  • In addition to the Faith & Reason lecture on Lewis' classic "The Abolition of Man," Dr. Ward graciously delivered a lecture on his highly acclaimed book, "Planet Narnia," which argues that the interpretive key to the Narnia books is the seven planets of medieval cosmology. Once you hear his argument, you will never read The Chronicles of Narnia the same way again.
    About Dr. Michael Ward
Dr. Ward studied English at Oxford, theology at Cambridge, and has a doctorate in Divinity from St. Andrews. A member of the faculty of Theology and Religion at Oxford, he is also professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University. He is the author of the best-selling and award-winning "Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis" (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of "The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis" (Cambridge University Press). On the 50th anniversary of Lewis’ death, Dr. Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, London.
Dr. Ward works occasionally in film and television. He presented the BBC documentary "The Narnia Code," played the part of Vicar in the C.S. Lewis biopic "The Most Reluctant Convert," and handed a pair of x-ray spectacles to Agent 007 in the James Bond movie "The World Is Not Enough." These lectures were recorded on the campus of Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, VA.

I haven't read PLANET NARNIA yet, but I've just reread THE SILVER CHAIR (for at least the 5th time) but with the Dr. Ward's insight that Lewis is using Luna as a background for the book. It certainly fits. I recently read SURPRISED BY JOY and noticed that the flat lands/marsh lands in THE SILVER CHAIR were similar to the flat land Lewis described seeing as a boy on his way to that hellish boarding school. Also, during his time in this awful place he said the worst nights were during a full moon because there were no covers on the windows, and it was hard to sleep. I suspect his experience at that school gave him insight the effects of horrible experiences on a child's mind, even into adulthood and helped him create the underworld images.

Which of the planets would be sagacious, wise, scholarly ?

      Mercury? Or Jupiter, perhaps?

      Probably Sol
Some of that, if it relates to language, would fall under Mercury tho.

    First!
Could’ve said something profound, but I thought this would be funnier ;)

In all seriousness, I really enjoyed the insights. It’s inspired me to go back and read the books to search for the imagery (and to read them in the correct order)
