Just found this channel few days ago, and already addicted to it. As a hungarian phrase says "i drink all your words". As a hungarian i really wondery what is your opinion about hungarian wines. It should be a dream come true, if you taste some kind of wines from our famous regions like Tokaj, Villány, Eger or Badacsony and share your experiences with us. Keep this great way on!
Happy to come across your comment. Discovered the great wines of Hungary last year on holiday in Hungary. Started to wonder why we don't find it (or only 1-2 bottles) in stores here in the Netherlands. May really be worth letting Western Europe discover Hungarian wine. Plus, it seems Tokaj is on the way to restoring its former glory. Quite smart of the Rothschilds and the AXA insurance company, among others, heavily investing in Tokaj land and winemaking after the communist era (which drastically deteriorated wine quality), it seems like a foolproof investment.
Love this channel, finally found someone who gives out solid information, keeps it short and interesting and cover a lot of wine related topics. Good Job!!
I tasted a 3.3 star Nero d'Avola (Gaetano d'Aquino) and I was surprised by how good it was. I'm not sure if my palate isn't yet educated enough, but I actually found it very good. It tasted of plum, a bit of chocolate and a bit of rosemary.
Previously, I used Delectable to search for wine. My impression is that it was used by a more educated audience than Vivino. Especially in Russia, where at that time (about 8 years ago) people gave undeservedly good marks to bad wines in Vivino, which spoiled the experience. But now Delectable has turned into abandonware, and Vivino, on the contrary, has improved considerably. However, I still miss Delectable.
can i just say, thank you so much. The amount of information given, time and dedication is amazing! You can't find quality education like this, without paying a steep price!
Maybe a tasting of the most popular wines on Vivino/wines with the highest number of ratings for the next video in this series? Always interesting to hear the perspective of a MW on the bottles that are on supermarket shelves around the world.
I like this idea because those wines are probably more widely available. I can only find the Yellowtail Chardonnay here, but it is Oaked, unfortunately, so actually I find zero of these wines in my area
Am I missing something? Didn't he say that he just did a video tasting the highest rated wines on vivino a couple weeks ago at the begining of this video?
Retsina you don't drink for the taste, you drink it because you're used to it and you have sweet memories of getting drunk in warm Greek nights with friends or strangers and more and more outrageous conversations.
Just discovered your channel, finally a decent wine vlog. Your style, content and demeanour is engrossing and I am busy watching your backlog catalogue of videos. Please keep them coming. I would like to see a review of really obscure wines and not just the mainstream
This is like a really informative comedy sketch about wine, every time you threw the cork (or cap) around the room I couldn't stop laughing. In general I think there are so many good wines at
Why is it hard to give bad wine low scores? The Il Bianco you sampled you mentioned tasted absolutely like nothing, yet you still gave it a score over 70. How come? Thank you in advance-- I love this channel!
Great videos, congrats! I think it would be interesting to find a way to distinguish popular and quality wines. It's tough i know, but it's worth an effort. Thanks!
Ive started to enjoy your channel. First few videos was not sure about the sense of humor, but it actually grew on me. I love your honesty when you get the blind tastings wrong - full points in my book. Would be great to see your review of Supertuscan and Napa wines.
Once more a cool and insightful video, thanks for sharing, Konstantin! One question: how do you actually translate between Vivino points and the 100 points system? Thanks!
This is one of your best videos! Very entertaining and educational. I’d like to see a comparison between the converted Vivino score and yours when you rate each wine, though, because it’s hard to get a sense of scale sometimes. Are 2.8 stars a 78, for example?
The difference between white and red wine scores is interesting and it is completely in sync with my personal experience - whenever I visit a place where I suspect they serve bad wine, I always choose red wine because I find bad red wines more bearable than bad white wines. Is there any expert explanation of this phenomenon?
There are many explanations. Reds usually come last in a tasting or a menu and are therefore considered the highlight. They are often more expensive to make and in certain markets like China they are considered to be more valuable because of their colour. There was a time when white sweet wines were more expensive.
