The long, grueling awards season was supposedly leading to a historic moment for first-time Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone - until it didn't.
The "Killers of the Flower Moon" actress was the first Native American person nominated in the competitive lead actress category. During awards season, cinephiles and critics alike predicted that Gladstone would take home the gold statute. Especially since she had already won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her performance; all that was left for the actress to take was the esteemed Oscar. Even the night felt like it was primed for Gladstone as the Osage Nation performed their film's nominated song "Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)" at the awards ceremony.
But alas, in a close competition, Emma Stone snagged the prize for her performance in "Poor Things." The loss felt shocking and demoralizing even though there was always a chance for Stone to snag the award. But it felt all the more heightened as we glance at history.

I worry Lily Gladstone becomes the next Yalitza Aparicio who struggles to get any substantial acting work despite being Oscar nominated. Lily was AMAZING in KOTFM, definitely the best thing about the movie. I understand why Emma won, she was that entire movie while Lily appears in less than an hour of the three hour runtime. She just had more momentum in the end. But that is also a testament to how good Lily was that her performance transcended her screen time. She deserves to have an amazing career following this and more nominations and wins in the future. I feel like people forget how difficult it is for POC in Hollywood, the amount of POC who get nominations and still struggle is shocking.

Look, I have no shade towards Emma Stone, she is a great actress and she always gives just an absolute beast of the performance. But it’s about the message it would send. Not only is Lily Gladstone the first Native American to recieve an Oscar nomination, but the story she told with her performance is something everyone should watch. The Osage people’s story is such a vile and cruel period of American History. Having such a big Oscar moment surrounding that film will inspire people to watch it and learn the history around the film, read the book it’s based off of, and research some of the other atrocities that America did the the Native Americans. It’s just a missed opportunity.

That said, NOT winning the Oscar was the best thing that could've happened for Gladstone's career. Would you really want to have a major Hollywood breakthrough AND watch your career hit its peak all in the same year?? No!!! Lily is now in the perfect position to be in, because now we're all waiting to see her GET THAT OSCAR. And now, every director wants to be the one that helps her GET IT. as a Chinese Gen Z I don't usually care about politics, but the Killers of the Flower Moon really made me see something I've never seen in any other Hollywood movie, even the most non-politically people will be reminded that the Oscars are not just about acting, politics is always a big part of it. the Killers of the Flower Moon got a lot of nominations but didn't win a single one, which is telling in itself...
Martin Scorsese has touched the Hollywood boundaries here: Jews will always the victim; you can be anti-colonial and anti-war, but you can never show the underlying logic of these problems. It may be that my perspective as a non-American is too obvious, but when you compare all the stories about the wild west (the Killers of the Flower Moon wasn't even a colonial story, the westward movement was long over by then), you get a sense of how special this film is...

I like more subdued performances, so the acting in poor things was a bit too much for me, but it matched the tone they were going for, and that's alright.

Because as we've seen with so many Black, Hispanic and Asian actors who get nominated and or win Oscars, they're usually never nominated again due to the fact that the industry doesn't seem to know what to do with them post Oscar and good roles simply aren't there for them afterwards

Fact is, white people can’t write authentic and great minority roles because they aren’t one and they don’t understand that perspective.

Octavia Spencer has been nominated at least two times.. Blacks have also won many other Oscars pertaining to costumes, music and script writing..
Its always up the the actor/actress to go out and find projects that suit their skill level. No actor/actress sits by the phone hoping someone will offer them a gig.. The real question is can Lily fill movie theater seats or get us to stream her films? If she can do this, she will be bankable.

You can believe that Emma's performance was great and still be critical of the fact that Emma will have opportunity heaped upon opportunity to win more Academy awards, while Lily won't. There is a reason that Lily had to fight tooth and nail for every moment she had on screen. It's not an accident that only two woc have ever won. Whoever you think deserved this, and that's a very subjective topic, you cannot argue that the balance of opportunities to win is heavily skewed in Emma's favor.

