It kills me how they use the examples of getting in line. The problem is if ur not a local and ur 8th in line to catch a wave, that doesn’t mean u get the wave after the dude in front of u. Because if the guy right behind u is a local, he’s going in ur spot! It works more like this, U don’t get a wave until the locals are tired or taking a break! Only sport I know of where ur spot in line don’t mean shit. Can’t get “ups” in surfing. Hell even the ball courts of East Harlem gives u a spot in line!

And we know the reason is that the waves are precious, they're not constant like a basketball court or ball field,… though the beach and water are constant, but not the waves, and waves are typically not for sharing the same wave.
It's not only about respect. They even said it's a plainly "generational area", which means Locals Only mindset. It means if you are not local and you try and surf there, you will get harassed, cut off, assaulted, just depends what lengths they take it to. There are only so many waves per day...
I have surfed there many times and never had any issues. Not only I’m not a local and I’m a female and not very good back then. But I know etiquette, and respect. Like he said this wave is not a beginners wave. Know your place and respect locals!
I grew up surfing PB in the early 80’s (SD Surf Shop and Roper days). Surfed all the La Jolla reefs from PB point to Hospitals. There’s always been a pecking order, tension, and brawls. Back in the day the LJ crew didn’t like the PB crew. Sunset cliffs was insanely localized. I was a local and still got shit. The MB Jetty crew didn’t like the PB crew and vice versa. Sometimes shit happened. If you surf a spot long enough and show respect you’ll eventually get respect. Of course you have to be able to surf well.

Ha Greg... Yessir... I started surfing PB around 1974-75 on a 10' G&S log. I knew my place down a-ways on the south side of the pier, until I got it down. Went up to the north side, watchin Roper do his "Quasimoto". He very purposefully ran me over once or twice, called me a kook and told me to go back to "Squaremont". "Gotcha, Joe". I lived 10 mins from the beach, but bore the sin of being east of the 5. We used to put our 6'10" pintails on the back of the #27 bus at Balboa & Genesee at sunrise, spend all day surfing Crystal Pier, and get a Wimpy Burger at Bernies. My buddies and I knew our place. Never shoulder-hopped anyone, got dropped-in on plenty of times, but usually let it be. Ain't being a pussy, just picking your battles. I had a friend with NO f-ing manners, he'd drop in on anyone (friends included), shoot his mouth off, and got smacked-around good once or twice for it. He f'ing deserved it for his disrespect! Localism just "is". It's a thing you respect, and life is fine. I ended up spending most of my young adult years surfing Black's and Scripps. Respected the LJ crew, and got plenty of waves. If the main peak was a clusterfuck, I'd find another down the beach and surf in peace. Localism just "is". Deal with it, show due respect, don't run your mouth and life is good. Period. Pop off to someone and don't be surprised when they drop into a set wave and bottom turn right at your face when you're paddling back out. It happens. Peace.
Man, that brings back memories. I lived in Claremont for a short period before my parents got divorced. Me and my buddies would take the 27 all the time to the beach (Balboa and Genesee, Ha!). I moved permanently down with my old man in 1980. My first board was a 7’0 Matrix. Shaped by Bill Maynard. “Get your balls in the pocket and get on a stick by Matrix”, Lol! Spent many days at the Comber and Pennant while he tied one on with the Ombac crew. When was able to drive, Blacks was my go to spot. Loved O-side and Spitters too (Spitters is fucking insane). Had a crew from Coronado that I hung with a lot. Those guys would fucking charge. Coronado can get insane on the right swell. Although on a big South loved charging Birdrock. Many an epic session there for sure. Got into a few altercations but it was worth it. TBH, never thought Wind N Sea was that good of a wave for the stress it caused. I’d surf little point or rock pile (when it broke) more than Wind N. The shoe on a big south is on a different level. Can get downright hairball. Love the thread boys!