My problem with Vivino is the wide descriptions of wine. You can tell when a serious wine person gives a review, but often a review says “Too Sweet” while another says “Too Dry”🤔
Hey Konstantin, I was wondering how it comes that you described the wines mire or less as "not drinkable" but you gave them quite high parker points. According to what you said, I expected points around 50 to 60
Is it connected to the pricing of the wine? A mediocre wine with a great price is maybe a good thing, as opposed to a little better wine that is very overpriced....
I would love to hear what you say about the San Marzano Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria. It has a 4.5 Star rating on Vivino, people love it (including lots of my friends) but I think it's too sweet and highly overrated...
Interesting, as I was almost expecting the lower rated wines to be better than the others you reviewed on the assumption that the more highly rated wines are created more for a general audience. Great vid!
Love your channel! Ah Yellowtail. Genuinely awful. There is a reason why it is sold here in Australia for $7 a bottle. I use it in cooking but that’s about all it is good for.
Bill Naova I’ve never had that one. For $6, probably can’t complain. de Bortoli do some great wines though. They produce 350,000 dozen a year, so a big producer and one of the oldest in the Yarra Valley.
I really hate Yellowtail with a passion but one thing that I have to give them is that I never had one that was seriously flawed, like corked or anything. They produce consistent medium-low quality wines, like an efficient but soulless factory.
Loving your channel Konstantin, having discovered it just a couple of weeks ago. Have learned plenty already and loving the style of the videos. Great work! Any chance of something on Chenin Blanc?
All kinds of sulphuric smells - burnt match, rubber, rotten egg, skunk (reduced rosé is vomit-inducing for me 🤮), etc. A bit of reduction on some whites can be nice, but anything that doesn’t go away after a couple of seconds is a flaw, in my book.
Maybe you could make a video on some dessert wines, it seems there aren't many videos about that type of wine. I actually never bought a dessert wine myself and I wouldn't know how to best pair it with food, but I had an nice one in a restaurant a few weeks ago and it sparked my interest.
You owe it to yourself to taste some port then! I also hadn’t tried many dessert wines before, and now I’m in love with them, especially port. A good sweet wine can be the dessert all by itself, or you can pair it with confectionery, cheeses or fruit. Ideally, the wine will be sweeter than the dish, although this isn’t always possible.
Eheh. Keep trying. I think we don't have regions relevant enough to deserve attention (except Port of course). It's funny. I was listening to a pod cast from an american journalist that mentioned the Encruzado white wine as one of the best but people in the States wasn't buying it because normaly it costs less thah 10$.
This video is amazing and proves once again that Vivino is very useful for people who are not experts in wine but do love to experiment good ones. Of course this channel is awesome and the videos are amazing but the ratings are going to be different between Konstantin and Vivino's users. Konstantin tastes the finest wines in this world thanks to his profession, his palate is used to the best wines which ours aren't. I wont be using Konstantin's ratings as a reference but his knowledge is gold! Thanks a lot Konstantin.
Konstantin - good videos. I have a challenge for you. Go to Egypt, and taste their wines and rate them. When I moved to Egypt I asked an Italian about Egyptian wine (only thing you can buy locally), his response was "It's better than no wine". Curious to see your view!
Great pair of videos. I wonder what you think about CellarTracker scores vs Vivino. I've found so many Vivino scores where the person thinks they're reviewing a white wine when its actually a red & vice versa. I've never found any similar mistakes on CellarTracker.
Have never tried retsina, because to me this isn't actually wine at all because according to my personal definition wine isn't wine anymore if you have added something (Yes I know there are also some additives in normal wine like sluphur but I think you know what I mean) and your video didn't increase my curiosity on retsina but nice to watch anyway. Can't really answer your question of the day because I am not on vivino very often. Apart from that congratulations to you for 10.000 subscribers!
I use Vivino to help me not buy again a wine I gave a low score in the past, could not care less for the overall score. I have scored a few 1 or 1,5 stars, most are between 2,5 and 3,5 stars, and rarely score a 4,5 or 5.
Hi Konstantin - Would you happen to have any recommendations for a book on wine growing? What's iconic? Or, perhaps this would make an interesting vid?
