we used a 440 to run our saw mill way up in northern Ontario. paper pully pressed on the pinion of the automatic transmission to drive the big leather belt..way back in the 80s rest in piece dad,,

My first Mopar was a 1970 Roadrunner... I LOVED THAT CAR... I was 17 years old, just in the US Air Force, in 1975 so got it used for $1395.
I heard 1967 the "Dodge boys" heard their sister division Plymouth was going to build a 'cartoon car' Roadrunner... Dodge corp. laughed at the idea... until sales numbers quickly stacked up and Dodge came up with a "Super Bee".. what the hell is a Super Bee.... A late production car for 1968, Dodge barely sold half as many. meep meep!
My 1st car was a 70 Roadrunner back in 78 and I loved that Mopar as well!
Another great video Steve get well soon I remember the 68 roadrunner when I was in Vietnam I asked my wife to put a down payment on a roadrunner so when I got home we can have a cool car Guess what when I got home she bought us a cougar XR7 what a piece of junk lol never did get my roadrunner

‘68 is easily my favorite year for the RR; round side markers, egg crate grille and the rear end treatment… even the bizarro Roadrunner logos. (the genuine WB logos followed in 1969)

nicest year of RoadRunner 68 , my 70 was originally a base 383 4 speed , guy i bought it from installed a 67 R/T 375 440 out of a really nice coronet that kinda ,sorta didnt need it anymore ..... best first car ever

I had a 1968 Satellite sport 2dr hard top in the early 80's. Just a 318 auto w/ bucket and console. Still a great looking car.
It’s the same car as a Road Runner or a GTX. You just have to add the parts. 😀👍
@@drippinglass Yes your right. Not much parts to add either. I kick myself that back in 1985 (i think) I could have bought a mint condition 69 GTX for $5000 CAD in Winnipeg. They had 2 of them, a red 440 4 spd and a green 383 automatic. I new it was a deal at the time, but life and being newly married got in the way of the purchase.

I hear ya! Luckily I hung on to my cars. A ‘70 Charger and ‘70 ‘Cuda. Both factory 440 Six Pack 4 speed Dana. I got both for about $5k. At the time, a few people I knew thought I overpaid. In a few years it didn’t look like I did. 😁

I couldn't have afforded a road runner until 1973 when I graduated from highschool ,and started working construction. Makes me sick knowing they were so affordable back in the day.

Love moose. Had Two 69 dodge cornets and a 74 Plymouth Duster built for the 1/4 mile. 360 engine from a little red express. Great cars all part of my youth.

My 69 post Roadrunner window sticker was in it when I bought it in the early 80's was 3003.38
4 speed bench seat manual brakes and steering but it had the light package with turn signals indicators on the fenders and the map light.

My favorite of all time car ,and never owned one . My Mom's friend however did . The woman that owned it left it at our house(with the keys) back in '74 while she and her husband were in the process of moving to Hawaii . I never hurt it or beat it but I just enjoyed driving it ,I was 17 .

@@UberLummox The really crazy part is when I drove it ,it was in desperate need of a tune up . I wasn't thinking and ended up on the street she previously lived and pressed on the gas to get out before neighbors spotted it and it popped through the carb and stalled it . It cranked a few times but the battery was at the end of it's life and it wouldn't fire .A kid in the neighborhood volunteered to get someone to jump it . The guy showed up with a 69 RR 383 4 spd . meanwhile the car rolled back as I was cranking it and rolled into the driveway of the house I was trying to get away from . He put the cables on it I fired it up ,he closed the hood and said ; GO . I loved that car .

I still have my B&M series 60 shifter from the early 70s, almost the same as that one.
When I was a PUP (10 yrs "OLD") I BEGGED my dad to trade our '65 Buick "Special" (IT WASN'T!) for a Roadrunner! This DID NOT "work"! I inherited this NIGHTMARE TEN YEARS LATER! WHAT A WORTHLESS SLED!
1968 Roadrunner 383; 4-spd.; Surf turquoise paint was my first car in 1973. Paid $800 for it and street-raced that car unmercifully!
Just like my high school car in the 80's! Except mine was a slant six auto Plymouth Satellite. So the only thing the same was the dash and the carcass. Oh well.
That one appeared to be good enough to save. We can't save them all but, I think I'd take that one.
And definately toss a 4 speed back in. 🐝

Further in the Warner Bros. stuff. In 1969 when Plymouth was developing their A body competitor for the Chevy Nova they went to WB again to talk about licensing the Tasmanian Devil image for the new fastback design. WB saw what a potential cash cow the Road Runner _could_ have been and asked a ridiculous amount of money for the permission. Plymouth passed, and marketed the car as the Duster instead.
That's why the little tornado motif looks like it does.
One of my high school friend's dad owned a 1968 Roadrunner back in the 90's. It was a 383 (the only engine option in 1968?) and a 4 speed. Sadly my friend wasn't a car person, so he rarely drove it. I do remember that it would lift the front left tire off the road under a heavy launch.
The 426 Hemi was the only optional engine in ‘68. 383 standard.

