- Can a hotel really cater to all guests-whether you're on crutches or not?
After breaking my foot, I checked into this Holiday Inn Express in Bangkok to find out.
In this review, I explore how 'accessible friendly' this hotel truly is, from the room layout to the facilities, while also highlighting why it could be a great choice for ALL travellers.
Whether you’re mobility-challenged or simply seeking comfort and convenience in Bangkok, this video has you covered.
Watch now to see if the Holiday Inn Express Accessible Rooms, really do deliver on their promise.
Hi BC great to see you back on your feet and taking a “break” in going that extra mile to highlight the difficulties and challenges faced from a disability or minor accident. Great review. We don’t know how lucky mobility is till we need the help and service of people like these places provide 🙏
Thanks for your good wishes, Pete. You nailed it there. We take so many things for granted until something goes wrong. Only then is it clear how lucky we are and how challenging life can be for people with disabilities. I'll certainly be even more considerate in the future!
Just to remind you BC, I told the Stanna Stairlift engineer to come and install at your place on Monday at 11:00am.
If that’s a problem press the big red button on the lanyard that I gave you and speak to the nurse.
Thanks, Phil. You're all heart! I remember my aunt had a stanna stairlift in her home. As a kid, I thought it was the pinnacle of modern engineering. Well, it probably was, given that she had a spiral staircase.
Stanna is an old British family company. Been in existence longer than West Brom. And they've reached more heights than the baggies as well!

G'day BC mate , great to see a video from you again. That hotel looked like just the shot for people with mobility issues. Always happy to see "what's in the fridge" make an appearance in your video. The bells palmy symptom has seemed to have calmed down a bit by the looks ? Take care mate , regards SG and crew 👍🏼🍻🇦🇺
Hi SG and team! I was pleased with the hotel, and it felt good to be on the road again! Hopefully, someone with restricted mobility will see it and find it useful. Alternatively, I'd go again when I'm fit because I liked their customer service! Couldn't miss out on a Whats in the fridge! The Bell's Palsy is definitely getting better, although using a filter in the edit also helps! The fact that my face was a bit wonky to begin with now becomes an unexpected bonus! 😃 All the best, mate! Cheers for the support! 👍
Great vid mate.
I'm not disabled, however; this vid shows the genuine care and hospitality of the lovely Thai people.
Many thanks! I've always made a point on commenting on how Accessible the hotels are that I review. But it's quite different when you actually need help. And the service here was really caring. Also when I've been out and about with the crutches. Thai people are so helpful! 🇹🇭
good stuff. must remember this for next time I visit Bangkok on crutches. great to see your getting out and about.
Cheers, BB. All those times I checked if hotels were "accessibility friendly." Didn't imagine I'd need it. But you never know! I'll be checking even more carefully in the future! Meanwhile, it was nice to get a change of scenery. Especially as there was no traffic in Bangkok over the New Year period. 👍
Good to see, you having a break. With the break.
It was quite a trip, I must say! :-)
I was just about to make poached eggs on toast then I saw this hold the front page !!!BC is back like the terminator 😉. Great to see you out and about BC. The larger room is a bonus and that bathroom is very handy . The staff were so helpful . It was a great idea to show how accessible the hotel is . Well done BC and 100% the ladies will tell you how handsome man you are !!!!!!!!! . Take care and look after yourself
Hey, Jimmy! I feel greatly honoured that you put the poached eggs on toast on hold for my video! I'm a scrambled egg man myself, but couldn't find any at this hotel. Other than that it was great! I was bored sitting at home so I needed to get out and about. You can't keep a good man down. And you can't keep me down, either! Thanks, again Jimmy!
A sunny morning 22c at my 5star hotel One&Only Cape Town 4 the nxt few months again 😭😭miss my Asia sorry to hear about ur uplifting health events but keep moving&great vlog fella.
That sounds pretty good to me. 22 degrees and a 5-star hotel I could put up with that for a few months! Asia is hard to beat, but I've never been to Cape Town. Cheers for the positive feedback on the vlog! 👍
Looks nice. Best wishes with your recovery.
Yes, I liked it a lot. And thanks for your good wishes. Appreciate it.
Well that's a hotel review... with a different perspective, and it's very interesting.
I have to admit I never think if disabled people when I review hotels, only warning elderly people if there are too many stairs...
Who knows? Maybe that's an interesting niche 😁
Thanks, Alain. We'd probably be surprised how many people actually need specially designed rooms. The mere fact that holiday inn has a number of rooms of this type suggests there's demand. In fact, without using Holiday Inn, I found it quite difficult to book a room. another aspect of how travelling can be much more difficult for wheelchair dependent travellers or anyone with limited mobility. Hopefully, someone who needs it finds the video useful! ♿️
Thank's B.C It is important to accommodate everyone at good Hotels.
I am randomly limping about due to Gout. No matter how well I eat or don't drink...alcohol.
I will remember that hotel.
Sorry to hear that, PFI. I know it's obvious, but the last few weeks has shown me how easy it is to take good health for granted. We need to treasure the days when we feel fit! But if not, then hotels like this are ideal. I'm sure they train the staff well because they were all very caring and helpful! I'll be back there in the future!
