I remember the day I logged on and got the update for patch 1.10 …… I had never played ladder before so I was really excited to try it, and this was when they first introduced upping items and they expanded the rune word roster. I started my Paladin and was playing with a friend of mine, and we were just levelling up playing act 2 nightmare, we were just running through the Far Oasis looking for mobs, so I run over and I kick a jar and put pops a unique ring, so I immediately think “yay a Raven Frost!” or something mediocre. Oh no this it a gosh darn SoJ! My stomach dropper, I might have just found what could possibly be one of the first Stones of Jordan to drop on USeast at least , so my friend thinks she can trade it for something good despite everyone starting fresh with the ladder season. So she goes off into the trading rooms to see what’s on the market and comes back with a mother loving Guardians Angel and a Head Striker! :D I couldn’t have been more excited because the head striker was the first item that came to mind when the idea of upping items was tossed around. I threw a Shael rune in there and that damn sword stayed in my paladins hand for months, I think it was only replaced by a Death Cleaver my friend gave me after he stopped playing. The Gangels also got upped eventually and was my end build armour, but paired with an Ancients Pledge in a Zakarum shield i felt unstoppable!! I had a 6 shael phase blade on the switch with a HoZ for smiting…..man those were good times!

I played D2 back in the 2000-2003 days, and more recently platinumed D3 on Playstation. Yeah, it was decent and enjoyable, but not as addictive and fun as D2. But in the more recent past I considered myself to be a POE player. That's really where I found enjoyment in ladders. Having a specific build in mind to start with...so that you can get to your end game build faster, that was always fun and exciting. Plus, new mechanics, cosmetics, economy, and so on just added to the fun of everyone starting from scratch. A level of excitement around how you're being tactical in your start, mid game, and end game approaches. Maybe you'll plan on farming specific items for profit, or simply use one class to benefit your next class faster, and so on. I'm now a full on D2R player. And am looking forward to jumping into the ladders.
Something else to mention. In POE ladder is everything for most players. Some say that non ladder character go to the graveyard. Meaning if you're not playing ladder, you're not playing in the most current and best way. But I find enjoyment in playing non ladder characters too. Sometimes I'll create a ladder character specifically to get gear that is needed to enhance a non ladder character.
as a kid, i always hated when the ladder would reset. I never understood it at the time but now i do.
Played D2 since 2003, overall a good explanation of the ladder. Out of the 3 seasons that I played ladder, the highest toon I had was a 98 Hammerdin.. back then I believe the top 1000 players were ranked, from the first person to the last. The highest I got was around 300 but eventually I dropped out of the top 1k due to the BOTs taking over the game. This really ruined it and continuing to play became a bit pointless. What I enjoyed the most was unique ladder content because like you said, it was the only way to obtain ladder specific items. Given that BOTs SHOULD not be an issue this time, it will be interesting to see how many folks dedicate themselves to get beyond 97 because at that point it is when experience becomes torture. I had a good group of 3 to 4 friends and they usually would invite other players for TOP 2 Baal runs… this meant the top two level chars would kill baal and unparty from the rest after the minions died. This way the top two players would divide the experience from an 8 player session to get the most experience. I made it through about 1/4 of the way to 99 but I stopped as it just gets monotonous to continue Baaling for days on end and like I mentioned before, what is the point of competing with folks using BOTs. I think Blizzard adding new content will definitely spruce things up.

wish i could earnestly play in ladder, just dont really have the time to commit to it now between work and being a single dad to my toddler niece and nephew (my brother and his wife passed last year and left me in charge of the kids). Kind of a shame i never took the opportunity when it was available.
Man, that's a tough situation to be in. Your niece and nephew are fortunate to have you in their lives!

Man, I haven't played D2 since I was a kid, and not really having anyone to play with, I didn't learn much.
Fast forward to now, I actually have some idea of what I'm doing. I actually completed Hell mode, which was the biggest accomplishment I have ever had in D2. Thanks for the tips and tricks brother.

