I see lots of people not getting hit or not being able to return a ball correctly because they are simply not putting their paddle up. Lots of pros have differing opinions one where the tip should be but the most important thing is that it is up.
Try to remind youself to touch your paddle with your non dominant. hand everytime you are at the kitchen line waiting for the next ball.
