Honestly folks, there is a serious shortage of seed potatoes 🥔 prices are going through the roof. I would save every last potato you have for next year’s growing season…. The availability of seed potatoes is going to be critical…!
That is so true. We harvested ours late. Zone 7 . And cured them and put them all into storage in the installed garage. All tubers are wrapped in a layer of newspaper. Goal is to plant all 120lbs
@@JamesTKirk-yz5ng Good thinking Mr. Kirk! I’m in zone 7a west Tennessee, Stewart county, I planted a second and third crop of potatoes. They are just now starting to flower.! I’m using a modified Ruth Stout method. I’m very optimistic that I’ll be able to extend my growing season potentially into December.. I’m constructing a 12 x 40 cold frame around my potatoes 🥔 I believe just being able to grow egg sized seed potatoes for next year will be a win-win! I will eat nothing plant everything!
@@markmeyer9571 well done. People have no idea how bad it will get in 2023. Almost all my growing space will be root crops and storage squash. And as many perrenial herbs and plants I can find.

I would love to see how your potatoes grown in the greenhouse do next year. I have two tote bags with carrots that have potatoes growing in them from this year. Hoping they will grow into nice potatoes.
Well they did okay until we got down to 20F. I may try them in the spring when I heat the greenhouse
Awesome information on growing potatoes. 🥔 I mostly grow sweet potatoes but, next year I would to grow a much larger variety of potatoes. 🍠

Thanks for sharing about your potatoes. I usually buy my seed potatoes locally, but may order next year from wood prairie.
I buy locally as well, but Wood Prairie has varieties I can't get locally. Plus, they are certified organic, which is a plus.

When do I plant potatoes and also, is it okay to use grow bags? I’m in Zone 6b and 7A.
Yes you can use grow bags. I have a video on that. Potatoes should be planted after the soil temperature warms to at least 50F

We grow the purple Hawaiian potatoes in our garden (Western Washington State). Our crop is always small (about 2 5-gal buckets) and we make them last, or try to, through the holidays at least. We would love them to last longer but no matter what we try they begin sprouting within 4-6 weeks of harvest. I’ve tried just about everything except puting them in the refrigerator.
Would you have any suggestions on how to store them through the winter?
From what I understand, some potatoes have shorter dormancy than others (as you see in the video). Aside from that, potatoes need cool (if I'm recalling correctly, temps in the 50s, maybe 40s?, I think) and humid conditions, plus airflow. That's why a root cellar is ideal, but without that, it's hard to get the perfect storage conditions for longer storage life.

Most likely January-February to give them time to greensprout before planting.
I can't find your video on using tote bags for crops/gardening. Can you please tell me how to find it, I tried looking thru your videos and did a search. Thank you.
Must have been someone else. I used grow bags but not tote bags.
Once grew potatoes, they did well but it was then I realized it's the THICK SKINS I love about them most and mine were thin skinned kind. Most enjoy a baked potato with most of the flesh removed, just the heavy skin with layer of flesh. (realizing that's calorie wasteful)
Have you tried letting the potatoes hang out in the garden for a couple of weeks after they are ready to dig? It toughens the skins up more than they are when harvested immediately at maturity.
@@thebeginnersgarden Ahhh....thanks for the tip. But I think russet or "Idaho" types would be the ticket? Many types simply have thin skin if not mistaken.
My kenebecs were harvested in mid July and barely lasted 3 months before sprouting. The only place I can keep them is in the basement in bins directly on the cooler concrete floor and in the dark. Basement temps always in mid-low 60's. Sure wish I could prolong their time but short of building a root cellar with lower temps, this is it. Do you think more air flow, like with a fan blowing constantly, would improve the time?
I'm not sure. What I've read is that they do like cool (your basement is cooler than my room), and they like high humidity. The high humidity is also what I'm missing.
You might try leaving them in the ground longer. Maybe late August.
How cool is your pantry here? I don't have a root cellar either and need to see if there's anywhere in my house I can successfully store potatoes. I keep my house around 65 in winter.
Mine is definitely closer to 70-75
Where ever you decide to store your potatoes be aware that if they turn green they are toxic. Still good for a seed potatoes but not good to eat anymore
i eat them anyways lol
