- We talk about Character Design a ton, on a channel called Character Design Forge, but often it’s about the specifics. The Mario, the Mickey Mouse. The individual characters for specific purposes and stories. This video is one I’ve wanted to make forever though, because on the other hand, it covers a wide variety of examples, through different mediums and formats. One thing unites all of them, though. There’s a base, a default, a starting point, that can then be repeated over and over. What makes a good base, and at the end, can we make one ourselves? One that other artists, like perhaps even yourself, could use?

I'm SO down for a designer toy renaissance. Let artists' creativity litter the shelves, not capitalistic companies riding on trends.
Most of us humans are all suckers for huge corporation owned brands.
me too!! i remember seeing all the weird funky figures on the shelves in hot topic and justice when i was younger and i was just a little too young to really appreciate it or participate. the day i get to see tokidoki on the shelves again is the day ill be happy

Honestly, I actually think the soulless eyes are the only somewhat ingenious parts of Funko pops. Not because they aren't ugly as sin, from a design perspective I kind of hate them, but from a manufacturing perspective eyes are seemingly the thing that get misprinted the most, so just not giving a character eyes side steps the whole issue. I also think not adding eyes prevents you from creating something that might be unintentionally much scarier (for example, the eyes being too realistic or beady for the otherwise chibi and cute characters), which probably saves on design time.

So they're soulless from a design perspective and soulless from a manufacturing perspective too 😔
I feel like Funko pops were designed to be marketable and even corporate from the very start.

The funko pops that actually look good (imo) are either non-humans, or characters that are so cartoony they don't really look human anyway. What I really like apart from the fact that they aren't ugly looking is that they're usually more unique, since the creators have to work with a character that doesn't fit the base of "same person different hair".
Yeah I agree. I've got a Fallout sentry bot funko and it actually looks pretty good. It almost doesn't even look like a funko pop at all because its about as far from that generic human base as you could get.
Yeah i own three funkos (chosen from a pile of leftovers at a closing gamestop), a nebula, a captain marbel and a porg. The porg is by far the nicest one. Barely even looks like funko
It also helps if the characters are already stylised to have bigger heads and simple round eyes
Like Widow, Webber and Wendy from Don't Starve, who look pretty great as far as Funkos go. Winston though... He has much smaller and oblong eyes, not big button eyes, so he looks off in Funko style
Which is why I only have the other three lmao (although the little Chester that comes along with Winston is quite tempting...)
@@Avi2Nyan Woah I didn't know there were Don't Starve funkos. I just had a look and yeah you're right.
I have a few Funkos of Reaper fro m Overwatch and the fact that his skull mask means he doesn't have the beady eyes makes his statues a lot more appealing. Plus the button eyes feel a lot more fitting on animal characters too, like Pokemon, since animals tend to have larger, dark colored eyes anyways.
I regularly use picrew and other base character design makers when I'm having a bad pain day or just struggling to narrow down a concept and I need a launching off point to pick very basic themes, colors, and other features to then interpret and iterate on towards a more concrete and original design than what the base might provide
I've been interested in doll/toy customizing for a few years and blank sculptures/figures is something I've been super interested in but not ready to jump into just yet. I do have a collection of abandoned funkos from a friend that I'm planning to sand down, paint over, and turn into other works. Literally anything other than a funko face I'm so tired
