Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Can we just take some time to admire the Album artwork and name
It is quite nice
Ikr
fourD The artwork is beautiful
xRoyale ! The album is great too, thanks for replying to my half a year old comment!
@@apes4days254 I just wanted to one up that guy and get a compliment for commenting on a two year old comment.
I thought by the cover it was going to be a black metal album.
+Shane Mcnealy At The Seaside Eclipse
Ditto
I thought by that title it was gonna be shite.
+Shane Mcnealy It pretty much is. This is the first part to a double album by Panopticon. Sturgill Simpson is his real name. I'm surprised Irony Sarcastano didn't bring that up.
+Shane Mcnealy I had the same thing with Since I Left You
The original Nirvana "In Bloom" lyric is actually "Don't know what it means." - Sturgill added the phrase "... to love someone" which is brilliant in my opinion.
It "almost didn’t make it onto the album because he sang the incorrect lyrics to the song’s chorus. Simpson heard Cobain’s line “Don’t know what it means, when I say” as “You don’t know what it means to love someone.” He only realized the mistake when his manager pointed it out, after the completed record had been turned in to Atlantic. Fortunately, the slightly-altered “In Bloom” cover was eventually cleared after Simpson penned a hand-written note to Cobain’s estate explaining the situation. “I just wanna say, ‘Thank you’,” he said of the mishap, “and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to screw the song up.” "
+PJ Interesting. I just googled that and found the Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe. Thanks for sharing!
If this isn't considered country, idk what is. This is way more country than that pop country shit.
Yeah, it's good real country is resurfacing again. Margo Price is also amazing as well, great pedal steel action in some songs, blues in every word.
Musical Stranger thumbs up for Margot. If you dig classic country swagger with the balls to bring it into the 21st see also Joshua Hedley and Jonny Fritz
Greg Tyler I'd say it's a weird mix of alternative and country. Just because it pulls outside of it so much.
Daniel Christmas agreed. I remember reading somewhere that Sturgill said something along the lines of that whatever music he makes, it's going to come across as country because of his voice
No commentary on Breakers Roar? That's a beautiful song.
GreenGretel was waiting for him to say that too... one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Yes.
I just heard this song for the first time this morning as I watched the film Civil War. It really is beautiful.
@@badbadchachaliterally came here to hear this review because I heard the song in the movie today and thought it was amazing
Metamodern was pure genius....just like everything this man does, this coming from a metalhead!
I know I'm literally years late to this comment, but Metamodern is so good it makes me want to fucking explode. Living the Dream is the perfect country song.
Phenomenal record. Well deserved of the 8 without question.
The sailor described in sea stories is about Sturgill himself! The whole album is dedicated to his son, telling him stories and giving him advice. Which is why it’s called a Sailor’s Guide to Earth
A decent country album? Nice.
There have been plenty of great country albums in the past few years
+123rockfan suggestions?
Pageant Material - Kacey Musgraves
Like A Rose - Ashley Monroe
Southeastern - Jason Isbell
Traveler - Chris Stapleton
American Middle Class - Angaleena Presley
Swimmin' Time - Shovels and Rope
Down Fell the Doves - Amanda Shires
The Phosphorescent Blues - Punch Brothers
Gonna add to the list:
Hank Williams III- "Straight To Hell" "Lovesick Broke And Drifting" "Ghost To A Ghost"
and pretty much all of Hank "The Train" Hancock albums
123rockfan I never denied that.
Who's here because of Sound and Fury?
This album really kicked ass. I'm new to country music and I'm excited to explore it
I know this comment is old, but allow me to just give some advice. A lot of country pop/rock is often called country when it isn't. Country is very folk based, it's America's reggae essentially, taking the traditional sounds and putting blues and folk together. Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson Kris Kristofferson were the greats of country music, besides Hank. Now, here are some other newer and true country artists I hope you'll like.
Margo Price
Jimmie Swope
Michaela Anne
Jamie Lin Wilson
Tyler Childers
John Prine
@@mons3020 don't forget Merle Haggard as one of the GOATS. And the Texas school of songwriters, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clarke, Steve Earle
You think Metamodern is a paint by the numbers country album? Did you even listen to it? The last song sounds like Pink Floyd and the whole album is mixed and recorded to sound like a 70s album. But you probably listened to the first track and made your assumption.
Or an early Verve track
Thank you for speaking the truth. “It Ain’t All Flowers” went places that country music, and music in general, will rarely go. Truly a one-of-a-kind track. Turtles All The Way down took the spotlight as the “DMT country song”, but Just Let Go transitioning into It Ain’t All Flowers is like a graceful trip that takes a turn to darkness and pain when it’s time to confront your demons. Two of the most underrated deep cuts on the album.
