They actually recorded this song as a revolt against the academy of country music. When they told George Jones to go home and not perform after they cut his performance down to a minute. Ya just don't do that to a legend. I believe this song won Song of the Year. That shows how powerful it was. During alan ACM performance he sang a few bars of his song and stopped dead only to break out singing George Jones song out of respect for the legend. He then walked off the stage like a Boss.
Like a boss! ❤️
They stand up for Country Music
The murder of the Possum!
That is so awesome ! Good for them!! You don't do that!! Especially to george!!
I'm still shocked he showed up!
I have listened to country since the ‘70s and it just ain’t the same. I still listen to Merle, Willie, George Jones, Alan Jackson.
2 classic country songs that you need to listen to & both are by Hank Williams Jr:
1) "The Blues Man"
&
2) "Mr Weatherman"
Most of today's country music is more like pop music, not traditional. Traditional is the best, I miss it!!
Not even good pop, it’s bad pop.
It isn’t that it is changing, it is because there are now just a few executives dictating what we are to listen too. And it isn’t just country, all the genres are under their power. It kills originality.
I remembered when they sang this on tv. Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and George Jones, 3 of the greatest mentioned in this song. If y'all get a chance, react to a Merle Haggard song. "Mama Tried" and "I think I'll Just stay here and drink" are my favorites, but they're all good. A little bit on his background, He was sent to San Quintin prison in 1957 for petty crimes and was out in 2 1/2 years and in 1972, he received a full pardon from then California governor Ronald Reagan. How glad are us country music fans to have heard his songs.
The woman in the red dress near the end is Lee Ann Womack singing backup. A legend in her own right.
In the 80's there was a return to traditional Country music. Therr was a whole lot of traditional singers that came along. Alan and George are two of them. Although Alan came along at the end of the 80's.
George Strait made it cool to wear Cowboy hats again.
Then as the turn of the century came around Country music started going more, and more pop/rock.
George Strait " The King of Country".
As a 76 year old fan of country music, this song is telling the truth! Go back to 1950 and 1960 country music and you’ll see the difference. Merle Haggard is one of the greatest!
Amen. I'm 46 and I agree. Today's so called country is 99 percent pop garbage.
Here, here!
Yes, I agree. I seen Merle perform live in a bar in Colorado springs in the 90's
This song is a classic! The King of Country and Alan Jackson! Awesome!
Alan Jackson is an awesome singer. Real Country Music is not what they play today.
Back in the 80s country music started shifting into Southern rock... George Strait helped shift it back to a more traditional sound, and since the early 2000s it has started shifting to a southern pop sound, there are many artists and bands that are holding the line, but none as influential as George Strait was/still is.
I like some of the older stuff, and some newer stuff as well. A lot of the radio stations only play the newer stuff. They should play a bit of both. There's room for all of it.
@DeeOhGee74, do not leave out Randy Travis. He is who brought me back to country music.
@@patriciakeith6755 there’s several like Randy in that group of what I’ve heard referred to as ‘neo-traditionalists’.
Strait…he’s got some good stuff, but a lot of his fans just seem to be fans of something easy to grab onto. A lot of them seem like they haven’t really delved into country deep enough, IMO.
Country music has evolved since the beginning but it had kept traditional elements until the last few decades.
You have got to play, George Jones, Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes. Then you got to play, Alan Jackson's, Where Have They All Gone. You will get the true drift of this song.
These two are 100% traditional country. No flash, no dancers, no costume changes. LOL Just them & a guitar & a backup band, standing onstage, in the same spot, until they are done with the performances. It's ALL about the music & the story. Alan actually walked out of a country awards show when Beyonce performed. He said he had nothing against her or her talent, however, he was disgusted with the publicity stunt of the whole thing, chasing the dollar. Also, FYi, 'The Possum' is Geroge Jonse's nickname.
'I Don't Need your Rocking Chair' by George Jones is wonderful.
Amen on all counts
Country music is absolutely a life story and tells a story!! Stand up for it!!!
There may be a reason others arent signing along. They sang this song in front of all the producers and artists that have caused the shift in country music within the last 20 years especially
I love this song from George Strait and Alan Jackson. They tell it like it is.
Two Kings of Country music!
Allen Jackson showed the ACM / CMA that you don’t cut George Jones off the show. He started with his song then cut into singing George’s song. Epic. Look it up.