The first time I got truly barreled and made it out was on that board, north side of Crystal pier on a strong overhead day with minimal guys in the water. Loved that Matrix. I had a 6'10" board shaped in 1979 by Tony Staples out of Clairemont Surf Shop, rode it for years, and in the late 80's I bought a new PDS (also Staples) 7' egg that I ride to this day. I was also an amateur photog and shot a lot of the barrel madness at Big Rock (just south of Windan). Lots of kneeriders at the Lobster Lounge back then... I think there were these fearless brothers named Huffman..? I seem to recall one of them smashing his knees up bad on the rock reef there. Amazing watching the water suck back off the reef to where you could see the elephant grass laying on the water surface. Guys would get barreled at Big Rock and it almost looked like the wave sat still for a moment with the barrel spinning. Good times.
I've surfed San Diego since the early 90's. This problem has always existed. Some breaks are actually patrolled by locals. If they don't know you they will fight you and not allow you to surf "their" waves.
Those days are gone. With the internet, you try and stop someone and get into a fight, you'll catch a charge. The most I've seen is them snaking or dropping in on your and giving you the stink eye. Which is funny, I was born in SD and alot of these "locals" weren't even born here, not that I care though, the concept of being a local doesn't entitle me to waves over the next guy.
In the '80s I always avoided Wind&Sea because of the attitude. I remember being out there once and a guy couldn't stop talking shit about my friend's leash because it was pink. Just another break patrolled by assholes.

If I go up to the front of the line without waiting my turn, it's usually an adult who will show me the right way of getting in line. Teachable moment but was drowned out by entitled man babies... When I was 16 the locals, older heads in their 20s, were dicks to us. We loved the beach and the water but was always met with some aggression, depending on what beach you were at.

Surfing Karen's is all they are. I was just down surfing in Puerto Escondido Mexico where I have been surfing on and off the last decade. Had a few local surfing Karens start talking shit in the water. I just stepped to them on shore for a fight. They didn't want none. And it did help that I was good friends with a few of the locals also. Just a few of them I didn't know had to recognize real quick. Always keep your head up.
With 8 billion humans on the planet (and growing) more and more are surfing with no increase in the number of surf breaks/venues. A crowded day for me back in the 70’s was 5-7 dudes in one area. Now you’ll see hundreds in clusters all clamoring for any surf-able wave Wind n Sea is definitely one of the more territorial breaks.
Some spots are localized, like Wind n Sea and if youre not a local you probably won't have a good time surfing there.I live on Big Island Hawaii and its not too bad.But go to some spots in Kauai and see what happens.Youll be immediately confronted and if youre not smart enough to retreat you will have problems.I dont care how patient you are, respectful nor how good you surf, there are some spots where locals rule.
Eticate is so missing in young people learning how to surf nowadays, that and they don't seem to care much about learning about the currents, rip currents underwater obstacles, etc.. And, it goes hand in hand with respect. What you going to do if you get in a serious accident out in the water - who's going to save you? Surely not the guys/gals, that you've been cutting off, jumping in the waves not back in the critical part of the curl either. Let me tell you as a Diver and all around Water-man - accidents are just that, and you never know when they will occur. I've saved numberr of lives surfing and I've saved lives diving. There's so much to learn about surfing, that translates to life's lessons. Not catching every wave that you could, means nothing.
Plenty of waves boys, learn the rules, and if you see someone who clearly doesn’t know the rules, let them know, respectfully of course, then if they insist on being a douche, jiu- jitsu they ass. No need for punches. If you aren’t having fun, something is very wrong.
Surfable waves are generated on the sea-floor just off-the beach: create sea-floor features that wedge waves into shapes to benefit surfing, is just a matter of lowering sections of concrete-wall out under the water near shore, the waves present will buckle up-ward almost the height of the wall and progress with that influenced shape, literally groomed for surfing: a section of ten-foot-wall thirty-feet-wide will make a wave of those dimensions form directly above it.
Imagine liking the same thing as other people, like say maybe bird watching, and then another guy starts to fight with you because there is some bird that he saw first and he wants to be the only one to look at it. I’ve surfed all throughout California (alone) and in many places throughout the world. Stay out of people’s way when you don’t have the right of way. If a group of twenty kids approach you and says “you don’t look like you’re from around here”. Be quiet or be prepared to deal with 20 kids
My fam has been in SD and surfing for 4 generations.. doesn't mean I'm entitled to anything in the ocean. I surf all over the place and the so called locals are always trash bags. It seems as if the only form of status they have in their lives is surfing the same break everyday. My great uncle in Harvey Porter and he grew up surfing with skip frye.. my mom still has one of his first shaped boards.. doesn't mean any one in my family is entitled to shit though.. "locals" are funny 🤣
Windansea has always been a "locals only" type break, so the comments from that local guy are basically wishful deflections, not rooted in reality. If you were an outsider and parked your car there, there was a high probability it would get vandalized. Threats were commonplace and despite there being mostly level headed surfers there, it only takes a few thugs hungry to run the show to spoil it for everyone. And they were always present at Windansea. Same at New Break at the Cliffs and countless other highly coveted "locals only" breaks in SD.