Man she definitely was a beauty back in her hay day! Now who the hell would mess it up by putting a automatic transmission on what it used to be maybe a 4 speed manual transmission!? Sad seeing it in such condition!
Only one thing - Warner Brothers were supposed to have forked over FIFTY thousand dollars to allow re-creation of the "meepmeep" horn sound !!

I'm in the UK, so our spiders are harmless, but I often wonder when I watch Steve's videos, is he in any danger from any of these things?
@@consul6262 most spiders in the northern states are harmless but the big black ones can be poisonous.
@@setevn11 ok ta, not a fan of spiders, even our harmless ones, so it's always on my mind when I see someone investigating abandoned cars. When we were on holiday in Florida many years ago, had a fright on opening a cupboard in our rental, rather large one was inside, it didn't survive, often wondered if it was poisonous!
We have had 3 Roadrunners, a 69 a 71 and a 72, liked the 69 the best. 383 and auto.

Steve. Have you ever seen a 11 bolt Rearend. My dad bought a new 1970 Lemon Twist Roadrunner . 3 speed standard shift. Single pull rear-end. It would pull 70 in 1st gear, 120 in second, and bury the speedo on 150. I have owned several rare mopars. 70 Charger R/T 440 six pack 4 speed Dana 60.,440-6 4 speed cuda,and a 70 Superbird 440 4 speed. 1970 Challenger 440 4 speed go mango orange with burt orange leather interior . Headliner, carpet, the entire car's interior was orange.
Not much could outrun the basic 3 speed standard shift roadrunner on top end
Dang Steve, did you happen to notice that huge tarantula sized spider on the fan clutch that you basically pet at 2:36?
If the clutch pedal is still in place, it could have had a Clutch-Flite installed especially since it has the B&M shifter

Steve, you should know, ALL 68 Roadrunners had bench seats. Buckets didn't become an option until '69 and even then they weren't very common until 1970.
Steve knows that. He mentioned it in another RR 69 video.
@@henryf.ky.3415 I am pretty sure you are right but he looked in this Roadrunner and said it "probably" had a bench seat. I'm sure he know a lot more than me though.
He makes lots of mistakes in lots of videos and never corrects them in the description.
These older videos were definitely filmed and edited better then the newer ones, wish I could go help Steve out with the ne Junkyard Crawl videos

$2900 Bucks is about $24000 Dollars today. I don't know to many 18 year olds that could afford to walk into a Dealership and drop that sort of Money today.

Two door coupe Steve. At least that’s what the manufacturer called them in Every piece of literature they published. What you refer to as a post is actually called a pillar. A post is usually something to tack fence wire to in an effort to keep your cattle from straying. They are two entirely different things.
The GTO had front disc brakes, not all around drums like the RR. 😉
Going fast was number one. Stopping was a afterthought.
You could get optional discs on the Roadrunner and the end price was still lower than the GTO. And even without the discs the Roadrunner was already a much better handling and slightly quicker/faster package overall with the rare Ram Air option being the Goats best chance of catching the Bird.
@@Impactjunky the GTO had one, if not the best suspension on the market with 4-link design and coil springs. The RR was a very basic/cheap car and the suspension was bad. The disc brakes where standard on the GTO. Not saying it was a faster car, but a better car, yes.
@@Yann396 "bad suspension"? I see you sure don't know much about Mopars. I absolutely love the 68-69 GTO but the stiff, fully adjustable suspension and rigid construction of the Mopar unibody is far more effective than the GM body on frame coil sprung design.
The loose factory GM coil springs aren't anywhere near enough for the car adding to the already loose feel you get from a body bolted to a separate frame with rubber spacers in between. Unlike the plastic bolt on inner fenders of a GTO/GM that offer no structural support, the inner fenders and core support of a Mopar unibody are spot welded to the car and integrated into the shock towers for a more rigid design. This makes them a pain in the ass to fix after a wreck but it also makes them lot stronger and a lot better handling.
The Mopar fully adjustable front torsion bar suspension also lets you aggressively adjust camber and caster and independently adjust front "spring"/torsion bar rates even allowing you to run staggered setups for hard launches or round track without swapping any parts. The rear springs are also notoriously stiff and allow zero side to side movement completely eliminating the need for a rear sway bar. There are loads of examples of Mopars getting the front wheels up with the bone stock rear leaf spring suspension and I'm working toward getting mine there as well.
My 68 has the Factory Hemi/big block rear springs and the standard front torsion bars with no sway bar front or rear and the suspension is much more firm and even handles better than most modern cars.
You can also run crazy amounts of tire on a Mopar B body without fitment issues.
Right now I have just over 10.5 inches of rubber on each front and just over 11.5 inches on each rear with room for more. The car drives so good I've managed to get inner wheel lift once in a hard corner which is something most autocross/road course guys brag about.