I never get tired of crying over there will never be another Alan Jackson Jackie McAdams 16
Two amazing, good looking men right there
I agree with everything in this song, and i grew up listening to 70s, 80s , and 90s country and even some older stuff here and there. I am a fan of the old school country but we have to remember that what my generation often calls "real country" was just as unwelcome back in the day. I do enjoy SOME of todays country music....mostly the ones who dont see a ton of radio play because they havent sold out. Some of them used to be more mainstream til this shift began. And some still are but i probably enjoyed some of their earlier songs more than what they are putting out today.
The guy that wrote this song was from Eastern Kentucky and I am to . Absolutely one of the greatest songs ever written.
Actually, now that I think about it, these two legends probably wouldn’t be welcome on Music Row today.
This song is so true, country music hasn’t been the same since the mid 90’s….pop country isn’t country music!! There’s no fiddles, steel guitars, no yodels, no heart
In MY opinion, Garth started the downfall.
@@lilachesniak9687 yes and then Shania, they started the pop country culture 🤢
I grew up on OLD country & have loved it all my life. Will be 63 next month. I think it really started changing the last 10 years or more.
This is epic. The song won Bluegrass Song of the Year. George and Alan's performance was the CMA Performance of the Year and a year later the CMA Song of the Year, despite not being released as a single. The line, "cut out its heart and soul" pretty much sums it up.
I had not seen a friend of mine for several years, I bumped into him recently, he said to me bro, I remember you always jamming on country music, he always listen to new wave rock. He said bro I got to tell you I love country music, he said that’s all he listens to. He said he loves it he further said what was I thinking .
Seb, this is why you must discover The Outlaw Movement of the 70’s lead by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. So many artist have left Nashville and its over produced music, creating their own Independent record labels/recording studios.
Keep going with George Strait and Alan Jackson…forever Traditional!
Two absolute GREATS in Country Music…it took icons such as these to have the balls to sing a song such as this!
While I agree somewhat with what they say, I happen to subscribe to the school of…there’s room for everybody! It’s NOT an either/or situation!!!
I can love listening to Strait and Jackson and still love Hardy and Wallen too!!!
I really agree with your comment. I love the old classics to no end but some of the new stuff is pretty darn good. Like all things in life there is a bit of evolution to it whether we like it or not.
All have their place and to be honest there are a few artists out there who still record traditional style country music. If we want to see its popularity come back then we need to support those artists and help cause a redirection so to speak.
You mentioned Hardy in your comment and I got to see him live at a music festival last year and was blown away by his talent. Plus he's such a fantastic songwriter.
I love a mix of both styles. More than that I love these two singing together.
Classic country music by classic country music men!
I think it's less about the rock and pop elements of the newer country music, but the loss of the powerful, substantive lyrics. The "outlaw" movement in the seventies rejected the extremely traditional country style of the sixties and incorporated elements of rock and blues, and those singers and their songs are country classics. But while the sound was different, the substance was there. There was a message. Powerful themes.
There is a place for lighthearted, fun songs, but the corporate side of the music industry can lose sight of the substance in the music in favor of a bunch of singers with all the same sound, all the same look, and no real message.
There is room for a lot of different sounds and influences in country music as long as it has heart and soul and doesn't crowd out the rest of the various styles. 😊
A fine example of "Twin fiddles" a Texas staple. A gift from Mexico.
It's LeeAnn Womack singing harmony. She sang on the original album cut. You should check her out. By the way, I love that you love Conway. He is my all time favorite.
I love George strait songs Jackie McAdams 16
That is exactly right. They don’t use steel guitar and fiddles like they did.
Great song by two great artists. Thank you, George and Alan, for all of your efforts to keep traditional country music alive.
I don't listen to today's "country music". If I want pop, rock or rap (NEVER rap), then I can listen to it. But when I listen to country, I want country, not the stuff they are producing today.
You’ve yet to discover:
Merle Haggard - Sing Me Back Home (live)
Waylon Jennings - Ramblin’ Man
This song is both figurative and literal. In 1982 a young man was killed on 16th Avenue. He was about to blow the whistle on chart manipulation and payola. It was several years before the murder was solved.
The only two artists who could have sung that sing, at that time in country music. Love me some Possum.
Alan Jackson from Newnan, Ga where I live. He is an absolute country music icon. George Strait is an icon too.
