I’m 20 and started JWR Detailing, van insurance is ridiculous so decided to work out of my car (golf at the time, now a clubman S). Works great, got a box on top and can fit all the things I need. Now booked for a month so seems to work for me!!

I have only recently found your channel and as an enthusiastic amateur who started off with a sponge and chamois leather 45 years ago cleaning (destroying) my dad’a car, I can honestly say that I have learned so much from you. What sets you apart is your willingness to try anything and everything, be completely objective and to think about it all not just from the point of view of a professional but what would work for an amateur or someone starting out as a detailer. I have yet to watch all of your content but have not yet seen any vacuum cleaner reviews, have I missed that or are you planning to do this in the future?
I wish you every possible success and thanks for taking the time to share your skills and opinions with us.

I used to love washing and paint correcting mine and friends cars from an Alfa Romeo forum. I had decided to give it a go as a business but after having a few bouts of severe back pain, sadly was diagnosed with spinal stenosis.
I found it immensely calming to see cars transformed and the expression on the owners faces.

Keeping it simple is best. I run a setup out the back of my 2019 Mitsubishi Triton ute. 30L air compressor, vacuum, karcher high pressure, hose reels, chemical rack x12 bottles, 2 slider drawer systems, wash gear, polishing machine and microfiber tubs. I can get 99% of the work done with this setup without having to take anything else. Everything else stays on the garage shelves.
No one has even batted an eye for me not taking my own power or water either (Australia based).
The key is having a setup where it suits your style of detailing (maintenance / ceramic / heavy duty cleaning / full details) and spending the least amount of time mucking around finding and setting up / packing up equipment.

I've got a van for mobile valeting, with a generator and water tank and all of that, but went out to a few jobs with my personal car instead. The bare minimum fitted perfectly in the boot (I drive an estate car, so the longer boot helped).
To be honest, using a car instead of a van, sometimes feels better, as you don't have to go through the clutter just to use the necessary bits.

I use a rolling metal cart with 3 levels that has mesh for the bottoms. So I just take out all the critical stuff like hoses, extension cords, pressure washer, etc.. to set up and then load the cart up with the chemicals, towels and tools I expect to use. Basically the same thing you're doing with the boxes but a little easier to move around together and I toss used towels or things that may be dripping on the lower levels of the cart so they can kinda dry before going back in the bins at the end.

Great video Dave. It's honestly a really fair point about just doing it out of the car, because that's what I was looking at doing in a few months time when I come to start my own mobile valet. You can just use the customer's power and water if you are clear about it in advance. Yes, you may lose out on some people who expect you to use your own, but someone I spoke to recently said they're the sort of people that will give you all the grief anyways! Thanks for the video

    Brilliant info Dave.
Having a signed up van is great, but there are some striking disadvantages when starting out. Van insurance can be very expensive, and as you pointed out, a decent van will set you back a few grand. I know a top end detailer, and he spent 14 grand just having the back of his van kitted out !! Also, there's a lot of thieving gits out there, so emptying your car out each evening may save you the heart ache of finding all your stuff has been nicked, and even if you empty your van out, they will still rip your loading door open only to find an empty van.
    Nice one Dave

What do you do if you have a client who doesn’t have an outside water tap and you don’t have any water?

Move on to the next. The probably if that happening in most cases is slim from my own experience but for beginners who are just practicing at this stage they can be picky and just find other potential customers

Could you shed some light on your approach to managing your business operations, particularly the valeting/detailing aspect, while effectively maintaining a work-life balance with your family? It's truly remarkable how you consistently create engaging UA-cam content while successfully running your business. I'm curious, do you handle all these responsibilities independently?

Yes I would love to. If I'm honest it's not easy. It sometimes tears apart my family life. I work all the time all day and night. I do the school runs too. It's unbearable 😔

@@epicautomotivedetailing I have experienced this today myself, two cars mini valet inside full exterior valet including decom. then full wax on both cars. took me from 9am till 6pm, it is sad, I haven't seen my kids all day. and now I'm here putting my lad to sleep while working on my business... but the work does pay of as I just earned a weeks wage in a day.... :)
