In a literal sense he's hopelessness, fear, distrusting, deceit, and not only does be spread those things he feeds off them and is them. The "are you" line shows that really he too is always in fear of how easily he can die tho he puts a big show on. That's why he tricks people into thinking other people's souls are inside because even the Woodsman could've killed him easily. So it's mostly up to interpretation.

This show was airing during a time period when I was preparing to move cross country, away from New England. Since moving away I’ve been chasing the nostalgia that I got from living there, the locally inspired media I grew up with, and especially just how flawless the autumnal transition was. I finally remembered that this show existed during that important time in my life, and finally watched it. My. God. The amount of nostalgia I get from OTGW is unparalleled, it manages to effortlessly capture my childhood in New England like only hocus pocus has ever been able to do

Not sure if it’s seasonal but we’re gonna ignore that.

It actually surprises me to hear there was so much cut of OTGW. To me it always felt like a very perfect package, very well paced, doesn’t stick around to long, tells you what you need to know without over explaining.

They say the motion-picture is the greatest art form ever created, and few shows or movies embody that descriptions more than Over the Garden Wall. Like all great art, we can enjoy it at a cursory glance, but it really becomes something special the more you study, analyze, and interpret it. Great art is subjective, and this show reveals and hides just enough to be up for interpretation and speculation. Great art is purposeful and meaningful, and every stroke of the artist's paintbrush is careful and deliberate. This show works on so many levels, and every aspect of it can have some interpretation of it. Every time I watch this show, I notice or realize something I hadn't before. Great art evokes a unique style that serves to accentuate its hidden message, and this show does so masterfully. Great art is meant to be studied and analyzed, and this is certainly true for this show. Great art is beautiful to look at, and this show is absolutely gorgeous, both in its animation, backgrounds, music, themes, characters, and ideas. Great art is timeless, and this show isn't fading from anyone's memory anytime soon. This show is perhaps one of, if not THE greatest works of art from the past decade, and now, ten years later, it still holds up beautifully! This is Louvre-worthy artistic material. A true masterpiece. A true work of art in every sense of the word.

First us 90s kids "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" left a similar feeling but so much better...lol. And it has the best theme song of any show ever, it's a fact. Growing up in the 90s we had so many shows like this. There were so many autumn themed shorts I loved back then. Animated and live action. Hell even the adventures of p&p started as a short. I feel bad for people who weren't kids in the 90s.
