A western follower of Dharma here, I was born Christian but was impressed by the knowledge of the Upanishads. Mr. Lakhani, your legacy will not be forgotten, you gave me so much knowledge that I cannot express my gratitude in words. You guided me when I had no direction. Om Namah Shivaya Jai Maha Kali

As a so called ‘Westerner’ I have a certain respect & value Hinduism as I do other religions/beliefs/practices…though I do get fed up being ‘Western bashed’ based on media, personal bias teaching everything here is commercial, evil & money oriented, whilst disregarding aspects of a similar nature in The East & blaming these on the West, as if we have no spirituality of our own or a universal commonality.
As Jay says it is unnecessary to adopt Hindu culture, names & practices, when we have our own. We can learn from each other & see things in ways we otherwise might not, applying that knowledge. I notice that these so called’Western traits’ have little or nothing to do with our own culture & more to do with the less savoury aspects of human nature (greed, exploitation, power) which are just as rife in the ‘East’ albeit under the guise of spirituality thus marketed/people exploited for personal benefit, monetary gain. What about those who ‘love to become Christian/Buddhist’ etc by way of escaping the caste system, poor social treatment, racism, gender discrimination, social immobility & poverty? Nothing is perfect, you get from your beliefs what you bring to them…
Technically the term Hindu refers to the culture & country as opposed to sanatam dharma which better summarises the *universal* nature of being. This ‘commercial Western’ vs ‘mystic Eastern’ nonsense perpetuates division rather than appreciation for our differing countries, contrasting cultures & heritage.

To be honest I feel that the authentic Sanatani is born into Aryadharma, it's a matter of birthright for Hindu Indians. Also the issue of Varnashrama Dharma bears on this (as per 'Purusha Sukta' in the Rig Veda).
That said, the whole world can benefit immensely from the spiritual treasures of Hinduism, studying Upanishads, Shankaracharya, Mahabharat, Ramayana, various Vedic sciences such as Yoga, Vaastu, Ayurveda, Jyotisha Shastra etc.
So, without trying to be 'Hindus', Westerners can still be immensely appreciative of the spiritual revitalization that Sanatan Dharma offers us.

I am a. Hindu and I Love Jesus Christ. I Respect all Religion Except Islam because it simply makes people to seek a Vogue life after death where we can do all the bad stuff like fucking, drinking alcohol etc etc. It just gives people a false hope of luxury and enjoyment life after death. May all Muslim Brothers realizes this soon.

We must accepted, respected all existed religions adapted to all differents way of living of all differents peaple...who lived differently.... and a true respectable religion must always respected, accepted all peaple altogether with their religions.... and educated his peaple about this world of difference, learned them to accept everyone with their religions.... There is no such thing as BECOME A HINDU.
Dictionary says "A Hindu is a person who calls him/herself a HINDU.
vedas is Knowledge. Available to all at no cost. All you have to do is "AUM" Receive it.
Ramayana and Mahabharata are Stories. The only significance they carry is that "Family Feuds" are worse than Feuds outside the Family. How does one justify Banbas of Rama, or kicking out Sita for no reason. And now this SATI thing. It is the Romans who used to say that winning a war makes you a God.
So many beggars in India. So many alcoholics in India, and then these arranged marriage, and what about widows. Do not forget the jealous mother in laws.
Yes, our inability to address our problems and face them has resulted in 3000 years of ruthless slavery.
Festival of Bharat is making sure it will happen again.
Those well trained people from Pakistani invaded Bombay and left a message "This is a trailer, see what is to come, this is just a sample"
    Al Jazeera wants Kashmir.
    Wake up from your Stuper.
    MODI Yes
NEHRU No In his boasting gave away half of Kashmir.

Westerners becoming "Hindu" a nonsense term BTW....is simply going back to our roots. After 25 years of being a Western Hindu I simply replaced the Indian Gods with European ones.
Puja is a universal ritual. Look at a catholic mass its a puja.

Westerners do not have their own autonomously developed Creation philosophy and after claiming a now debunked Aryan invasion that gave them that claim, it is natural that they gravitate towards eastern philosophies.
Some of them also gravitate towards joining the Inca people of Tahuantinsuyu (south america) because those groups tend to be more “new age”, they also incorporate Hindu philosophies themselves these days, and so westerners are attracted to those groups and are allowed into their groups. It is more than likely that westerners introduced and helped those Inca adapt Hindu philosophies into their traditions because it is anew developed.
The nations within Mexico and central “america” are more closed off and do not allow westerners in but do allow “people of color” into their groups to learn. The reason they do not allow westerners in these areas should be pretty obvious, we see what they did to our brothers and sister in Tahuantinsuyu, meaning their past behavior has proven to be intrusive rather than inclusive. They attempt to give everything they learn a western rationalization and change their meanings, definitions, accept academics erroneous interpretations, and misrepresent traditions.
I believe westerners should adopt philosophies as a blank slate and leave their western reasoning, definitions, presumptions, and desire to square the circle in the west.

yea, nah, Europeans were colonized by Christian Rome. We are so colonized we don't even remember! There were tons of polytheistic European creation stories, from Greece and Rome to Norse, Celtics, Gaelic...
...these are mostly lost practices. I don't believe it ever made sense for a european to practice monotheistic desert religions, religions of fertile vast farming were always more polytheistic and animist. THAT is why so many westerners are drawn to the surviving polytheistic or animistic religions, or they become Wiccan/Neopagan. Talk about colonized. Our history and culture isn't even salvageable, it's stolen from us forever. ALL THAT WE HAVE, the little bit we have, is what the colonizers (Romans) wrote about us in their histories thousands of years ago. No amount of money or privlege can ever make up for losing your identity. Can you even imagine.
