A fusion arrangement of the music from the final main story boss in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky.

Here it is. We've made it. After six years, this rearrangement project has finally reached /the/ defining piece of music from PMD. I'm sure that this is a rite of passage for remixers that step into the PMD circle, and I'm glad to offer my contribution to the bottomless pile of Primal Dialga arrangements!!!
Jokes aside, Primal Dialga does deserve its praise. It sort of subverts your expectations of what a final boss theme should be. For one, it's not so hectic or intense as you might expect - hell, the regular boss battle track is more fierce than it - it's more so stately and maybe a little sombre. I think it's the relatively slower-moving rhythm combined with the "chorus" 's soaring, stretched-out restatement of the Time Gear motif that gives this feeling. The Time Gear motif is also harmonised with fifths, a rather striking choice that creates this really cool and imposing feel. I feel that Primal Dialga is not so much concerned with being a high-stakes, frantic battle theme, but instead a "This is it; there's no going back" battle theme, with a sense of finality and acceptance.
Speaking of which, that's a lie, because you can actually surrender for a bit and return to Treasure Town to recoup, which is exactly what I did because past-me-from-four-years-ago did a terrible job of prepping for this half of the game. It was worth it though. I had cyndaquil relearn smokescreen, which I got rid of for some reason, despite it being super overpowered. I stocked up on reviver seeds and status-boosting moves too. I managed to beat Dialga on the second attempt after a battle that lasted... about as long as this arrangement, actually. lol.
This video breaks conventions for the project because it's the first time I'm only making a reduced score - I think over the last year I've been shifting away from making sheet music and working entirely in DAWs - I think it's a natural progression for the series, and I may stray away more from sheet music for future videos. I'm also free to do a bit more experimental stuff like the downsampling effects, so it opens up a lot more possibilities!
This is part of my Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers - Re-scored project, otherwise known as PMD: ExR. It's where I attempt to re-arrange all of the music in the Explorers games (and a few extra) in mostly chronological order!

@@arc_4543 unfortunately I think it's very unlikely I'm able to get these arrangements to distribution services cos the PMD soundtrack hasn't ever got an official release before, so I can't get a license (which is also probably quite expensive even if I can)
Though I've never had experience with putting non-originals on Spotify and the like.

SDVX is a different beast though, no official level editor, and I’d have to get a sdvx controller if I’d want to test it. Plus I’m not good enough to chart it for all difficulties hehe
I don't know if it's on purpose but the confidence of the partner pokemon shouting versus the unease of the Trutwig looking up at Dialga and back at his partner comes off as him knowing what will happen once the battle is over which is an amazing detail

This has to be up there as one of the most unique Primal Dialga remixes ever made. From the energetic jazzy like progression, the alternation between styles, the ronald jenkees-esque synth at the beginning... It really has it all, 10/10!

it's cos most of it isn't quantised 100% to the beat oops.
might be better to lean more into the drum or bass line for that half
@@FiveNineSquared problem isn't the quantization (i didn't even notice it lol), it's the pauses that screw me up because with them i can't just spam the same thing throughout the solo (it took me like half an hour just to map it without the special effects)
also due to how the game works the glitch was kinda hard to do and then sync it up but eventually i managed to do it well

The best parts are almost untouched, and when touched, they get upgraded

What a GORGEOUS and creative remix of Dialga's Fight to the Finish!! I love your take on it! It's got a sort of funk style to it, and it really is a thorough rearrange and not just a cover, and I respect the hell out of that.
This is probably the most underrated Fight to the Finish remix ever, I hope this blows up at some point
Also, i like the small detail in the pixel art that Turtwig is uneasy during the fight because they know what's going to happen next

I must say, I wasn't it really feeling it until I got to 0:47 (which is by far my favorite part of the song), and I REALLY like what you did to it. It sounds different, but still keeps that nostalgic and somewhat painful feeling the original had to me.

While I think I do prefer the full sheet music, I do really like the reduced score, it gives you more creative freedom to make a cool video while still giving the viewer some music to read along with. Though, my lack of jazz experience shows when reading and playing all those chords hehe

This has got to be one of the best remixes of any video game song!
Each section is so distinct, yet is tied together so well by the theme. I especially love how each time the main melody plays, it's always different. Those triplet hits at 4:45 are SO GOOD. The whole chaotic vibe works so well with the jazzy syncopated stuff. That keyboard solo was absolutely FILTHY. I appreciate the sheet music to follow along to! I'm trying to get better with soloing and using spicier chords lol.
I'm also a sucker for leitmotifs and references like that. I caught:

3:53 - Temporal Tower, Sky Tower, Guild/Ending Theme
4:51 - Through the Sea of Time

I absolutely love this.
My first go at this boss, I was Shinx and my partner was Turtwig. You may know that these two have somewhat limited movepools. So limited, in fact, that neither can learn a super effective attack against Dialga. However, knowing slightly more than nothing about the game when I played it, I brought every Reviver Seed I had, having saved them up throughout literally the entire game (being my first playthrough, though, it only amounted to about ten. And I was level 40, max. For reference, in my latest playthrough, I had twenty and was level 50). Also in my latest run, I brought a couple Violent Seeds for my partner Mudkip so he could spam Hydro Pumps, completely forgetting that he knew Dig-but he remembered, and managed to get one hit off for 400 damage. Fun fact: Dialga has more than 400 hp! Good thing I brought a page of Reviver Seeds, because the literal next hit he one shot me with a Roar of Time (he missed Mudkip, though, who didn’t die throughout the entire fight, but only got that one hit off because of Intimidator being a stupid).
Ah yes the full bag of reviver seeds strategy.
I'm surprised you were able to hit a 400 dmg move on dialga... I guess the level helps. I was only at level 40+ and most of the work was with cyndaquil and smokescreen lol. Also helps to force your partner to only use one of its moves per turn so you can sorta control them manually too.
Being turtwig is a pain tho youre right, no good attacks at all against Dialga.
i got turtwig as well, i used up all my reviver seeds in temporal tower so i had to fight dialga at level 35 with zero reviver seeds (i didn't know you could go back) so i resorted to this process: stun dialga, eat violent seed, go to the bottom, throw sleep seed, spam bullet seed
multi-hit moves are op lol
@@somerandomguy-3102 See that’s a great strategy but on my first run I didn’t know about multi-hit moves, so Turtwig’s moveset was this: Energy Ball, Giga Drain, Synthesis, and Crunch. I’m…not too proud of it.

Mr. Genius Healing Master apparently knew that the best time to use Synthesis was when he was down 2 HP AND AT NO OTHER TIME, and of course the usual type effectiveness struggles partners tend to have.
But then there was Mudkip, who I had to bring to both Drenched Bluff and Craggy Coast, which have Shellos and Gastrodon, which have Storm Drain. This. Stupid. Dude. Would not stop hitting them with enough water to flood downtown Seattle.

Played around with the time signatures for the first 'verse' parts, yup! I think this took about a month or two? The initial section right before letter A was written like a few months beforehand (as a throw-away thing) though.
I got this game for my 4th or 5th bday and beat it when I was 5 😭

From what I'm hearing listening to the soundtrack, Rivals definitely leans into 80s jazz fusion/synthpop which would be the same genre this falls into!

I was actually mistaken - the main melody (originally the B section from Time Gear) is just shockingly close to the B section of Chrono Trigger Main Theme (I think it’s also in Scars of Time and the main melody of Fields of Time from Chrono Cross). But you’re right, the Time Gear descending pattern also sounds super similar to Trigger (and kind of like the main Mystery Dungeon theme?). Anyways, incredible work. Favorite fan remix I’ve listened to for any game, absolutely astounding
