  • This place is huge.... and largely unexplored. It has an intact train depot and rail staging throughout the base to take the trains into the bunkers to deliver or load weapons into many of the extensive "magazines" in the hillside. As we havent explored it and want to see this more on the map we are gifting this to the Urbex world to see what you can come up with.
Dont be fooled though even though this place looks dead it has quite a capable security presence which we encountered 20 years ago when the base, unused, as it is today managed to rumble up 20 or so security to search for me when I tried to get in for a look. 20 years on, nothing has changed and for some strange reason dispite being "on the market" and "looking for people to use the site" the site remains DISUSED but in 100% immaculate condition. Do you smell a rat here....
That too many security guards for a closed base... hmmmm.... lets bust this bullshit wide open and find out what gives.
Happy Xmas Urbexers... and be safe.

I went there in the late 70's hauling missiles and torpedoes all the way from RAF Honington in Suffolk to be stored. No driving hours regulations in those days for the military. used to stay in a lovely B&B in the village. Thank you for posting.

Brilliant piece of film, I was born in Church road, Llanychaer, 1951 in what were MOD flats, i was 3 when my Father who worked at Trecwn was transferred to RNAD Lodge Hill , in Kent .( shut in 1960) we then went to Gosport, RNAD Priddy's Hard, where my father worked till his retirement in 1983.
I have been back many times over the years to Fishguard as we had many friends in the area but obviously never into Trecwn itself, nice to see some shots of where my father would have worked.
Some of my friends worked in Trecwn right up to its closure. I will have to have a chat with them about it.

Wow! Trip down memory lane for me. I lived at 25 Hill Road, Trecwn, from April 1961, until February 1966, when I left home at 18 years of age, when I moved to London. I worked in RNAD Trecwn from Easter 1964 until February 1966. I knew a John Venables at Fishguard Secondary School, from 1960 to 1964. I've just been watching a Drone Video of the RNAD Trecwn Valley, although most of the underground Magazines are no longer visible, due to all the trees which have grown up over the years. I notice that Hill Road no longer exists and many of the houses on Barham Road are gone, although the SASO's house is still there. I still remember most of the names of the people I went to school with, many of whom also went to work in the Depot at RNAD Trecwn. Be nice to know how many of them still live in the area. Most of us who lived at Trecwn, were English and children of men who worked in the Depot. Some left Trecwn before 1966, when their fathers were Posted elsewhere; one of the penalties of being Civil Servants.

I worked there. I left in 92 to go to other bases but always thought that it was the most beautiful place anyone could work at. I still have relatives in the area so look in on what's happened to the old stomping ground. It's not really a secret, it was bought out by a company who span a load of waffle about developing the site and creating 400 jobs. After purchase the number dropped to 200 then again down to 40. They did nothing for years until a court order made them sell it to another group with promises of development. Still nothing has happened. There were opportunities of renting out buildings and workshops but I believe that there were issues with that also. The train tracks are the property of the rail companies and keep up with the maintenance, the internal narrow gauge rail has all but been removed and given to other historic sites to use.
The "Bunkers" are not bunkers at all but storage areas called magazines. During the WWII items were stored in them from places like Parliament and Buckenham palace. The base was an armaments depot, it put together bombs, mines and shells used by the RN, which were then stored in the magazines. The magazines have a design the if there was an accidental detonation of considerable force it would destroy the supporting pillars (hidden within the walls) that would collapse part of the roof to quench any fire and prevent a chain reaction of the other armaments. At full capacity each one of the 58 Magazines were capable of storing 250,000 Tons of explosives. (Big bada boom). But the safety precautions were very tight that to be honest it would probably take a deliberate act to set anything off.
There were other magazines not used for explosives (6 additional ones) which were much smaller and were decommissioned and sealed/destroyed due to instability in the rock bed and structurally unsound many, many years before its closure. The main magazines are roughly 200m long and 30-50m wide. with some of them having the rail tracks on one side and the raised storage area on the other so that forklifts could move the cargo from the trains easily.
I would suggest that if you wanted to look around to talk to whom ever owns it now and ask for a tour. if a reasonable size group goes and posts things about it on line they might consider it free advertising and be happy to let you in. An invite is so much better than trespassing.
I just wish they would do something with the place and help the local economy out, create jobs, just something, Random thought, it would make one hell of a golf course, with loads of space for a luxury hotel/Spa.

I know someone who tried to operate out of there but the owners imposed such bullshit contracts they pulled out. In otherwords we pretend like we want your buiness but infact we dont. See Corsham for a classic example of this thinking. It seems like as if its another one of those "closed but could be reopened quickly if needed" loads of bullshit the govt does to hide its secret standby bases.

I have just watched this again and it suddenly occurred to me that there are also many hidden paths/roads/ tracks behind the tree's that would have led to the other magazines. I hadn't noticed them before. There was also a scandal some years back when all the tracks were removed from the magazine area's as they were made of a special bronze alloy, spark proof and lessened the chance of static sparks igniting any of the explosives, someone made a small fortune....

The last time there was an hourly drive up and down but mainly I'm guessing because of demolition work, and diggers etc etc, making way for a Bioplant that never materialized. We got in to tunnel No11 but they are all sadly bricked up now.

disused nuclear bunker at Templeton airfield is good to see in west wales
this may help to find other bunkers -
Supply trains would run from the site to both Fishguard harbour, Neyland
for Milford Haven, and Pembroke Dock. At Fishguard the line extended
beyond the ferry terminal at Fishguard Harbour railway station, continuing along the breakwater to a single line spur, allowing for transfer of munitions to Royal Navy ships.
and ther is a bunker in west wales in Pembroke Dock on the rode - connacht way and the bunker looks over the water and you can see on google maps as well
