We know the Beast as a tormented monster. Angry, bitter and alone he protected his castle and imprisoned all who came before him, but he wasn’t always this way. Through many iterations the Beast transitioned from being an ugly, misunderstood patrician to a hot tempered, unstable, primitive Beast unlike any other.

In my opinion I felt like 1991 Beauty and the Beast was more Beasts story than Belle, because he's the one who actually changes instead of Belle. I love this video

Honestly I think he started off as a monster but deep down he was really a handsome young man who grew up not loving anyone but himself and loving luxury since his father was a cruel man. Also as what Belle read in the 91 version he was a prince in disguise. The only way Belle knew that the Beast was really a man was his blue eyes.
Great video, as always. My favourite Disney version of the character is the 1991 version. To be fair, I feel like he was the one that got the most character development and growth while Belle was a static character.
Also, I think the beast in the fairytale and the Disney movies are very different. The original seemed to be a victim of circumstance with the fae cursing him because he didn't want to be in a romantic relationship with someone who he saw a mother (also, there is the super creep factor that an old woman wanted to be in a romantic relationship with a teenager...) while the Disney version was more of an act of karma because he did cast the fae out.

The version I do like is the 1991 Disney Version of the Beauty and The Beat
Hi Wotso, how are you? Thank you for yet another amazing video. I think because he was so strange looking, he was so very misunderstood and because of that he sometimes has a bad temper. I always knew he was nicer and calmer, but it's no surprise he sometimes got upset and angry. My fave version is the Disney version as well. Hope you are having a magical day as well.

In my opinion, I like BOTH the fairy tale version and Disney’s version of the Beast. But I do see why many prefer the Disney version of him. He had MORE character development than his fairytale counterpart, and was more tormented, explosive and impatient, while in the fairy tale, he was more gentle, polite and lenient.
The Beast also learns to love another person more than himself, and became a better self. It also demonstrates that anyone has the ability to change (but of course, it depends on the person). But overall, the Beast is more dymanic and more believable as a character, and we can both understand his actions and sympathize with him at the same time.

My favorite version of beauty in the beast is from 1992 when I owned it on VHS when I was six years old it’s still my FAVORITE MOVIE of all time ,and also the live action one 2017 even though I am 33 years old.
I don't think the beast is a monster, I think he's an amazing person.
Right; he's an amazing person for imprisoning Belle's father in the dungeon and starving Belle if she doesn't come and eat with him for dinner. 😓
he was not a good person and nothing justifies his attitudes, and he takes his anger out on those around him, but little by little he is reviewing his actions and becoming a better person, he is evolving and this makes belle approach him gradually developing a friendship

Gaston is essentially a "Nice Guy".

I'm glad you talked a bit about Once Upon a Time. But my favorite version is the 2017 version. I think what's lacking in the 1991 version is a sense of intelligence which would make him a worthy partner for Belle. 1991 Beast just has this library and there's a scene showing he has to be taught to read! Whereas in the remake, you see Belle and Beast bond over literature, presenting a deeper contrast between him and all the villagers who think Belle is "odd," because she loves to read, especially Garson, who is has almost no interest in literature.
Courtney Tonokawa good point, but I think they might have added the fact that he needs to be taught to show his innocence and humanity unlike the remake where as he is already showing human like qualities such as standing on his feet
Many people at that time where unable to read, thats why Belle is seen as odd. Not a lot of people in the village can probably read and with Belle being a woman and reading they find it even odder. It's likely the beast was never taught to read, he was transformed into a beast when he was around 10-11 years old and during the time he is a beast i doubt that his main priority is learning to read.
Ametrine He was most likely not 10-11, if you look at the stained glass illustrations at the beginning, the fact he has a painting of himself that looks a lot like how he looks when he transforms back, and the fact that in the flashback shown in Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas depicts him as a lot older than 10. This is a plot hole that the new version worked to rectify, with all the residents of the castle not aging despite the passage of time. And it wouldn't be the first time that this has happened in a fairy tale. In the original Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, she slept for a hundred years, yet she did not age over that period of time. It seems common for curses in fairy tales to pause time for specific people, something that Once Upon a Time did in Season 1 with their first Dark Curse.
Ametrine, he probably would know how to read because he was a prince, and royalty were usually taught to read and write, often multiple languages.
I also enjoyed the fact that once the Beast had been transformed back into a prince, there was a little throwaway line when they were dancing where Belle says "how would you feel about growing a beard"? To me, that shows that she didn't love him just because he was a prince. She fell in love with him in that form too. And I enjoyed in the 2017 version that they bonded over literature and found a common connection in that both of them were "odd". Belle and the Beast are one of my favorite Disney couples because it wasn't love at first sight for them. (my other favorite is Aladdin and Princess Jasmine for the same reason) She became his prisoner to save her father and their friendship was only born once he stopped snarling at her and started treating her with kindness and respect. When she finally confesses her love for him in both the 1991 and 2017 movies, it feels sincere because they have allowed their love to grow over time.
Between these two Beast's, I have to pick the '91 version. At first, he was violent, temperamental, and animalistic. He's also a hybrid between a lion, a bison, a gorilla, a boar, a bear, and a wolf. Though the eyes remain human. I like the new '17 design of the Beast, though he's so erect and lion-like with antelope-horns. The problem with this design is he's not beastly enough. So I'm going with the '91 version because it beats the more human-like '17 Beast. And '17 Beast's face.....why people, why?

I always really loved the 1940's French version, as you said, it stuck to some of the story points of the original novel. Plus, for its time, it had very neat effects

The 2017 version certainly gave him more insight into how he was before the night he was transformed into a monster. A kind hearted child who slowly became much like his father, tainted with hatred, arrogance and other toxic traits. Despite the efforts of the castle servants, they were unable to save the young prince and sadly became cursed alongside him on the night he was rude to the mysterious enchantress who would place a curse upon him to reflect how he was inside on the outside.
now im interested, what about the history and other versions of Gaston? Does he go past the the 1991 version?

It's not really "all versions" that he's taught a lesson by being turned into a Beast. The original 1740 novel the fairy who was raising him (on behalf of his mother) tried to seduce him once reached adulthood. She cursed him just for turning down her advances.

Whenever you do another 'Beauty and the Beast' theory; how about doing one on if the servants (when cursed) merged with the pre-existing objects found in the castle or if not what may of happened to the old objects when they were replaced with the cursed servants? That or the theory that Jane from 'Tarzan' is possibly a descendant of Belle.

In the original the beast was a reptile with an elephants trunk and furry claws. His mother was a warrior queen who went to war when her crown was threatened. She left him in the care of an evil fairy when he was a baby. Growing up he thought of the fairy as his mother and even called her as such. When he came of age (about 13 i think) the fairy realized how good looking he was and asked for his hand in marriage many times, all ending in rejection. She eventually got so annoyed that she turned him into the beast. A good fairy came up with the plan about being protective of the rose, his bargain with Maurice and acting like a dumb primal Beast like creature to earn Belles love which was, on the evil fairies terms, the only way to break the curse.

I know what a Chimera (kimera pronunciation) is and love that type of mythical creature but have never heard of a shimera. Is it similar?
The original story her name is Belle,"Belle" is French for "beauty"...the story being French in origin.
So the reason why the Beast was so cruel was because he had an abusive father? That makes a lot of sense. That's original.

And don't judge by the book of it's cover. It's the context of the book it's important. It means is of what Belle said in Once Upon a Time. And his and her personality is like from within their hearts. And don't get Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas movie. It also reveals Beast's past with other characters.
