Yup- those trucks are ugly, terribly designed pieces of crap. That is exactly how I would describe the 97-02 light duty ford’s. The 03-09 trucks are slightly less ugly and even more terribly designed. If it wasn’t for the 7.3 powerstroke in the super duty chassis I would say that ford hasn’t made a good pickup truck since 1996.
I'll still see my fair share of these on the road today. Typically rusted out and with hundreds of thousands of miles but still going strong. Even though this will never happen again but I enjoy the smell of older diesel pickups. Back in the 2000s when diesels were becoming more popular I would always be reminded of their presence with their strong diesel fumes and loud engine idles. Nowadays diesels run so efficiently and quietly and they don't smell anymore. I'm sure it's not healthy to smell that anyway but it gives that little bit of nostalgia.

I too miss the early 2000's. Before all the technology and BS. The 7.3 powerstroke will be one of the best ever in my opinion. Now days you have to worry about cam phasers and bad torque converters and turbo coolant leaks on some ford motors. They run great but have flaws.

Holy crap! I wish you could still get 3/4 and 1 ton trucks in the very low $20K range. Those were Camaro Z/28 and Mustang GT type prices back in the late 90's/early 00's. I remember PSD trucks in the 03/04 timeframe commanding over $50K in crewcab/4x4 trim and thinking how ridiculously expensive trucks had gotten.
I guess I'm the 400 like on this video. Yes I am a 7.3L Superduty owner 1997 F-Superduty F450 Quigley 4x4 extended cab Dually service truck (15000 GVWR) and a 2000 F350 4x4 Quad Cab Dually (11200 GVWR) that was originally a Dually pickup but the bed rotted out (Upstate NY, NJ, PA, and MD) and one of the previous owners built a 10 ft Flatbed on it. I had a lot of work done to it had the custom flatbed shortened from 10ft to 8' 8" and added a B&W Gooseneck hitch, New Class V Receiver Hitch and Tractor Supply Tool Boxes underneath the bed and added a heavy duty steel rear bumper with fold down steps so I can get up in the bed of the truck. Oh and I also added 5" dual stacks that come up through the bed to a Y right behind the headache rack. still need to replace the rusty oil pan as those are all know to rust out and I have previously tried patching it several times.
5:00 That's really neat that you could get a power-take-off port on the automatic transmission. That makes it a lot more versatile for whatever you would need to use it for. Normally if you're going to convert a newer pickup to a winch truck then you have to make sure it's a manual. The port would be so handy on some of the GM transmissions when converting the pick-ups to winch/boom trucks.

The base price of a new 4x2 F250 is $39,445. I would argue that prices have risen because of options. A F250 work truck cost half the price of a typically optioned vehicle. Is that Ford's fault or the customer's?

Why was the GCWR on these trucks limited to 20,000 lbs? A v10 250 had a higher tow rating than a diesel dually in some configurations due to it being a lighter truck.
A lot of diesel trucks were/are rated lower than the same truck configured with a gas engine due to the weight of the diesel engines. I can pull 10k with my 99 F250, but 16k with a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch. some of the ratings are based on what the hitch was rated for...Class 3 hitches were only 10k back then....there are class 4 hitches now....cab and bed configurations, 2WD/4WD, short bed, long bed, base model, Lariat model, payload package options, etc. all play a role in the capacities....I think back then too, the numbers were based on GVWR laws possibly.
24 grand? One of these in mint condition low miles would go for 12 grand 22 years later. I thought man these things are gas hogs way back then. Drove many of them at work. Ford junk. The 5.4 in these trucks was so underpowered for the class I have no idea why they offered it other than the fact that Ford was screwed at this time with no bigger displacement V8s, forcing people into the also doggy and inefficient v10. Only way to go was the 7.3 power stroke. One of the best engines Ford has offered in the last 30 years, partially because the designed obsolescence Ford is famous for wasn't in it due to it being a Navistar design.
Completely agree. The v10 was a pretty strong engine but a dodge v10 got similar mileage and would run circles around the ford. They are also oversized and overly complicated because of the stupid OHC design. Overhead cams do not belong anywhere near a pickup truck engine. I’m actually in the process of removing a v10 out of a super duty at work right now because the dipstick rotted in half and the dipshits at ford decided to put it behind the oil cooler and behind the motor mount so there is no way to drill out the dipstick hole with the engine in the chassis. It’s funny how it’s always ford that is doing stupid shit like that.

