I met Fred at Nottingham Theatre Royal just before he passed. I remember an outstretched hand with a firm grip and a Guinness on side. He signed my flyer and said ‘there you go lad, go and get that made up at the chemist.’
I liked Fred because he reminded me of my own uncle who sadly died just before Fred. A man who reminds me to celebrate my passions and made a real contribution to the world. Thanks, Fred you were a real mate to us all.

I always thought he died in 2009, but apparently he didn't. I do wonder how he was able to do those 3 BBC TV series (shown after his death) before he died considering he would've been in serious declining health. He looked older than 66 to me even during his last TV shows which was made sometime before he died I would assume.

      the truth from The Independent.
JOHNSON TO PISS IN YOUR CORNFLAKES AND TELL YOU IT'S RAINING
The government has given polluters the green light to dump raw sewage into rivers and the sea as Brexit disrupts normal water treatment.
Brexit has disrupted imports of water treatment chemicals
Some businesses have found it more difficult to get hold of water treatment chemicals because of supply chain disruption at ports blamed primarily on Britain's departure from the EU.
The Environment Agency this week said companies struggling to get hold of the treatment chemicals would be allowed to "discharge effluent without meeting the conditions" of their permits, which normally require water to be treated.
Rolling shortages have hit different parts of the UK economy since the government took the country out of EU's customs union and single market - imposing new border bureaucracy on importers and exporters.
The ending of free movement and the creation of new red tape on doing business with Britain's largest trading partner has also exacerbated a shortage of lorry drivers, with the logistical nightmare compounded by the department of transport mismanagement.
Water treatment is the latest sector to be hit, following concerns last week about a blood tube shortage hitting the NHS and reports of intermittent shortages in supermarkets across the country.
In a statement released on Monday, the Environment Agency said: "Normally, you need a permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 to discharge treated effluent from a waste water treatment works (WwTW) to surface water or groundwater. Permits contain conditions that control the quality of the effluent you can discharge and in who's river you can dump the shit.
"You may not be able to comply with your permit if you cannot get the chemicals you use to treat the effluent you discharge because of the UK’s new relationship with the EU, other unavoidable supply chain failures, for example the failure of a treatment chemical supplier.
"If you follow the conditions in this regulatory position statement (RPS) you can discharge effluent without meeting the conditions in your permit, but only in working class areas. You must get written agreement from your Environment Agency water company account manager before you use this RPS."
Companies should "resume use of chemicals to treat effluent as soon as is practicable", the agency said. The regulatory relaxation will last until at least the end of next year, with an extension possible.
All three grades of waste water, low risk, medium and high risk will be allowed to be dumped into rivers and seas and into the working class food chain.
Amelia Womack, deputy leader of the Greens told The Independent: "Our rivers are already appallingly polluted almost as much as our parliament: water companies discharged raw sewage into UK rivers no fewer than 400,000 times last year, all in working class areas where the smell is less noticeable.
"The public were rightly horrified by this failure of the Environment Agency to take action and clean up our waterways”
“This is a failure of their understanding on how our country’s most basic infrastructure works and using our environment as a dumping ground rather than addressing the root causes of the problem.
"To prevent further Brexit chaos and undermining of environmental protections, the government must work to mend supply chains and work to cooperate rather than trying to look 'tough'."
A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, who is paid to lie for the government, said the change was “strictly time-limited and there are robust conditions in place to mitigate risks to the environment”.
The spokesperson said that the “most sensitive and high-risk watercourses will not be affected and any company planning to make use of this short-term measure must first agree its use with the understaffed Environment Agency, and select rivers near to working class council estates.

Never to humble nor pretends to be what others would want or how they perceive the world should be.

