    By far the best part of PragerU is that one video where they say that art has become "merely an expression of personal emotion" as a negative, without an iota of irony.

      I had to look this up and jeebus this is someone complaining about "kids these days" except instead of kids its art. Also ignores how much art is out there. There are plenty of galleries in my (fairly small SLC) city that have excellent classical-style art. Its almost like he is blinded by modern art that is put out to bring clients and money in and cannot see all the other great artists out there.

      Art is meant to be emotionless pretty pictures that stand for nothing except the pure mechanical skill that went into them.

      I go to an art school and i would totally agree that is correct yes. After all, no art, ever, in the history of our past, ever had more meaning then mechanical skill to it.

      There's a really good video about it talking about how these kinds of views on modern art relate to a fear of the devaluing of art as a medium that requires education and training to participate in, allowing people to sell things that don't have a strict value under capitalism for lots of money.

Thatcher moved conservatism away from that in the 70s and 80s, in line with the Reagan shift in the US. It centres around a desire to conserve our great institutions, from liberal democracy to common law and everything in between, but also provide a safety net of social reforms to help workers prosper. It came about as a response to workers voting rights and revolutionary sentiment, but I feel it does a very good job of finding a middle ground that a large proportion of working class people are in. In the UK, not so sure with the US, the working classes tend to be quite conservative with socialist economic tendencies.

    As a german speaking here:
    Abortion (for 'germanic' women) was actually outlawed in the Third Reich, after it had been legalized in the Weimar Republic.
    They also had this whole 'cult' around motherhood, with medals for women who bore more than four children. With the argument that, of course, these kids could then one day be used as soldiers for the homeland. Starting at age 14 or so.

      Karl Holde
      That was a huge gish gallop but I can refute that.
      Point 1: nationalism in itself isn’t a bad thing; it’s just being proud of your country. In the US there are plenty of things to be proud of, like free speech. Not fascism
      Point 2: they were saying throughout that video that they respect the right to protest, but that doesn’t mean they can’t disagree with the protest.
      Point 3: cops protect us, and to say supporting the people who go out and protect us is fascism, well that’s being ungrateful.
      Point 4: of course they’re anti left; they’re right wing. I’d say people who are left wing are anti right as well
      Point 5: military is what keeps our sovereignty, and while I admit the US military has done some fucked up things, saying that pro military=fascism is the same ungratefulness as shown above.
      Point 5: I don’t understand the logical loopholes one has to go through to get pro free speech into fascism? Fascism suppresses speech of the enemies, and free speech supports everyone’s right to speech. This point is fucking gay.
      Point 6: being anti feminist isn’t fucking fascism. It’s the same thing as being anti-left; saying you disagree with a movement that you disagree with isn’t fascism
      Point 7: they said anti civil rights, but that’s just a blatant lie. The video shown was one about how men should get married, and while I don’t intend to get married, I understand where they’re coming from with the whole married people are happier thing. Not fucking fascism.
      Point 8: you guys always do this; you conflate anti *illegal* immigrant with anti immigrant. Immigrants are a great thing for our economy and culture, in fact my mother was a *legal* immigrant from Mexico. Illegal immigrants are not good for us; they are essentially cutting the line for all those who patiently wait to get in legally, and the crime rate of illegal immigrants is a lot higher than law abiding citizens. Not fascism.
      Point 9: the wall would be ineffective, but the concept of securing our borders is helpful for our citizens. Not fascism.
      Point 10: I’ll give this point to you; they were anti union in that video, but once more, that still doesn’t equate to fascism.
      You know what is fascist? Antifa. If silencing the voice of your opposition through violence and slandering them with inaccurate titles to get the public to hate them isn’t fascism, I don’t know what is.