My employer had bought around 100 of the 1997 F250s which with the 1998’s were the only years to share that particular body style with the F150, they are a bit of a rare find nowadays.
Would've been nice if they made the f150 with the super duty body style, these look more tough
K-Ci and Jojo coming over the radio! NOICE
Yep!
Ha, he thought that back in 99?!!!! I would love to hear his thoughts today!
I remember getting one of these at work I mean it was the F-450 service body bucket truck but that was the best work truck I ever had with the 7.3 power stroke. I say the best but the 95 F-350 7.3 bucket truck was pretty good also.
Great video have a 01 with a 5.4 406,000 and counting, original engine 2nd transmission, also have a 02 350 with the 7.3 149,000 bought it new have had very few problems with either one of them
Wow, you are one of the very lucky ones to get that kind of mileage out of a 5.4! I can’t even begin to tell you how many sub 200k mile 5.4’s I have replaced for various reasons, whether that be in the 150’s or the super duty’s.
Ever heard of inflation? It's had a huge effect in the last 25 years
@@jacobfleming565 inflation? Please explain. What are inflations?
My dad owns several 7.3 PSD's ford's and they are reliable as hell!
My daily is an 04 250 6.0 lariat 4 door. I love it.
Dodge offered that as far back as 1994 m. Y. Actually, it was standard on Ram 2500-3500. I have one on my 2001 Ram
Is that a regular cab short bed super duty at 5:47 ?
It is, but it was an edited photo. They cut out the supercab cab portion.
Exactly what I was reading comments for haha! Good catch!
My 1999 f-250 175000 miles and not a darn thing wrong with it ! FORD a real truck
1999 F-250, 7.3 supercab shortbed, 260,000 runs like a FGIN Gladiator. Zero rust, white with silver rockers and Alcoa wheels, never selling this truck.
i like those 90s interiors much better than the ones today with all the screens all over the place with fake shifters and E brakes
3:06 that 90s ford chime is embedded in my brain, an reminds me all the failed transmissions , ahhh i miss my escort, contour n Taurus
1999 7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel
235 hp 500 ft lbs
2021 3.5 ecoboost v6
400hp 500 ft lbs on 87 octane.
Crazy how far engines have advanced
Yeah but the power stroke is getting better mileage under load, lasting longer and it’s making those number lower in the rev range
the 7.3 diesels are so reliable they can go 100's of thousands of miles, used 20+ year old trucks cost a fortune because people know they are legit
3:08 I have a question I have a 2000 crew cab why does t mine have thid
Recently got a 2000 5.4 V8 XL single cab + 8’ bed MINT from an old guy. 90,000 miles, single owner, not a single scratch on it.
Absolute dream to drive. And the truck doesn’t blink with a load of lumber in it. Incredible trucks
I can just imagine this narrator saying “Hate changing spark plugs? With the 5.4 liter 2 valve engine you won’t have to! The spark plugs will relocate themselves into the underside of your hood!”
you could get a 4x4 superduty in 1999 for under 25k adjusted for inflation thats still only 44k for a 4x4 super duty is great cuz they are double that today!!!
Ya it's a total rip off scam
@@stevenbrooks1243 yeah i don’t really think you can call yourself a man if you need to spend double n the samething to feel better about yourself! our culture is so obsessed by status that these idiots will spend 100k on the same ruck 20 years ago was less than half even adjusted for inflation! the only features that i would really want on a luxury car/truck would be sun roof, heated/ac seats, and 4x4. thats all id care to have in as far as comefort features!
The base price of a new 4x2 F250 is $39,445. I would argue that prices have risen because of options. A F250 work truck cost half the price of a typically optioned vehicle. Is that Ford's fault or the customer's?
@@davidmitchell7183 I’d say both ford is going to give them what they want! If I owned a business and someone wanted to give me more money I’m not going to tell them no. They realize that they can keep raising the price and ppl will keep paying. All I ask is they have a classic package that gives you the basic 4x4 work truck for under 30k. It really wouldn’t be that hard just to test the market.
@@mromatic17 Truth is that the manufacturers are selling $80,000 trucks as fast as they can make them at the moment. Give Ford a little credit for the Maverick. It probably isn't enough for you but it would work for a lot of buyers.
That's a good looking truck
Why was the GCWR on these trucks limited to 20,000 lbs? A v10 250 had a higher tow rating than a diesel dually in some configurations due to it being a lighter truck.
I believe that was the strength of the parking pawl in the transmission, or maximum weight the parking break was rated for.
I love that ford gave f150 n f250 difference fronts unlike chevy n ram
agreed
Great trucks I’ve owned 3 of them 7.3 baby
That engine is a legend in automotive history.
1999 f-250 4wd 7.3 still going strong.
24 grand? One of these in mint condition low miles would go for 12 grand 22 years later. I thought man these things are gas hogs way back then. Drove many of them at work. The v10 could get up and go though. They were meant for work. Still see them these days tested time with miles and beat up. I went with a ranger back then, because these were huge. The new trucks today are still built and havent deviated much from the ford look, but expensive. The new Chevy trucks look like a vaccum cleaner.
W video with W trucks
Trucks should be no frills and for work uses only. There are too many truck bros on the road.
Today these trucks are selling for 30 to 40 thousand....with over quarter million miles
Undeniably one of the best trucks ever made!
7.3 super duty with a 6 speed a working man's pick up I know I own one
thats a good combo 👌 is it 4x4 as well??
@@gilldaking unfortunately not my 7.3 truck my 6.0 is I bought the 7.3 cause it was low miles and a good deal I actually don't mind it being a 2wd it's a SC SB I use it as a daily driver it's just kinda fun rowing the gears
I have one too and it's a 4x4. Love it. 149k miles
@@stevenbrooks1243 how the hell did you find a sc sb 7.3 6sleed thats very cool
@@gilldaking lol interesting enough I just stumbled across it at a used car lot I walked by it and was like oh that's an Ole 7.3 I looked inside and saw the stick in the center and I'm like a 6 SPEED! Week or so later I went and bought it lol if I can ever get the parts I will convert it to a 4wd I have to get a ZF6 for a 4wd truck I can't just add the rear case for the T case adapter. But for now it's cool I limo tinted all the windows and dropped the glare strip a 1/4 way down the windshield it's a good DD and gets honestly over 20 mpg if I drive conservatively
Man, wish I could of bought one of these new, trucks today are no where near as good as they used to be. Especially since they're making trucks ev. That's just asking for problems
Being to young in 99, if I “was” a hard working adult back then a 99 7.3 power stroke was the only choice then. The 2nd one only being the 12 valve Cummins which was discontinued the year prior, an even then it was a dodge, junk built truck. An of course GMs 6.5 was very underwhelming in comparison to Ford an Ram back then. I’ve owned two 99 7.3s an definitely were one of my favorites of all time.
The 6.5 V8 Detroit Diesel however wasn't that far off from the 7.3
@@borla4491 lmao. Yeah okay. Much rather have the 7.3 you nuts?
@@samuelw.3992 Clearly you didn't read my full comment
@@borla4491 what do you mean ? You said the 6.5 wasn’t far from the 7.3? Who in the heck would choose the 6.5 over the 7.3?