My friend got me into this addictive game a couple of months ago and I've become instantly hooked. I play when I get free time after work and spending time with the kids. I love it , it's actually a tough game and a really big grind , currently working my way through all the characters and now on barbarian ( already done a playthrough to hell with Sorc , paladin , assassin & druid ). I'm excited for ladder but with the limited time I've got and with a game coming out that I'm extremely excited for , I'll not be progressing far into the ladder I believe. I'll still anticipate though. Love all your vids and keep it up.

Anyway, great stuff with your videos, I especially like the vides about unique items. It really shows in detail what are they offten missing and how could blizzard improve them possibly.
I’m a permanent casual. I always made ladder chars, but I would also always forget to log on long enough to have them annulled.
Now with four chars in hell and four in nightmare, I’m further along in the game than I have ever been. I’m also a severe altoholic, running only eight chars alongside each other is really restrained for beeing me.
So what I’m saying is that I’m pretty sure I’ll start a couple of new ones when the season rolls around, but I’m almost as sure that they won’t hit 99.

At level 98 only Baal gives XP. 1 death might cost You A DAY of grinding to that 99.
One other piece of advice I can offer, most people will play as a Sorc or Hammerdin because they are the easiest to level, Sorc being first usually. Hammerdins are harder to gear up though. So if you enjoy playing the other char classes, there is usually less of them (within each character class ladder rank). So if your goal is to get to the top first, you can pick a class that isn't as popular. The one issue here is that not all character classes can run Baal on their own or worst yet, host the runs themselves without having godly gear. This can be mitigated by having online friends that are running Sorcs or Hammerdins. From what I recall, Necros and Assasins were the least played as far as Ladder rankings went back in the day. Sorry its been 10-11 years lol

Ladder is a gold rush to:
hit 99 ASAP if you play a lot or
MF the shit out of the new items and runewords if you don't have the time to race hardcore players.
Back then I used to just play to try to upgrade runes. Because ladder used to be the only time you can keep upping runes.
I always play solo self found and leveling. Looking forward to a fresh start and that satisfying feeling of progression as I get myself thru Hell. My advice to newer players would be to just play to have fun. Do your MF runs somewhere where you feel safe to do so even if that means going back to Nightmare. Good stuff can drop doing NM Meph and Baal. You can then use that stuff to make your Hell MF runs alot easier. The game WILL give you what you need but will often give you what someone else needs. Find that inner hustler and do some trading. Bases, Uber Keys, useful Charms are all pretty easy to find(in Diablo terms) and are very trade worthy. If you find or think you are stuck, try going back and leveling up a few times. 2 to 3 levels on you and your Merc can make a huge difference in your Merc getting wasted and actually surviving. And as always the most important thing for building wealth is just straight up repetition. Even if you get lucky early with a sweet drop you still need to commit to sometimes triple digit numbers of runs to find the good stuff. That's why I said earlier to just make sure you are having fun. Have fun = Keep Playing = Find Good Stuff =)

What remains when the ladder reset and the character goes non-ladder ? All inventory itens in body and stash ? Runes, charms, jewels, potions ... or only itens in body ?
Everything converts to no ladder, stash, character, and shared stash.
Shared stash will be temporary, you won't be able to put things into it only take them out. And when the next ladder starts anything left in the temp shared stash will be gone.
Ladder duration is 4 months, so a pretty decent time to clear out the temp stash
Wish i could invest the same amount of time like 2001, but thats way way out of reach. With 1-2 hours every second day i can probably reach level 99 by the end of the season.
I finally reached level 93 on my regular account on one char and with endgame gear on the hammerdin.
I‘ll probably try out a druid, as i never played one. Equipment is cheap, even early on and he is at least decent. Trapsin, summon necro or javazon seem to be the far better choice, but we will see which builds profit most from the changes.
I tried HC ladder in 2001 Highest I got was 92 sorc, two bow amazons 92 89. I won't do this ladder HC or SC until you make a video about any new items you find. I don't have enough friends or fanaticism to try again. To me it's about bragging rights.
It is worth mentioning that ladder has monsters with 100% HP and defense like Single player so it is actualy also more challenging than non ladder because non ladder has monsters with only 75% HP and defense. Oh and also AI of ladder monster is faster so they are more agressive.