      @@cole8663 I'm nine months late, but here goes. I agree with you that certain terms that apply to political ideologies are thrown around as insults too often, but I really agree-er with the parallels Cody cited in the video, as pointed out in the response by the OP. I like that you took some time to write so much, so I wanted to respond to your points.
      Point 1: Just because a nation gets some things right does not mean we should fully worship the nation like some godly entity or not criticize it's leaders when they do wrong or that we should not try to change policies to progress with the era. weaponizing nationalism, i.e. trying to undermine your critics' or opponents' arguments with a simple "that's unamerican" is a potentially dangerous thing that stifles that free speech we're all so goddamn proud of. Asking for unwavering loyalty just because it's got that sweet-ass flag on it is fucking fascist. It's more patriotic to challenge your leaders to better the country than to worship them, or the chunk of rock that is the country, like gods.
      Point 2: Duh? Hard to criticize peaceful protest and still ostensibly support free speech. Doesn't mean they haven't totally tried to undermine and delegitimize the issues that lead to many of the protests they criticize. Perhaps we could look at some underlying issues the protestors are trying to bring light to instead of telling them to "GET BACK IN LINE, YOU INGRATES", like fascists do.
      Point 3: Of course there are good cops and bad cops, because people are good and bad. You should research some of the training police take, however. Training that reinforces the idea that they are warriors, not protectors as you think of them. Want to be grateful to police? how about we enact some policies that would actually improve communities and prevent crime? How about we improve the assessment and training of new officers so that only the proper people make the cut and are trained properly to deescalate situations? That could actually lead to an improvement in their image that would work to further reduce the danger they volunteer for.
      Point 4: THIS is a terrible mindset. I am left, but I'm not anti-right. It's not a damn sports game and I'm tired of leaders treating it as such. We're not trying to defeat the other side; we're trying to thoughtfully debate the pros and cons of extremely complicated and huge issues like, uh, a gigantic economy and it's place in a quickly changing world, so that we can reach a compromise between opposing systems of thought that can work the best. Noone is advocating for 100% socialism just like non of the billionaire funders of these propaganda machines aren't advocating for 100% capitalism because they benefit from subsidies they built into the system. Sensible people just want to achieve a solid middle ground that can actually work to better all people's lives.
      Point 5: It's not ungrateful to criticize a system when, as you admitted, it's fucking up. I could go into a similar argument about appreciating soldiers as I did cops. It is fascistic to ask for unwavering loyalty, though. It's also counter-productive as fuck.
      Point 5 again: Suppression. Yeah I feel like I just typed up a whole thing about painting your opponents as delegitimate and dangerous to your way of life and how that's fascist to stifle their right to believe and exercise their beliefs through democratic processes. Using free speech as a get out of jail free card for lying and misleading people is just bullshit. Proud of the bill of rights? hold these lying scumbags accountable. (please don't moral equivalency me on this argument. I am well-aware there are left-wing media sources that obfuscate facts, too. Fuck them for being counter-productive for a profit, also.)
      Point 6: Having an idea is not fascist. Oligarchs paying absurd amounts of personal fortunes(absurd, but drop in the bucket for them, or investment, even!)to try to delegitimize and quash movements using lies feels pretty fucking fascist, though. Perhaps there is some legitimacy to the concerns that lead to a social movement. Just because some people are going about it the wrong way doesn't mean the issues don't exist.
      Point 7: I don't want to watch whatever garbage PU published about marriage to really counter this, but I would bet money it cited some bullshit nuclear family idea and failed to cite any of the numerous scientific studies about the children raised in SO MANY different styles of "non-traditional" family. Please don't tell me that you're convinced man+woman+2.5 kids is the equation that equals well-rounded, productive member of society. Again, not gonna watch it anytime soon, but I'm sure that 5 minutes wasn't enough to cover the near-infinite number of variables, regarding either nature or nurture, that go into forming a human adult. I mean, at this point, when someone is actually telling you they have ALL the answers to such goddamn complicated problems, why do you still buy their shit?
      Point 8: Ok, you mentioned the crime rate thing. Cody covers this in his show. That is a disproven fact that PU and lots of anti-immigration pundits like to cite, published by a questionable "academic". THAT is the part that makes "anti-illegal immigration" fascist. You're trying to demonize a marginalized people to justify mistreatment and bad policy. I agree that undocumented immigrants are an issue, but not because they're rapists and drug peddlers that are trying to steal our american way of life. The immigration system is broken. Immigrants just want a chance at the mythical American dream you idolize. This is an extremely complicated issue with no easy solution and I've already typed too much to really get into our immigration system and treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers, but useful solutions don't begin with labeling them as criminals and, too frequently, sending them back to a country they have spent less time in than the US. Demonizing and purging other ethnic groups feels pretty damned fascist.
      Point 9: absolutely agree on both points. It's not only ineffective, though. It's actually quite outrageous. over three billion and counting of that tax money that you think the left wants to redistribute to illegals is now nothing more than a monument of hate honoring a wasteful, hateful man. I mean, come on, at some point it's going to have a giant "TRUMP" on it, can't you just feel that coming? as far as securing the borders, this issue is being painted as an invasion rather than as multiple humanitarian crises, many of which we have our fingers in.
      Point 10: Equate, no. Nearly always go hand-in-hand with, hmmmmmmmmmm. Seriously, though, there are some arguments against unions, but it could be that these billionaire investors have some motive other than "stifling a free market" when they publish anti-union propaganda...
      Finally, Antifa. We've come back to misrepresenting entire groups, like your point about police. Some people are dicks, some aren't. Some express themselves counter-productively, some express themselves by lying to push a false agenda(both of these are examples of dicks). there are some dickhead leftists that, fed up with a corrupt system and leaders, resorted to acts of destruction. That so conveniently fits into the PU narrative that they can gloss over the fact there is a huge uptick in right-wing hate crimes and violence. Funny coincidence, but a lot of these PU "profs" are favorite ideologues of these violent pieces of shit. Crazy, but maybe the liars that are willing to spend huge amounts of ridiculous personal fortunes and willing to use false or misleading and misinterpreted facts to convince you that there is a leftist boogeyman coming to burn down your happy american way of life, just maybe, they are being fascistic to confuse, mislead and divide people just to enrich themselves. Go ahead believing the people that are offended by being called fascists, but think socialist is an insult and that leftists are enemies of the state.
      Now, don't take this lightly because I never, ever, ever thought I would utter the 6 words at the end of this sentence, but if you actually read and considered all of this, then I seriously love you Mitch McConnell.

