Reddish South has an interesting history. Reddish South was opened when the line between Stockport and Guide Bridge was completed by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway in October 1845. It was taken over by the London and North Western following a merger between the two in 1846. It used to get way more service as it catered for the LNWR mainline services between Manchester and Leeds for more than five decades, as regular Monday to Saturday hourly services would stop there. However, express traffic was drastically reduced in the 1890s when they were redirected to what's now Manchester Piccadilly. It remained a stop for local traffic, but overtime, the station was run to the ground as cross-country branches were seen as unfeasible. The original station building was demolished, engine shed removed, and even the sidings. There was hope in 2006 in regards to the station as Grand Central proposed a service from Bradford Interchange to Euston via Huddersfield that would've used the line, but Virgin being Virgin, Virgin Trains blocked it from happening because of its protection clause as the service would've used the West Coast Main Line as well which they didn't like.
Metrolink fun fact: Their rolling stock is the Bombardier M5000. Built solely for them in Bautzen, Germany and tested in Vienna, Austria. The Metrolink system is the only tram network in the United Kingdom capable of running vehicles in multiple and subsequently the M5000s can operate as either a single vehicle or coupled together to form a "double" unit. They're a part of the Flexity Swift family. In April 2007, eight Bombardier Flexity Swift trams were ordered by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive for Metrolink. These were intended to supplement the existing T-68/T-68A fleet (this fleet has since retired in 2014) and increase capacity on the Bury-Altrincham line, which was suffering from overcrowding. Based on the K5000 design used in Cologne and Bonn, these were designated the M5000. They currently have 147 of them as time went on as the system expanded and a bigger capacity was needed.
I was gonna say "Reddish South only gets one train in each direction on a Saturday." but Jen has the plan! Great video! Blackpool North - Blackpool South is another topic for a pointless journey in the north, same with Rochdale (National Rail) to Rochdale Railway Station (Metrolink), Bradford Interchange to Bradford Forster Square and Birmingham New Street to Birmingham Snow Hill/Birmingham Moor Street.
Another idea is going between any of the three west hampstead stations.West Hampstead overground to West Hampstead Thameslink is probably the hardest one
If I plug it into fastjp and tell it to avoid the "walk" mode, It tells me to take the Overground to Highbury and Islington, the Tube to St Pancras and finally Thameslink to West Hampstead Thameslink. Takes less than an hour. If I also tell it to avoid "tube" and "transfer" then it fails to find any itineraries. Manually trying to find a rail-only route, it looks like you could do West Hampstead to Stratford to Farringdon to West Hampstead Thameslink. Putting in Stratford as a via point to fastjp it gives me a time of just under an hour and a half.
Absolutely brilliant 👍 I wonder how many times Jen could have walked between Reddish South and Reddish North and back in the time it took to make this journey 4:42 for a brief second I thought you were planning to catch a plane to Reddish North. Now that really would have been epic 😂
The ultimate crossover would be to do a pointless journey where you both take different routes and do it in a proper JenOnTheMove style race! Really enjoyed this video though, nice to see some guests being brought into this series!
Enjoyed this one, and with added @JenOnTheMove too! TPE of course had to pull a TPE didn't they? Even using the potentially quickest routes (either Reddish South > Stockport > Man Picc > Reddish North or Reddish South > Stalyvegas > Man Picc > Reddish North) - walking would still be quicker, as would the 203 bus between both too.
yyup i get a 156 to newcastle to get to school every day. They're really loud... Sometimes it's a 158 instead which is nicer, and a lot quieter, but also a lot rarer.
I feel like the Stockport to Stalybridge line should be converted into Metrolink and connect with and existing tram line and would boost connections and ridership for the line with a more frequent service and more connections that weren't previously available
After due consideration, no. A very useful TRAIN route especially for freight and excursions. Would be nice to restore a service such as Stalybridge to Wilmslow/Crewe a few times per day. I don't think even on a "provide it and they will come" basis, it would generate sufficient traffic to warrant a "rip it up and put tram tracks down" scheme.
Nick I do have a question why do you cut out the locomotives of the 2 freight trains you saw? Also I do somewhat question your route. A more fun or interesting route would've been Reddish South-Stockport Stockport-New Mills Newtown New Mills Newtown-New Mills Central (walk) New Mills Central-Reddish North
Very amusing thanks - it may have been quicker to have gone via Sheffield! You say "I like ticket offices" but do you actually use them? I once saw you toss a coin on your mobile phone - using electricity do do so, whereas tossing a real coin is more environmentally friendly I suspect. Nonetheless I love your style and you will go far, young man!!
You're corrupting me. Today I had to get home from Warrington. The easy way would have been to get the train from WBQ to WGN and call somebody to give me a lift back from there; but I thought nah, I'll go to Warrington Central instead and see how many trains I need to get home via Manchester. It only took 3 trains in the end, but surprised me by finishing at our local station (which I had thought was currently closed due to maintenance further up the line). And I was briefly on the same route as one of the trains you took in this video.
Oh wow, Reddish South really needs a bit of TLC. They've shortened one platform, let the other turn into an overgrown mess, and even cut down the platform street lights!
You can go to Stratford east London which you can no fewer then 4 pointless journeys which you can start on the DLR high and low level platforms, central and jubilee lines, GA Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale then overground to the elizabeth lines just only using the low speed station. Or on the high speed station Stratford international high speed to Stratford international DLR.
Great idea to have a collaboration with Jen. Almost a new series, pointless journeys featuring........ Geoff Marshall's "northern correspondent" Karl must be a good candidate.
Try this next time: First part with rail ticket: Reddish South - Stockport (Northern) Stockport - New Mills New Town (Northern) Now best part, You can travel with Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket: New Mills NewTown - Buxton (continue same train as before) Buxton - Matlock (bus) Matlock - Derby (EMR) Derby - Sheffield (EMR/XC) Sheffield - New Mills Central (Northern) Back to NR tickets: New Mills - Reddish North (continue with same train) Enjoy Peak District views while traveling ;)
Nicely done, except that changing at Altrincham might have saved the plan, by virtue of a footbridge. Is Reddish South still served by a Paliamentary Train? \m/
I don't think there are any passenger trains from Stockport to Victoria, though some empty coaching stock runs do seem to be going that way at the moment (possiblly partly due to the recent accident)
i love this but jen coming back with a starbucks will never sit right with me… (part 2 of asking for westhoughton-daisy hill as a pointless journey idea)
Another pointless journey is from penge west to penge east. 1. Penge west to surrey quays. 2. Surrey quays to new cross. 3. New cross to Lewisham. 4. Lewisham to nunhead. 5. Nunhead to shortlands. 6. Shortlands to penge east