I think my ultimate opinion on Funko and its related competitors is that capitalism is the enemy. Niche art being monopolized and mass produced is so soul crushing. I'm so proud of you for creating your own figure and I'm excited to make my own Labko!
Picrews really good for basic design stuff say if you want an idea of what you want to design,they just are generally good to use. I like them ::)
My god I do the same every time I need to make an oc. Or just want decent art of them without commissioning someone.
Yes I love picrew!! I’ve recently used it to make up a whole team of magical boys and it helped me lay down a vibe that I liked for each individual character while still making them cohesive, along with making me able to remember the designs for when I actually get the opportunity to make the final designs :))
I feel this conversation can go to OCs for fandoms in Sonic, My Little Pony, Epithet Erased, and Steven Universe. They seem to have a template with some of their characters.
My Little Pony is the easiest example. If you take of their manes, wings, etc, most of them are pretty indistinguishable except for their eyes and color. Sonic also has those OCs that might have originated from the fact that Shadow and Silver seem to be variations of Sonic. Meanwhile, in a series like Mario, they have a variety of character designs with almost non repeating. The only exceptions are Species like Toads, but most people don’t want to be a Toad.
Steven Universe has something slightly different. All the Gems are based on, well, gems; their lives are based on the gems as well. The reason Ruby and Sapphire are together is because they are the same species and the Diamonds rule all other Gems because on how people value diamonds more than any other gemstone.
Another example is Epithet Erased with the mechanic where their powers are based on a single word. Molly, the protagonist, has the Epithet “Dumb” and Giovanni, her villainous surrogate father, has the Epithet “Soup”. This can easily be used to create powers and for an OC with the magic system’s limitation letting the creative juices flow.
Epithet Erased has a fandom?? I thought no one really talked about it that much. It's cool seeing it here!
as someone thats around the fandom.. yes MLP has extremely repetitive OCs and even the characters in the show all share the same shape besides their hair.
its kinda cynical to me cause it makes cuteness overstay its welcome and says the wrong messages to kids about whats "normal". cuteness needs something ugly to be contrasted with but the entire show is made of cute characters.. we never see a fat or "ugly" character which kinda makes the show look cheap IMO.
@@ali32bit42 yeah, the reason they all look the same was just to cut costs in production and make animating easier, cause if all the characters have the same body type you can reuse animations for all of them lol, and that's also the reason most of them don't have patterns and are just a solid color, it's just easier to animate
But in the newer seasons a bit more variety started showing, with different species and some ponies with patterns instead of a solid color, stuff like that
And in G5 they look a bit more varied since they have a higher budget and 3d is a bit easier, but still mostly the same body types
@@max_punch judging from older shows that were animated with PAPER . its not really a budget issue , hasbro is a billion dollar corporation. they can afford transformers movies. its mainly that they wanted to sell toys. and to sell toys you want less variety in the injection molds .
when the entire show was animated in vector graphics and rigs. i doubt that it was too hard to make small adjustments to what characters look like . its not budget cuts. its an issue by design.
@@ali32bit42 yeah, MLP was mainly made to sell toys so I guess that also explains why they look similar. But at least G4 was an improvement from the previous show, the ponies looked quite a bit more generic on that one
The default Mii is what got me to watch this tbh... I love him so much, he deserves more appreciation.