Where I grew up in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) our small city on the border of Mozambique had a railway shunting yard and workshops, I did spend quite a lot of time there, I got to know some of the engine drivers who knew my Dad, it was amazing being able to go up and down the lines in a living breathing machine, I can still remember the sounds the heat and the smell of the steam engines that did the shunting of the freight cars or shunting around the passenger carriages getting them ready for the main line train. The device that turns the carriages or freight cars around called the turn table was a lot of fun too.
It was always great watching Fred Dibnah with his strong passion for all steam and anything mechanical, which brings back loads of very fond memories, Thanks Fred Rest In Peace.

its was horrible how vandals and possibly people who steal scrap metal broke into Fred's back garden and stole stuff from his steam powered workshop not to mention his steam roller Betsy that Fred spent 14 years restoring to working order and the traction engine that he had just finished restoring

Genius. Upsets me how we live now. Whyse were king of steam. For what we gave it away and his passion was worth nothing.england stomped him his views and ideas. Only true northern man I had as a hero. But his views our views were stolen from us . No enthusiasm about it now unless you have millions . Sad how shite turned out

I see they mentioned the Ryhope pumping station near Sunderland. I wonder if they have fixed their wrought iron Victorian fence? I knocked a considerable length of it down years ago while driving my Lotus Cortina from Sunderland to Durham one winter night. on the dead straight road, I hit black ice, invisible at night, going about 90 mph! That total loss of tyre-grip spun me around instantly and the car went backwards at considerable velocity up the embankment and tore out about 30 yards of the fence. The rear of the car was bent of course but it still ran so I left in haste!

Excellent documentary and full of admiration for Fred, but you don't need misrepresentation to justify this awesome engineering. Dismissing electric motors by doubting their ability to last more than ten years ignores the fact there are a great many working motors already orders of magnitude older than that.
We can and should celebrate great engineering, old and new. With any luck, in another 150 years there'll be someone like Fred celebrating today's technology.

Does anyone else think that Fred Dibnah only died as late as 2008/2009?. I always assumed he died around that year, but as it turned out he actually died a few years earlier in 2004. No idea why I thought this, but my guess is because they had been showing all the Fred Dibnah BBC TV series after his death and I just assumed he was still alive. So when exactly where all those TV series made, as surely he would've been too ill to do anything like that prior to his death? and why were they only shown after he had died and not before?. There were about 4 separate series shown which had never been shown before, and it seems like a huge amount of work for someone who was in declining health, or where those series basically just stuff he had done in his earlier series, re-edited and made into separate shows?.

I adored Fred. Not impressed at the Merry Widow being on here. She may say the nice things as it pays well. She tours, doing talks and writes books about him. He wrote her out of his will in the last weeks of his life as she kept gadding off whilst he was so ill and his steam buddies would visit to find him lonely, in bed and hungry. She had already cut off lots of his friends but the ones who defied her and still visited got slated by her to Fred. She called them his cronies. She said THEY were turning Fred against her because when she came back from trotting off, Fred would be upset at being left alone (and rightly so) but she says his 'cronies got at him' . After Fred died, leaving her nowt she decided to contest the will. Just 3 days after he died, she was told to leave the house but she still owned a house in Blackpool so wasn't homeless but claimed for 'reasonable provision'. Sickeningly she sat back and allowed his kids to sell the steam roller to pay her off! Any decent person would have known its importance. Fred owned it from being a young man, still living with his mother. Anyone who contests a will is disgusting in my book. Fred had every good reason to cut her out. By that time he was in the hospice so wasn't reliant on her for help and food. The Widows mother even said it wasn't surprising he cut her out of his will!! His five children deserved everything, not that dolly bird wrinkly floozy with her Rapunzel hair (how inappropriate is that hideous hair on a woman of her advancing years?) the first two wives were good and kind to Fred but number three was just a gold digger. She even expected her own son should have some of Fred's money ffs. Said he saw Fred as a father figure, pah! Stepsons don't cut the mustard when one has their own sons and daughters; Fred only married her because he didn't like being alone. He thought she was quite a 'glamour puss' and she was quite full on with the message she left in his visitor book after stalking him out and visiting his garden saying she was 'obsessed with spanners'. Weird woman didn't like anything oily that would dirty her manicure or hair. She even stopped him having beer and he had to have wine instead, and vegetarian food ffs! I just wish he had lived long enough to have seen what she was like when he was so ill, if he'd recovered long enough to divorce her so she wasn't waltzing around the country STILL making her money from being Lady Muck, the Merry Widow with her pathetic anecdotes. She should tell the truth about what she put Fred through or just shut up. Best time he had was his last trip with Alf and the lads cos he was away from her. I just hope one day the lads can buy the steam roller back and I hope karma catches up with Sheila Grundy! RIP FRED ❤️