My friend grabbed a guy and sat on his shoulders for a long time. Back in mid 90s. The guy was yelling at him for dropping in. He said he'd sit on his shoulders and hold him under if he didn't stop disturbing him. That's exactly what he did. It was shocking to see.

Etiquette has been around since the beginning of surfing, as a young grom in the 70’s I would never have paddled to any main peak but picked up scraps. People paddle out and disrespect the line up, hog waves, shoulder hop or drop in on you or sit incorrectly in the line up. He used a great example in discussing cutting in line.

I was an outsider and never once had a problem, always surfed alone from Sunset cliffs to Cardiff. OB pier was the closest to the casa so mainly grovelled there or Sunset cliffs on weekdays but on weekends Id hit the other spots to check them out. Sean Styles and 91X always gave epic surf reports. Might have been a different story and an issue paddling out to the lineup with your whole posse with you or if you was a kook just getting in everyone elses way. Only place I seen fistacuffs was OB pier.

In the 60's and 70's, the cops were at The Lot regularly dealing with fights and near riots. It was a badge of honor amongst the locals to have a reputation for "crowd control" during the packed summer party days... the crew ensured that kooks and tourists who trashed the area "show more respect." Now... the only locals left who can afford to live there beg the cops to protect them against the outside marauders. Albert is ashamed.
at least the police are interested in public safety and patrolling violence. In my locality the lanada bay boys have sent. people to the hospital, but more commonly will seriously vandalize your car .They boast about being trust fund babies where they can easily afford to go to court for physical violence and any extended legal processes, while you can't spare the time off from work or the money . The police quietly support them as an institution and they are so well established they have their own wikipedia page.
There isnt that many surfers on the Tx Gulf. It's more like " OMG There is a surfer ou there." Can we get a photo with you and your surfboard. That has always been my experience surfing.
It's real simple: breaks are territorial and W&S is as territorial as they come. If you don't feel like dealing with it, go pick off a shoulder at the edge of the pack or go find a more laid back break.

Well there is something to it - and you've missed out on about 50 years of surfing experience. Show respect, just like you should to elders - and you'll be amassed and how people will help you out.
Being in the lineup especially at crowded breaks needs order, I've taken place in brawls when certain surfers show up and think they are now going to choose and take the best set waves and snake everyone by trying that tough guy chit, it usually ended up the majority of the lineup against that 1 or 2 who try and dominate, I started surfing my local breaks at 6 years old now 34 years later I still see it happening and it's childish, the best surfer are those having the most fun which is what it's all about, sure some kooks will always be there but order must be held especially if you're not a local, it's easy to weed out the kooks from seasoned riders, there's always enough waves for everyone and if you snake someone especially on purpose be prepared
im a kook, i love surfing, have loved it since i was a kid, but ive spent most of my life away from surf spots (cities etc)... when i was learning in Bali recently i was going for most waves but i was away from the experienced surfers launch area, by about 10 meters of so to the side, because i realized i can go for most waves because i didnt want to line up next to the break where they are, plus once theyve launched and im launching at same time, a good surfer can easily go around a kook. A kook cant wait in the water for hours just for a try at 1-2 waves. Basicly if everyone just stops with the ego shit and tries to share/get a long it works well, bali being a good example.
The waiting in line at Costco example is spot on. Intermediate or advanced, wait your turn and don’t paddle around everyone. These dorks wouldn’t do this at a store. For some reason they think they are tougher in the water.
The thing is, usually waves can handle it, eg several rides, as long as they're different skill levels, a noob and a good surfer CAN EASILY share a wave

