    An asteroid is headed straight toward Earth. Initially, scientists thought it would miss us, but they've made some serious miscalculations. And now, it's headed right toward our giant blue marble. What happens next? Does this mean the end of humanity? Can we change the trajectory of the asteroid?
    And why might this actually happen by the year 2029?

    • @jacob4920
      @jacob4920 4 місяці тому

      A glancing blow would be far more effective than a direct hit. A direct hit would most likely do nothing, surprisingly enough. Like shooting a bibi-gun at a freight train, it would barely slow the rock down at all. But a glancing blow would definitely alter trajectory. Especially if we're talking about a high-yield nuke, in the "megatons" range.

    We need the awesome "Command and Conquer" series of RTS video games - GDI's Ion Cannon to stop the rock if they can build a weapon like this we have not anything to fear. They tried back then with the US plan for the "Star Wars" project but they failed maybe now they can succeed or they have build it and they have it as a secret super weapon. I don't think that with nukes or other ways we can stop an asteroid IMO. Great vid btw.👏👏👌👌

      That's an interesting question. What if a moderate-sized meteorite, roughly the size of the one that formed Meteor Crate in Arizona, impacted above the Yellowstone super-caldera? I think that if the energy released was enough to cause an eruption, the effect of the impact itself would be insignificant relative to the cataclysmic destruction caused by the eruption.

    Apophis's pass-by in 2029 contains very large uncertainty, in itself of trajectory. It can deviate a lot upon close call in that 2029, which is 6 years from now. If we don't do something already by now to nudge it from its current trajectory, then 2036 could turn that we missed opportunity big time. We could send a rendezvour, a ready made satelite that will accompany this wonderer around the sun to catch up and blow next to it, when it departs away from earth in 2029. That blow or explosion is nuclear load and hefty one that will contain water or some expanding staff upon explosion to amplify its effect. So, expanding reaction will not fracture the asteroid but push it away, with enough kilotons to send to, so that, it take 'no-return' route. We could be making big and bigger mistake if we think lightly. It may seem, to miss by a hair width pass nearly a keyhole pass-by, but it could be that it did, just through arrogance of specialists we made fatefull judgement in consideration of all possibilties.
