I think I read somewhere about Campbell or a team mate hitting a trap speed in one of the Baja races of 112 MPH on the XR650r... I believe they also finished about 2 hours ahead of the trophy trucks that year. Still impressed by the that accomplishment fellas, great job!
“Baja 1000” posted by behind the bars here on UA-cam actually shows this moment. It was actually a B team rider for Honda. He left the track and went flat out on the beach. Worth a watch. 🤘
Wow, The BermCannon with Johnny Campbell! So Cool. I LOVE my 650R's. Currently getting my 03 650R (only 1200 mi on it) ready for the rest of my Riding Days (I'm 70). Scotts sub mount, BRP Triple Clamp, Pro Taper Bars, Cycra Hand Guards, Squadron Head Light, Suspension, etc, etc. Been riding my 02 650R for 16 yrs now and prolly have over 70K miles on it. Favorite Bike of All Time. The "DOMINATOR"! Ride on BC!!!
In 2006 my buddy at my local Honda dealership told me they where discontinue the 650r! have had many CR's and XR's to that point but never brand new one.Got my new 2006 650R a week later and added a Baja Designs street kit before it left dealership.31000+ miles later i can easily say my best bike purchase ever.
I was riding a 2001 XR 650R up a hill on what I thought was a trail, when I reached the top it was a sheer drop off about 15-20ft. I quickly bailed & watched the bike bounce off a few rocks & stuck itself into the sandy wash at the bottom. It took me about 10 mins to reach the bike, I found it laying on it's left side, buried into sand all the way to the cross bar clutch lever & all. Still idling. Picked it up & kept riding. It didn't miss a beat.
Johnny 11x... Kelly 11x... I started with surfing before moto... heroes are heroes. Nice to view interviews through multiple lenses. Congrats man! You've gleaned insight from the greatest behind the bars.
Hey Mark, that conversation with JC was great...wish there was more!. I'm proud to own a 2001 XR650R!. And the great thing is that the XR's we own aren't much different to the bikes raced in the Baja ....Cheers, Steve
I remember leaving Mikes Sky Rancho heading West to the ocean and Johnny was by himself doing a prerun of the coarse. We waved at each other, very cool. No one else on the tails for those 2 days, Ensenada to mikes and back.
Awesome interview Mark! I used to go to all the baja races just to see Johnny race! Didn't even care about all the trophy trucks, it was all about Johnny on the dominator!🤘
The combination of a rider like Johnny and a bike like the BRP is unbeatable! I rode one over the Assu plateau in Kazakhstan and while I'm no Johnny I was impressed by the ability of this machine. I had a tuned 650L but the R version was noticeably more peppy. And it has a kickstart!
Great interview . Listened to the rest of it on your website . You mentioned flame out on the Xr650r . A suggestion - first year xr400 Cdi box . I have 1 on my 650r. Works good . I used a genuine Honda part . Direct swap no wiring . Supposed to advance the ignition timing a little . I have not checked it with a light . My bike does not flame out .
I’ve got an 02 that I went nuts on rebuilding before I ever started it. Here’s what I did, HRC 11.5:1 piston, Carrillo rod, Edelbrock pumper carb, stage 2 HotCam, 400 ecm., header, Akropovic can. Ricky 200 w. Stator, Baja designs Baja headlight. Now you want to talk about a fast powerful ride, I tell you what…….. this thing is off the charts. Can’t wait to move down south with it.
Thanks Mark 👍 Johnny Campbell is a legend 🙌🙌🙌👍 he was riding a XR600R like it was a 250 back in the day 👏👏👏👏 and then XR650R with Johnny riding it flat out in the desert wow 🤩 awesome 👏👏👏
GLORY DAYS...MID 80’s thru MID 90’s my heyday in D-37 SMITH, LR, ASHCRAFT, KRAUSE, HUNNICUT, HAMMEL, CRANDALL, CLIFF THOMAS...OA on a 250 @ B2V, HALLGATH...125 GURU. THOSE RACERS WERE SCARY FAST ! Mando
Honda, the manufacturer that always has the capacity to produce some of the best motorcycles in the world but chooses not to, my thoughts exactly when they decided to discontinue the xr650r 🤦 at that time I think a factory supported KTM 660 would of been an interesting choice had KTM went to Baja with one of those
I wonder why Honda stopped making the XR650, it was a really great all-around bike and those motors were so durable and the handling was surprising really good
They get hot, trying to get power out of a big air-cooled 4 stroke just means one thing, lots of heat, even my xr250r gets hot when you cane it, if this bike was winning races it was not because of the bike.
Just listened to the rest of the interview on your podcast, great interview! Then I watched Johnny’s movie on Amazon prime. What a great story. Thanks for bringing it to us.
Honda made a mistake abandoning the 650R at exactly the time they should have been adding electric start and releasing a street legal DS version. Only two years later KTM took over the big dualsport market with the 690 Enduro.
Not to take anything away from the Honda victories but they all occurred after Kawasaki pulled out of desert racing having won the Baja overall for like a decade straight. Not sure why you would even mention Danny Hamel since he was killed in 95 and NEVER even saw an XR650R let alone raced alongside one. Honda didn't race the 650R until 99 and it would be a good bet for Kawasaki to win in 97 and 98 if they had stayed. To my knowledge no factory XR650R ever raced against a factory KX500 in the desert but if they had I don't think I'd bet on the XRs to win 7 straight. 😉

I have an 02 with the Baja Designs kit also. Down to 3 bikes now , crf450r , KTM530exc 6days package. The 650r would be the last to go.
Can it be a highway bike
I bought 2001 honda XR650R and i love it!

Met Johnny with my dad JN Roberts a few times, he was great. Funny thing is, I was stoked to meet him, but he was stoked to meet my Dad.

Exactly Steve. Johnny made Us all a believer that the bike is more than capable of doing lots of things

The crf450x was Hondas prized product to take over the xr650r

Right on Davey
Why weren't the cr500s competitive against the KX500s
Bought a 2000 in Feb 2000. Still own it.

@@Droptineful Thankyou very much for that, I'll look it up 👍
Cool vid . those giant lights are crazy pre led 4shur.
Question. Although it was dicontinued too early, do you consider it as reliable as the L version?
Yes
Good to see ya again Johnny, hope you never take your hands off the bars ever again after taking the checkered flag. That was a hell of a crash.