Only found this channel recently and absolutely love the content and down to earth nature. I grew up in South Africa, then moved to Paris and now London. I worked in many restaurants in South Africa and I find it very disappointing to see so few of the great wines making their way into Europe. Many of the major producers are capable of running large scale export businesses and it saddens me to think that South Africa is so criminally underrated as a wine region within Europe. Tokara Telos
Thelema mountain vineyard merlot is pretty great value/quality and comes to mind. Though I honestly haven’t had many wines from South Africa that I remember.
It's pretty interesting how it's hard to find really low scores on Vivino. I think there's a lot of wines on there that have scores they don't deserve. You should review the Apothic Inferno... would love to hear what you think.
Wondering if you would ever review boxed wine? I know wine is surging in sales right now and I'll bet it's in large part to boxed wine. Are any reputable people doing it? Does the bag hurt flavor? Are there any worth it? Lots of boxed wine questions!
Hi! I really enjoy your videos! A wine from Vivino I would really like if you tried is: Edizione Cinque Autoctoni. It has a 4.3 stars, which means it should be great. But after drinking it, I was so disopointed. Please try it and give us your review
I think white and rose wines get overlooked in the wine community. You should a Pinot Grigio test where you try different Pinot Grigios at different price points (from high volume to small production level).
If I may, I'd like to suggest a topic for your next vídeo! As Brazilians love Argentina's wine (because of the price we can get them here) you could record your critics about them.
I would love to see a review of the Sonoma-Cutrer wines. They make a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both in the $20-$30 range that seem really good to me for the money.
If you’re going to taste more SA wines I recommend you get your hands on some Rust en Vrede Syrah, Delaire Graff Reserve Cabernet etc. Certainly no MW but at least aspiring WSET4 Student who lived in Stellenbosch for a while. Grüsse aus der Schweiz
I'm not sure whether the scores you mentioned were the overall scores across all vintages, or score of the vintage that you're tasting (I would assume the former, because I don't think these wines have that many ratings for each vintage). but I've seen in vivino that some wines have totally different score for different vintages, especially if the vintage was good or bad in the region. with that said, I request a clip talking about your insights and opinions about vintages (how much it matters, and vintage scores from RP, WE, WS, etc.) Thank you!
I appreciate your expertise! I do have to say however that I cringed when I saw you swirl the sparkling wine (shouldn't be done unless your trying to remove the bubbles). Have you rated any boxed wines? I'd be very interested in hearing your opinion on those (available in the US)
I might do a boxed wine tasting. On the swirling point - I do think that it is important to swirl sparkling wines in order to be able to smell them. The loss of CO2 is not a big issue when assessing the wine as you can determine the CO2 level with the first sip.
Plese try the Farnese Edizione Cinque Autoctoni. 4.3 rating, almost 60k ratings and not cheap at around 22€. Yet, i was so overwhelmed with the flavors and it tasted so manipulated and manually improved. Maybe i need new tastebuds and would love to hear your opinion. Thanks
Vivino has California cabernet sauvignon wines rated 4.4 for under 30 dollars. So far I've agreed with the consensus of reviewers. By contrast in an email I got today from Vivino were well known Bordeaux that were lower rated and stupid expensive. I had all but two of these wines in my cellar from top rated years 89 and 90 I sold off through Sotheby’s. I much prefer California wines. Superb wines Vivino sells at killer prices and free shipping in the US for orders of 150 dollars or more. For 6 dollars a case they'll pack it with ice which is good in the summer. I'm a happy customer.
OMG...Laughing about the comment of how bland it is and just drinking it to get drunk...Thanks for listening to our input...Still waiting for a Sauvignon Blanc tasting from you in the moderate price range please $30 and under??
One of my more recent ones I've had recently is a Vivino rating 4.4 I believe. It's Paratus Cabernet Sauvignon (2014) out of Mount Veeder, CA. It was incredible!
Would love your opinion on Muralhas de Monção Vinho Verde (the white not the rose). I love this wine. In Portugal it sells for about three euros. I don’t know how they do it. Maybe I just have a taste for cheap wines but would like to know what you think. Also Esporão private selection 2011 tinto. Not so cheap but a beautiful wine. What a nose! Los your channel keep it up.