      Josh Stanton Nice takedown of a straw man. Prager University's position isn't that idea of universities is bad, quite the contrary, they believe universities play a very vital role in society. Their argument is that most modern universities are not fulfilling that role because they stifle free thought, encourage bad behavior and generally do not prepare students for the real world. Please try to engage with arguments honestly.

The first video I saw was the one about antifa, and it was a breath of fresh air honestly. I'm so used to just seeing the same re-hashed story in which reporters give their opinion on what the think antifa is rather than what it ACTUALLY is. Like, you don't have to agree with something, but at least try to understand what it fucking is before you write your huffpost article... Sorry, bit of a tangent there. Anyway, the point I'm trying to get at is that I'm glad you're talking about this stuff in a manner that's both accurate AND accessible to liberals (i.e., you talk about far left things without necessarily agreeing with them). It gives me hope that maybe some liberals and centrists will eventually come to understand some of the more nuanced far left ideas, or at the very least just realize that, yeah, the rise of fascism IS a fucking problem. Hey Cody, I was hoping that you would change one minor detail in your videos, but since you haven't I want to note it:
    Please put the stuff you reference in the description (articles, pages, videos). I like your videos and agree with most of the things you talk about, but when I want to personally look into the paper/news article you reference - I can't find it with ease.
    Just a small issue I have, if you do listen to it I'd be super grateful as I feel it would add more legitimacy to your rising channel. Even though there are a lot of jokes in your videos, I think it's obvious that you want to leave your mark/opinion on today's political arena, so I feel citing your sources would be ideal.
    I'm not sure what you think about Phillip Defanco, but he publishes all the sources he uses and I think that's very nice for viewers who want to learn more and confirm the cited material. I hope you agree with that sentiment.

