Episode 2: Backstreet Mecnanic
Fred always described himself as a 'back street mechanic' and the workshop in his garden where he did his 'mechanicing' was a one-off. It was all assembled from scrap and the cast offs from old mills and factories but it was probably the finest working example of a steam powered engineering workshop in the country. Fred takes us on a tour of the garden, shows us how everything works and demonstrates some of the jobs he can do in it.

Peter Thoday Interview from 2002 Part 2

This interview is taken fron the DVD of the Victorian Kitchen Garden and was shot in 2002. I am led to believe that Harry Dodson died some four years later in 2006. I remember the series from 1987 very well, I was always late for school because it was on in the afternoon. I have managed to get the whole series and will try and put it up. I will start with January and each month is in three part...

Peel to Glen Maye Waterfall
Переглядів 1,3 тис.16 років тому
This was a trip from Peel on the Isle of Man, to the waterfall site at Glen Maye. We were using the trip as atest for the camera I bought before going to the island. Details are at the end. The reason I have put music to it, is because the sound quality from the camera wasnt that great. Thanks for watching.

I love Fred and I love steam. But those British and Continental European whistles just make my skin crawl. Give me a UP 4-8-8-4 sounding whistle and I’ll be a happy man 😊

07:45 The disrespect of the modern woman for the achievements of men really has no boundaries. Imagine the audacity to call your husband and his friends „loud little boys who are playing with their toys“ when they’re in fact constructing a highly sophisticated steam power plant from raw steel with self-built machinery in a way what made the Industrial Revolution and all the commodities for her possible in the first place. And on top of that even pays very well for her lazy life. And these creatures are even allowed to vote.

Fact is the age of steam ended close to the day Fred was born which was in 1938. Germany was turning to diesel already by then. Holding onto the past too long is the reason UK became a 3rd world country for heaven's sake so goodbye Fred, you really were a man for the 19th century, you dope.

Fred & I would have got on very well-came out of a similar mould over the Pennines in Leeds in January 1938. Now 85 I have added wood turning to my many interests. My first model steam engine and boiler took me a year to build to exacting standards, a medical career did not leave me too much time for my diverse interests & skills. Lovely man, Fred, sadly he left this mortal coil far too early. R.I.P Legend.