First track was the best tbh
And now Simpson is producing a Steampunk Samurai Anime for Netflix. Crazy
Hard to get past the suggestion that Metamodern isn't refined or nuanced. Just my amateur music critic opinion, but I think they're both incredible albums.
Jeffrey Bonner After seeing his review of Golden Hour, I’m not surprised he didn’t notice the pure art exhibited in Metamodern Sounds...
"Smithers, who is this blubber putt?"
"That's Sturgill Simpson, sir...one of the resident blobs in sector 7G."
"Simpson, eh???"
Ha! My favorite is "one the seat moisteners from sector 7G"
God I'm just listening to this album for the first time and holy shit
I didn't realize it was the same guy. I haven't listened to that yet either but it's been on my "to listen" list for a while. Will absolutely listen to it ASAP.
gambasTV what did you think
@@gambasTV well.....what did you think?
@@Rkitt8 4 years later, sturgill is one of my favorite artists! and this remains my favorite of his albums. just like 3 days ago i binged his whole discography over two days, was great
@@gambasTV same! I saw Sturgill on a very old Joe Rogan and vaguely remember hearing some of his stuff from High Top. But I wasn’t at a point in my life where I could appreciate his work. The. sound and Fury came out and was blown away a country artist had an album accompanied by an Anime and duh into that album pretty hard. Over the past year I’ve gone through a really bad break-up and started listening to his more somber work and fully appreciate his genius and mastery. Sound and Fury is even more impressive in hindsight because he has such immense talent writing traditional country music and went and made a brilliant Psychedelic-Boogie-Rock album. Even better is that this guy was a railroad worker and became famous in his 30s. He has the right amount of life experience to draw from to make his sound and art authentic. I’m a huge Sturgill fan now as well.

Beyoncé gave you lemons, review Lemonade.
***** Tell that to Metacritic
+Michael Josefsen Forget Metacritic then, Lemonade itself is an amazing R&B / pop album, Beyoncé went from Halo to songs with freaking Jack White and Kendrick Lamar, songs talking about Jay Z cheating on her, songs about black power and even songs about her father.
So then I question you, did you heard the whole album or are you just criticizing her by the fact that she's a mainstream artirst and not a freaking unknown artists with limited fanbase?

+Michael Josefsen Hahaha nice, but give it a try, read all the lyrics as well. I never liked her to, I thought her last album was her carreer best and it still an avarage album, so I was going for Lemonade expecting to hate it, but then I realised that this is a hell of an album. So give it a try, go open minded for it ;D
Your assessment is pretty good but your number is way off. A Sailors Guide to Earth is definitely a 9 probably a 10.
Nope
You know it's just his opinion, right?
Looks like an awesome Prog Metal album cover
diddo, kinda the reason I even watched the video. /shrug
+Matthew Whitney You should still listen. I'm not even a country fan....but this album is amazing.
I bought the LP just because of the cover. The music was a pleasant bonus, although I listen to it on my phone mostly.
I was calling this album a progressive country album which I feel is accurate.
How does this man fail to reference Breakers Roar?
I had a teacher who looked like sturgill...he was an ass
Liked the album, 7/10
Lol
mr melon, have you heard sturgill's new album, sound and fury yet? an animated feature popped up on netflix a few days ago- it's the whole damn album set to animation! this was my first time hearing sturgill simpson, and iv'e been blown away by the experience. it felt like the first time i saw the heavy metal movie as a kid. there's also gratuitous boobies for one song. it had me cracking up. i know i love this new album (i've probably listened to it at least 10 times already), but i'm eager to hear your take on it. thank you for the quality content.
Yeah I discovered it on Netflix, I was hooked by the awesome animation style and then the music took me by surprise, I really like his songwriting.
He gave it a 5 rip
Breakers Roar is one of the best songs I've heard in a while.
10/10 Sturgill is an artist and his albums are masterpieces
Sturgill was in the Navy for a while, it adds a lot of depth to Sea Stories. We love it, my division plays the song about every day.
I'm pretty sure this album will be my new jam, because I'm just now getting into country. Thanks for letting me know about this!
These are some of the first (including Southern Family) country reviews I've seen you do and that's great! Never thought this channel'd touch on that. Did you ever hear Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, or Chris Stapleton's recent albums?
Just played breakers roar first time ever and I just cried. What a beautiful song

When Beyoncé gives you lemons...
You review her new album
I liked your review and all, and Sea Stories is my favorite song on the album right behind Welcome to Earth.
I'm just having a hard time figuring out why you think Sea Stories is a "southern" song? There's nothing related to the south at all in the song?
Hey thanks man, I wouldn't have found this without you and I really dig it. Keep up the good work!
