    I appreciate you, sis. My city (and even suburban) dwelling loved ones always say, "Well, everybody doesn't have an acre of land, Wapani." My son continually proved them wrong. He lived in a small studio apartment in downtown St. Louis. That man grew strawberries, all types of herbs, tomatoes, and some more inside of his apartment. He even got permission from the landlord to grow outside as well and would share with the neighbors. It just showed me where there's a will, there's a way. I replaced ALL ornamental flowers with either produce (fruits & veggies) or herbs. My household had to go back to the indigenous ways of healing our own body outside of Western medicine.

    I live in suburban MN and honest... it stays blazing hot till mid October. Then it gets wicked cold. I grow stuff as hobby, but I like these videos for when things change for me and I move a rural town where temps are more reasonable. Retirement soon, I pray.

    Had friends long ago that would harvest their potatoes and then pile them up on a bed of straw at the end of the garden near the house. Probably around 30 bushel. They would then cover them in straw so that they were surrounded by about 12 inches of straw. They would then cover the mound with garden soil about 16 inches all over.
    Later after the potatoes they had on hand were gone they would dig into the mound and get what they needed through the winter and spring, covering them back up each time.

      @Kevin Tao Do not dry them in the sun, they will turn green and become unedible. When you get them out of the dirt. Don't wash them, just get the surface dirt off and let the skins dry in a dark cool place as well. i use my pantry shelves for the drying process. Once the skin toughens then you can use this method for storing them. I had to do the video outside that is why I was in the sun. Once you harvest potatoes get them out of the sun as soon as possible. i hope this was helpful to you?😄

    • @countrylivininthecity2246
      @countrylivininthecity2246  2 роки тому

      @Kevin Tao You will know the potatoes are completely dry when you place the potato in the palm of your hand and you know longer feel moisture on the surface of the potato and the skin toughens as it dries.

    • @countrylivininthecity2246
      @countrylivininthecity2246  2 роки тому

      @Kevin Tao depending on the size of the potato, the bigger they are the longer it takes. Between 5-10 days. I had some big ones once and they took about 2 weeks

    Great idea! Thanks! - I noticed the hay is timothy hay, I found out I'm allergic to timothy hay and apparently lots of folk are, too. I get a rash, really fast. :)
    Also - be careful of letting too much sun on the taters - they'll turn green and that's also not good - solanine can do a number on your tummy!
    I'm going to use this idea next time! shalom!

      True, you can also store them inside your home too. There are also portable root cellars for sale but they cost too much. The key is to store them in a dark dry place and keep the temperature no higer than 65 degrees.

    A good idea, I'm going to use the box and straw, but I love in AZ, and I have no basement or cool garage. Hmmmm, I'll figure it out, but if you have any ideas, let me know! Thanks!

    • @countrylivininthecity2246
      @countrylivininthecity2246  2 роки тому +1

      You can store inside your home. I have some stored in my kitchen on a shelf in my pantry. The idea is to keep them in a dark dry place, and keeping them from getting too warm. If your garage gets to hot bring them inside so they don't start spouting again.

    I'm wonderring if mice or squirrels try to get in there. The squirrels dig in my beds in general if I don't use habanero pepper sprinkle mix on them. I suspect mouse get in my garage in winter. I'm in Detroit, MI.

    • @countrylivininthecity2246
      @countrylivininthecity2246  2 роки тому

      I had to get my garage sealed because mice were trying to get inside. but before that happened, I used cayenne pepper around the the boarders or I would soak so old rags with turpentine to deter them from coming in. The turpentine works the best if you can stand the smell yourself. I use poles with turpentine cloths to deter birds as well duting the summer. They hate the smell. Thanks for your support😀

    best to use straw, plus I have not been in WalMart for over 5 years, will never got to China Walmart. I done this last year, not the best way, they got wrinkle had to throw many of them out. So no I would not advise this method.

    • @countrylivininthecity2246
      @countrylivininthecity2246  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment but that has never happened to me because i make sure they are in a dark, dry place at the right temperatures. Straw is just as effective or ever paper. The wrinkling of your potatoes doesn't come from hay it comes from not having them at the right temperature for storage. The same thing will happen what ever you store them in, if the temperature is not right