@@GGMentor yeah, its not easy to find out tho, info about faster agressive AI can be found on arreat summit but the HP and defense stuff for that you need to dig deep as it can be found in 1.10 patch notes. The exact info about this at the end of patch notes is this:
"Monsters (except for SuperUniques) in non-ladder Realm games are now at 75% HP (Hell), 85% AC (Nightmare & Hell), and don't increase their AI speed for higher difficulties."
So my previous message wasnt 100% right as I said its 75% for armor when it is 85% and forgot about Superuniques.
I wonder if they really used the lower HP and def for current D2R nonladder as patch is different and they have ladder RWs. It would be great to check that out to be sure. I ask

I won't be able to compete in ladder any more, simply too busy with life now. But I will still play ladder, my goal is a to gather 2 useful ladder only runewords each ladder season and bring them to my casual game, hopefully I'm able to gather them all after several seasons.

I never played d2 classic and only play d2r, don't think I will play ladder if there is only 2 new runework and I doubt it will be better than existing ones, but I'm just assuming , let's see what they actually are , but I'm looking forward to new changes, hopefully they will make set items better
If you’re newer to the game don’t do hardcore ladder, you get dedicated murderer players attempting to stop you reaching your goals

Even 4 months is too short. A year would be ideal. Who in the hell has enough time every 3-4 months to play that much. Not only that, leveling every 3-4 months is going to get boring , very very fast. Screw that.

This will be my first ladder as I just started playing when D2R came to console. Subscriber here, thank you for the education. What is your take on Bots? I would think they would help keep prices down but make the race pointless. Obviously not an issue for console, don't think so anyway. Just got a PS5, thank god as the loading times on the PS4 were horrendous. Now I don't dread working my mules! 😂
I hate bots in d2. Diablo II is a game meant to be played by people not robots.
Let the people play keep the bots out.

grats man, that is some accomplishment especially since I am sure you were playing D2 LoD and had to compete with bots. Hard to compete with a program that can run 24/7/365 (as long as the power or internet don't go out lol)
Hi will all items earned transfer over with your character after ladder finishes? Or do you only keep runewords. The characters transfer over to your regular characters? What if you're at max? Have to delete one I'm guessing. Thanks, it is tough to get this info. I play on Ps5 if it matters but maybe not
Everything you obtain during ladder gets transferred to non ladder including the characters.
Also pretty sure ladder characters and non ladder characters take up the same slots.

It's a flag upon character creation.
At the bottom when you create your character there are three flags.
Hardcore, ladder, and classic

Personally I think that they ought to give you a link on your hard drive storage space that's not saved online and you can have as much storage space as you want but the four pages that they give you online is all you get online but you can have as much offline storage space as you want and then it doesn't crowd up their servers or anything else that way they can give you you know if they wanted to a month to get everything transferred to your offline stash and then you could pull it to your online stash as needed
What should I do with the non-ladder char which is transferred after the end of the season? Is its lifespan over? Since every ladder player always joins the new season when it begins, in that case, they will never touch the non-ladder game.
It really depends on you, I usually like to keep a few non ladder characters to play with my non ladder friends or viewers.
I think they said that once the Ladder season ends, you'll be able to create the new runewords in D2R. Unlike previous LOD season. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's really up to you it won't be a 1:1 conversion.
Early ladder items are hyperinflated
Keep building your non ladder chars. In fact, maybe even focus your ladder chars towards getting specific gear that your non ladder chars need. It's fun having truly godly characters between ladder resets.
My only major beef with the ladder is the short duration of it. I believe they said that the new ladder in D2R will be three months in duration. This is way too short as a working adult with various responsibilities and commitments. I don't play D2 for competitive purposes, so the only reason for me to do the ladder would be to gather any possible ladder-only runewords. Then the question becomes whether or not I would be able to create those ladder-only runewords before three months pass by. I already know the answer to that is a resounding "no," and so the ladder is pointless for me. In my opinion, the ladder should only exist for one reason, and that is to provide a competition for the minority of players who care about reaching level 99 first. No specific items or other benefits should tied to the ladder.
They Agree with you 3 month ladder is too short they said so themselves during the dev conference. They said 6 months was too long and were leaning toward 4-5 months they said.