Hi, i´m from Chile, i also work on the wine industry and i just tried one of the best wines i ever tasted, i hope you can enjoy it some day... is the Icon wine from Maquis Vignard called FRANCO, it´s a Cabernet Franc, very especial...Cheers!
I'm always curious about a vintage and various producers and how they compare. Like 2016 brunello di montalcino. Vivino users rank almost all of them similar yet I find big differences! Or even the different years 2015 vs 2016. 😊🍷
Please try the Hans Greyl Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It has a 4.2 rating (top 1% wines in the world) and is distributed by Vivino (and some supermarkets like Edeka) for 7€. I found it a bit bland and would really appreciate your opinion.
Another entertaining video, thanks. Hopefully I will never have a need to try these wines I think it’s great you sacrificed your palate for our entertainment, Danke sehr. P.S. I joined Vivino back in 2007 at the insistence of my colleagues at the office, very subjective ratings but useful when out for dinner.
Very funny and interesting video. Vivino can be good if used wisely, but however there are a lot opinions of people that do not have a great understanding! Overall, it can be useful as an indication!
Just wondering, why do you need a 100-score scale when something really bad already gets 65 points? What would it be for 50 points or 30 points, or even less?
If you ever want to taste a really nice Chilean Malbec, the Altamana Grande Reserve Malbec is delicious, and great value as well. More of an old world style, akin to Cahors.
The worst wine I tasted this year was Les Carabènes Pinot Noir 2020. It didn't really taste bad, it was more like wine-flavoured water. No body, no aroma, no taste, no reaction upon tasting. Glad it was only 12€, but you could get very nice pinot noir with 14€ in my country, like Jean Bicher Pinot Noir, for example, which is quite basic P. Noir and it works for many occasions.
I love Zweigelt, quite an underrated grape, not a long time ago i try a 1999 Beerenauslele, really interesting and now i'm looking forward to drink the other bottle i have, Zweigelt Eiswein 1997.
Fun video, thanks for taking several for the team (not that I would have tried any of these anyway). It´s somewhat amazing to me that they can grow grapes, make a decent wine, ship it from South Africa and sell it for $4. Land costs, growing the grapes, picking the grapes, pressing, fermenting, aging, bottling, costs of the bottle, cap, cardboard for the case, label, shipping across the ocean, distribution, stocking in the store...it boggles the mind.
Still giving to many points like a lot collegue professionals do , for very simple, bland wines. I don't give a very simple, not nice, non-tasty wine 69 or 75 points. We all should give such wines 55 or 50 or 45 points.
I’m twenty seconds in and I’m just going to say that I can guarantee that Domane Wachau does not deserve to be on the same table as Yellow Tail or scary looking retsina.
There are so many bogus wine ratings out there, and a producer will generally only advertise a rating on the bottle if it's above 90 points, but if a $4 bottle of wine can get a *legitimate* 80 point score, I think that's actually something to brag about.
i had the leopards leap for my wedding wine, wasn't the worst I've had. But I bought it because I knew people wouldn't appreciate the wine so I wasn't going to spend much
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Chianti vs Brunello. All level, classico, riserva, Grand selezion, including rosso montalcino (put up against chiati classico). What do you say?
Really enjoyed the video. I figure most Vivino ratings are from non-professionals like me, so don’t trust them at all. Have you ever published a listing of your ratings? I would trust your opinion of a wine.
Interesting, as I am somewhat the opposite. I am somewhat skeptical of pro reviews, unsure about their motives, while more inclined to rely on opinions from other amateur enthusiasts like myself. Ultimately, I try to consider both.

Wondering if you would ever review boxed wine? I know wine is surging in sales right now and I'll bet it's in large part to boxed wine. Are any reputable people doing it? Does the bag hurt flavor? Are there any worth it? Lots of boxed wine questions!
Interesting Topic !
Can you do some Negru de Dragasani wine, can be Avincis or Stirbey, danke
Hi! I really enjoy your videos! A wine from Vivino I would really like if you tried is: Edizione Cinque Autoctoni. It has a 4.3 stars, which means it should be great. But after drinking it, I was so disopointed. Please try it and give us your review
Thanks!
Keep it up Konstantin, much love from Australia
Thanks Ben!
Dude, so funny! You are also very fair. Love the vids!