jen, nick there is nothing wrong with class 150, they are good old classic units that work, and about the new units they are not good they are just new for a bid then they are just normal units, i did like watching you both but the more you crises good units the less i watch
I may be biased, but this is your best pointless journey yet 🤣
Wonder what makes you think that 🤔
Don't forget, you owe him a Greggs for 10K! xD
Yeah, i really enjoyed watching this
It's probably one of the most challenging, given the limited service at Reddish South.
@@donovanemery597it only challenging if you end at a limited service station. 🤔😉

2:47 That is de most disgusting window I have ever seen! Great video. And Jen taking care of Little Nick, how cute. 🤣
Please, tell me what you expected on a Northern service
@@mudchute4dlrlet alone a 150
This is a brilliant Pointless Journey with JenOnTheMove and some perfect funny moments like I know the quickest way to the Airport lol
Why is Jen on the move and nick badley in he is with Jen on the move in srotsh for Passleess tip for day one going in to Manchester train cain to nary

You should do Wakefield Westgate to Wakefield Kirkgate!! :)))
Ive lived in Reddish all my life and never knew you could get a train from Reddish South to Stockport!
This is just comady and trains in 1 i love it well deserved 10k Subscribers
Greggs ahoy! \m/
this is an awesome pointless journey great mix of trains & stations & tram awesome job from both you & Jen on the move
Nick: Where's Jen gone off to ?
Me: Probably, a Costa😅
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. And yes, everyone loves ticket offices.
And then it turned out to be Starbucks!
I’ve done a pointless journey yesterday night. Stratford DLR High Level platform to Stratford DLR Low Level platform. Using the most changes.
A very entertaining pointless journey! And certainly not a pointless collab, more please, perhaps Geoff Marshall next?
The ultimate crossover would be to do a pointless journey where you both take different routes and do it in a proper JenOnTheMove style race!
Really enjoyed this video though, nice to see some guests being brought into this series!
i cried when i saw stockport i went there every friday when i was 7 on northern class 323s from handforth

4:43 - A year late, but what it means is that @JenOnTheMove and Nick Badley did a race from Trafford Bar to Manchester Airport, and Nick won
yyup i get a 156 to newcastle to get to school every day. They're really loud... Sometimes it's a 158 instead which is nicer, and a lot quieter, but also a lot rarer.
Tattenham Corner to Epsom Downs... Not only a pointless journey but also a terminus to terminus pointless journey....
I love the occasional double acts on my favourite you tube channels.
Next Pointless in London with Geoff? 😂 and one Pointless from Sankey to Warrington West?
I guess theres a shorter but equally pointless trip via Guide Bridge and Ashburys. I wonder if services exist?
As your next pointless journeys you should do smethwick Galton bridge high level to the low level
Great video! Definitely my favourite of the series! Just have to see if Jen gets you that Greggs now you've got to 10k! 😂
Another great video. Based on some of your tweets; Newark Northgate to Newark Castle must be coming soon?
Can you do Rice Lane to Walton? They literally take a minute or two to walk between.
I feel like the Stockport to Stalybridge line should be converted into Metrolink and connect with and existing tram line and would boost connections and ridership for the line with a more frequent service and more connections that weren't previously available

Any place that sounds like Redditch, I'm surprised Jen didn't kick up a stink.
You should do a pointless journey from Watford to Watford Junction next, before the Croxley rail link opens and it's not possible anymore.
0:50 very true

Westhoughton - Daisy Hill is a good idea :)
You should do heath high to heath low level :)
My fave pointless journey yet. Edenbridge Town is waiting for you both. Brilliant.
But which station in Reddish is the most pointless station. What about doing Thorne North and Thorne South in East Yorkshire.
4 minutes on the 203 if the traffic's decent. 10-15 min walk
Since I am a patreon for both of you, do I get a discount? And what happened to the so-called friends? Did they get lost along the way?
Miss my trips round Manchester. Just din’t miss TPE. Hmm often bus/tram was quicker than long waits
What was that freight train carrying?
Another pointless journey is from penge west to penge east. 1. Penge west to surrey quays. 2. Surrey quays to new cross. 3. New cross to Lewisham. 4. Lewisham to nunhead. 5. Nunhead to shortlands. 6. Shortlands to penge east
