Great content! We have a vacant land at southern tableland, and we are starting doing the same thing as you. Your video makes our work much easier! Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Doris 🙂
It's amazing the difference that some gravel can make, will be a great investment. Are you guys fully off grid too?

Great video mate, this has been a (sort of pipe)dream of mine but everyone and their nan complains about having to jump through hoops to keep everything up to code. Subbed, can't get enough of this off-the-grid type lifestyle.

Thanks man! We're currently jumping through all kinds of hoops for the Development Application 😅
It's far from easy but will be so worth it in the end. We'll post a vid all about it once we emerge on the other end

Great video thank you! Also wondering about gravel pricing and how far are you from the quarry that you got it delivered and spreader tipped for only $24 per ton??
Name of quarry? Or name of company you got the gravel through would be greatly appreciated.

@@edgarbleikur1929 cheers Edgar 🙂 this was a couple years back so it'd be 5%-10% more nowadays and the gravel was from Graham's Quarry, they have a fair few locations but for us it was about a 45 minute trip for them.

Apart from all the legal and Environment requirements, did you have to ensure that the driveway was constructed to any guidelines or Australian Standards? If so what guidelines or Australian standards?

There weren't any standards applicable for our overall driveway, except for that apron part that the council came to inspect. They wanted the gravel to be at least 100mm thick.
Having said that, a lot of people in the area have no gravel on their driveways at all, so this kind of work is mostly about personal preference. 100mm is the minimum recommended but now we've learned that it's best to do at least 150mm. More is better than less so that it lasts during really wet times, and so that grass doesn't grow through as it did in some patches for us. That front apron part also needed a pipe underneath it, because the drains along the road ended up washing some of the gravel out too.
Standards would be more applicable if this was a project designed for use by the public for whatever reason, and the driveway was part of the application.
Outside of the complex council stuff, in reality farms are often very old and anything goes, as long as it works. Any gravel is better than none 👍

Great video, what size gravel did you use and are you happy with it?

Thanks! Shoulda mentioned this one in the video, it was sandstone (tough sandstone) road base, up to 40mm in size, with smaller bits up to as fine as sand grade to lock it all together.
Of course the best way to build a road like this would be to start with more coarse material first, and then to top it off with the finer stuff.
For our budget, we are pretty happy with it and has lasted through lots of rain - great not getting bogged!