Good back story to that 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🧐👋🎶💕 love watching both of you and your wife's reactions 😊
Always good to hear King George and Alan!!! Love this song!!!! Anything by The King is awesome and amazing And Alan is always great too!!!!!
Speaking of Hank. You need to listen to “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank Williams SR one of the founders of country
The first time they performed this song was on the stage at a country music award show. Did you actually stop and just imagine that today? Two of the biggest names in country music singing a song about how the record labels and producers are killing traditional country music. To write a song against Nashville and the record producers saying that it's no longer about talent and traditional instruments while standing on an awards stage in front of them. I think most singers would be too afraid of the repercussions but I think it made them more popular with people like me
The possum was George Jones nickname
I Love the fact you gave country a chance. Love your videos!❤
omg.. YOU'VE got King George and Alan Jackson... WTF.. this is amazing...
Oh yeah, im here for this one 😁🥰❤️🔥 Sebs, for what its worth, i didnt care for country music much either. Then i heard Chattahoochee not long after it came out in 1992 (Alan Jackson). Been hooked ever since 😉❤️🔥
I love this song and so true
Beautiful simply beautiful song great song
Awesome Larry Cordle tune.
And Awesome video it was, Performed by two of the best Country Legends 👍👍👍👍👍
They were trying to "POP" the country sound, removing fiddles and steel guitars. The Academy snubbed George Jones (The Possum) and wouldnt let him perform his song at the ACMs. Alan started his so g and switched to George's song!!
This is a literal protest against the whole country music radio and recornding industry....... The powers that be wanted SHOWIER artists an true talent was being ignored
Great song sung by 2 amazing singers!
There has been a serious shift in Country Music over the past 5-7 years…and there is a new faction currently which is popular along with the ones you’ve been listening to and loving. But they are really singing about the other current faction that has been totally “popified” and borderline rock in some cases…that the labels and such are pushing in the industry. A major divide…I can’t even listen to half the new stuff…snap-tracks and all sorts of other changes.
Fortunately we still have hundreds of great ones for ya Sebs!
Or rap infused 🤢
5-7 years. Lol. No. Classic Country music was attacked way longer than that. In my opinion...it happened around 1990. And here we go...I'll probably get hell for this, but 2 of the biggest culprits are Garth Brooks and Shania Twain. The list goes on though....
@@anthonygeurtsen7143 - but that music isn’t the big problem…it’s the stuff being pushed by the labels for the past 5-7 years that really is. Even AJ has put out plenty of the Country music you are indicating. It’s the more recent snap-track trash that is the real issue. Peppy, upbeat, and other more rock/pop isn’t the even the problem.
And I don’t even think that King George and AJ would say so. They also don’t expect Country to be the form we had from the 20s-70s. The problem is the overproduced, snap-track type garbage that doesn’t even attempt to relate or connect to Country’s famous “Three chords and the Truth” roots.
Listen to Merle Haggard he's very old school. Also Dwight yokam. This guys are old school as well
I love old traditional country, but I love the outlaw country more! When they started bringing pop and rap into country, that’s where they lost me. I feel like it has lost it’s soul. Every now and then I hear a new song that gets me excited, but not very often.
Bro PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE feature some more Brad Paisley on your channel!!! He's the best guitar player in country music hands down!
Agreed. I would love to see him react to Mr. Policeman from Brad paisley. I think he would really enjoy the musical talent coming from that track in particular. It’s also one of Brad’s funnier ones and it sounds like Seb would definitely enjoy some more funny country on the channel.
Country music doesn't chase audiences. In the dark times, we find it. That is til they killed it. Like everything else today, these kids don't even know what they are stomping to death. Some jerk in a suit convinced them that they are part of a proud tradition. They aren't.
I. LOVE. COUNTRY. MUSIC. !!! There may be a song or artist here or there that I don’t care for but that’s why they make volume controls and power buttons! It’s like parents having a new baby. You don’t love your other kids any less, your love just grows exponentially to love the new one in it’s own right. Having said that, I do stand firmly with Alan and George’s statement about the ‘industry’s’ motives and practices. You can’t disrespect those who blazed the trail just for a buck but they do it every day. Not a big fan of the ACM or the CMA. Thankfully there are those who will never let tradition die! 🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶
I like the old and new but the steel guitar is something I really miss in today's cojntry
Love love love George Strait. He's the reason i got into country music. I prefer traditional country and before George it was country pop.
