I was actually speaking with a librarian the other day and she mentioned that the books are disappearing. Meaning some higher government entity is removing them from the shelves so people don't have access to them. The book bans have already started way before they were open about banning books.
She also mentioned that alot of the old internet archives that had alot of old books that are no longer under copywright are being wiped.
People really should start collecting the old unabridged classics, because at some point they won't be available for the public anymore.

I am glad you mentioned this because I am going to touch on this in next week's coffee break. Library discarded books and how to get them. The more I think about it the more I realize how important this issue is becoming. Many people that have stopped at our stand have told us that they are concerned that history is being changed, e-books can be turned off, books might one day be unavailable, etc. We've even had several people only interested in books that have been published prior to certain years. Whatever the reason, our sales are up this year. I've shared this video on Twitter and Facebook. Perhaps it will set a spark in more people. Keep up the good work. :)

It's so interesting to see the concept of a banned book becoming such a polarizing topic. The most terrifying part about this to me are the real banned books are the ones we will never know about. It's not the ones in the museums with thousands of copies being paraded as a "banned book". It's the ones where the powers that be conspire to buy every copy to make it unavailable, release a new edition with modified content, make it unavailable online, etc. Its the ones that get small publishers harrassed or bought out by the big ones. It's no coincidence that all the big publishers are owned by the same people. Thank you for making this video.

    • @Nightman-eb8mj
      @Nightman-eb8mj 3 місяці тому

You need to look into piracy. Look into Samizdat movements, like modern Libgen and similar. If you want to preserve a book, get it in .epub or other digital formats, clean it and upload it to one of those sites. It's illegal, but it's also necessary. Eventually, they'll come after those sites and their serves, so you have to do it yourself.
Research important topics, find the best books on it and then become the one who saves it.
There is great interest in keeping the books, but there's an even greater interest in destroying them.

What you say is so true. I read a quote from a writer decades ago that said much the same thing. Agreed, those people in the early days of our country had libraries in their homes, like TJ who donated his after the Library of Congress had been burned down by the British. With todays tech you can have as large a Library as you want - digitized - and print out those books you want to. I have a large collection of Authors - Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Dole, Paterson, and others that I downloaded from a torrent site years ago. I've lived my entire life in a town which is home to a large, state-run university. Although my high school had its own library and my town has a public library, by the time I was in high school, my teachers were demanding of all of us pupils that we do the research for our research papers in the university library. Fortunately for us, anyone who was a "resident" (better expressed as "inhabitant") of my state could obtain a library card from the university library absolutely free of charge. After I became a university student, I saw the university library gradually become more and more restrictive during my time there. About a year after I got my master's degree and left the university, the library there changed its policy so that if one wasn't a professor or a student, one could have no access to the library without paying a $50 fee every semester. It was at that point that I said "screw this" and began amassing my own library. That was thirty years ago. Fortunately for me, at that same time I read Adler's _How to Read a Book,_ so the content of my library has some direction to it. It was Adler's book that alerted me to the fact of just how much I was cheated in my education.

Check it out because the one I used o go to ALWAYS had a lot of books - GOOD books! I found hard covers on Adams, Franklin ( Franklins Autobiography), I found the whole hard cover six volume set on Thomas Jefferson by Dumas Malone. One day I went there and there were maybe 40 books on the Civil War ( obviously someone’s collection who died, and the family gave it away. Out of that, I only bought a book on Lincoln which tells what tyrant he really was ( if you notice his monument, he’s seated on a throne lol - POS bastard, BUT he was shot, so he must have done somethng right, or the world oligarchic mafia wouldn’t have killed him. I found books in french ( which was weird because i live in Michigan), new books: Victor Hugo’s Notre de Paris, Le Petit Prince, new French English dictionaries, and books on verbs, all new. I found Shakespeare, things by the ancient Greeks and Romans ( my favorites, especially the Greeks and most especially Aristotle). Nothing cost me more than 2 or 3 dollars. My hardcover Jefferson set cost me 12.00 total. I guess you get the point.
I go to a lot of resale stores, because there are a bunch of them, near me, and some have a lot of books, but those books are 99 percent garbage -HOWEVER -- That St. Vincent was a gold mine, that never seemed to run out of gold. So, if you have one near you, you MUST check it out, and hopefully, it will be like the one I used to go to. Of course I must confess I don’t read, but I buy the books to safeguard knowledge. I might not read, but I know what’s worth reading and having in a personal library. Hope all that made sense. I like to write, but i don’t like to proofread and I type like someone with two broken index fingers, my fingers of choice when it comes to typing. I don’y read but I do journal, and that’s hop I practice and learn french. And just as an aside, since ai can never shut up, IF you are so inclined to learn a language, specifically French, ask me, and I can direct you to the best resources and methods to learn it. Czech Proverb: “Learn a new language, get a new soul.” THAT is TRUE. Nothing has ever stimulated my mind like “trying” to learn french. Did you know 40% of english comes from french? That’s because of William the Conqueror, and the Norman Invasion in 1088. The “ English” royals ( who weree after William french speaking vikings lol) spoke french, not english, so for the next 300 years that’s what the royals spoke. Did you know Richard the Lionhearted, the English national hero, didn’t speak english? He also came from France, slightly south of Normandy. I never knew that. Sorry. I ramble like a runaway train rumbling down a mountain side once I get started. Excuse my typing, and spelling.