The weird bit I found among collectors is that people often compare Funkos to Nendoroids, at least in the anime and gaming side of the community. Nendoroids also use a base model, but each one is designed carefully with details so you might not even notice it. The process also involves a lot of manual work, which explain their insanely expensive price (there's a docu here on yt)!
Also, that little figure you made is so cute! I love the artists designs as well- I can imagine myself buying that Luis or Christina one :')
Probably why I love LEGO a lot. Not only are the bricks versatile, but also the figures. They have very simple details, but just enough to where you can say, "Oh, that's Obi-Wan Kenobi".
And oh boy, were the Clone Wars minifigures cursed. Maybe not as cursed as some of LEGO's other stuff (Looking at you LEGO Nesquik Bunny). That face is unsettling. *shudders*
I love that you didn't JUST give your opinions on the rise of funko, but you also offered your own creative spin on base characters as a response to that. Then you poured hours (and tears I'm sure) into bringing that idea to life. And on top of it all, you've presented that offering to the public WITHOUT the motive of profits which I think is a beautiful counter cultural move. I will 100% be downloading the Labko template to play around with, so thank you for that! 🖤

POSITIVE INTERACTION PRIOR TO VIEWING YEEHAAAAAW
as a 3D artist. i find bases to be a double edged sword. they make the modeling and design process incredibly fast and efficient. they may save you weeks or even make the modeling part last only a few hours.
but on the other hand.. it can be blatantly obvious that you used a base model for something and it can make your work look repetitive or even drop you into the uncanny valley. as is the case with TV shows like MLP where all the female characters have identical body types with basically no difference other then hair and maybe eyes and colors. this is especially if you put it next to a character from the same base. i often even see other artists create the exact same recolor up to 100 times with the exact same pose and expression and facial structure which makes you look cheap IMO . it just doesn't look right to me if you can take a character set and put them on top of each other only to realize they line up perfectly in terms of silhouette
one of my friends/costumers pointed out that when i use a Base model.. my characters look like they came from an RPG character creator . and i agree with that , especially with 3D models its hard to deform an existing design or base to make the shape you need to make something look unique compared to something you make from scratch with the intention of making that specific design alone.
i personally choose to model everything from scratch per character . not only do i get better characters.. but starting from scratch can be a HUGE opportunity for improvement in my skills can say with 100% confidence that if i had used templates or bases from the start my designs would have looked ugly as hell right now.
I would absolutely love to see a video of you customising your Labkos! It would the perfect way to demonstrate the limitless creative potential you can make with these bases! And the research that lead up to their creation was really great in of itself! (I also happen to have a rather negative viewpoint on Funko Pops man, they're just everywhere and unavoidable)

The only funko pop i own (that i like) is my aggretsuko one. Her proportions are already similar to the funko pop base and her face has a complicated design that kind of overpowers the molded eyes to the point it barely looks like a funko
Imo the best looking figures are the ones which avoid the funko eyes while still doing something different (not just a character’s base design, a specific version)
Came to say the same, the Aggretsuko funko looks really good because it just looks like a regular Aggretsuko figure rather than a funko, the only difference from her original design is a slightly different head shape
awesome video! i think i was still pretty young when the funko pops started swamping everything, so i feel like i missed out on the more indie vinyl toy trends. what i did get into though were toy customizer youtube videos, where people would resculpt and repaint monster high dolls, littlest pet shops, my little ponies, etc. it very much gave me the same excitement of taking a base and using it to make something completely new. it's been a long while since i did any customizing of my own, so i'm super tempted by the labko project...i'll have to brainstorm ideas!
I was in my teens, and just getting into graphic design when vinyl art toys where at their height. I can confirm, it was a wild time! So many wonderful and inventive things got made.
As for funko pops. I get why people like them. But imo a lot of the time the designs just....don't get translated onto the template well.
Gonna add also that making my own mold for a figure to make copies was actually, genuinely something I've wanted to do for a few years now, so it's nice to see an example of how that would be done wrt the labko!

Somenthing i noticed once : funko pops rely heavily on the cheerleader effect , many funkopops look kinda decent if you brush over them ,
If you focus one specific ones they look boring drab and a bit tacky ,
So yeah one funko is pretty much usless you have to get more of them
base characters, a subject that is way more intresting then I thought. The culture envolving this thing is so complex and fun, and I lived the Labko! It really have a lot of potential, contineu with the good work!
That whole vinyl toy segment reawakened some odd memory of mine. I specifically remember a vinyl toy that was like a little robot character peeking out of a teacup. I think it was called little tea or something. I've looked for it but I can't find it anywhere. Anyone else remember those?

Theyre called Lunartiks!
The GOAT of base characters is Sackboy. His default design is cute and expressive, and this remains no matter how many changes are made. He has 3 games and countless DLC packs worth of costume pieces that can be mixed and matched, stickers allow for near limitless colours, details and patterns (although stickering can be difficult on costume pieces with textures that wrap weirdly), decorations allow additional 3D shapes and accessories to be placed on top of the costume, and the crossover DLC packs allow Sackboy to be various iconic characters.
If Sony decided to mass produce Sackboy figurines based on the licensed DLC costumes, not only would they sell like hot cakes, they'd probably put Funko out of business overnight.

I put together the starry night lego with my mom recently and I completely understand what you mean about template systems needing to be flexible enough to create something specific while still looking like a lego or a mii or what have you. It's such a fun thing to experience how ppl have made those design choices!