CW music is no longer "country" - it is more rock/hip hop/middle of the road instead of 3 chords & great lyrics.!!!! My late husband was a songwriter back in the 70-80's & we lived on Music Row - songs were simple & soulful - Now it is just like any other genre!!!! Long Live Willie, Waylon & Kris & Johnny!!!! Long Live Hank Jr!!!
Good reaction. Music is a beautiful thing, I love the old country (listen to it most ) but I like some of the new as well, we can like it all.
Love your videos but thank u for listening to some real country. Today's "country " radio is nothing more that pop music with a twang for the most part
Keep authenticity in Country!!
This song is slamming the music companies and what they’re doing to the music.
#HailYes Luving that you are now a #CountryBumpkin
Nothing wrong with change, BUT you can't forget who you are!
Actually Outlaw Country was invented as a protest to the rigidity of the "Nashville Sound" 50+ years ago. Outlaw Country is anything but traditional. That's why Bocephus sings, "I am very proud of my daddy's name. Although his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same."
Your comment describes what I was wanting to comment. I love Waylon Jennings, but he wasn't exactly traditional himself. He, Willie, Johnny and Kris together were not really traditional either, so the changes being made to traditional country were happening even back then. I like the traditional country music the best, but I still love Waylon and the Highway Men. But beyond that, the more traditional I can get it, the better. The big thing is whether or not I can hear the fiddles, the acoustic guitar and steel guitar. If you get too many electric guitars in there, the fiddles, acoustic guitar and steel guitars get drowned out. I can handle an electric guitar if it isn't drowning out the fiddles, acoustic and steel.
Love them both
I love you too Jackie McAdams 16
This song I still very relevant.. Though now they also mix 808 beats right up in your face.
16th Avenue in Nashville is known as Music Row.
These guys are unbeatable. They were calling for people to remember when country had more to say than just drinking and hooking up. In the last verse where they sing that even the Possum has been told to pack up and go back home - Possum was George Jones's nickname, and his performing spot was rescinded on one of the awards shows in favor of a pop artist. Alan, who did perform, in the middle of his own song stopped and switched to George's song that was pulled. Then he walked off stage and out of the building. The music has sold out to the pop side to scoop in younger audiences who haven't been bought up with the traditional legends. This song is their protest.
Whos gonna fill their shoes by George Jones. Thats a great one to go with this
You would like Brooks & Dunn as well I think.
Peace, Love!!
They are talking about the death of old time country music, and I agree, the new country songs suck
I agree with the gist of this song 100%, today's country is mostly just yesterday's pop music! Bro pop sucks!
The Possum is George Jones nickname.
For sure Country Rock has replaced Country Western as far as popularity but the old songs are still amazing
I wish you'd react to I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry or Ramblin' Man both by Hank Williams.
On a different note... King George looks so small next to Alan... Because Alan is like 6'5
They did their best with the cameras, but they couldn't hide just how crazy tall Allen Jackson is especially beside George Strait, who isn't really that short. He's probably my height five ten
Need to hear who is going to fill their shoes
Mo Pitney
SO very TRUE boys
And George Strait is the most handsome man God ever put on this earth! Just sayin...
Lol!! Very Handsome yes, but I still don't believe there is or was a man more gorgeous than Elvis Presley.
Calm down, it'll be alright, breath.
@@CodyCloudWalker Lol!!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. They have killed country music
A few years back at one of the main Award show some reason some one had Beyoncé and the Dixie chicks, singing and playing together. Beyoncé could have been nude if I her dress fit. So about a fourth Way into their song Alan Jackson got up and walked out, and a lot of other people followed him.
I have just about quit watching the country music award shows. They are crap
I dont know when this event happened but it may have been At a time in George Jones life when he had a drinking proble. He would show up late or not at all.He got the nickname "No Show Jones". When he did show he was more than likely still drunk and performances weren't the best. That maybe why they cut his time.
Cma is the issue. Once Viacom bought cmt country music went away. Change happens, it’s changed since Ernie ford to Alan Jackson but the basics have been the same until the mid 90’s and it’s gotten worse
Country has pretty much been ruined with the swifties and such.
AMEN!!
True story music row, 16th and 17th Avenue. Nashville i'm a song writer the labels started Recording more pop, Jelly roll😮
The same thing happened to good ole fashion rock n roll...
Funny thing about life, "progress" seems to eat at it like a cancer...
Do Darryl Worley i miss my friend video