    • @KatyStoll
      @KatyStoll 6 років тому +128

      Thanks for the suggestion. Most of the articles referenced are cited in the video, that's why we go to the trouble of including all our headlines and cite the source so you can google and read more yourself :) It would be a very long list to put in the description. • @saimsuguy
      @saimsuguy 6 років тому +24

      It would be super easy to host a textfile with a list of urls/references for each episode, and put a link to the file in the description (that way it wont clog up the description)
      You guys really should consider doing something like this. This episode talks alot about fact vs opinion, and if you believed strongly in the idea, you would perhaps go through the small task providing the references. I know you provide a picture of the headlines but this makes it a bit more tedious and time consuming to read the source. Making it as easy to access as possible would help encourage people to read up and verify ideas instead of just believing what they see on youtube, the exact issue that causes things like this Prager University to thrive.
      Im not saying its your duty or responsibility, but just that if you did encourage this kind of fact checking that you appear to do yourself and value we could maybe start changing the way people accept information without scepticism. It seems to be important to you guys and I think it would help

    • @johnbliss422
      @johnbliss422 6 років тому +2

      So the presence of the references themselves, clearly delineated and available, is not in line with the idea of facts vs opinion, because it is tedious and time consuming to read the source material?

      There was a clip of some guy pretending to actually drink a cocktail with round-up. It was so bad, that you could see him (in an edited video!) change glasses, and the glasses weren't even the same. People were still sharing that video as proof that you can drink it safely.
      TBH, it will probably won't kill you, but will ruin your health in different ways, and it's specially dangerous during gestation.
      The Argentinian scientist (Dr Carrasco) who was making experiments with glyphosate on frogs, reported a violent intrusion to his lab, threats, and opposition inside the government (Argentina is dependent on soy and other agro exports, and gov was sucking very hard to Monsanto at the time). Sure nothing to worry about.

    • @Henrik_Holst
      @Henrik_Holst 4 роки тому +3

      @@frechjo Sometimes I think that you guys forget that it's a herbicide that we are talking about.
      Even assuming that the 2010 study by Dr Carrasco is true, this still makes Glyphosate far more safer than any other herbicide out there.
      E.g if you would expose yourself or those Argentinian frogs for the organic herbicide s that are used in "ecological farming" such as Copper-sulfate or Nicotine then even a micro dose would straight out murder you.
      So the other alternative is to use no herbicide at all and we as a species have tried that (before the herbicides where invented) with massive world wide famines as the result.

    • @frechjo
      @frechjo 4 роки тому +10

      @@Henrik_Holst
      Even assuming that the studies by Carrasco were fake (why would he do that eludes me), there are other studies, plus independent observations, with similar results.
      Maybe the lethal dose is higher for glyphosate than for other herbicides, but I didn't see anyone arguing about that.
      There are many other ways for it to be dangerous, though:
      -it's likely carcinogenic.
      -it's likely the cause of many congenital malformations (observed in humans and pigs, besides frogs) and abortions.
      -it accumulates in the environment, and finds it's way to water courses, because it's chemically stable.
      -at least associated substances found in Round Up are likely to decompose to carcinogenic substances in the environment.
      -it's not understood the impact it has in human simbionts (intestinal flora), and the repercussions on health.
      -the full metabolic path in the human body is not completely understood.
      Then there are economical reasons against it:
      -it favors monoculture, which is a bad use of the soil (it quickly depletes the ground)
      -weeds develop resistance, so there's a need to increase constantly it's use.
      -it creates dependency, because on a soil contaminated by it, other plants will have trouble growing.
      -it creates dependency to the patented seeds.
      There are many other alternatives proposed and in use. I'm not an expert, but there are natural herbicides/pesticides, which have low environmental impact, no dependence on patented seed, allow rotation of crops, and evolved with our species. And there are other proposed ways to grow food, like permaculture, the Fukuoka style, etc.
      Guilt tripping people to accept being poisoned does no service to anyone. If we care so much about feeding people, we should stop throwing away a third of the food produced.
      I'm not anti GMO on it's own. Let's produce public domain GMOs of plants that resist drought, or adapt to new hostile environments.

    Somewhat tangental, but I saw the "safe spaces" cages, and this needs to be said anyway.
    I am so sick of people being falsely offended by trigger warnings (not triggers. Trigger warnings). Because apparently people with debilitating disabilities like PTSD, anxiety, depression, anorexia nervosa, etc should be de facto barred from public life and access to information. How hard is it to understand that not everyone has had such an ideal life as you have had? How hard is it to use two little words, "trigger warning"? How does this negatively impact your lives in any way?
    It sounds like these assholes just get really uncomfortable being reminded that there is a lot of horrible shit in the world, so they decide to unleash their ire on any vulnerable people they can. How edgy. Do they no understand that by ensuring that people with certain disabilities can't participate in public discourse that they lose out on their precious diversity of thought?