The default design is often my own personal favorite.
When it comes to Lego, my favorite minifigure is one with an unprinted torso of any color, the basic smiley face, and either short brown hair if male or the slightly longer flat brown hair if female. I do like different permutations of the outfit (sleeves matching torso and differently colored hips and legs that match each other, hips match the torso while limbs are a different color, completely uniform color for the torso, hips, limbs, and hands with a color matching motorcycle helmet, etc). My Lego "sig fig" has generally been barely variant from this template, or at least it was until the collectible minifigures series gave me so many new parts options I couldn't help but make a bat-winged gray mouse man.
My favorite Transformers are automobiles who transform to have the hood of the car become their chest and the trunk become their feet, or quadrupedal animals who wind up with their animal face as their chest and their limbs consist more or less of the animal limbs flipping out components to reveal mechanical elements and usable digits.
I don't play Minecraft, but for now at least Steve is my favorite skin. If I were to swap out anything, I'd make him _even plainer_ by removing his facial hair and making his eyes and skin tone flatter.
My first thought was UB Funkeys. It seems like it wasn’t very popular and didn’t last for very long. But I think it created a fairly flexible standard model for their characters.

I actually used base character designs for one of my games. I thought it wouldve been easier/cheaper than completely unique characters but it barely saved much of any time unfortunately
Half-way through watching this, I realized the character I've been working on for over 5 years really reminds me of a Figma and could probably be used as a base design.
Unfortunately I don't really know how to test this theory... nor do I own a Figma to see if it could work joint-wise...
Your Labko figure is a pretty cool idea, immediately got a robot design in my head the instant I saw the model shape. Hope the idea works well.
If I weren’t in finals right now, I’d be designing a grizzled PI or a gritty outlaw Labko so hard.

Very worth the hype! Character customization is one of the most satisfying creative...activities? It's honestly very difficult to try to be simplistic and broad with the pre-set features you can give something for video games and the like, and even more difficult to make a malleable base form to work from. I think you've done an outstanding job of that with the Labko! Giving artists the chance to make their own modifications and creative choices is very freeing, and I can see the benefits of that versus having to make simplistic overlays or a multitude of specific add-ons. So, basically: great video!! Sorry about your microphone. :(
A bit of business, a bit of history, a bit of an essay, and a whole bunch of creativity. Hope that Labko takes off across multiple communities!
i'm reminded of how most of the npcs in botw literally use miis as a base, and are just filtered through a more detailed engine(?)

So glad you mentioned Pop Mart here, as I've fallen in love with their Skullpanda toys. That said, I was bummed that the second-to-last Skullpanda series was based on... the Addams Family? It was a really collab imo, and I was happy when the most recent series was back a regular, non-IP-based theme. Also, another company I have started to like is called Toy City. I've become a huge fan of their Laura Girl figurines. Very nice stuff.

Makes sense for 3d sculptures to have bases, you can still be very creative with a single base because there’s so much you can add to it.

the cases of figures is something that happens with a lot of things, not just funko. I was on the edges of the monster high collector community at its peak, and there was a whole terminology to talk about which dolls were harder to find. funko's deal with it strikes me as a lot more nefarious though, since mh generally just had more of the main characters since kids wanted em, and it was an unfortunate coincidence that it made background characters so much harder to get firsthand.
This video was in my recs and it's late so i clicked because i was intrigued. I'm a fashion doll collector and customizing is a big thing in this community and a lot of the "rules" of character design and base designs applies to so many things in the ooak doll and just collecting community
Thank you so much for talking about this a topic, i'm really glad someone like yourself sees the value in art toys. I myself did research about it twice. If you are interested theres also a documentary movie out there, about the vinyl toy industry around the period of its peak called "The vinyl frontier".
Sadly theres kinda not that much info out there, best I could find the documentary and a couple of books. Once again thank you putting this information out there for a new generation.
P.S. The same guy who helped make Kidrobot (Paul Budnitz) is now doing another vinyl toy company for the modern era called Super Plastic.

I believe lego is the best way to customize something because just because of that one thing, I've made tons of characters outside of lego because it started with lego.
I really love the Base Character design you made and honestly I'm ecstatic that the link has the 2D version because I'd love to make some stylized artworks of my own existing characters with it, it's so adorable, which fits my actual style really well :D
I love using the Mii maker to make my friends and people i know. It's a handy way to block out characters as well. Miitopia is even more suitable for this
This is one topic I have NEVER stopped to think about. So interesting, and the last part is so inspiring, how come this doesn't have more views? Lots of luck in Labko and your other projects!

