    Interesting perspective. I actually stay clear of Z2 for different reasons. I do about 15-20 % at threshold or v02 (pyramidal) and find that the sessions / days between these workouts need to be Z1 otherwise I am unable to maximize those hard sessions. If you have a mature aerobic engine from years of training and actually train at z2 based on lactate measurements it is really taxing. I have tried this approach and it just doesn’t work. Therefore the sessions around the hard ones are generally Z1. Also, besides the physical demands of Z2 on my easy days mentally I find it far more manageable.

      This makes perfect sense! Totally agree with how taxing Zone 2 can be, especially the longer you go. Your thoughts on keeping the sessions in between very easy are exactly in line with the godfather of training Joe Friel

    Everything I've read is that zone 2 and 3 deliver just about the same benefit, but obviously zone 3 is more taxing and requires more recovery time. I'm time constrained on the bike so I prefer to workout in zone 3. But you need to know your own body and fitness levels, and do what feels right for you and your weekly volume. Also your fueling habits play a big role in recovery.

    I bet most people doing zone 2 training take it too easy and are spending a fair proportion of their workout in zone 1, therefore being less efficient with their time. For me high zone 2 is not easy.

      Really? I thought the conventional thinking was people doing it too hard, frequently in Z3 instead of Z2.

      @@trivelocoaching best description would be inconsistent beginner. Last race was a half tri in 2019, signed up for a full in Arizona and it was cancelled due to Covid. Restarting now with plan for Olympic in June and then go forward from there. I’m 57 so my goals are to stay fit and have fun. Triathlon races give me a goal which helps me to stay motivated. Still want to complete a full. Looking forward to learning from this channel.

    Great stuff. If you only have 5 hours to train does it really matter what zone you ride? 5 hours a week says you aren't serious about improving performance.

    • @99cya
      @99cya 28 днів тому +1

      i guess 5 hours per weeks is fine for an amateur with no ambitions at all and in one discipline. but doing 3 disciplines with just a little bit of ambition. 5 hours cant be the answer.

    Z2 Hurts on the bike, I only use it for recovery maybe once a week. HITT and Threshold work is where its out for this 58 ,57kg climbing sprinter cyclists, long may ot last. Go Zwift and ETNZ!!

    Lots of great information. Zone 2 is great, but only if you have the training time and are actually in zone 2.

    i dont have the patience to listen to all that. i am preparing for an ironman. im doing lots of zone 2 but also high intensity stuff. its around that typical 80/20 distribution. the long bike and run sessions not only train my energy system on that pace but also gives me mental toughness and especially important, they prepare my body (joints, tendons, etc.) for a whole day of doing sports. thats what an ironman is for an average age grouper. its a very very long day of doing sports continously. how on earth can i prepare my body with just 5 hours of training? i highly doubt thats enough. its surely enough to finish the swim and bike session but the marathon at the end would surely destroy me.

      Doesn't have patience but proceeds to make the exact point we make in the episode.. if you can only train 5 hours you probably shouldn't be attempting an Ironman

    Umm really? If I have 5 hours a week to train, I should do all my training at Threshold? This is a pretty bad take for a coach to say. So, you wouldn't worry about injuries by training at threshold for 5 hours a week? dumb, just dumb. Click bait at it's finest. This should be called the "Get Hurt Podcast" - do you guys actually have coaching experience?

    • @trivelocoaching
      @trivelocoaching  27 днів тому +6

      Just a really awful comment from a supposed "fellow" coach in the industry. We did not say do all of your training at threshold 😅 but we referenced our direct conversation with Dr Stephen Seiler (one of the foremost experts on Zone 2 training) around training harder more when you have limited time. Look up our conversation with him before trolling us with insults

      @PsheMeck 18 днів тому +3

      @@trivelocoaching You actually said at 21:43 that, I guess it means something else, but for most it sounded like if you are training 5h/week "you need to spend all of your time in threshold" 🙃 I was surprised too about this statement, I did this year most of my trainings in threshold for Oly distance, and ended up being sick ending taper week (age grouper), so it won't work for me for sure 😉

    • @trivelocoaching
      @trivelocoaching  18 днів тому

      @@PsheMeck It's a nuanced topic because we obviously don't mean train at your threshold for the full 5 hours - the premise being you can afford to train harder when you're training less. And just because you got sick in taper doesn't mean your training was too hard... it could have been many reasons; especially if you managed to train for a long time without getting sick.
      But your comment is fair enough, for the sake of simplicity and avoiding confusion we have taken that specific sentence out

    • @PsheMeck
      @PsheMeck 18 днів тому

      @trivelocoaching as I said in my previous comment, I know it's not that simple and you didn't mean that - but someone else could misunderstood it 🙃 my comment was also simplified - I got 3 times sick on taper week this season for 3 races 🤣 so didnt race at all 🤯and of course that was exaggerating saying threshold all time- usually some easy week after 2-3 weeks block and some tempo stuff 😉anyway my point here is I think being 42 yo in my case I must see what went wrong this season and threshold was the first thing looking back at my training blocks ☺️ good luck with the podcast anyway 💪