I think white and rose wines get overlooked in the wine community. You should a Pinot Grigio test where you try different Pinot Grigios at different price points (from high volume to small production level).
Interesting idea!
If I may, I'd like to suggest a topic for your next vídeo!
As Brazilians love Argentina's wine (because of the price we can get them here) you could record your critics about them.
Great suggestion!
As a Greek working in restaurants I never seen those tsantali retsina wines in my whole life
I would love to see a review of the Sonoma-Cutrer wines. They make a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both in the $20-$30 range that seem really good to me for the money.
Good idea!
fascinating :) thanks for a fun and informative video, yet again 👍
Thank you!
Thanks!
I'm not sure whether the scores you mentioned were the overall scores across all vintages, or score of the vintage that you're tasting (I would assume the former, because I don't think these wines have that many ratings for each vintage).
but I've seen in vivino that some wines have totally different score for different vintages, especially if the vintage was good or bad in the region.
with that said, I request a clip talking about your insights and opinions about vintages (how much it matters, and vintage scores from RP, WE, WS, etc.)
Thank you!
Good idea!
Cooler channel Konstantin 👍
Wie wäre es mal mit einem griechischen Lineup? Wäre cool zu sehen 😁✌️
Stimmt!
Thanks
Interesting
Interesting
OMG...Laughing about the comment of how bland it is and just drinking it to get drunk...Thanks for listening to our input...Still waiting for a Sauvignon Blanc tasting from you in the moderate price range please $30 and under??
Glad you liked it!
Thanks!
😊🍷
Yes, there are big differences
Please review Sansonina Evaluna! Excellent wine (imo) from a small vineyard in Italy.
Thanks
Please try the Hans Greyl Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It has a 4.2 rating (top 1% wines in the world) and is distributed by Vivino (and some supermarkets like Edeka) for 7€. I found it a bit bland and would really appreciate your opinion.
Thanks for the suggestion!
vinology .... 10% (personal) taste and 90% snobbery ... and for guiding you through that 10% you've got guys like Konstantin ... good video
Amazing content! Brazilian's are very into Vivino and it is awful to see how they rely on it for the (bad) wine choices! Kkk
I'm Brazilian and I totaly agree with you.
Interesting!
😃
In terms of South African wines please see if you can find Delaire Graff Botmaskop and Meerlust Rubicon. Also give Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage a try.
Could you do a video on North American grape hybrids and varietals?
That would be interesting
I agree. I dont think that the producer is making a profit at this price.
Can you make a video on the German wine classification system? It's sooooooo confusing for me!
Great idea!
Off the top of your head, is there a Retsina you could recommend?
Kechris Tear of the Pine.
@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Thank you!
😄
Vivino best value wines. I've recently enjoyed Desire Lush & Zin Primitivo by Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine. Phenomenal value.
Thanks!
just watching the first 30 seconds, my guess is Wachau will be on top...lets continue watching and see...
There are so many bogus wine ratings out there, and a producer will generally only advertise a rating on the bottle if it's above 90 points, but if a $4 bottle of wine can get a *legitimate* 80 point score, I think that's actually something to brag about.
I feel like I would enjoy good retsina since I like resiny flavours like myrrh, but it seems good ones are extremely hard to come by....
i had the leopards leap for my wedding wine, wasn't the worst I've had. But I bought it because I knew people wouldn't appreciate the wine so I wasn't going to spend much
great video!
do a video on primitivo please!
You should review Meiomi Pinot Noir from California, I would be very interested in your review.
Cool!!
Now I know what to give as a gift!😁😁😁
Which wine are you going to give?
Do a tasting of Chianti wines please. Thank you.
Yes! & at all levels - basic, classico, riserva, gran seleczione (sp?) - not lumped in together.
Chianti is worst wine from italy. Just use it to wash your foot.
@@seminky5341 then why don’t you do a tasting of the “better” wines from Italy. By the way, I disagree with your assessment!
Good idea!
@@guermeisterdoodlebug7980 Good point. I guess we need something like a CFN (Certified Wine Fiduciary), who only acts in our best interests to rate wines.
Thanks. Yes, I do publish my ratings in my videos and on the wines that I import for my business meinelese.de
