    That's why I love these RFVC engines. Japanese knew what they were doing when they made these for sure.

    Nice job. Your going to get addicted to this whole bike restoration thing. Looking forward to more videos. I restored a 93 Xr650 back in 2019. Same mileage as yours. Stripped the bike completely down and back up. Sand blast and paint. I had to get a new head and a good used rear shock. Not too bad overall. Looks like yours got the full Xr'sonly treatment.

      Thank you, definitely learning a lot. So far I’m really enjoying the process! Your build sounds awesome! I’m hoping to fully strip this bike down and make it pretty eventually!

    Great project! Sounds like you might already be aware of the weak stock front sprocket on the XR650L. Search for Lemmy's article on RevZilla called "Winter project on a Big Red Pig" for a permanent fix.
    I know it's a failure point because I rode a '94 XL from NJ to Panama and (mostly) back in 2001. A sprocket failure nearly left me stranded in Mexico on the return leg and ultimately ended the trip prematurely in Nebraska. It's worth fixing!

      Thanks for the info JT! I’m working through a solution right now. In the third video of this series you can see the damage on the splines. My solution for now is trying out a KK Bikes Super Pinion front sprocket. We’ll see what happens!

    Got a 94 I've been working on. Currently just waiting on a part to finish putting the motor back together after swapping 2nd, 5th gear and countershaft. If you haven't already I would pull that front sprocket and check, shaft is likely toast.

    • @Preacher402

      I agree! Looking forward to getting deeper into this project. So far everything has cleaned up great. I have a break down of all the upgrades from the original owner. I’ll try to include it in a future video.

    Pu the kicker back on it. Clean the carb and change the oil. Spin the motor with your thumb 👍 on the spark plug hole if it is good it will pop your thumb off the hole. If parts are good don't change parts if not needed. You can't kill it unless you run it out of oil.

    • @Preacher402

      We’ll see what happens! Thanks Frank

    bought that model new in 94. only issue i found was the output shaft where front sprocket mounts, is softer than the sprocket itself so if that wears out as mine did full engine teardown and HOPEFULLY still available.

    • @Preacher402
      @Preacher402  4 місяці тому +1

      Looks to be an issue on this bike too. I cover the problem in other episodes. Hoping the KK Bikes sprocket is a solution until I’m ready to split the cases 👍

    this will help me with mine I bought two bikes one is xl600lm and xr65ol the XR is in bad shape and it requires lots of work but I got a running engine and good frame but no electrical components like wiring harness and battery box and no handlebars controllers and no throttle or clutch cables so I might start working on it first but the xl600lm is working great just small upgrades, please provide as much info as you can.