For me, I dislike the ladder idea. I'm not in much of a position to grind, so when I find something on a grind, even so much as a mid-tier rune, I'm buzzing. The idea that this is going to be lost is demoralising and does make me want to sack the game off. Being forced into a ladder reset is not a great move in my mind. Games should be about choice.
Therefore, I don't really get why, for those who do want to be competitive and go for 99, there's a not just separate mode for that purpose, so you can leave people like me alone in my own fully-functional world! If you competitors want to play with people like me, whichever character creates the game sets whether the mode is ladder or non ladder and items and variables can be adjusted to that game on that occasion - so if you as a ladder character creates and I as non ladder joins, I'll not be able to use my non ladder created runewords etc. If non ladder creates, you don't have any limitations on what can be used, but you can't take non ladder created runewords from me back across to your ladder. If people are keen on the idea of their fresh start, just start a new character like normal and don't trade or take items from people. You don't need to whack the whole player base into a reset. If I want to restart... I can literally do exactly that by deleting and re-creating a character. Everyone can be in a position to keep the game relevant and fun for them, rather than every person being forced into something that makes basically everything they've done and worked towards a giant waste of time.
I see why it's appealing for many. Personally I just think it's one of the worst decisions in gaming history.
I get what your saying but I think your confusing terms.
Making a new character is not the same thing as the beginning of a ladder.
When you create a new character you access to all the items you have stored up. Even if you have no items stored up other people do. There is an economy already in place trade values are set in stone and people are regularly giving away items for free. There are also many items that have no value because they are very common items.
At the start of a ladder no one has any items the economy is still being formed, no one is giving away items for free, and every item you find has value.
@@GGMentor I might be confusing the two yeah and I get your explanation regarding why one of my suggested solutions doesn't quite fit the bill.
I still feel like, from my understanding, it seems like I've grinded away hours and hours to acquire gear/runes/high level characters etc that are going to have all the use of an inflatable dartboard once the ladder resets. Personally I like the idea of an established economy with more objective and set pricing too; I know much more about what is expected payment for different things.
I do expect there will be millions of people who are going to love the idea of a fresh, new grind and I see how it appeals as a way to increase replayability for those Diablo 2 lovers who have been through resets, saw it coming. I think for me and probably many newer D2R gamers who are coming to the game only to one day log in and find all their stuff rendered useless it's going to be a massive turn off, literally. The concept of taking away everything a player has earned is - to my mind - really messed up! Not only that, it makes me not want to play the game in the run up to the announced reset because I'm fully aware that everything I'm doing is as useful as using a chocolate fireguard XD

Probably going to just jump into Baal runs and PK players. Not enough time to make ladder juggling work and family life. Make it more challenging for those participating while doing something enjoyable for myself.

I mean you don't have to keep playing ladder you can just do one ladder season.

So what happens after level 99?
They should make it possible for non botters to hit 99. The current experience system needs a change.

Just before lod was introduced there was a race for the first level 99. that was when diablo was the only monster that gave you xp after level 95.
Some german players by the ingame nick zycu and zyco were pretty high up (level 92/93) just before this rush started. They donated most of the gear for the german barb called GERbarb, which was a team of around 50 people. The account was shifted around, so it played 24 hours.
The russians had a similar team around RUSSbarb and after 6 weeks the german team won (slightly)
The strategy was to create a game with 7 players, find a xp shrine in act1, create a tp right next to it, clear the chaos sanctuary except the last seal. GERbarb would come in, take the shrine, go to the cs where diablo was static‘d and whirled down and the just kill him and move to the next game. The problem was that you needed a lot of people to fill the game, so there was always players from the other team that went to the team channel found out the current password and tried (sometimes even succeed to pk) the barb.
It was such an intense experience and so much fun.

I play on Xbox. I fully expect that ladder will be coming around the same time as PC. Maybe a week or two later, but it'll be coming.

Too much of a grind for my taste. I only have 1 char and its only level 78. Perhaps a reward for top 10 on ladder? Or a symbol over char making top 3 available to be seen in all game modes to let others see your dedication? Otherwise it's for free time kids and streamers making gaming a full time job
Ladder is a grind, but there is also no one forcing anyone to take part in it.
If it's not to your taste just keep playing non ladder the runewords will be in your hands eventually
