I can see it eorking if you have a bigger stronger healtyer calf going out of the shed. I wonder if they drink more on colder days. Having a data logger on shed temperature and comparing that to milk intake would be interesting
Go with Milk Guard rather than milk shake. Better protection against scour and works better with powder. We using it here ourselves. Very happy with it.
We have an old ad lib feeder feed 70 calves on it our experience they would be 50 to 80kg ahead of the ones on new feeder, feeding 3 times a day at a year old
Our feeder is set to 12ltrs max on a 22g Protein powder costing £37 a bag. Calves do fantastic and well worth the extra milk. Growth rates are very much noticeable. Too many people & sales hype their milk up & it’s a load of nonsense. As long as the powder doesn’t fall to the bottom of a bucket after 5mins then the powder is fine for the feeder.
@mikeysky8917 There is indeed, and for years, I was feeding 12.5 % as suggested by the rep, but on advice from independent nutritionists, he recommends 15%.
I think it’s worth it even if u break even because you’ll have stronger fitter calves that will thrive and be less sick than poorly calves surely it makes more sense even with no extra profit.
Cracking vid as usual folks love all thats going on at the moment but im ready for the longer days to start again it seams to of been a longer winter here for me... stay safe 🏴
Would ye rare more autumn calves in the future would it not leave life a bit easier to be at calves in October November time and have them weaned and strong going out to grass in spring and free up more time for slurry and field work
I would kinda reckon you Would need to keep the power Into the calves all the way through To finishing to get the full benefit Of the add lib system! ...it will very Interesting to see the final results.. 🐮🐮🐮🐮🐮
Don’t forget to take reduction of mortality and medicine use in to your calculations as a dead calf after feeding it for weeks is more expensive than a little extra milk powder
i don't think you'll get the results you are after, the ad lib feeding will certainly help the calf initially, but that's the point, gets them off to a great start and ready for heavy feeding afterwards, you saw the german system, bulls at 15-18months killing at 400kgs, those are healthy animals pushed as hard as they can go from day dot. you're system you'll lose the gain when you slow them down again in your grass based system and average it over 24-30months.
On my feeder, I do build calves up to 6 litres a day of a top quality 23% protein powder at 15% power and calves flying even some not fit to finish it all.
Be wary of reducing proteins in milk replacer all the same Phil. From my time in college & being involved in milk processing industry, which supplies the milk powder the general consensus is that 22%+ is a minimum requirement for really pushing on a calf. My own belief is that you'll see the benefit of the extra protein throughout the life of the animal, not always in that initial daily weight gain. More protein= better thrive aswell as growth and better health. I think your new milk powder should serve you well but don't keep dropping!!
Add lib definitely better to get them going early. I’ve always found higher fat milk the better option for calves too rather than protein. Will you keep the ad lib calves separate post weaning? Like have them on a ad lib meal first summer too? I’d be interested to see if you can get the ad lib calves finished quicker, I’d say there would be good profit in that too? Calves looking great 👍👍 have you noticed an improvement with the ventilation changes you made??
Probably won’t keep them separated as I want them spread out evenly with the other batches to see how they preform in comparison to the other calves that weren’t on ad lib to see whether we should be feeding everything as lib
Love ur channel Phil, great having such a beautiful wife by ur side, Oh !! Phil a wee word in ur ear... don't forget please and thank you when speaking to that hard working lady, don't cost nothing young man.
Your home blend is too rich or too easily divisible. The smarter calves are sorting out the barley and eating too much of it. It’s causing a mild acidosis which is causing their scour. Nothing to do with bird droppings in the meal. I know it’s desirable/ cheap to try and create your own ration but it’s a false economy.
Need relaxation with our favourite farmers on a SUNDAY evening.Happy Mammy’s day to all Mammy’s .Love watching 👀 all the calves so beautiful and soothing to watch.🤩🤩
Isn't meal not cheaper than milk powder? It will be interesting to see ur results, but be sceptical that any gain made now will be lost by 24 months old. As all you are doing is putting on puppy fat as calves and not mussel when it matters.
How much is your homemade ration costing? Mill raion is expensive nearly 15 euro for a 18 per cent protein. Would you consider meal throughout the summer at grass msybe 3 to 4 kgs per hd/ day.

Great stuff is the Milkguard. Only product that works when rearing calves.
@@spu5990whole milk turned into yogurt is the only thing that works for calves.

Hi Phil, looks like it's going well always enjoy the calve videos best of luck with everything.
Best of luck with your calves ad-lib is interesting too see what the difference is will it end pot belly calves used too tear a few calves on buckets
The calves on a limited amount of milk e.g 7 litres a day are easier weaned as the appetite tends to be better,

How many grams of power per litre you you feed
@@0487Jm 150g. There are milk replacers out there that only require 130g

The milk shake is fantastic stuff it will give them scour tho u have to start very small with it it’s then go up the the right amount
Great video Phil & Liv. Good luck with the calves. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Your calfs are so nice
I think it’s worth it even if u break even because you’ll have stronger fitter calves that will thrive and be less sick than poorly calves surely it makes more sense even with no extra profit.

Just a thought Phil could you put the dryer in the hay shed where that big tank is for next year.
Good shout there actually if say. But of rooting involved but might be worth it
I would kinda reckon you
Would need to keep the power
Into the calves all the way through
To finishing to get the full benefit
Of the add lib system! ...it will very
Interesting to see the final results..

Best of luck with all the calves 👍👍👍
Milkshake is one of the best things you can use, well worth the money

The German system is with a better quantity calf not the poor end calf of the chain
We have our calves feeding ad-lib off a liscarroll feeder ,calves got on great
Are you feeding whole milk or replacer?
The Best of luck with your new calf farmer Phil

Lovely batch of calves Phil fair dues
Hopefully the Adlib or liv?
add lib is great mighty big calves but very costly
Hope your calfs do well for you and liv

Good stuff
Yeah, reckon the protein is important. If you think of weight lifters need it to build muscle
In other words when you think there are fit leave them for another 3 weeks before you send to factory
Alot work.with calfs look good liv get sorted
Well done folks
Why dont u try topstart milk replacer 24 percent protein 48 euro a bag in centenary all milk protein
Hi Phil, would you be interested in a Toyota land cruiser commercial.

Oh my god would ya stop.... Phil talks with great gratitude to Liv.... don't be having a go for no need
@PReilly-xl5wk
Totally agree with you I was just whispering to Phil who's a very very nice young man.
Some of them new calves looks like reindeer 😂😂
That’s an insult to reindeer 😂😂😂

I know it’s desirable/ cheap to try and create your own ration but it’s a false economy.
The scour has cleared and only affected one herd so it must’ve been the transition from there to here
Why do you buy them chape runts? They’ll cost as much to feed as decent calves.
But make just as much as a decent calf when you take into consideration the purchase cost
Calf jackets welcome to married life
😂
Best luck calfs hope go good ye
I'd imagine they might be harder weaned when on the ab lib system
I’d like to think not as the feeder will take them down gradually
Liv top calf rearer👍
How's livs piggery going
What’s the name of the new milk replacer your using?
If you dont try will never find out
Very interesting as always .👍🤠
is that feeder unit expensive

How can you be sure that the AD LIB worked. It could be almost anything that made so small of weight gain over 18 months.
Weights at housing will be the 1st indicator if it’s working or not also weighing them going out will help
Ad Lib Phil 😀
Are you not going to be feeding liffey mills calf 18 this year
Waist of time and milk powder
Based on experience ?
Yes
