- The plaintiff says he rented an apartment in a house the defendant said she owned, but she was a fake. The place didn’t even have appliances, and now he can’t even get his rent and security deposit back, and he’s suing. The defendant says the plaintiff is a liar and a squatter. She says he never gave her a penny, and she let him stay at her husband’s house as a favor

my first reaction was that the defendant was a scammer. but, then it seems like the plaintiff is the scammer and is trying to take advantage of her because she's new to being a landlord.
I think that her uncle is either in prison or sick to the point where he's not in the right State of Mind, so she decided to take over a building that he owned so that she can try to collect rent and make herself some money.
Her story is so full of holes and she's being very cryptic. 😂

I luckily had a decent landlord that didn't require everyone who was staying in my apartment to be run through. I was really on the lease. I put down 3 occupants. One for me and my X and then I'd use the spare room to find a roommate to help with bills. Yes always make sure you are legally being subletting to.

The defendant may be somewhat uneducated, but she had a legal power of attorney and I believe she was looking for a good tenant. I believe that he changed the locks on her and hadn’t been paying rent from February to May. I also believe he paid the first month rent in January and for the stove he had a receipt for, but he changed the locks and it couldn’t be delivered. She shouldn’t have tried to kick the door in instead of legally evicting him when he stopped paying rent. That was a big mistake on her part.
The power of attorney was dated the pervious day. So she didn't have power of attorney at the time that she rented the apartment. She keeps saying " he owes ME" not owes my uncle.

Clearly she is new to how rentals works, she doesn’t know the technicalities and to document things. Especially NYC has a lot of renter protections and rules. She probably is running the apartment building for the uncle. The plaintiff seems to be a schemer. He moved in changed the locks but is complaining he doesn’t have appliances.
