The Amoeba Sisters videos demystify science with humor and relevance. The videos center on Pinky's certification and experience in teaching biology at the high school level. For more information about The Amoeba Sisters, visit: www.amoebasiste...
    REFERENCES:
We cover the basics in biology concepts at the secondary level. If you are looking to discover more about biology and go into depth beyond these basics, our recommended reference is the FREE, peer reviewed, open source OpenStax biology textbook: openstax.org/d...
    Further Reading
As our pinned comment mentions, we cover basics with the goal of inspiring curiosity for more! There are so many important details to explore. For example, the conversion of lactose to allolactose, the cAMP-CAP conversion that stimulates the RNA polymerase, or the names of the different genes and their individual functions. We also don't mention that there are other factors that can affect the activation of this operon (such as glucose levels). UPDATE: 1. Isn't it fascinating that, as mentioned, ALL of your DNA is found in your body cells, but genes can be turned "on" or "off?" We just want to to note: there are a few body cells that do not have *any* DNA though. Mature red blood cells or cornified epidermal cells for example. Always some fascinating exceptions in biology. 2. If you're studying the lac operon, we want to remind you that our video looks at basic concepts with the goal of inspiring to explore more. For example, we don't talk about the conversion of lactose to allolactose, the cAMP-CAP conversion that stimulates the RNA polymerase, or the names of the different genes and their individual functions. We also don't mention that there are other factors that can affect the activation of this operon (such as glucose levels). Check out the further reading details to explore more! Also, did you know we have a gene regulation GIF? Find it and more of our science GIFs here www.amoebasisters.com/gifs

"Why do we even need to learn this strand if we're never going to use it!" This has to be the greatest biology/teacher joke of all time. Also, "You are here. You must be here to synthesize HCL" is a hilarious, immediately familiar way to describe the concept. As a 26 year old "adult" college student, I mostly watch these for super dorky biology humor that motivates me to get back into the dry stuff. Thank you!!

  • @VirDormit

So Rna polymerase needs promotor to start transcribing but operator blocks it way when operator is attached with repressor protein .
    Lac operon
When lactose is more it binds to repressor protein and removes it from operator thus making the path free for rna polymerase which then synthesises lactase which in turn break lactose
    And bacteria eat lactose happily
If lactose is not there it doesnt bind to repressor thus the repressor is on operator and blocks rna polymerase
In other words , lactose is suicidal 😂

This video explained a very confusing concept in a simple way . I really appreciate the efforts that were put in to carefully build up the concept .

Hello, Amoeba Sisters. I just want to thank you for this great educational content. I am a graduated theoretical physics student from Germany and I was told to perform a so called genetic toggle switch experiment in the lab. Since my biology wisdom was very poor I could perform the experiment and take conclusions about the physical quantities in the experiment BUT I was not able to understand *why* this phenomena was happening! (I had 2 populations of E.Coli which are red light or green light fluorescent). Thanks to your videos I started to find out about the "different players" acting in the bacteria!!! This was the first video I watched and now its also the last because after watching it for the first time I started to get so interested in all this topics that I ended watching them all. Thank you very much! In Germany we have a saying which fits wonderfully to my situation that says "You saved my butt."... because next week I have an oral exam with a biology professor at my university and he might ask me about this... also now I am so curious about all this stuff that I cant understand why nobody told me about all this before!!! Who hided all this information from me!?!?! hahahaha THANKS

Wow, keep doing what you do. Every other youtube video I searched on this was so difficult to understand because it was so technical. This animation, though, was extremely helpful and made it so simple to understand. THANK YOU!