Great review. I agree with almost all of it. I'm a lifelong country fan that has branched out from there and this album hits on so many of my musical tastes.
the artwork looks wonderful. I'm really intrigued
Fantastic review Antnee. I loved this album, glad you did too.
This album is amazing. My favourite Sturgill. I don't delve too much in country but would love to hear your input on Jason Isbell.
Thanks for your sharp insight on this album. I would be very curious of what your thoughts are of Ray Lamontagne Oroboros Album. It's one of my favorite albums. Muchas gracias
The album was wrote as one continuous track and the major label boys thought that was too difficult for the general public to understand so we got tracks; and you proved their point, well done. The best part of your review is your inability to say anything negative about it, this album will go down in history as one of the greats, the only thing we are waiting on is time. Also he is the soldier, he was in the navy, the album is a biographical story told in first person to his son- it's a master piece musically and lyrically, you should do more research so I don't have to do so much sharp shooting, I hate participating in this stimulus response comments crap
I wondered how he missed that part.
he could retire just alchemically mixing the major genres with one another for the rest of his career.. country + (anything just follow this album's format) and probably retire fat and happy
Hopefully he can keep up the quality and not get lost in the fame and pressure of it all. This last tour has had to be taxing. Amazing performer, he leads his band with a guitar like no other artist I've ever seen. If you haven't heard his interview with Joe Rogan on the JRE podcast you should definitely give it a spin- very interesting to hear about the Van Morrison/Marvin Gaye influences on this album structure
Hey I may be a bit late to the party but 3:18 the line "don't know what it means to love someone" was actually added by Sturgill and can not be found on Nirvana's rendition of In Bloom. Sturgill said he added the line by accident because when he recorded the song he sang it from memory and he had always misremembered the Nirvana song as having that line when in fact it didn't.
Thanks for finally reviewing. Since you loved Southern Family, I figured you'd dig this.
Sturgill simpson is the best country I've heard in the last ten years
Kyle Schwede Dude you ain’t lying
Good album. This and Kevin Morbys Singing Saw has been on heavy rotation lately. Cavern of anti-matter too. Why didnt you review that one?
im glad you've been starting to review more country artists
Thank you for this review. This album reignited my interest in the entire country genre.
Have you head of Old Crow Medicine Show, Anthony? I'm curious what your thoughts are on their music. It's much more "old time" country inspired than Sturgill Simpson (from what I've heard) but I still personally like a lot of their tracks for the way they pull off the "old time" sound without just rehashing the past.
He could have mentioned the cohesiveness of the narrative throughout the entire album.
Great review, great album. How about that new Dälek though?
I really really enjoy this album! it is one of my favorites of 2016. It is very crisp and dynamic.
Sturgill Simpson was a US Navy sailor, not a huge surprise with a lot of the topics. Great album none the less.
The thing with Sturgill's cover of In Bloom is that the line "He don't know what it means to love someone" was not in the original; it was a change that he had to get permission to make from the Cobain estate. Admittedly, the lyric change is so good and fits so well into the rest of the song that it feels like it was there the whole time.
Im only here cause Joe Rogan had him on a podcast.
did you listen to the album or just go straight from tje jre to this video? he's also been on Joe's twice.
straight from the podcast
I am here after seeing him on JR podcast but I have listened to his most recent album and Some older ones first before seeing this. I have been obsessed with this artist in the past week. I'm a big late 80s early 90s country fan and also old school 60s-70s music. This guy falls right in line with those two sounds, but worth modern music it's amazing
Never been a country fan but this is a top album, loved it from start to finish, really rich and varied.
Also yeah you should probably review Beyonce, it's a pretty major release.
review the new Aesop Rock album and don't fuck it up

I know I’m 8 years late to this review but Sea Stories is about himself. He was in the Navy and got dishonorably discharged due to smoking weed.
Sturgill has a very distinct sound and his music is really moving and unique.
Good review! Can you please take a listen to Royce Da' 5'9 Layers album. I would love to hear what you think about it.
Grammy nomination!!!
As someone who doesn't love pop country but really enjoys his stuff, anyone got any suggestions on similar artists?
That in bloom cover is absolutely amazing. Best nirvana cover I've heard in my opinion.
How? He mispronounced the lyrics then when he realized he did he acted like he knew he did and tried to fix it but really he didn't.
+logan marshall I don't care all that much. Kurt used to botch the fuck out of his songs on purpose all the time and it still sounded awesome. But like I said lol just my opinion.
It just doesn't make sense to say you did the cover because you wanted to honor Kurt and then change the lyrics to his song. I love the entire album I just can't stand the in bloom cover.
+logan marshall I think it makes more sense, gives it more of a unique twist so it's not just a copy yanno.