Oscars is a mix of bribery and nepotism which is standard Hollywood. Then throw in some minimal audience appeasement then some woke, then some Hollywood looking after its own. But its mainly money. Money needed to get the film in front of the judges, money to bribe and the huge boost to feature earnings for everyone involved with winning an Oscar. I read somewhere for actors its an additional %20 for the rest of their career.
I was surprised woke didn't win, the film was good, the acting was good. But I expect its because Emma Stone is one of their own where as Lily is not in the club (yet). Also they don't see a future career for her as she is not typical so "what is the point".

I loved Poor Things in Emma Stone in it, the reason why I wanted Lily Gladstone to win was not only because it would have been awesome for the first Indigenous American to win the award but because she was paired with two a-listers in De Niro and DiCaprio and yet anytime she was on screen, she radiated and I wanted to look at her. I don't agree with the idea that she would have done better in supporting actress because I really believe she is a lead in KOTFM. I feel the exact same as you about Lily Gladstone. it's so nice to see a different form of femininity with her, where she's showing you don't have to have a high pitched voice, be bubbly and chirpy, or be white and blonde to be a woman in Hollywood. I really hope we get to see more of her and as you say, not just in "sad stoic indigenous woman" roles. obviously her heritage is important to who she is, but it's not the only thing. I think there's still a lot of intrinsic bias against women who don't perform femininity in certain ways, especially in movie roles. you can see it online with all the fanboys who are very concerned about female characters being "too stoic" or "unlikable" or "wooden", as if they ever judged men for the same things.

  • @Kevin-rg3yc
    @Kevin-rg3yc 3 місяці тому +37

As quiet as it is kept, lily Gladstone (if we’re going by Oscar politics) had alot more things working against her for 4 reasons:
1- she was pushed in a leading category for a performance that was borderline supporting, she’s 1 hour of screen time in a 3 hour film, I know there are expectations to short runtime performances winning leading but its just not only the screen time there’s also the presence and the overall importance of the character to the film, both in terms of screen time and how the screenplay depicted lily’s character, she was more supporting than lead, it’s always better for a performance that is co-lead to successfully campaigns and win in supporting,
2- killers of the flowers moon lost a lot of stem after the October 2023 release the only thing keeping it relevant was the campaign for lily but a film must have a great studio campaigning to it and still have some relevancy after it’s release to be fresh on Oscar voters mind, poor things was released in December and became a box office sleeper hit that grossed $100 million WW by the time oscar was about to premiere.
3- the narrative campaign for lily randomly shifted after her golden globe win it initally was the familiar narrative of ingenue actress who spent years building a strong resume and critical notices making her star studded mainstream breakthrough, then after her golden globe win the narrative shifted to lily winning the Oscar so she can make history by becoming the first indigenous actress to win the best actress Oscar, it’s not good to make the narrative of a POC actor who can potentially make history with their Oscar wins be the driving point to their narratives seeing in the cases of Denzel Washington, Michelle yeoh, halle berry and Ariana DeBose it’s better to make it part of the narrative bc otherwise it can cross into borderline tokenism.
4- there was a unconventional timing for the sag awards, the sag usually take place weeks or a whole month before final Oscar voting processes begin/ends and this help when the SAG is the last televised precours award before final Oscar voting so whoever won the Sag usually have the advantage of having the recent buzz and hype fresh on Oscar voters since the same Oscar voters are also SAG voters, unfortunately due to the SAG strike, the sag awards was delayed to 2/24, 3 days before the final Oscar voting ended aka 2/27, Emma already won back to back from the critic voice and BAFTA, which for consideration the televised BAFTA awards took place 4 days before final Oscar voting began so Emma had more momentum among final Oscar voting time.

