  • Watercolour is a magic medium, but did you know it can also be magnetic? Hematite Genuine from the Daniel Smith Primatek range is probably the best know magnetic watercolour, but that got me thinking about others with iron in them. Mars Black is made with Iron Oxide, so I decided to put them to the test side by side. I also checked out their granulation, wet in wet properties and all sorts of other things.Mars Black is a third the price of Hematite, so would it work as well or not?

Was about to drop ten dollars on hematite but I realized Pbk11 is the same as the Lunar Black I have already. I grabbed a magnet and put a few drops of water on the bit of lunar black I had in my dish already and those little iron bits just ran right eagerly toward the magnet when I hovered the magnet next to it. I bet all the lunar colors do this. I can't wait to use it in a painting! Also if you put the magnet on the tube of paint it will stick. None of my other colors do that.

Watercolor is indeed interesting and I really do appreciate your inquisitiveness and experiments. (Btw, I’d like to know more about your lovely floral in the background.)

The floral was an experiment using acrylic ink like watercolour, but on canvas. I layered it using masking, in the same way as this one ua-cam.com/video/uI-zeRdRv6k/v-deo.html

Hematite Genuine In Japan it is 1780 yen. about 10 pounds(GBP)
By the way, Turner 15ml is made in Japan, but it is not sold in Japan because it is an overseas export specification.

@@LizChadertonArt Japan's art supply stores are so famous and popular that Holbein always has a monopoly on the market. I have never seen Turner's watercolors. 24 colors of 5ml are sold online. Actually, it seems that there are 148 colors, but it is said that it is an overseas version. Instead, Turner is famous for acrylic paint.

I do enjoy your experiments. For those of a thrifty nature when playing Van Gogh do a 10ml Oxide black Pbk 11 for about £3,60 which I found okay. I look forward to where your curiosity leads you next.

Oh thank you! It was an experiment using acrylic inks on a watercolour canvas. It's a layering technique similar to this one: ua-cam.com/video/uI-zeRdRv6k/v-deo.html It's really hard to layer on canvas, so I thought using the inks might work.... it did!