      If I'm watching a youtube video from someone I've never seen before, them using the term "triggered" or "trigger warning" as a joke leads to me instantly clicking away and marking their channel as "not interested."
      As someone who sustained 3rd degree burns in a housefire when I was a kid, it's nice to have a little heads up if I'm going to be walking into a discussion about incidents involving fire. My PTSD is not as severe as it is in other people, so I'm fine to continue watching/listening/reading at that point personally (unless there's video imagery of the event or the immediate aftermath, that's hard for me.) But a content warning helps me steel myself a little and can steer me away from falling into a panic attack. I don't think the (apparently arduous and content-ruining?) task of adding content warning tags is that much to ask for the reward of not inducing panic attacks.

      To the truly entitled - those born to a life of leisure, coasting along on their parents' wealth and/or influence, or just lucking out hard, landing cushy stable jobs off the bat - everyone who works hard for a living, and picks up some scars along the way that they would maybe like a little bit of consideration for, seems entitled.
      It's like some kind of bizarre mirror-projection phenomenon...
      The need for safe spaces is, more than anything, a symptom to me. Not of people being entitled and thin-skinned and pathetic and whatever the red pill assholes and their ilk call it, but of society being broken and people being assholes to one another in public places, has somehow become the norm that everyone is expected to just deal with. Tell you the truth, if there's a zone on campus where people aren't allowed to be assholes, and the rest of campus is a zone where people are free to be assholes... and we have assholes complaining they can't be dicks in the small no-dickery zone that's been set up... that all just shows how far wrong things have gone. Not because people want a safe place, but because there are people who don't want there to be a safe place. Anywhere. Just an all-you-can-abuse hellscape for the bullies to roam free and hurt whoever they like. See the real problem here, people...?
      Also, if a trigger warning can protect someone from having a panic attack, an actual dangerous medical event, or from setting off their PTSD or anything like that, then I'm all for them being there. Just a little warning, preventing suffering? How can people be against that?^^; How entitled do _they_ have to be, to dismiss actual serious conditions like that?!

    I remember I was talking with a kid during debate club about how people react to different ideas. The entire thing culminated in the ultimate facepalm moment when I provided a counter argument to Ben Shapiro's idea that if you hate someone for their political ideas, you are a bad person. The example? A "Free Thinking" kid from back in middle school who had implied that a Muslim friend of mine and their family were terrorists, and that I was some kind of terrorist sympathizer for being friends with them. When I told this story to the other kid in debate club, he actually tried to make the argument that I somehow hated free speech or was too sensitive for merely calling the kid out for being an asshole, and that since his hateful beliefs stemmed from his political ideology, I was, by Ben Shapiro's standards, a bully. Now, I'm not the biggest proponent of "PC Culture" but I didn't realize that apparently calling someone out for being hateful made you into a bully who hates free speech.

    This episode was really good and kicked it out of the park. Going beyond debunking the arguments and showing the ecosystem underneath, the dark money and various interests is extremely important. The arguments are, as the video says, old and have been debunked time and time again. It does a disservice to almost anyone to keep engaging with them instead of pulling over the curtain and showing the men behind it.

      It's already a stretch when you're bringing on campaign finances into a video about a network of political propaganda YT channels and figures.
      Then, the sheer asymmetry of dark money going to republican candidates and causes versus the one going to democrats makes the "both sides" argument disingenuous.

      A very good comparison. Like investors do, the Koch brothers expect to reap some reward from all the money they're pumping in. Shapiro, Rubin, Kirk, Owens could very well be completely sincere in what they're saying and doing. The point is that they are the ones picked up by those billionaires and not Cody or Contrapoints or Kat Blaque because they are the ones who, sincerely or mercenary, are representing the Koch's and Mercer's and Wilks' interests.

