7 string Guitar: Pete Smyser | www.smyser.com
Sax: Larry McKenna
Song - an instrumental, duo rendition of the 1930 standard "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)" with lyrics by Al J. Neiburg and music composed by Doc Dougherty and Ellis Reynolds.
Pete is an endorser for American Archtop guitars (Nazareth, PA)
Larry & I were scheduled to perform one evening back in 2016 and were planning to drive together to the venue. As a last minute whim, I suggested to Larry that if he could come over a bit early, we could record some tracks. He agreed that it was a good idea. We recorded a single take of about 8 songs. This is one of them.
Larry & I have recorded a number of times through the years. The first time was in the summer of 2000 on a CD titled Pete Smyser & Larry McKenna. A CD-R is available through Amazon: www.amazon.com/Pete-Smyser-La...

The 11 people who dislike this video fail to recognise pure musical genius at its best. Bravo Larry Mc Kenna!
I played tenor sax for many years and so believe me when I say flat out that this guy is getting the sweetest best out of his sax. He is seriously good.
McKenna absolutely examines the chords to their foundations. Leaves no tone unturned.
Mæstro.
The guitarist is a soloists dream. Provides foundation rhythm, super chordal journey through the tune and doesn't get in the way. and a 7 string guitar....
Two well matched guys
Thanks so much for this comment! I'm glad to hear that enjoyed our recording.
I've said it before no half naked dancing girls no fireworks no auto tune just pure talent get up and play the song no bullcrap.Thank you gentlemen.
Thanks Harvey! I guess I'll go ahead and cancel the half naked dancing girls and fireworks that we had lined up for the next video. So glad to hear that the music, delivered with heart, is enough for you! Cheers!
Haha
Like a gentle lover he merely caresses the keys and they respond Pure genus.
Larry McKenna абсолютное добро. Не "орать", а именно играть, что может быть лучше? Интеллигентнейший музыкант.
Larry McKenna is absolute "good". Don't yell, what could be better? The most intelligent musician.
Согласен. Но если проследить по записям с ним,то он в свои почтенные года может играть и весьма энергично,не всем молодым (а тут попались два ролика,где он играет с другими тенористами) под силу играть так.
RIP Larry 🙏 I love your music.
I’m Confessing that I love Larry playing , only just found him and downloading everything .
Larry is amazing, I agree! We recently recorded some new material (duo and quartet) which should become available this spring. Please keep an eye out for that! Thanks for the comment!

Just lovely, as always!
Mr. McKenna is a gorgeus musician. I listen him to learn how to play well.
At first I wondered who was playing bass and then I saw the extra tuner :)
Gotta love that extra 7th string to carry the bass lines! Thanks for the comment!
Just found Mr McKenna today. Loving it. I’ll be watching and listening to every video I can find of him.

@@PeteSmyser You are welcome. Keep them coming Pete. Not withstanding previous comments you are pretty cool as well. Lovely music,
Will do John. I hope (and plan) to continue with lots of recordings, including plenty with Larry.
Stan Getz lives on!
Indeed!
👏👏👏❤️
Thank you!
Very nice, enjoyed it a lot!
The First among The Best...
Thank you Vladimir!
I love the sax sound! Great master! What type of mouthpiece has he?
Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry but I'm the guitarist, so I don't know what mouthpiece Larry was using.
@@PeteSmyser You guys are great! I thinking myself to do something similar. I’m a guitarist too ,but I playing on sax as a second instrument. Unfortunately that style not so popular this time. I love it.By the way you are great on the guitar. Nice model arch top.
I have an Eastman Uptown, I bought years back in Sherman Oaks Vintage guitar.
Glad you enjoy this style and era of music. You're right it's not exactly "in-fashion" although there are still plenty of folks who enjoy it... particularly those with a few miles on their odometer.
It's not the mouthpiece. It's Larry. Trust me....
beautiful warm sound Larry, is the sax a Dolnet??
How did you get into duo playing? I've been playing duo gigs a bit lately and its really fun, but that 7th string makes it sound incredible!
Glad you enjoyed the video! I started at about 18 years old performing solo and sometimes duo at restaurants. I've always been interested in performing in those settings and embraced the challenge of making the music sound full and complete despite the limitations involved with performing solo or duo. The 7-string extended bass range really helps in those settings!
😀💚🌱🌼
Would love to hear your version of "Deep Purple"
Actually, I have a video of "Deep Purple" on my UA-cam Channel but it is with another saxophonist whose name is Ted Lis. It's here - ua-cam.com/video/s7ndBJL4HnQ/v-deo.html
@@PeteSmyser Thank you, Pete! I will check that out. I just purchased your rendition of "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning"....from your website. My dad (mandolinist) use to play with guitarist Johnny Smith on USO tours while in the service. Your guitar work is reminiscent of all the great classic guitarist then and now.
Thank you for purchasing "In the Wee Small Hours," & thanks also for the nice compliment about my guitar work! Your dad must have been quite an accomplished musician to have performed with Johnny Smith.
@@PeteSmyser Thank you.....I only wish my Dad could have heard you play! If ever you do a concert a bit closer to Phoenix, AZ, I would love to attend your concert.
These guys lack the multiple cigarette butt burns, red wine and pizza topping stains on their shirts to be considered true jazz musicians.
Ok, I'll discuss it with Larry and we'll see what we can do... but besides those visual concerns, I hope you enjoyed the music.
Larry McKenna (sax) & (guitar) Pete Smyser & (bass) Pete Smyser :)
That's right! Thanks Dan!
Hey Pete, would you ever consider putting the un-youtube-compressed audio from these sessions on an EP on bandcamp or similar site? I'd love to have all these takes on my phone and would love to avoid ripping these on a youtube-mp3 site.
Hi Sean. I do have quite a few commercially released recordings, some that include Larry, which are available for digital download through CD Baby, itunes, Amazon, etc. I haven't made the decision to release the UA-cam tracks yet, but might someday. Thanks for the suggestion and for your interest!
Is that a Selmer SBA?
Larry tells me that yes it is a Selmer SBA
@@PeteSmyser I knew it! Here's me playing mine: ua-cam.com/video/elx_U6XvwkI/v-deo.html
I'm confessin' that I love you,
Tell me, do you love me too?
I'm confessin' that I need you,
Honestly I do, need you every moment.
In your eyes I read such strange things,
But your lips deny they're true,
Will your answer really change things
Making me blue?
I'm afraid some day you'll leave me,
Saying "can't we still be friends"
If you go, you know you'll grieve me,
All in life on you depends.
Am I guessin' that you love me,
Dreaming dreams of you in vain,
I'm confessin' that I love you, over again.
Oh! So, that's what they mean when thay say so an so is a real smyser.
Beautiful!
Thanks!
Beautiful
Thanks Anthony!
