  • Bob Sheppard (10/20/2010-7/11/2010), voice of Yankee Stadium for 57 seasons delivered his longest group of introductions on 4/15/1976 when the refurbished Yankee Stadium was opened. This is Part 2 of 3 videos. Written by then Yankee PR Director Marty Appel, listen to Bob introduce Joe Louis along with other greats on this star-studded opener.

Bob was a genuinely admirable human being and a gentleman of the old school who represented a bygone era of aspiration and dignity. The sacred eloquence that Bob's work represented and epitomized has now officially past. He was a credit to his faith, his family, his friends, and to sports. He possessed unrivaled character, integrity, courage, and class. How lucky I was to even know this exceptional man since his sterling influence on my life echoed through to my very heart and soul. I shall miss him terribly. We shall all miss the magnificent Robert Leo Sheppard.
    Thank you Sheppard fans!!

At 4:05, you can see a chain link fence extension in front of the bleachers in right center field. Graig Nettles went to Billy Martin during this first series and suggested it wasn't a good idea to have that extension as it would take away Yankee homeruns from their lefty hitters. It was quietly removed....and less than six months later, Chris Chambliss' pennant winning home run left the park right where that original chain link fence was.

Strange that they'd introduce Mantle and DiMaggio and then the former postmaster-general and Toots Shor.

@Les Moore It's a typo obviously. He was born in 1910.

Mantle retired after 1968, so a very large percentage of the crowd at this 1976 home opener saw him play in his prime. The same goes for Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra and Elston Howard. The ovation Mantle, Ford or Howard might get today would be quite a bit less roaring.

The facility still had a few things to be put in. By the end of the year seating was 57,000. This day it was 54,000 something. Until June, the dugout benches' backrests were not even padded. Since they had planned the opening for this day, April 15th, I guess they figured the less essential things could wait. It must've been terrible for Yankee fans to wait two years for the team to come back home and have to see the team play at Shea during 74 and 75.

Of course, not much is said of how Max Schmeling and Joe Louis became good friends, and how Schmeling helped Joe Louis frequently.

1995 is when Mantle died, so I've no doubt his ovation was as loud in the early to mid 90s as it was in 76. My comment wasn't intended to be controversial. Let's assume that the fan that saw Mantle play in his prime, or until 1964, and can recall it well, was 15 in 1961. In 95 the person would have been 49. That fan is now 62. So, I would imagine that about 60-70 percent (probably more) of the fans now at the park are younger than 62. So the roar might not be as loud most likely.

At this point there was almost no advertising at all at the stadium. There was a Manufacturers Hanover sign in right and a Marlboro sign in center. They would eventually put up a Getty gasoline sign in left and a French's mustard sign in center. If you looked at the stadium in 2008, there were signs and banners everywhere. Almost every area available under the lattice work had a company advertisement. Were we really worse off 35 years ago?
