    1:55 Another fun fact (for me, at least), at one point in time my dad owned the only two left handed Broadcasters. Both were like the one pictured, all black, but one had a maple fretboard, rather than the ebony. He and his friend were collectors, had some pretty rare ones, they both agree that if looking to buy a G&L, just make sure its got a 3 bolt neck...thats what they were using when Leo was still around, and things started changing after he died. I have one of the 12 Asats from the first test batch of sparkle finishes, the flake in it is the smallest I've ever seen in any guitar ever and the clear coat has changed to a nice light green

    I was looking for the "perfect Fender Strat" for my needs basically since i play guitar, but since two years i tested all fenders up to arounf 1700€ but i have not found one that woun't want to mod... then by accident i tested a G&L and i immediatly bought it, i always wanted a fender strat but this G&L is just exactly what i wanted that i happily ignored the brand, it was simply that good

    I love G&L! I consider them to be a Fender on steroids. They are what Fender should have been and that's what George & Leo's intentions were....to polish up and finish what they started. Don't get me wrong...I'm a Fender fan as well. I've played them for years. And they have gotten their act together tremendously these last few years. But in order to get the quality of an off-the-shelf G&L, you almost need to go custom shop with Fender at a price at least 2x more expensive! G&L is the working man's guitar yet still competes with a custom shop "boutique" guitar.

    Here's a question about G & L - Fullerton, California was founded in 1887, and was named after George Fullerton, president of the Pacific Land and Improvement Co. George Fullerton the guitar maker was purportedly born in Arkansas, and moved to California as a teenager in 1940. Is the later George related to the town founder, is it just co-incidence that they have the same name, or are we dealing with a wily vampire, who has moved on to another town named Fullerton in 2009 after faking his own death?

    Was able to trade a guitar, amp, and pedal for a USA GL Strat earlier this year. Has become my favorite to play. Pickup clarity. Neck that actually fits my hands and plays well. Came with a case. Then traded another guitar I don't use for the guitar I traded away to get the GL.
    The GL Strat just played better and the pickups sounded better than any Fender Strat I had been trying as I was looking at Fender Strat's.

    Admittedly having a predilection for Gibson to some Gretch guitars, I have literally shunned Fender, G&L, etc. for ages but yet still have had a model or 2 on my must eventually add to the collection list as those sorts have had some that I tried in a shop that I liked between feel & sounds. But, I give you credit for making me reconsider my potential pecking order of my 'to get list' by virtue of a few insights into the tech & enthusiasm for the instruments on behalf of the in shop interviews that is one of the reasons I've a few guitar pals who have long ago migrated to G&L whereas I had remained neutral between Fender & G&L models despite one pal's explanation over a decade ago regarding why he favored G&L. But this tilted the edge to G&L further.
    And all my reluctance was despite having had several various Ibanez RG models over the years in the mix. But, I've yet to even contemplate the trade or sell of a single Gibson or Epiphone that is in my arsenal and can not envision that possibility nor comprehend it. :D
    And, G&L should offer you a payout of at least a couple of their models if nothing else, as you sold me on pushing them up on
    my to get list and above Fender for starters not to mention other considerations within that realm of guitar styles. And that is just the Electrics Only list. :)
    I rant...
    Good & cool video. B-|

    I find it funny that the little foot under the bridge is often credited to Leo Fender and G&L. This was a feature on the Peavey T-40 and T-60 bass and guitar that predated G&L by what, five years? Bonus round, the Peavey T series was also the first mass produced instruments to be made on CNC machines.
    Not to take anything away from CLF, but the bridge foot isn't his.

    • @tinyb69
      @tinyb69 6 років тому +1

      Extra Bonus Round, the neck cutout on the Peavey T series guitars and bases was designed to have a Fender neck bolt right in it's place. Even the 3 bolts will fit, and the front holes line up perfectly. Just have to drill the other 2 holes.

    • @allenswanson2423
      @allenswanson2423 3 роки тому

      Either way, I think they've got the physics backwards. For maximum sustain, you want to keep as much energy in the strings as possible, to eventually be transduced to the coils in the pickups. Anywhere there's "wiggle room" is a place where energy is going to leak from the strings. To put it simply: You want the strings anchored as firmly as possible to as much mass as possible, because the greater the mass of the anchor, the less energy the strings will transfer. If the bridge and its parts (which are much less massive than the guitar body) can move, then the strings will transfer energy to them much more readily than if the bridge and components are effectively just part of the guitar body.
      (This is a general physics principle. Roll a ping pong ball directly at another ping pong ball, and it will transfer almost all of its energy to the target. Roll a ping pong ball directly at a billiard ball, and it will transfer almost none of its energy to the target -- it'll bounce straight back at almost the same speed with which it hit the target.)
      I could be wrong, but ...