It's like when Ballantine Books released the Bal-Hi Edition of "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury for high school students. It had changes made to not offend their young minds. It is a book about critiquing censorship, and the official publisher of the book was slowly censoring the book.
After Bradbury had them immediately stop and only print the original, uncensored version, he added a Coda section and said, "Fire-Captain Beatty...described how the books were burned first by minorities, each ripping a page or a paragraph from this book, then that, until the day came when the books were empty and the minds shut and the libraries closed forever."
I originally wanted to type out the conversation between Beatty and Montag when Beatty says, "...the word 'intellectual,' of course, became the swear word it deserved to be." Then I realized I wanted to quote nearly 7 pages from Beatty arrives to when he leaves Montag's house. So if you're interested, the full conversation is on pages 51-58 in Fahrenheit 451. I have the 60th Anniversary Edition, but it should be on a similar page number for other uncensored versions.

If preservation of knowledge is the aim, I would also recommend building a digital library as well. I know some like/do not like to read ebooks (I'm indifferent) but it is good to store these in multiple mediums. If we are drawing from dystopian fiction, Farenheit 451, for example, is about *physical* books being burned. Even if we never see a time like that, what happens if your house floods or catches fire by accident? All of those books would be lost. Back them up in case of emergency. It also helps share what may become rare knowledge with others by just copying the files and giving it to them. I would recommend against Amazon kindles because while they are easy and portable, Amazon could remove a book and you would lose access to it. Use PDFs and EPubs, storing stuff on your computer, phone, or a more open ereader (I use a supernote nomad and love it.) This doesn't negate having a physical library, in case something were to happen to your digital storage, but it adds useful redundancy

Stumbled across this video and wanted to say "kudos" -- I agree with you completely on the importance of building one's own physical library, no matter the genre or topics of interest, but especially in acquiring unabridged pre-1950 books going all the way back to the Classics of Greece and Rome, etc., if that is where one's interest lies.. I'm in my 60s, dismayed by where our society seems headed (I pray it isn't full-on "1984"), and so also agree with most of your comments. I pray I live long enough to pass my library on to my grand-nieces and grand-nephews (alas, their parents have no interest in physical books). Thank you for sharing your insights and ideas. Excellent! Thank you for pointing out that review and how part of the book had been removed. years ago I watched a video about universities scanning books and destroying physical copies. If anyone wanted access to the scanned book they had to be alumni of the university. How's that for orwellian? My son LOVES text books and older ones at that. Our own library started destroying older books. We were heart broken. But we have noticed that more of the older books are slipping back into the basement for sale instead of going straight to the recycler. Also, about 4 years ago I went to the library for books on The Great Depression. They didn't have a single book on the subject. The librarian was more shocked than I was.
A lot of people who read will read ebooks. They don't realize the ebook can be removed from their harddrive at any time and they're paying money to rent the books. They don't actually own them. If I'm paying money to read a book, I want to own that book. Thankfully, the last time we were at our library basement sale, the woman who runs it, chatted with us and we left with three large boxes. We bought a lot of history and older books. I told her I love whomever it was that donated all of these older books and appreciate the library selling them. Hopefully she'll realize their importance.
I'm looking forward to your next video on building a home library Rob. 👍👍

Orwell and Ray Bradbury knew what they were talking about. I think Bradbury was more on point than Orwell, but that could be personal preference. Glad to hear you like Fahrenheit! Funnily enough Bradbury wrote that book in the basement of a library on a rented typewriter.
Another good one, that sort of shook me, was a short story by him called "Bright Phoenix" which is a sort of prequel to Fahrenheit. Book burning is just starting up, and the librarian gives them the books. But what was interesting was the fact that everyone in the town could quote the great books! Like it was air in the lungs. It scared the firemen so bad they left. But what sort of struck me there was this. There isn't a town, anywhere!, in modern America that has an entire population who can quote the Bible, Abraham Lincoln, or the Great Poets. If we could get a population together, to actually be interested, there would be no need to worry about book burning. However, as Bradbury himself said, "there is more than one way to burn a book. And many people are running around with lit matches."
Again, thank you for sharing with us these great books, Mr. Milton. 😉