    • @minavamp2811
      @minavamp2811 3 місяці тому +8

i totally agree with your on reason #4. lily gladstone and michelle yeoh were in a similar situation. what hurts lily is that final oscar voting began 3 day before she won sag. so after she won sag, oscar voters only have another 3 days to vote, so probably many voters already voted for emma for the first 3 days of oscar voting, knowing that emma won bafta 4 days prior to final Oscar voting began. where as in the case of michelle, final oscar voting did not begin until 4 days after michelle won sag. so that means oscar voters have a full 6 days to vote and knowing that michelle won sag going into voting. i think that makes a difference between michelle winning oscar and lily losing oscar. had lily have the same time line as michelle, she might have won. also other factors boost michelle case is that she is in the best picture winner movie that sweeps everything to the point where it helps jamie lee Curtis to win as well, where as lily's film was not an oscar front runner, which has no enthusiasm in any other categories but lily's leading actress catergory.

There were also four other actresses in her category who gave GREAT and OSCAR WORTHY performances. In past years any one of them would've been the solid frontrunner. Part of the reason Gladstone lost is ironically the Academy’s own efforts to create a more diverse international voting pool. Poor Things has more appeal than KOTFM w international voters which helped push Emma Stone to victory. (to be clear, I'm not saying they like Cody Smith-McPhee because he was white; I'm saying what Cody Smith-McPhee does in that movie is similar to Lily Gladstone's performance; I would even say Lily Gladstone does more than Cody; no hate to him, btw, I liked both his and Lily's performances when I was watching, they were both great)

If Gladstone had like 10% more screen time and more emphasis on her character’s internal life she would have won.
It’s v obvious that they didn’t expect her character to be the Oscars vehicle and she really shined considering the amount she was given to work with
I can’t wait to see what she does next ❤

That Emma Stone movie was incredibly stupid and boring. Lily Gladstone should have won that one! O well, the academy has a weird standard on who wins awards to begin with. That committee will continue to shit on Tongva lands and exploit the real winners! 🤣🙄

lily gladstone currently costars in a show on hulu called under the bridge, based on a book and true story, and she’s sooo good. _and queer in the story!_ & you’re right, queen of strong subtlety!! she just has to make a facial expression for you to be fully engaged, it only builds with her speaking and so on. not unlike someone like elisabeth moss who kills in that department, just to make a comparison of the _type_ of impact, for someone who hasn’t seen lily’s work yet. but lily is still completely unique and has her own great sense of humor tied into her talent for drama. i see her going much further and am so thrilled she didn’t quit acting!!!!
*i did love poor things and think emma was uniquely right for that role. but lily’s time will come!!! i mean, it has! but the oscar time i mean. emma was completely shocked i remember seeing that she was not expecting her name whatsoever; i think she was rooting for lily

What do you think about Frances Mcdorman's performances in Nomadland? That's a pretty subtle type of acting I think. I was quite surprised she won as I did not think the academy voters would gravitate towards that type of performance.

Thank you for this video. I completely agree with you. Lily's performance was IMO the best of the year. Too many other YT video bloggers are writing this off as a better performance by Emma Stone and I disagree with that perspective.

If I'm being honest, I feel like the reason she didn't win was because think about it: LEAD ACTRESS.
When you hear the word "lead", you think main character. Except in Flower Moon, Molly's not the protagonist, Ernest is. He's the focus of the story, and not Mollie all that much. Now while Gladstone clearly gave her all in every scene, I think that's why people said she deserved it. Although, I feel like the movie would have been 10 times better if that acting she gave was when SHE was the focus of the story. Show from her side why she would trust someone like Ernest to the point of being his wife, why she couldn't have figured it out sooner what his involvement in her family's deaths was, or even the fact that it wasn't insulin he was injecting her with.
Maybe there could have been a way to show both her and Ernest's points-of-view, but with this in mind, it makes what could've been much more of brilliant movie have that potential lost.

