This video and the links are super helpful! Working on this in my 99 GSX. I used similar foam tape but didn’t think about the thicker wrap for the larger areas! To HD I go!! Thanks for the DIY!!!
I just did this and even got an NB core from a junkyard. I just wish I knew I needed the whole housing because the NB core does not fit in a NA6 housing. So I ended up spending a lot more time grinding away plastic so it would fit...
In your video I see a spring on the passenger side of the HVAC box. My 1993 NA does not have this spring, but does have the mounting points for it. Was this spring added in later years, or was mine just missing from the factory?
Great stuff! I ripped apart my dash to clean the AC (smells like mold/mildew), so this video is just what I needed. Thank you!!! My foam disintegrated like yours (gross!!!). BTW, did you tackle the AC box at all? I would like to clean that, too, but I fear I need to take it to the shop to deal with the refrigerant. I was hoping there was a way to clean it without having to disconnect the cooling lines.
It is possible to do without disconnecting the lines but it's messy. You can get the enclosure off the bottom and spray it out with some thick plastic under it and a shop vac going to suck up the water or cleaner as you spray it on.
My whole system was taken out by the old owners of my NA, now I’m stuck trying to figure out what I’m missing and this is something that is definitely gone
@@OGPedXing This isn't true. NB heater cores are often 0.25" wider and will crush if you try to shove them into an NA airbox. I had to order an O'Reilly part for the NA and it slid right in.
@@nopers2223322 I used the entire assembly from an NB, the plastic vents and all. That's what I mean bolts in no problem to the na miata mounting points. That said, I know people who've been able to get an NB core into an NA assembly. I think they did have to remove the foam around the core and also dremel out some areas.
@@OGPedXing Ive done an NB heater core into NA I had to use a chisel two remove two plastic ribs inside the assembly. and also had to cut the feed and return tubes, and use a bit of rubber hose and clamps to attach the two again, like the NA uses, we did that because we couldn't get the V band style connection the NB heater core uses, to seal with the tubes sticking out the firewall holes.
Yes, it will be fine but you'll need to loop the heater core lines and put a plug or grommet in the holes in the firewall. I did this when my heater core was leaking and I didn't have time immediately to fix it. I just connected the output line from the back of the head to the input hose to the hardline that goes under the exhaust manifold with a barb connector.
@@OGPedXing okay I’ve done some more research and I think I got it down. So the coolant goes through a tube into the heater core and goes out through another tube which gives you heat, so if you don’t need heat you can remove the HVAC unit along with the heater core and then loop the tubes so the coolant flows as normal just skipping the heater core since your removed it, allowing the car to run perfectly fine since the heater core and HVAC unit are not essential for the car to run and drive??????
Yes, that can work. The only things to watch out for is it's somewhat harder to bleed the air out after a coolant change. Also some people have the opinion that the heater core is a required part of the Miata cooling system because of how cylinder 4 normally does not get as much flow due to the weird design of the inlet and outlet both at the front of the engine. I think it would be mostly fine for normal driving but a coolant reroute may be a good idea as well.
Hey just recently subbed to the channel, I love the content and great videos. Quick question, one of your videos you were installing a ms3x firmware in for your mega squirt. I have a MSPNP2 installed in my car and I wasn’t sure if I can still install the firmware on it or not? Really would appreciate a response, recently just got into tuning and just bought tunerstudio today, I would really love your help.
Instead of the ms3 firmware, you'll want to get the latest ms2 firmware from here: www.msextra.com/downloads/ and scroll down to the ms2 section. I think it's 3.4.3. check what you already have installed through, chances are it's already on there.
Nope, so far so good with the adhesive backing it came with. I did prep the surface as best I could with some rubbing alcohol and some brake cleaner for good measure.
Changing the foam won't fix that issue. But here are some things to check: The likely cause of fumes in the engine compartment is an exhaust leak near or at the exhaust manifold. You can check for leaks by feel by removing the heat shields and very carefully without touching anything hot, feeling for the leak which will seem like a hot breeze on your hand. This is the easiest way. A safer way is to take a shop vac or similar and set up the hose to blow air into the exhaust. Then, with the engine off, you should be able to hear and feel leaks. A common issue is the manifold gasket, or a rusted out downpipe with a small hole or crack. The second thing you can check are the grommets in the firewall around the heater core pipes. These can degrade enough to cause an opening from the engine compartment. But this would cause the cabin to smell regardless of whether the blower is on. Either way, the blower brings in air from the area below the windshield on the passenger side. Fixing the exhaust leak will clear up the problem.
That came on an NB HVAC assembly and was a surprise for me as well since my original NA assembly didn't have one. If you don't have it, it's not a problem, just ignore it.
Yeah it can be bonded on there really well. I worked at it with a tool called a hose plier which allows you to twist it rather than pull. Those thing are worth their weight in gold, I use them all the time. Other than that you can try getting some lubricant in there like WD-40..not the best for the rubber but you can always wipe it off when the hose is off. Here are the pliers I mean: www.harborfreight.com/3-piece-long-reach-hose-grip-pliers-37909.html
Wow, great timing. I was playing with this literally this afternoon. Previously it would blow pretty hot, like +10/15 degrees above ambient for the first minute or more after turning on the AC, assuming the engine had been running. Now it's blowing at about ambient +1 or 2 immediately. So pretty happy with that.
Check out the guide to pull your dash -- in a Miata it's quite simple: ua-cam.com/video/VSJw28NsY4c/v-deo.html
a trick: watch movies on Flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Xavier Graysen Yup, I've been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)
I almost never do other people's DIYs, but this was super helpful. Links for foam still solid here in 2022, and worked perfectly!
I just pulled my dash and the foam was crumbling while looking at it. Thanks a lot for this video!
I’m restoring a one-owner NA that I bought yesterday, and this is very helpful!
amazing! just did this and it feels so much better having that gross foam dust out. thank you 🎉
Now this one is better. Congrats man, I watched the hole video... You were very direct to the point but informative at the same time

Great video, thanks! I gotta get this done, maybe I'll wait till next summer though. Also nice miata ;)

Did you do anything with the blower motor section too?

My 1.8 1995 HVAC box doesn’t haven’t it either so I wouldn’t worry

Why do all explainers have background music?
Good video! Thank you
what year heater core did you use? also awesome vid thanks for all the info you've given us. It's helped me build my V6 Miata
I ended up using a core from a 99 NB. The whole assembly bolts into an NA (90-97) no problem. The NB cores are aluminum rather copper.

Yeah I hate those vband connectors, so fiddly with pipes this size. Exhaust sure, coolant pipe, no 😂
Thank you
If I don’t want heat or ac can I remove the white main hvac unit and the black ac box next it or would my car not run after that?