    For a "centrist" person just facilitating "the marketplace of ideas", Rubin sure seems to have a disperingly big lot of friends on the far right ...
    The few more left leaning guests on his show are most often just brought in to talk about specific topics were they have more unusually right leaning opinions. When these more left leaning guest lets their more leftward leanings shine through, Rubin now rarely and suddenly interrupts and defends the other side. Important to be balanced, right Rubin !!

    Conservatism is a business model in the modern era. It's based on the idea that a sucker is born every minute. If you can reach a segment of a market that responds viscerally to ideas that really have very little practical value, you might be able to cash in with help from the Conservative "think tanks".
    This isn't just for right wing thought but for some reason, Cons respond well to binary thinking. There are standard hot buttons that set them off and it's easy to jump into the market if you are willing to suspend most of your common sense or morality.
    Since Conservatism is "faith based", there is no need to prove a point with historical information. There is no introspection when comments are offered. That's why it's so easy to pull contradictory evidence to their claims or pronouncements. They see no need to fact check or supply citations. Just posit an idea that sounds plausible to the reptilian brain.
    Leftists who try this strategy don't get as much mileage from their musings because too many people will ask questions or present cogent arguments in response. It's not that Leftists are smarter, it's because they are often nerds who love questioning things.
    The Left's share of binary thinkers seem to be much smaller, but I'm still investigating that. That may also be why there isn't a real equivalent to Fox News on the Left... not a big enough market share willing to blindly accept BS.
    Folks (the majority of the population) who fall in the middle are watching this political fan service with confusion or disinterest. They're like your aunt who can't figure out what the fuss is about with the Black Panther or Justice League movies.
    Modern Cons are not a monolithic group; they are just cult followers of a few fringe theories loosely strung together by Social Media, churches, political groups and radio stations looking top profit off porn political.

    • @DennisFrancispublishing
      @DennisFrancispublishing 6 років тому +21

      I would contend that the Democratic party is painfully devoid of Leftists these days. The parties have moved away from political philosophies and on to Corporatism as a business model while the Churches have always been about network marketing (pyramid scheme).
      When I first got into politics, I was basically a Libertarian. At that time, the thought of Libertarians as Conservatives was moronic. Libertarians would never dream of being against abortion or gay rights. That's anti-freedom. The thought of depriving undocumented aliens of due process and putting them in camps smacks of Nazism.
      The John Birch Society has moved into the ranks of the GOP with lots of cash and joined forces with the mega-church millionaires to form an unholy alliance. It has always been about the money to them. Even the accumulation of power is about maintaining the wealth for as long as they can.
      The Conservatives have made a killing at this because they have a lock on Libertarian billionaires who understand marketing and sales strategies. They have a 30 year head start on communications and proper indoctrination of the working class. The Left is out-gunned and out manned by both Democrats and Conservatives.
      Real Republicans can't even be found in positions of power. They don't have a party anymore.
      The oligarchs and the Churches have buried moderation. They have been silenced even in the corporate media. Two of my favorite books in the last five years are "Dark Money" and "Ratf**ked The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America's Democracy".
      The oligarchy have even taken to the universities by buying into the curriculum with bogus economics studies. But the real coup is the steady integration of their ideology into the judiciary. That multi-decade infiltration program is finally bearing fruit. There is nothing in their ideology that resembles freedom for the majority of Americans.

      "Scientism"? Please explain if I'm wrong here, but...
      It is arguable that science has become a new religion of sorts within certain highly educated, wealthy, upper class urbanites.
      However, that doesn't influence science itself. It's a profession, with very well defined boundaries as to what it can and cannot account for in the daily life of an average person.
      Religion, often nurtured by semi-educated, conservatives from all walks of life, is not like that. Religion is defined by average people. The Pope's stance on religion has not remained static for the past 2,000 years, because all human ideas factor into what religion is seen as and how much it can influence out daily lives. It is more prone to extreme ideological buildup, and inherently more dangerous than science (though that's not to say a scientist can't be dangerous, or a religious person can't be passive).

    • @8bitmagic
      @8bitmagic 5 років тому +5

      C B the difference between the church and science is the church teaches doctorine "this is how things are" science teaches you our best approximated model and gives you tools to perhaps expand our model. Science is not doctorine and is ever evolving when new information is introduced. If it's not doing that it's not science, it's religion. Your comparisons do not hold water to me.