I think that second pillow should have had "rock hard" written on it!...You wouldn't want your toes exposed to the elements like that here right now... .Not the most graceful mounting of an exercise machine I've ever seen lol. Entertaining review as usual BC..
Thanks, Mark. I was going to make a puerile joke about the pillow being the only rock hard thing I've had in my bed for a long while. Luckily, this channel is above all that 😉 I was looking at the crowds watching the footie yesterday, they were dressed as if going on a polar expedition. I don't miss that weather! I'm not the most graceful athlete at the best of times, but that was definitely a new low for me! 💪 😃
@@balloonchaser it was bloomin cold down the Villa yesterday, i`m only just beginning to thaw out 😁UTV
@changnoi3637 It looked freezing from the pictures, at least until Barkley and Bailey warmed it up a bit! UTV
I suppose the only thing they could consider is having the shower head positioned at a lower level by default on arrival. 7ft high is ok for a lot of people but I guess it would be difficult for those in a chair to reach to reposition. Thanks for the review.
Thanks, Reggie. You're right, shower head lower would be better for anyone using it seated or with their knee on the bench. Overall, though, I found the bathroom really practical. I felt much more stable than in my own bathroom, that's for sure! Cheers, mate!
Will be very interested in seeing how you manage getting about pattaya with crutches. like going to soi bekaho for a drink or night out. Been wondering on this question
Thanks, mate! I think it's quite difficult. Obviously, I've seen people whizzing around in wheelchairs and all sorts of motorised 3-wheelers. Hats off to them, they make it look easy, but I'm not sure I'd fancy it. On crutches, I rely on taxis to take me door to door. I wouldn't want to walk far, that's for sure! 👍
@@balloonchaser Of course. i ask because my spine is damaged and i fear what will happen. i just want to see what its like getting from a bar to a restraunt a bit up the street not a hike once in bekaho or lk or something ect.
@dantae666 Sorry to hear about your spine. I haven't really been out on the crutches yet. But, I'm back at the hospital tomorrow, so I'll find out what I'm supposed to do (or not do) next. I'll certainly report back if I do walk around outside. 👍
🇹🇭 Hotels are worldclass carrying to people who need extra attention. The Hotel didnd look as good as the Holiday in Express in Pattaya. A bit dated..?
Thanks, Anders. To be honest, I thought it was pretty much on par with the Holiday Inn Express in Pattaya. For me, they are all very similar. Both of them are good for the money 👍
Hard to believe you did a hotel review with a broken foot that will heal in a couple of weeks!! I am one of those horrible people who objects to superior service for disabled people. Why should able bodied customers not be able to check in from the sofa? Why should everyone pay extra so that businesses can equip themselves to cater for disabled guests with all the additional space needs and special bathrooms, ramps etc? I understand that disabled people want access to various facilities, but they want other people to subsidize that access. This is supposed to be fair in some way I fail to grasp.
I agree. You are one of those horrible people.
Interesting perspective, David. There's lots of facilities I never use in hotels, but it's never crossed my mind that I'm in any way subsidising them. I book into a hotel and choose which of the available facilities I need.
I'm not sure that "superior" is the correct description of the service people with mobility issues receive. I'm sure they'd love to be able to stand in a line at reception if it meant they were fitter. It's a case of the staff having a bit of compassion and realising things that are easy for "able bodied" people, can be challenging at times for others. I'm sure if really needed to sit on the sofa they'd do it for you.
And another thing, it's not the customers who decide what price the room is. That falls solely on the hotel. I've never heard anyone say they want their necessary facilities subsidised by other customers. I'd have happily paid a 'premium'.
I went to a hotel when I needed a change of scenery. I could have waited a couple of weeks, but given the specialist told me I won't be walking normally for 3 months, I thought it a useful exercise to check out what it's like, especially for those that have to live with restricted mobility for their whole lives. Anyway, thanks as always for your comment!
@@balloonchaser It is unfortunately a legal requirement for businesses to provide facilities for the disabled. They simply pass the costs incurred in provision of these on to all customers via price increases. That is how it works. Therefore, is is accurate to say that regular customers are subsidizing disabled customers use of the hotel and the same applies to the price you pay in the supermarket when you buy groceries and the place has a ramp and disabled toilets. Nobody is asked to pay more or given the option. In most places it would be illegal to do so. This stuff is always presented as a pure benefit - "we should have more services for xxxx group" and never as a cost. The costs are hidden and ignored. Naturally, most people think that XXX group deserves a little help, but if they were truly aware of the fact that they themselves were footing the bill, that may change.
I am harsh. I admit it and I care not. I dislike paying for other people and this extends to non-commercial service provision such as state health care or education. Why should I pay for other people's offspring to be educated? The hotel thing irritates me far less than the situation with planes. Many planes will board families with children and disabled people as a priority. You have no idea how infuriating I find that.
Life isn't fair, as being disabled isn't either.......rather like you having to pay the same for less isn't I guess...........