Same truck today still being made
This is one of my favorite Ford models but alot of them sucked ass with their engines, that's why I went with the GMC Sierra because I love the look. I prefer the 03-06 Sierras but I love Ford too.
The 7.3 was seriously the only great engine to be put in a super duty. GM on the other hand didn’t have a bad engine in their trucks from 99-2006.
It’s amazing how for the 2003 model year ford decided to turn what was a fantastic truck into a rolling pile of shit.
5:45 no way...I've never ever seen a short bed super duty... rare
It was computer generated. No such thing was ever made
@@djntqd ohh ok. It looked legit. Take care 👍
I've seen plenty of short beds in 99 and up F250s and F350s but they're all either Supercab or Crew Cab configurations.
@@stevenwolfe9085 thats what I was eluding to, no short bed regular cab was ever made.
why would anyone want a 3/4 ton or 1 ton and up Superduty Regular Cab with a Short Bed too begin with? You buy a Full Size 3/4 ton or 1 ton and up truck for payload capacity and tow rating.
Back when Ford made a decent truck...
One thing I hated about these was the bland dash choices, gray or tan. I wish they'd still match the interior to the paint and still do 2-tone paint.
You forgot about baby blue. My entire interior on my '99 is baby blue. Dash included.
And the 00 and 01 were available in medium blue as my 01 is
I wish they sold more trucks with the blue interior, it's hard to find a truck with that interior that's still in good shape.
at least they don't crack and break like dodge
Them prices though
I want one
Last of the mohicans
Just wait 10 years 1999 people, til Ford epically does an about-face and becomes the biggest offender of making trucks for those who are trying to pretend to be macho. And also, watch out for the new diesels coming out in 2004 people of 1999... you will not like the Powerstroke for over a decade! Hah
Those prices.....😔
Now ford is shoving ev down out throats, and hope it puts them out of business
Ummm, theres a UFO at 4:41
Love all of F-150
Ford builds the best trucks !!
Lol that’s a good one
I wish you could still buy a truck this basic
you can even get it without air conditioning
Who would have thought all the beds would rust off the frames within 10 years?
My truck is 22yrs old and it just started to rust 2yrs ago
You see more 99-03 ford super dutys still on the road today, than any dodge or GM from those years and it is not even close. Dodges rusted out before the next model year came out.
I went 20 years before removing my bed
@@djntqd I see tons of older fords and dodge not chevys
@@DakotaJaegle at least here in the rust belt, I see significantly more OBS, and "Super Duty" generation Ford still on the road than the 2nd Gen Cummins trucks. I barely see any dodges pre 2003.
It’s funny how it’s always ford that is doing stupid shit like that.
is true
Nothing wrong with the 5,4 and the v10 is a beast of and engine. I know as I drive both and drive brand x es to compare. Obviously, your anti Ford