This is so cool! I’m a sucker for figures so this has me really excited. If I have any ideas, I’ll probably make one of my own designs because this has just opened a new door of inspiration to get through my mostly lacklustre schedule. Also, damn, that’s a lot of effort for a video. Honestly though, a video where you make a sculpture always seems hard, but the payoff makes it so worth it in the end.

One of my favourite ‘figures’ I own is a bust of my ESO character (my friend either got it 3D printed or sculpted from some sort of material) it’s nice to have a such a personal item for a Khajiit as most fantasy based things are more human than beast. (She initially ripped my character model from the game so I could use it as a drawing reference)

i like funko pops a lot but, i dont quite get the hate they get?
like i understand some people not being a fan of the base design, but why are people so angry?
dunno if its the us, but stores where i live dont really have funko pops/plushies/figures whatever
the only ones that do are stores for collectors and game/anime merch store
you only find them if youre actively looking for it, otherwise youd probably never know about them
I think it’s mostly because it’s a pretty boring product all things considered. Funko pops don’t play that much with the facial expressions and they’re also all mono-pose. The fact that they’re so static means that all you can really do with them is put it on a shelf and forget about it. There are much better base design products than Funko.
Lego minifigs fit a purpose in lego’s product line and are also posable, so that increases their value a ton since they can be a part of a much larger display. Which makes up for its lack of detail.
Nendoroid is Japan’s equivalent to Funko. The figures are posable, have swappable expressions and parts, as well as accessories. If you get bored of how you posed it, you can always change it.

They have Subway in most countries. Americas restaurants have filled the world and made it harder to fully escape America. I have visited multiple countries and couldn’t escape companies like Subway, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and more. I appreciate this video it gives good insight.

i own one pop figure, a flash that i bought at a convention because it was one of the only things i could afford. opened it up, covered the soulless voids with some stick on googly eyes from the dollar store, and put it back in the box like that. it's been years and i still find it funny

Made my base character in magicavoxel for a game I'm still worldbuilding for, and using it in a practice game I'm making. Idk if this video has any specific obvious takeaway for me, but it's making me think. "How could I better make the base character so it's more customizable." Idk if it's an answer, as that's kinda the point I had making it, but it's good to rethink it. (Congrats on making yours in blender. I'm terrified of blender, but need to use it to fix technical difficulties. Hands in unity disappeared, and materials don't work right)
Btw, that snapshot of your wife's shop reminded me of Charles & Ray Eames. This is THE compliment, as I see them as the perfect relationship goal.

i'm curious if you ever played ModNation Racers. its character design and creator was heavily based on urban vinyl, and allowed you to sculpt an extremely impressive variety of things
that game came in the wave of Play.Create.Share stuff that happened after littlebigplanet got big. Speaking of which, it's funny that lbp looks so similar to FunkoPop in a way, but like with way more heart and character. I think because the could emote and have actual personalities, it helped a lot

Very cool. Despite being one of those weirdos who messes around w/ custom paints on his gunpla, I never really thought too much about the old art figs & their designs. Mostly 'cause the prices were too much for me (Those blank Munnys used to Hella Expensive back in the day). As for your Labko... I dig it but you know how I roll. I Promise Nothing... but I Might have to get in on this. It's just too neat a dealie to not try my hand at. = )

Part of why I adore Lego so much is exactly that. It allows for so much freedom with designs and customization, without compromising the core aspects of the pieces. Most torsos, arms, heads and legs are the exact same, but their design philosophy allow for these pieces to perfectly embody any character imaginable.

They are much more expressive, dynamic, cheaper, come in a fun collectable size, and often offer a better character selection than the Pop lines for their respective series. The "blind box" aspect isn't my favorite thing, but it does fix the 'bulk' problem Pops have.

Different context, but in Naruto, most of the jonin have pretty similar outfits. But with a few variations in how they wear their headbands and whatnot, Kishimoto makes a lot of distinct designs for minor characters
