Excellent review Rob, the hazel feather-stick being testament to the skill of the user - changing tactics to meet the strengths of the tool. If I had smaller hands, there would be little to dislike in the R2, but Falkniven do seem to cater for the smaller handed among us. Good to see the new site and that you can get out a bit, but keep your wits about you in these high winds. Cheers!
Your feather sticks are always impressive Rob, I practice at home making firestarters for my wood burner, I’m getting better but have a way to go by your standards! Favourite knife for it is a Falkniven F1X, I definitely have more luck with a convex grind.
Thank you for reviewing this knife. I was going back and forth between this and the F1 Pro which is about $70 more for the Elmax version where I live. I really wanted the Elmax version because I feel it is a superior steel to CoS. After seeing this video demonstrating that the R2 can still handle bigger jobs I decided to get it and I have been really impressed with it so far. My favorite aspect of this knife is that it is not too big and heavy to be worn around the neck which is great for hiking. I also like to pair it with my Victorinox Rangergrip because the saw on that is just long enough to saw branches up to 3” in diameter which can then be easily split with the R2. The saw is also much better at scraping a ferro rod. As you stated correctly, the one thing that the R2 doesn’t do well is food prep but the thin, flat blade of the Rangergrip is perfect for that so the two knives compliment one another extremely well.
Nice review. I bought my first proper knife last week, the Fallkniven Embla. I haven't tried it yet but I like seeing what some of the smaller knives can do.
The R2 is definitely a good knife and its size doesn't really cause a huge issue as it works well when paired with a saw. The Silky Pocketboy seems to suit it. Things might take a little longer, but just means planning time a little more.
Great video ,it works great hanging upside down around my neck, have used it every weekend for the past 5-6 weeks when driving snowmobile ,the lock on the x sheet feels very safe

The little guy wants to be S1 Pro when it grows up, lol. That is the first review of an R2 Scout I've seen. I think I would pocket carry it a leather sheath. I have a ZT folder in Elmax that performs well. Its on the forest floor somewhere. I lost it but I'm still hopeful I will find it one day. Your saw is a back up scraper/ ferro rod striker as well. Best price i found was $ 161.00 :)
Very well done video and good review. I would call this a 'just in case' knife or 'back up' (aka survival) knife depending on your activity. If I know I'm gonna carve feather sticks and traps (bushcraft) all day I bring a different knife with a larger more rounded handle. If I know I'm gonna do foodprep all day I bring a different knife probably a flat grind or a thin spine scandi. This knife has a short handle for my L/XL hands but I will manage. The slim, compact profile of knife and sheath, the lock so the knife will not come out in your luggage and the relatively light weight make it a great choice for a just in case or back up knife. The one you easily put in a cargo pocket or just throw in your daypack for a day hike. Throw in your big backpack on a thru hike just in case your SAK isn't enough. Take abroad if you plan to go out in nature there. You won't do that with a CS Trail Boss because it's to big and heavy so that will stay at home and is therefor not a 'survival' knife.
The R2 scout is probably more for someone hiking or doing survival than bushcraft work , the R2 needed a bit of tuning from straight out the box being brand new so wasn't ready to use, so whether thats a good or bad thing I don't know, but still a good little knife.
Brilliant video pal.. just shows what a small knife is capable of doing.. don't mind putting my hand over a few carrots as long as it bites through timber 🤙

There is always the temptation to think that blades smaller than 6 inches aren't going to cut the mustard, but as you always demonstrate there is generally a work around.....puukkos aren't exactly Rambo knives and historically they've done OK.
Seems to be able to strike a ferro rod well. It is not laminated though. Do you think it is the lamination that is the problem with most Fallkniven knives? I've never owned one but I've done some research and the steel they use for lamination is supposedly at the most 56 HRC(fallkniven hardening process might end up softer than that though), which is pretty soft. Although their "3G steel" uses a harder steel for its lamination so maybe those knives would do a better job. Don't know if you've ever tried any of their 3G knives?