I always say that my books are my most priced possessions (probably not only metaphorically but literally 😅).
And hell, even if I politically lean towards progressivism/liberalism, that censorship and modification of past works for the sake of "inclusivity" is awful, how are we truly going to move forward if we are this condescending and dismissive of the past?

Live and let live is my view on it. If you do not like it don't read it or create something new but do not change it because you disagree. That starts to enter dangerous territory. There is an additional problem that you didn’t mention. Young people who don’t experience physical media are losing the ability to recognize genre and credibility differences that physical media would have trained them to recognize. What’s the difference between a newspaper and a blog? Nothing on the visual level if they both reside on a webpage. But the difference between a physical copy of the Times and a pamphlet that someone wrote at home is immediately obvious. I’m no economist, but I also wonder about the stability of an economy where physical money is someday irrelevant.

I am seeing something even worse lately. One example is a channel apparently dedicated to the works of CS Lewis. What I found was that some of the material was AI Generated in the style of Lewis, and it was even using an AI generated copy of his voice for the narration. Most people could tell thst it was an AI voice but many of the comments were asking, I can tell that the voice is AI, but which work from Louis was this text originally from?” Its very troubling to see where this is leading. As you described in your video, the samr troubles come to my mind.
This has also happened to authors and popular speakers who are still alive. Misattributing AI material to people who make a living on writing and public speaking.I always imagined that people were smart enough to keep educational and historical resources safe, but now I am afraid it is becoming more like Orwell imagined.

I find it utterly terrifying and revolting that people would change a book without the author’s explicit permission. If you don’t like/agree with a book, write your own.
I can’t stand abridged versions either. They are, by definition, not what the author intended.

My problem is not the capability to build up a library. I have the luxury of enough surplus money for that. My problem lies in the fact that I tend to prioritize more dopamin rich activities. Because of that, the number of pages I read per day isn't too large.
Also technology is at a point where they could manipulate and change any digital copy you own, especially if they are on a cloud. Its funny because this video reminds me of how Sun & Steel by Mishima is basically impossible to find a physical copy of nowadays. Most likely because Mishima's proposal might be seen as dangerous alt-right or fascist ideology or at the very least contradictory to modern values. Makes you wonder how much popular philosophy could have been twisted from it's original text such as Nietzsche seeing how he's so controversial in his relation to Nazism.

Rob, thanks for these! I've been buying my beans for about 30 years from our legendary roaster, John, at Salt Lake Roasting Co.I didn't realize you had another channel. Wow! It was great just seeing your sense of humor.
I fully agree with having physical media. I'm a classical music/opera geek and it's amazing to me how limited the ability to purchase CDs has become. Even on Amazon, classic performances that have always been in print are now no longer in print and generally cost a lot via third party. Some great works have become rare because ideas or concepts don't reflect today's PC values. Even the MET Opera channel has a disclaimer of how past performances might be problematic for today's audiences. It ends with, we are making them available because of the artistic merit we feel they have. Really, aren't I capable of distinguishing how certain practices, such as dark skin makeup for certain roles, might be offensive to today's audience AND aren't I capable of judging artistic merit?
Anyhow my friend, your vids are always welcomed! I'm drinking a nice mocha java blend that was roasted Saturday. I grind my beans right before I put them in my French press. Hell, yeah! God's Peace my friend! Mike

@@The_Cause I was being slightly hyperbolic, of course.
I'm somewhat of a data hoarder. I have a 96TB server at home, of which approximately 24TB are books. I'm in a 3rd world eastern european country, so most books that I'd like to read simply aren't available, and with online orders, getting a paperback or a hardcover is pesky as they don't always arrive, get ruined at Customs and the shipping costs more than the book.
I'm an avid reader, I'll never read all of those books, some of which are duplicates, but many of these things need to be preserved, and given how certain companies had the audacity to remove books off of users' bookreaders, I'd rather hoard eBooks than rely on Amazon and other electronic publishers and distributors for my books.
To me personally (and many would disagree), the medium is irrelevant, the content is what matters. Papyrus, paper, stone tablet, ebook, audiobook, doesn't matter as long as I have the book..
