Live15 mins from the Rockies. I have an Amateur Tech license and own dual band radios but my extended family is not interested in studying/taking a test. We off road, UTV and dirt bike. GMRS is wonderful for this clan. I just used my KG-1000 in the truck today powered by a battery box and mag mount antenna and will use the same setup in the UTV. 👍 on the radio.

One word about the back order. I ordered my KG1000g yesterday. (3/24/22). I received a tracking number this afternoon. (3/25/22)
A Buddy at work ordered his two weeks ago, and had his radio in hand in 6 days total. Great customer service, IMO.

My amigo - Just got my GMRS license and ordered my radio!! I really appreciate your vids on the various radios. It really helped me make a good purchase. Look forward to chatting with you in the Phoenix area. Well im in south Chandler so not sure unless there is a repeater up in that cluster on South Mountain.

Thanks, glad we could help! As far as repeaters from Chandler, I'd be looking at the North Phoenix 625, Shaw Butte 725 and, if you can reach it, The 575 on Towers Mountain! All of these repeaters and their tones are available on www.mygmrs.com.

I had one of these in my truck for about three weeks. I bought it and then tested for my ham license about a week later so I sold it and replaced it with it's identical twin ham brother. Fantastic radio though. I was hitting a repeater in downtown Oklahoma City from about 40 miles away with very little white noise on transmit or receive. The built in speaker in the mic was a HUGE selling point for me. Most other radios that have a detachable face, once you mount the base unit you can't hear the speaker so you have to buy an external... NOT WITH THIS GUY

I’m running the Midland MTX575 and while I think it’s well made, I wish it had the channel capacity to save the all the repeater channels, each with all of the possible tones.
It appears there are 56 (?) tones, so one could program all 8 repeater channels with all 56 tones, using less than half the available channel memory.
    Impressive.

Can you select CTCSS codes in the radio (I believe it's known as privacy tones?) Or do you have to program each privacy code into one of the slots via PC? I didn't see it in the manual unless I skipped it without realizing.

These GMRS radios will not survive the desert southwest heat 110-120F (inside a car goes beyond that). My xs20g did not make it this summer. If your car is parked in direct sunlight or not always on the road, then I recommend taking the radio off in the car when not in use. Unhooking the radio may be a hassle but you may extend the life of it. I decided to order the new KG-1000g plus. I will be taking better care of it this time.

I have a question ... I have several radios but I've had the KG-1000G from BTWR about 2 months now. When I first got it it pumped out 48.87 watts and now its barely putting out 40 watts. My VSWR is running about between 1.2 - 1.3 : 1. Why did the power drop, any idea or should I call BTWR and see what they say ? It is a decent radio other than that and has excellent Rx but the Tx has dropped off for some reason. I have several 40 watt radios and 20 watts and a dozen HTs or more I need the 50 watts because of location I don't need another 40 watt radio. This isn't a hobby, we live on a huge farm. We used to use a VHF system but that was taken out by a lightning strike several years ago, so we're converting everything over to GMRS .

I'm still running a mag mount on the roof and then brining the cable in through a gap in the weather stripping on the A-Pillar. It was supposed to be the short term solution, I've just been too lazy to properly mount it. I think long term, I'd like to mount a good antenna either from the rear door or the front bumper like the Aussies do.

I would say that would depend on if you want to use repeaters, or just talk car to car on simplex. If it’s the former, it’s worth learning the programming. I’ve found the most painless way to do it is via the computer and it’s always worth buying the programming cable. If you just wanna talk simplex, this is probably overkill and you truly would be better served with a less feature intensive and less expensive radio.

I used to have a video up that was really not that complementary to the MTX500, but I took it down as it was definitely one of those, “if you can’t say nothin’ nice…” moments that really made me look like an a-hole. What I can tell you is this, if you are planning on getting into the repeater game and want a radio with a ton of functionality for that, the KG-1000 is where it’s at. Aside from a higher waterproof rating and the fact that it comes with an antenna, there’s not a lot the Midland has that the KG doesn’t, and until their most recent firmware upgrade allowing for multiple repeater/tone combos, it was by far the inferior choice in my opinion.

Wouxun makes great radios, there's no denying that. My only wish is that they would be a little more generous with the display, maybe similar to my Uniden SDS100 scanner. Sometimes 8 or 9 characters just isn't enough. If I could put more info in about each channel, I wouldn't need to keep that spreadsheet on my phone.
For instance, if there were enough real estate to put in SWCRS or AZGMRS, followed by the repeater name, that would be quite handy. Also, not having to abbreviate the name of the repeater would be most helpful.

Have2, neither will transmit over a couple of miles if you are using a channel on the B (right side if looking at radio),it will receive normally, and IS set to high power forTX. .The A side works as it should both TX and RX. Does same on both simplex, and repeaters. Have checked all settings and have even gone back to factory settings tried it . Same problem. For all I know, maybe it isn’t supposed to TX the same on both sides. Nothing in the instructions cover it that I have found. Of course if you only use one side , it’s a great radio.
My ham radio is a kenwood TM-V71A dual band , setup with 2 sides that can be used UHF/UHF ( of course it won’t do the gmrs freqs). Both sides are exactly same TX power and RX. Which is what I expected with the Wouxun WHAT am I doing wrong???

    • @MattKester

That's interesting and I'm going to look into it with mine and see if I can replicate it. I wonder if anyone else out here is having the same issues? I just tried a google search of it and didn't see any threads with the same issues. Have you tried reaching out to Buy Two Way Radios? I just got the email. I'm working on a summary right now, I'll definitely be sure to include that tidbit because I honestly didn't even think about it!

@@MattKester I called them, they can't add a dim function, apparently because it would require a hardware change. Strange.

@@donmontalvo1 Makes sense. After reading the release, it seems like the only physical changes were labels on keys, which isn't that hard to do, you just order keys with a different character screened on them. I'd imagine that dimmer required something to be built into the circuitry of the radio, and that might not have been cost-effective. Still, it's a huge pain in the ass for anyone who mounts it facing them directly. I was fortunate in where I was able to mount it in the disco that it wasn't hitting me directly in the eye at night.
