Palomo Spain presented on September 9th, 2023, the Spring/Summer 2024 collection at New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel, showing a very special collection that goes back to the brand’s roots, reflecting Alejandro’s Spanish heritage and diving into his most romantic and sexual fantasies.
Titled “Cruising in the Rose Garden,” for this collection Alejandro Gómez Palomo dives into the realm of discreet encounters to find inspiration and imagines a world where identities can be expressed without judgment, and moments of ecstasy are found. It is a celebration of love and desire, where individuals seek comfort and pleasure in each other’s arms cherishing the beauty and diversity of human desire.
Humans have two sides, one more animalistic, blinded by carnal desire; and one more romantic, driven by nature and feminine sensuality. The constant battle of both conforms each individual’s personality. This obsessive coexistence between love and desire is further explored against Alejandro’s usual inspirational codes - historical references, Andalusian folklore, street culture and naïve and youthful pop phenomena. The result is a conversation that dissects how contradictions can live within oneself and how a prohibited activity allows for the exploration of desires and the experience of freedom, unburdened by societal norms.
The collection is a retrospective of the iconic pieces of Palomo, with a twist and new vision of relevant pieces or fabrics such as the Ass Air trousers or flamenco-inspired pieces. The collection plays with contrasts both in silhouettes and fabrics, mixing baggy jeans and mini shorts with babydoll dresses and flowing capes; delicate fabrics like silk, lace and linen play around with stronger materials like leather and denim. The color palette gives life to the twilight hours, where intimacy blossoms and hearts find solace, centering itself around light violets, pinks and blues that clash with the deep reds and blacks that evoke a feeling of sensual darkness.
“After presenting a Fall Winter collection that spoke about the freedom of childhood and a naïve approach to gender and clothing, it was the most natural process for me to react against that concept and focus on a more sexualized idea of a character that is now grown and aware of its power of attraction. This time I wanted to reflect on who I am now and allow myself to dive into my most romantic and sexual fantasies while still maintaining my love for storytelling. I also think that as a Spanish designer I have a responsibility to show my heritage and transmit my roots and the spirit of my culture”, said Alejandro Gómez Palomo.
The music for the show was also very special to Alejandro: “I wanted to create a highly evocative atmosphere that felt mysterious and dangerous. It is coated with reminiscences of flamenco which are a reference to my background. The mix feels very modern while still intersecting chants from “Lole y Manuel” and typical clapping which references flamenco nights where art, culture and lust merge. I wanted everyone to be transported elsewhere and for them to forget about New York and the craziness of the moment.”