I had a 6'10" board shaped in 1979 by Tony Staples out of Clairemont Surf Shop, rode it for years, and in the late 80's I bought a new PDS (also Staples) 7' egg that I ride to this day. I was also an amateur photog and shot a lot of the barrel madness at Big Rock (just south of Windan). Lots of kneeriders at the Lobster Lounge back then... I think there were these fearless brothers named Huffman..? I seem to recall one of them smashing his knees up bad on the rock reef there. Amazing watching the water suck back off the reef to where you could see the elephant grass laying on the water surface. Guys would get barreled at Big Rock and it almost looked like the wave sat still for a moment with the barrel spinning. Good times.
The best is in FL when you have 60 year old men yelling at 16 year old kids over 1 foot garbage.

I've surfed San Diego since the early 90's. This problem has always existed. Some breaks are actually patrolled by locals. If they don't know you they will fight you and not allow you to surf "their" waves.
Those days are gone. With the internet, you try and stop someone and get into a fight, you'll catch a charge. The most I've seen is them snaking or dropping in on your and giving you the stink eye. Which is funny, I was born in SD and alot of these "locals" weren't even born here, not that I care though, the concept of being a local doesn't entitle me to waves over the next guy.
In the '80s I always avoided Wind&Sea because of the attitude. I remember being out there once and a guy couldn't stop talking shit about my friend's leash because it was pink. Just another break patrolled by assholes.

When I was 16 the locals, older heads in their 20s, were dicks to us. We loved the beach and the water but was always met with some aggression, depending on what beach you were at.

Surfing Karen's is all they are. I was just down surfing in Puerto Escondido Mexico where I have been surfing on and off the last decade. Had a few local surfing Karens start talking shit in the water. I just stepped to them on shore for a fight. They didn't want none. And it did help that I was good friends with a few of the locals also. Just a few of them I didn't know had to recognize real quick. Always keep your head up.

A crowded day for me back in the 70’s was 5-7 dudes in one area. Now you’ll see hundreds in clusters all clamoring for any surf-able wave

Some spots are localized, like Wind n Sea and if youre not a local you probably won't have a good time surfing there.I live on Big Island Hawaii and its not too bad.But go to some spots in Kauai and see what happens.Youll be immediately confronted and if youre not smart enough to retreat you will have problems.I dont care how patient you are, respectful nor how good you surf, there are some spots where locals rule.

Eticate is so missing in young people learning how to surf nowadays, that and they don't seem to care much about learning about the currents, rip currents underwater obstacles, etc.. And, it goes hand in hand with respect. What you going to do if you get in a serious accident out in the water - who's going to save you? Surely not the guys/gals, that you've been cutting off, jumping in the waves not back in the critical part of the curl either. Let me tell you as a Diver and all around Water-man - accidents are just that, and you never know when they will occur. I've saved numberr of lives surfing and I've saved lives diving. There's so much to learn about surfing, that translates to life's lessons. Not catching every wave that you could, means nothing.
BTW not saving someone from drowning because they were rude would be a regret to carry to your own grave even if you lived to be 100.

Surfable waves are generated on the sea-floor just off-the beach: create sea-floor features that wedge waves into shapes to benefit surfing, is just a matter of lowering sections of concrete-wall out under the water near shore, the waves present will buckle up-ward almost the height of the wall and progress with that influenced shape, literally groomed for surfing: a section of ten-foot-wall thirty-feet-wide will make a wave of those dimensions form directly above it.

