Apni Maati - An Earthy Tribute to Mother India
You can be rest assured that when this magnificent trio of Shantanu Moitra, Shreya Ghoshal and Swanand Kirkire get together, something magical comes out. We have seen it with Piyu Bole (Parineeta), Tu (Bobby Jasoos) and now with Apni Maati. I think this great motherland couldn't get a better, befitting tribute. Thanks to all three of you for giving us Apni Maati on the occasion of our Independence Day as we reinforce our belongingness to this great nation, celebrate her diversity and wish for her prosperity.
I feel this song beautifully concocts the three Ms: Metaphors (Swanand), Melody (Shantanu) and Mood (Shreya) to make this masterpiece and all three play an equal role in producing this. Let's dissect this a little more.
I have always been a fan of Swanand ji's lyrics - their is that 'mitti di khusboo' that naturally comes out of his writing and this one's is no different. What he does so beautifully in this composition is personify our motherland with relatable metaphors (like jawaan, kisaan, sagar, sawan, kaarigar etc.) in a way making us relate to the importance of our motherland and finally ending with proclaiming the deep love each one of us have to our maati. (Tere Ishq Main Doobe Hain Hum). Just beautiful.
Coming to the melody - Shantanu does what he does best - keep the melody simple and builds a pleasant arrangement to invoke the feeling of patriotism with the right choice of instruments and fusion of raags.
The composition is primarily on major scale (D Major), however there are places where it uses certain off-notes beautifully - like it brings elements of 'Khamaaj Raag' with the use of 'komal ni' during the sargam and the antara at two places (Teri Bajuon main at 01:38 and Tere Zehen Ka at 01:44) which I found very beautiful. Also at 02:06 the melody beautifully transitions to 'Vande Mataram' which brings elements of 'Des Raag' for a short time, but just enough to give you goosebumps - this was so very masterly from Shantanu da.
Arrangement wise this song is based primarily on the piano with a variety of melodic and percussion instruments to ornate it. I loved the way Shantanu da brings in one instrument at a time to build the arrangement. First a set of keys on the bass notes, then the piano playing chords/arpeggio and finally base-line and strings come in at 00:32 and fill the air beautifully. I love the way the chords and strings change their mood (playing an off-note and minor chords perhaps?) at Apni Maati Hai at 00:55. Percussions come in only at the interlude before the antara with traditional Indian beats - mostly a Dafli like instrument. There is a hint of flute used at 02:03 to transition the melody to Des Raag. Overall loved the use of piano with the parallel melodies that Shantanu da brought in adding a different dimension to the listener. I think it is the arrangement that really takes the cake on this one. It defines and owns the overall feel of the composition.
Last but not the least the 'mood' - I sense the fact that the trio co-created this composition reflected in the way Shreya sang it and owned it completely. There was a feeling of that 'buland awaaz' which was very important to bring the patriotic feeling notwithstanding the usual sweetness that you associate with Shreya's voice. Overall vocals wise there weren't much harkats or technicalities involved (which is generally Shreya's forte), however the essence of the vocals was to retain the feel/mood of a patriotic number which Shreya did beautifully. There was a sargam at the interlude which fused well with the melody. Overall the tough part of the vocals I guess was to keep it extremely simple and subtle and Shreya did that masterfully.
Overall a composition that would get you hooked right in the first listening and then make you love it over 'dheemi-aanch', just like our love for this great nation.

I am a fan of Shreya Ghoshal since 2013, that's when she co-judged indian idol along with the very talented Vishal-Shekhar duo.
As a singer:
▪️She is an inspiration for almost every youngsters and upcoming indian singers.
▪️She does not need any instruction.
▪️She sings so well that you instantly fall in love with her voice and feel the positive vibes around you.
▪️She can sing in any language though she cannot speak all those languages.
▪️Till date she sang songs in almost all Indian language
As a person:
▪️She is very down to earth watch any interview of her's on UA-cam you can easily make out from the way she talks to interviewers. Even her father praised her for her strong character in a reality show.
▪️She loves her fans a lot and never disappoints them. She is quite Active on social media to interact with her fans directly. She is ever ready to go an extra mile to reach out to her fans and music lovers with her music.
▪️She is an animal lover and nature lover too. She loves her pet ' Sherlock Ghoshal' a lot.

▪️If Shreya Ghoshal is coming to your state please don't miss the opportunity of witnessing her live a concert. Her concerts are the best and pure music treat. She has really good sense of humor, she include her audiences in singing during the concert and you will never be disappointed for the money you paid for her concert. Her presentation style is commendable, she is quite aware of what the Audience is expecting from her.
As, I earlier mentioned she loves her fans a lot and never disappoints them. Here is one incident which happened in January 2016 in her concert at Grand, Hyderabad - she was ready to perform medley of evergreen songs and there was a senior person from the audience who went close to the stage requesting her to sing an old song and Shreya with due respect bent down to know what that person's request was in front of 15k+ of audience there. She sang few lines of that song ( though she was running short of time), She thanked the person for that request and mentioned that the requested song was one of her favorite songs too.
After that incident my respect for her increased by *12345.... times. She could have just turned down the request by saying something but no, she didn't do that.
Her concerts are only about pure music unlike some concerts where there is lot of skin show and fake talent.
I adore her a lot not only for her singing but also for her good Character :-)