I'm gonna cop it. Thanks fantano
He actually changed the lyrics a tad for the In Bloom cover. in the original it just says "Don't know what it means when I say" the "love someone" part in Sturgills version is just him incorrectly remembering the lyrics
Great review. Really enjoy
I was so glad this won a Grammy, first time in a while I was a completely satisfied with the academy’s choice.
It's very hard to call this a country album by any set of criteria. It's more of a weird alt/soul/folk beast. Anyhow, what really strikes me - as someone outside of the US - is how country artists are immediately tarred by their genre. Once a country artist, always a country artist. What surprises me more, is that Americans outside of the south seem to treat country music as this sort of comical joke - that country artists can never really be serious, no matter how good they are as they will always be stuck in the country annex. There seems to be a real ignorance among young americans (to borrow from bowie) about how great the country greats were - Hank Willams et al - and how country music is the greatest genre America has produced in the last 100 years, in combining the centuries old strands of Blues and Folk and then combining it with Rock n Roll, Rock and Pop to create the only purely American musical art form. The musical catalogue of the south dwarfs the East, West and North. As I say, I have no connections to the South, just the view of an outsider looking in.
+gibsona01 I think part of the problem is there is a HUGE bias and stereotype regarding southerners, especially southerners with an accent. If you're from the south, people tend to make judgements about your character and intelligence based entirely on the fact that you're from the south. So those attitudes about southern people get projected onto the music produced there or the music that draws influence from southern culture.
Two years later? Why not? In my opinion, as a Midwestern American; Eastern, Western and Northern Americans tend to be turned off by country because of its strong ties to southern and midwestern life styles, which are very different from the other regions of the country. So, I think they just have a hard time relating to it. Furthermore, country has become a bit of a monolith in the last decade, so that may be the reason for the mockery you're sensing.
Nice scoring. I expected Decent to Strong 8, but still works though. This is my fave Sturgill Simps' album
@Theneedledrop Listen to breakers roar drunk and stoned and you'll cry like a baby. Something about that song just makes me want to hug someone forever.
Review "Traveller" by Chris Stapleton too
If Anthony didn't particularly love metamoden sounds of country, I bet Anthony will give Traveller a strong 6 of light 7
+123rockfan or light 7*
what's better? dark side of the moon or the wall?
Dark Side. It was their last true artistic statement. Everything after was money driven obligations including The Wall..which was trend driven.
Grammy award winning
I could not agree more on your review of Sturgill's latest album. On the other hand I could not disagree more on your comments about Metamodern Sounds, Sturgill's previous album. I think he singledhandedly elevated country or alt country to a whole new level with that album, maybe not so much musically (even though Turtles all the way down is one of the best songs of the last five or six years in my opinion) but lyrically for sure. It is deep, dark and anti-establishment. I might be wrong, but I don't think there were too many country artists before singing about their experiences with hallucinogenics (maybe Hank3, but not like that), preaching love and understanding and battling their own demons in such an honest and sometimes funny way. Metamodern should get a little more credit than being just a "vintage" sounding country album imho :)
Keep up the good work.
Cheers from Germany.
Loved this album and I'm just about as far from a country fan as you can get. This review is on spot.
Just discovered this album. Wow!
Purple Rain behind Fantano, nice.
Ayyy lmao One of the first times I listened to an album before you reviewed it! Found it while sifting through new releases. I agree on the rating. Don't typically like/listen to country and really enjoyed this one. Not the typical radio shlock modern country has become.
Still no vinyl update with RSD ?
Dont hate on brace for impact that’s the song I want to play when I enter a bar
Wait who one the vinyl thing?
This album blew me away. Tight track list with no filler B.S. Wow 10/10
Love Sturgil! Just can't get into his newest album. He's still one of my favorite artists for sure!
Sturgil fans should give Scott Biram a listen. Dirty Old One Man Band is a killer album.
Im parched; 'Lemonade' would be nice right now.
Dude !!! Jst thanks for recommending this ❤❤❤
He is the protagonist in sea stories. He was in the navy.
Sturgthony Simptano
i totally agree with anthony here. i'm a native born and raised Texan but i hate country music. but i love this album. sturgill hits all the emotional points of what country should be, but never compromises his integrity just to pander to specific types of country music fans. its a fuckin great album and definitely required listening for fans of folk music and alt-country.
beautiful albumcover.
nothing - tired of tomorrow
I've really been enjoying this album!
Great album.
Great review.
Great artist too.

Is it really a contradiction to say both live a little and keep it between the lines? From my perspective in my specific life I find balance is key and you can definitely toe that line. You can live without becoming addicted to drugs or be a vandal like he warns his son not to in Keep it Between the Lines
His In Bloom cover is so addictive