I love my F1 (regular VG10) and i used to love my Enzo in Elmax (sold long time ago) Was thinking of the Cold Steel SRK which is similar money but think this one (with a desent leather or kydex sheath would maybe be better? Also, ddo you prefer to your H1?
I wish properly sharpened spines were the default on all outdoors knives. Don't really understand the reasoning behind not doing it although that one doesn't seem too bad. You have quite the Fallkniven collection now. You should bring them all out one day and have a Fallkniven party video.
I agree. A sharp spine is very useful. I think it’s for the thumb on the spine folks that want jimping. Notice nobody that uses their thumb on the spine makes good feathersticks though. I think it’s poor technique IMO. I prefer a hammer grip and a sharp spine.
Hi Rob, and great to see you've got a camp site again! I hope it's not too inconvenient getting there regularly. I have been meaning to ask you why you don't use a chain for a fire hanger, but always seem to get side-tracked. I know it's a bit heavy, but if you can lay your hands on some dirt cheap mattress chain this is also a good solution, and it's lighter. A couple of hooks and it's infinitely adjustable. Cheers!

i was told by an air force survival instructor, just use the blade to strike the ferro rod, although it might dull the edge slightly it wont cause any real damage as the ferro rods are soft. ... different mind set i guess, but in a survival situation everything else is secondary to getting a result. (nice wool smock you have there ... where is it from?)

Hello Mr. Evans, great video as usual. I was wondering if you noticed any micro chipping on the edge after use. I saw another video where the author found this problem and reported the steel to be on the brittle side.
I appreciate it is skills building but why are all UA-cam Bushcrafters obsessed with going straight from spark to feather stick? I was always taught that feather sticks were kindling, not tinder. If you are going to go down the route of using a Ferro rod which isn’t naturally occurring in nature why not use a bit of tinder too? Some cotton wool? Magnesium Powder? Wet Fire? Bio Ethanol? Birch bark scraping? BTW this is not a criticism, just an observation. Good video. Looks like a lovely little knife! 👍
It's the "what if" scenario in my case , I think that if you carry a ferrorod then it's a good idea to have the right knife and skills to create your own tinder if all the prepared tinder is unavailable for one reason or another.
Hi Rob, Thanks for the video. I also have one R2, and all the sheath in the r2 is more harder to remove the knife with one hand. So, i carefully removed the little metal part, tightened it slightly and put it back in, and it was perfect. Now is more easy to put on and out the knife from the sheath!!
Have you ever tested the strength of a knife with pounding it in a mid sized tree and then wiggling it and repeat that process in order to fell the tree?
I am in the process of replacing all my knives with just a F1 and A1 pair. After using various knives in the tropics as well as Europe I don't want any leather, wood or brass on a knife or its sheath. From now on only Zytel sheath and Thermorun or Kraton handles. My F1 stood up to the tropical climate far better than any other knife I ever owned.
Great review Rob. I have similar experience with the R2 and like it a lot. I use it as a neck knife; saw off the belt loop and the side loops, makes the sheath nice and compact. Spare sheaths are cheap btw, so bought a backup. The lock was stiff, but eased a bit after use, it’s fine now. Has your DBK finally arrived?

I really don't understand the reasoning behind the crossguard on a smaller knife like that. It gets in your way. You often need every bit of the handle, and then such a crossguard quickly becomes annoying.
Oh come on Rob I didn't want to buy a new knife, but as I regard your opinion and the two knives I have coming the dbk 2nd batch and your Mk Tribute are a ways off seems i might be pestering knives and tools or hinnie haynes. Lol
People give Morakniv so much crap for the plastic sheath, but the thing is Fallkniven sheaths aren't any better. Also, for what you pay you get a rather average package. Meaning, they definitely have to work on the sheaths. I'd much rather have them scrap the whole briefcase shenanigans and simply make a decent sheath. From what I've seen Cold Steel make better handles - well, at least for my big hand they feel better.
I haven't used the F1X elmax yet. The extra length of the blade on the F1x will make it a more useful tool for processing wood the R2 is a more compact package and far lighter to carry especially around the neck as many people use it. Spine on the R2 is also sharper.

The SRK is a completely different knife and much bigger, I can't really say I'd rather the H1 , I like both but I prefer the Elmax to 3g and VG10.

It would really be a last resort to use the edge on a ferrorod.
Bison bushcraft tweed smock, I only wear it when it's a bit chilly and no rain.

Oh come on Rob I didn't want to buy a new knife, but as I regard your opinion and the two knives I have coming the dbk 2nd batch and your Mk Tribute are a ways off seems i might be pestering knives and tools or hinnie haynes. Lol

People give Morakniv so much crap for the plastic sheath, but the thing is Fallkniven sheaths aren't any better. Also, for what you pay you get a rather average package. Meaning, they definitely have to work on the sheaths. I'd much rather have them scrap the whole briefcase shenanigans and simply make a decent sheath. From what I've seen Cold Steel make better handles - well, at least for my big hand they feel better.

I haven't used the F1X elmax yet.
The extra length of the blade on the F1x will make it a more useful tool for processing wood the R2 is a more compact package and far lighter to carry especially around the neck as many people use it. Spine on the R2 is also sharper.
