Alchemy!? Well no. I have not yet been able to turn lead into gold. Although the Cupel process sure looks like it. This video series is all about melting, smelting, cupelling, roasting, and fire assays. Equipment, chemicals, processes and flux will all be covered. I will be learning right from the basics so this series should be a good way for the armature gold prospector to learn. I will be using the KK8 and Kwik Kiln 2 smelting and cupelling furnaces provided to me from "911 Metallurgist" and "Gold Processing Kilns" Both links below.
This video is all about roasting gold ore. Heating up sulphides or pyrites hot enough to drive off the sulphur and change the sulfide into a oxide.

I hope everyone is learning what not to do when haphazardly throwing chemicals together on top of a kiln in a pan not designed to take those kinda temps. I'm sure your neighbors were thrilled to be getting gassed though. Lol!!! This is entertaining though.

Arnþór Gíslason finally! Someone who thinks like me and has health safety of yourself and others in mind! I’ve been sketching up a contraption to extract and trap harmful fumes of leaching, roasting and smelting and am extremely shocked at the lack of concern youtube wide for these very dangerous procedures. At least if they don’t care about their own health they should be concerned of others/environment. The neighbor child is standing there raking leaves for crying out loud! How is “not going to breath any of this smoke” those fumes and toxins become invisible...how do you track where they go??? How does he know they didn’t go straight into that little boys lungs. How wreckless.

Looks like some nice ore there!
Be careful with those arsenic bearing ores though, as they can contain nearly half arsenic by weight (46% for FeAsS - arsenopyrite), which volatilizes off and reacts to form some very nasty and quite deadly fumes. If proper forced ventilation and elevated and/or scrubbed exhaust can not be set up, a full-face respirator with cartridges specifically designed for arsenic should be used by anyone within the vicinity of the fumes. The sulfur compounds aren't nearly as nasty, but they do form sulfuric acid on contact with moisture and will corrode anything in the path of the fumes quickly. Exploring a wet chemistry , electrochemical, or bioleaching protocol may prove both safer and more efficient for your refractory ores in bulk, but the exact protocol is highly ore dependent, which is one of the drawbacks vs. roasting.

I would not be doing the roasting without a full industrial or military grade respirator or gas mask with specific filters. IIRC, the type of mask/filters you are using are not safe against the vapors coming off the ore.
It is not a safe thing to heat black sand inside as there could have mercury and its vapors are deadly also.

    • @Danhurd

No way to tell as some veins have 100% of their gold free milled. Some have lots locked up in sulfides. .1 in a 5 gallon bucket I would consider quite rich.

@@Danhurd I hand picked best samples only from vein, the problem is with crushing it. The KnM crusher I bought annoyed me from constantly clogging the mech eventually it broke down, destroyed bearings fast. I'm planning to give a second try. So have to process like 45 buckets of ore just to get 4.5 gram gold? Not sure if it makes sense to do it. Maybe smelting might help to recover more...

My cons have sulfur, prevents SMB from working. Will this process work? Cons in AR warm, increments nitric and HCl till no reaction, filter, rinse, back into pot hot to denox add HCl twice then water, stir in zinc, filter precip, rinse, dry then take precip put in hot HCl 24 hrs, filter rinse real good, then put precip into nitric/water hot 24 hrs filter and melt with oxy/acet torch. Not worried about silver loss, I am after the gold and pgm's. Zinc drops all metals, then HCl soak and Nitric/water soak to remove all junk metals, but gold and pgm's. Is this process correct? Does the zinc grab all the metals in the AR, then HCl and nitric/water remove the junk metals leaving AU,Pd,Pt&Rh? I was told the hot nitric/water will remove my palladium.

Hey Dan thanks go out to you and your dad. I sent a sample off to a assayer, yes gold and iron sulfides, but wouldnt tell me what process or flux to use. I have been going crazy trying to figure it out. I rock crush, gold cube, ball mill, roast. my roasted stuff has a red tint to it. Before i was told to add salt and roast at 1,100 degree. Found not correct, salt turns to sodium chloride and helps burn off fine gold. So now just roasting nothing added, at 400-500 for about 3 hours till no sulfur smell. I bought retort, so going to try ball mill and mercury. I tried chapman flux, gold kept hanging up in the slag. So now trying Legend assay flux, with lead? Any input on this all would be greatly appreciated teacher. Thanks again for roasting video.

    • @Danhurd

I tried so many smelts and nothing but iron matte with gold color in it. I am going to try your flux recipe you just used. how do I stop the iron matte? Will the lead pull the gold down through and no iron in the lead?

      I noticed your temp's was 900 & 1,000 celcius. Isn't 1,650 & 1,850 low. I thought 1,950 and up? Also you pre-heated crucible. A reason for this? You used clay crucible's. I have graphite. Is there a difference?

A lot of that smoke is coming from the metal the pan is made from, and maybe the coating on the pan. Cast iron works a lot better for roasting sulfides. I think you can oxidize using 30% or higher hydrogen peroxide as well, but propane method is definitely cheaper. 👍👍

Dan, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you have to get a good amount of gold before you smelt. You're a good dude Dan, so don't take this the wrong way, it's mere constructive criticism. There are guys who smelt tens of ounces per week in the Yukon. Why would we listen to a guy who gets mere grams per week when it comes to tips? You just learned to smelt, and you're trying to tell everyone how to smelt. Think about it Dan. You just got your amelter and you're telling everyone how to do it. I'd want to listen and take tips from the guy whos been smelting for years and years and smelts hundreds of ounces. I don't know about listening to the guy who just bought his smelter. Dan, go get some tips from professional smelters who've been doing it for years before you tell us how to do it. Seriously.
