When I lived in Southern Oregon I volunteered to clear trail in Wilderness areas and we used a saw very similar to what you show here. I went in to the endeavor being very ignorant to crosscut saws and I was quickly educated. Great care was taken to keep that saw in good shape. We would peel the bark off of any tree before we cut it and we would never finish the cut with the crosscut saw if it was close to the ground. We went to great lengths to recognize and then eliminate any sort of bind that could effect the set in the teeth. The ranger had a special holder for the saw, made out of some kind of plastic and only he would carry the saw. The first time I helped cut a downed tree with the crosscut saw I was shocked at how well it worked. That saw, because it was kept in such good condition and was so sharp, cut through wood like you could not believe.
Cody I’m 47 and grew up and still live in the mtns of NC. My grandpa was a farmer and I grew up learning so many things that a lot of people didn’t have the opportunity too. That being said I’m still learning these things from your channel. This was a great video on this saw. I had no idea they were tapered like that! P.s. I just cleaned my stove glass using the tip from the last video and it worked amazingly.

I had no idea that a crosscut saw had such interesting geometry. That's fascinating. I'm surprised no company has started producing new ones. I think there's enough bushcraft / off grid homestead types that would buy one just to keep around for emergencies, or just to hang on their wall in their man cave.
Don't know much about those saws. But have always loved them and thought they were very cool! That is a find for sure. And a treasure to keep, preserve, even use, and pass on to another generation! This has shed light on a Simonds saw I received as a gift. And new light on my grandfather’s saw. His saw is rusted. I have not wanted to clean it. - until now!
I'd respectfully disagree that in this situation utilizing metric made for simplicity. Simpler to just write out 0.1mm than 0.0039" would be. Or 2.7mm vs 0.1063", etc.... while still allowing plenty of precision to show the grind profile measurements. Meanwhile somewhere a machinist is grinding their teeth that I'm referring to 4 decimal measurements when nobody in the video had a set of micrometer's out 🤣🤣🤣

I really appreciate the details regarding this fine instrument, and appreciate the fact that you understand them and value them highly. I use a cross cut log saw as an example of what a man is like who is living out his purpose from God. He is purpose made, and when sharpened and cared for just right, seeing him living out that purpose is pure joy. Just like watching a fine old saw being cared for, and then used. Pure joy!

Some of the best steel out there. I use broken saws or ones that are completely worn of for making knives. I also have a good collection of saws still in decent shape that need to be restored.
Cool I found a one man Dunlap 4950 42" saw at an antique store that may have been used once but was missing the top handle! Got it for $30 you cant get a new foreign made saw for that!
I appreciate your analysis of hatchets, tool etc., but this video and information is invaluable. I have a saw with a single wood handle near the middle of the top of the blade, I will be looking at it closer to see the taper. It has been wall art, but soon I would like to use it. There's lots of machineary/milling tools that don't have working examples today. The knowledge of maintenance and production only happens if people keep it going. That's why you get things called a lost art.
A long time ago there was a video on your channel in which you cut down a few with a saw that's joined by a very clever mechanism in the middle of the blade. Was this video deleted? I can't find it anymore.

I have 4 old saws like these that belonged to my great grandparents. They lived in S Tx. Not sure what they were used for down here but I’d love if someone could tell me more info about them.
@ well that 5ft saw is almost as tall as he is. He looks to be around 5’10”. Even if it’s only the blade that’s 5ft those handles probably don’t hand out more than 4” on either side making the saw 5’8”.
I would literally watch this guy do anything and that bugs me. Why? Because I’m in marketing and I can’t figure out why this is. He’s got something I can’t figure out 😂👍🏻
I just checked in my garage I had one left over from my Dad’s house I think it was grandpa’s it’s about 6 foot long but the handles have long slotsThat the blade slides into they’re two different type of handles one with a large wing Bolt on one with the screw down in the handle To tighten the blade in the slot about 6 foot tall with the top of the blade being flat .😊Does anybody know the manufacture ? Wood handles look very worn maybe have been replaced looks like they were replaced at some point. The teeth look different that’s on the video. Also would it be OK to wire brush with a grinder the handle of metal parts. To take off the surface rust!
My Grandfather was a logger in 1920s pnw I have a couple of his saw I love them you talk about the saws and the pashin you have for them. I don't be come a logger like him but a carpenter in No Cal the next best thing LOL keep up with the saw video ❤ happy new year to you and the family God bless

It's only a misery whip if poorly filed. A properly filed crosscut saw will sing.
My grandpa who ran a stave mill into his 70’s wouldn’t use any bandsaw blades or carbide teeth that weren’t Simmons.

We have lots of these old saws in france in old barns , dates on the blades are 1800 s but the handles turn to dust if they still have them

Really cool. My family has lots of this stuff up in Oklahoma. I'm gonna start taking a better look at it and see if anything is of interest.
I found one in the backcountry last year, i cant tell much but its in decent condition, but it was burned in a fire and warped