My fam has been in SD and surfing for 4 generations.. doesn't mean I'm entitled to anything in the ocean. I surf all over the place and the so called locals are always trash bags. It seems as if the only form of status they have in their lives is surfing the same break everyday. My great uncle in Harvey Porter and he grew up surfing with skip frye.. my mom still has one of his first shaped boards.. doesn't mean any one in my family is entitled to shit though.. Windansea has always been a "locals only" type break, so the comments from that local guy are basically wishful deflections, not rooted in reality. If you were an outsider and parked your car there, there was a high probability it would get vandalized. Threats were commonplace and despite there being mostly level headed surfers there, it only takes a few thugs hungry to run the show to spoil it for everyone. And they were always present at Windansea. Same at New Break at the Cliffs and countless other highly coveted "locals only" breaks in SD.
Don't forget.. it's against the law to wear a leash.. bunch of clowns out there 😂

My friend grabbed a guy and sat on his shoulders for a long time. Back in mid 90s. The guy was yelling at him for dropping in. He said he'd sit on his shoulders and hold him under if he didn't stop disturbing him. That's exactly what he did. It was shocking to see.

This is no different anywhere, show respect, wait your turn. Etiquette has been around since the beginning of surfing, as a young grom in the 70’s I would never have paddled to any main peak but picked up scraps. People paddle out and disrespect the line up, hog waves, shoulder hop or drop in on you or sit incorrectly in the line up. He used a great example in discussing cutting in line.

If u sit there quietly and wait ur turn ur viewed as mean mugging, pouting. It’s quite comical! What’s wrong with everyone getting a wave before u and then entering the line up? That’s how it is in every other sport! I know surfers don’t want the sport to grow or continue to grow cause that just adds more pressure to the lineup. But there has got to be some common ground here. Not everybody live on the coast! Some of us have to drive an hour or 4 to find some waves!

I was an outsider and never once had a problem, always surfed alone from Sunset cliffs to Cardiff. OB pier was the closest to the casa so mainly grovelled there or Sunset cliffs on weekdays but on weekends Id hit the other spots to check them out. Sean Styles and 91X always gave epic surf reports. Might have been a different story and an issue paddling out to the lineup with your whole posse with you or if you was a kook just getting in everyone elses way. Only place I seen fistacuffs was OB pier.

In the 60's and 70's, the cops were at The Lot regularly dealing with fights and near riots. It was a badge of honor amongst the locals to have a reputation for "crowd control" during the packed summer party days... the crew ensured that kooks and tourists who trashed the area "show more respect."

at least the police are interested in public safety and patrolling violence. In my locality the lanada bay boys have sent. people to the hospital, but more commonly will seriously vandalize your car .They boast about being trust fund babies where they can easily afford to go to court for physical violence and any extended legal processes, while you can't spare the time off from work or the money . The police quietly support them as an institution and they are so well established they have their own wikipedia page.

Being in the lineup especially at crowded breaks needs order, I've taken place in brawls when certain surfers show up and think they are now going to choose and take the best set waves and snake everyone by trying that tough guy chit, it usually ended up the majority of the lineup against that 1 or 2 who try and dominate, I started surfing my local breaks at 6 years old now 34 years later I still see it happening and it's childish, the best surfer are those having the most fun which is what it's all about, sure some kooks will always be there but order must be held especially if you're not a local, it's easy to weed out the kooks from seasoned riders, there's always enough waves for everyone and if you snake someone especially on purpose be prepared
im a kook, i love surfing, have loved it since i was a kid, but ive spent most of my life away from surf spots (cities etc)... when i was learning in Bali recently i was going for most waves but i was away from the experienced surfers launch area, by about 10 meters of so to the side, because i realized i can go for most waves because i didnt want to line up next to the break where they are, plus once theyve launched and im launching at same time, a good surfer can easily go around a kook. A kook cant wait in the water for hours just for a try at 1-2 waves. Basicly if everyone just stops with the ego shit and tries to share/get a long it works well, bali being a good example.
The waiting in line at Costco example is spot on. Intermediate or advanced, wait your turn and don’t paddle around everyone. These dorks wouldn’t do this at a store. For some reason they think they are tougher in the water.
The thing is, usually waves can handle it, eg several rides, as long as they're different skill levels, a noob and a good surfer CAN EASILY share a wave