    The copied hardware must have been a later decision, because my luthier has maintained US and Tribute G&Ls and he is certain that my 2009 Tribute Legacy "Strat" has US pickups, a US 5 way switch, US pots and the US dual fulcrum bridge. Where it differs from the US version is that the scratch plate is 2 tier instead of 3, and the frets were not as well finished and polished on my Tribute, and didn't G&L branded tuning pegs. Mine needed the action and intonation adjusted (he said a mutual friend who had the guitar before me had probably tinkered with it). The foibles were fixed for £70, and the only other mod I have made is to change the bridge pup to a SD SSL6, as the G&L one imho was way too bright, even with EQ.

These guitars imho tend to weigh a little more but these are my fav models G&L made. If you can find a 83-84 Nighthawk or Skyhawk those are incredible guitars and the pickups are smoking. @DougZbikowski 6 років тому +1

      Not sure I agree with this- the current crop of Fenders are some of the highest quality instruments they've ever made. The G&L ASAT for example sounds completely different than a Telecaster- the pickups are creamier sounding and project mids more than a standard Telecaster's 'twang' sound. If I would compare them to anything, a Gibson SG or a PRS would be lose.

    Best guitar ever is a 1978 Music Man Sabre 1. I have two and they beat the other 60 guitars I own!

    If only Leo were to use 4+2 or 3+3 config with spoke wheel trussrod. That'd be a ultimate traditional.

      @@PhillipMcKnight My local music store is the sole distributor for G&L in Australia. They most definitely check the guitars out before they hit the shelves or are sold. I've lost count how many I have played including ones fresh out of their boxes and I've only ever played one dog [dodgy volume knob on an Ascari] - it was sidelined immediately and the volume knob replaced. I've never seen one with bad fretwork or poorly cut nuts.

    That isnt a staff... its a clef... right? A G clef... treble clef... the staff are the lines and spaces on sheet music...

      During the last several years of his performing career Glen Campbell’s main on stage guitar was a custom built USA G&L Comanche with a beautiful metaflake blue finish and maple neck/fretboard. However G&L did a one of custom order on this guitar for Glen-he didn’t want the 3 control knobs that come standard on the Comanche and so it was built with a volume and single tone knob. A metallic blue burst Fende Strat with maple fretboard was his prior favorite and carried with him as backup axe during his final tour. Glen was my childhood idol, my first LP album I ever owned was the Gentle on My Mind album and he was my first inspiration to learn guitar. He is the reason why I saved my lawnmowing money one summer to by an Ovation Balladeer as my first acoustic guitar-because he endorsed them and played them. I went to two of Glen’s final farewell tour- first in Branson MO and then here jn Little Rock where I live ( I was afraid he might not do another show in or near Ark before he would have to stop performing.). I grew up in Dallas area in Texas. I saw him once in a show in Dallas in 1980. He was an amazing guitarist and had a beautiful timeless voice (I could listen to him and never get tired of hearing him sing-feel same way about Buddy Holly, Elvis, and Steve Perry). On his farewell tour performances though his ability to remember song lyrics was compromised by his dementia his guitar skills did not at all seem diminished. And though he was not famous as a rock or blues guitarist, he was an amazing guitar player-I believe he could have played anything if he chose to do so. For those young enough not to know his skill or body of work-especially his session work as a studio guitarist for the “Wrecking Crew”

      Sorry didnt finish my post and hit button to post.... you should search up videos of Glen playing especially instrumental pieces from the 60s-70s. He had a long relationship with Ovation guitars (being one of first popular artists to use and endorse them) and with Fender-he started playing Teles back in 50s while a member of his uncles band in New Mexico and eventually used Strats-but heck he played a lot of different guitars including Silvertone, Danelectro, Gretsch, etc.
      I miss the Rhinestone Cowboy!!

    Did you say that the G&L Tribute models are manufactured by Cort? Well, here in Germany, the name Cort is not particularly known for quality builds, at least not when produced under that name..

    Can't imagine what electric guitars would be today if it hadn't been for Leo Fender and Les Paul. I don't know of another industry where 3 people, if you rightfully include George Fullerton, completely shaped the future of the product. Maybe the big 4 (Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) in the computer world, but so much of their "technological advances" were ideas stolen from others.

    I've never understood why is the treble claf is called a treble claf in English. In Hebrew it's called a G Key because it shows where the G note is.
    Same for the bass claf, we call it F Key because it shoes where the F note is. I guess my language is weird lol

    I like my Tribute Fallout just like I do my USA ASAT Special and Legacy. Isn't it true that you can tell a USA neck or body because they will have a darker circle (beauty mark) where the hole for mounting during painting was located?