Full disclosure, I do not give two cents about "muh representation." If everyone who wins an award is white, I don't care so long as it's actually merited through the quality of their work. Likewise, if all of the awards went to people whow aren't white and if they did the best work thst year, I do not care. Good for them. Quality and the recognition thereof are what matter most, and it's just statistical probability that the majority of people who get awards will probably be members of the racial majority because that's just the general demographic makeup of the population and how probabilities work without anything to unfairly skew outcomes. I also don't blame people for accusing others of "just wanting the Native American woman to win because she's a Native American woman." Whether or not that's actually true in any given case is irrelevant to the fact that a lot of people on social media in particular have absolutely set that tone over the last decade. It's not unreasonable to make that assunption because a lot of ignorant people do actually think this way (not that individuals should be painted with the same broad brush, mind you, I'm just saying I get why people do it).
With all of that said up front, Lilly Gladstone absolutely deserved that win imo. I don't think racial politics went into the decision in this case, but I completely agree that it's because she didn't give the kind of overstated (sometimes bordering on the medlodramatic) performance that the Academy usually laps up. I think Stone got the award for best female actor for similar reasons why DiCaprio won best male actor for The Revenant. They both went to some rather extreme (albeit very different) lengths for their roles. In the case of Emma Stone, I honestly think it is just because some of her scenes were sexually graphic. Regardless of the quality of her performance, I think they ultimately chose her because she was willing fo "go there." (I'm also of the opinion that the concept of her character being in those situations seems a little sus, and I don't know how to feel about it). There's just no appreciation for a subtle performance these days. I didn't know any of that information about Gladstone, but I'm really happy for her. She more than deserved the recognition. Her performance is just all the more impressive considering the background that got her to this point. Emma Stone is just a great actor who turned in another quality performance. Even ignoring the banal racial politics people can read into the situation, it just seems like Gladstone's accomplishment is more impressive because it took more to acheive this level of recognition. Idk if that makes total sense, but that's my take on it.

I still can't believe how snubbed killers of the flowers moon was, i really thought that they where going to give it best movie, note, it wasn't my favorite movie of the year or favorite oscar nom (for me it was anatomy of a fall) but I really though that it was going to be killers of the flower moon for best movie because I did think it was the best movie this year

I made one Oscar prediction to my friend: Killers wasn't going to win anything. I made it because he had two previous movies, Gangs of New York and The Irishman, get ten nominations with no wins, and I thought they both deserved something (Gangs for Cinematography and Production Design for certain). And beyond that, as the essayist says, AMPAS doesn't like to actually give Scorsese much after nominating him. Taxi Driver got nothing, Goodfellas got only one (equal to the number Barbie got this year), Age of Innocence got one, Raging Bull got two (both deserving wins, but it didn't get Picture or Director), and plenty of other deserving films, like King of Comedy, got no consideration for anything.

For me, as someone who has seen both films, what cemented Gladstone for me was the scene where we see her *SPOILER* break down. In the same way Toni Collette and Florence Pugh’s cries in Asters films left a sour taste in my mouth, there is something very real and raw in Gladstone’s screams. It is quite haunting. Also her final scene with DiCaprio you can see how broken Burkhart is, without any explicit dialogue pointing to that conclusion.
I love Emma Stone in Poor Things, and in fact I prefer Poor Things as a film, but Gladstone does so much with so little time, that it feels like she is in the film much more than she is.

Nobody is ever "robbed" at the Oscars. It is always a subjective vote that doesn't necessarily correlate with performance. Beyond that ... how is performance even measured? Let's be honest: best actor and best actress awards usually go to the most impressive roles ... meaning the combination of acting, direction, writing, and cinematography. All awards for artistic expression are absurd at some level. There is no way to really measure art. We have these awards because they are fun. Beyond that ... nothing much to take away.

Both Stone and Gladstone were inredible, but I was also affected by Sandra Huller's performance. Although nominated for Anatomy of a Fall, she was also extraordinary in Zone of Interest. She also carries the film in three languages -- English, French and German -- and plays her character with such brilliant complexity and ambiguity.
