I got a 71 plate eUP about a year ago and we love it. Great for city driving, we don’t do many miles and it just goes and goes.
Had to take a last minute trip to see family this weekend, 500 mile round trip and the eUP managed it like a trooper. Averaged 4.7mi/kWh with the heater on doing 60-65 on the motorway. (Where it wasn’t miles and miles of 50mph for no discernible reason)

It’s crazy that VW pulled the Up, Mii and Citigo. Imagine the sales if VW chose to develop a mark2, tweaking its battery and interior instead of binning it entirely. It would’ve been a far more appealing prospect that the current crop of entry level EVs.

Great vid, I love my Mii, I bought it to replace a 19 year old very sturdy yaris. I was upset to part with my yaris after 13 years of hassle-free driving but health problems meant I could no longer cope without aircon and with a manual gearbox. The Mii is so easy and comfortable to drive, I do all my commuting in it (60 mile round trip). I've not bothered with the app for it, but just use the app on my home charger and set starting percentage (a guess) and finish percentage. I'm hoping I'll own the Mii for a long time. We will keep a second car in the household as we regularly drive off-road to get to a farm and we regularly tow a trailer with a 2 tonne laden weight. Currently we have a 15 year old Kia sorento for this and we are likely to remain with an ICE for this purpose for now due to finances.

Great video, I’ve got exactly the same model and colour, it’s been absolutely brilliant for all of our short (under 30 miles) journeys ferrying the kids around to all their activities, plus we can comfortably get all 4 of us in. Considering some roof bars and bike rack as well. I chose this car after watching one of your videos, although I ended up going with a PCP so I didn’t have to worry about future value / battery etc - just a personal choice. Model Y for road trips and low range car for shopping it’s a great combination the Model Y width and turning circle makes it a bad choice for going down the shops but to keep the price of charging on road trips down you need a Tesla. I can see short range city EVs becoming more popular with people who have home charging when they see how cheap they are to run.

These are really good small cars. Drove one of these when needed picked up from a business at end of lease. They used them for their staff to do local runs. Company had their own chargers at their office. I would agree they are not for longer runs but ideal for a second car for town runs.

The BMW i3 is also a great second-hand bargain. Around the same price or cheaper than the Mii/Up and you get a much nicer interior, lot's of kit and similar range (depending on the battery variant). The early REX versions can actually be bought for around £7k and can go limitless distance, if you keep filling up the range extender, and don't use the battery.

if Seat software is anything like my eUp, then the only way I found to charge it to 100% is set a "Charging Location" that lets you charge to 100%. I've once managed to get it to 100% using that charge button down near the gear stick, but never managed to reproduce it reliably. The battery/charging arrangement is mind bogglingly unintuitive. I don't really worry about battery wear charging over 80% because I only ever slow charge from a 3-pin socket. I believe that's way less damaging than fast DC when it is over 80%. Also, I don't charge to 100% simply because regen breaking is disabled with a near full battery. I now just set it to max 90%, near enough for full range and still get regen.

  • @74HC04

I don't know the SEAT bluetooth app (which I think has just been discontinued anyway), but here's a 'hack' you can use to set an arbitrary charge cut-off point, e.g. 80%. It should also be possible in VW's Volkswagen app, or the SEAT equivalent but I write this from the perspective of "Maps + More", the e-up! Bluetooth app which is also confirmed as working on the Mii Electric. (So long as only one VW/SEAT/Skoda Bluetooth app is installed on your phone at a time, Maps + More works).
    Maps + More:
    1. Go into settings then "e-manager" and set the "minimum charge level" (aka "charge immediately to" in VW app semantics) to 80%.
    2. Set a charging location with a target charge level of 80%.
    3. Setup a charging departure time to use the new charging location, with every day selected and repeat enabled. This time will be ignored, so I set mine to 6am.
    4. Enable the departure time (tick the tick box) and confirm it's enabled by a continuous orange light on the button immediately in front of the gear selector.
The charge immediately to value only applies when a departure time is set. But because the percentage is the same as the deperature time's one, the departure time and percentage you've set are effectively ignored and you get immediate charging to 80%, only governed by any schedule set in your charger (wallbox). (I set a timer on my 'wallbox' for economy 7, but yours might be governed by solar or other timers).
If you want to temporarily remove the limit, press the button in front of the gear shifter and start charging before the light in this button puts itself back on, or toggle 'off' the departure time tick box in Maps + More.
    -------
I learned the above through a lot of time spent Google Translating the goingelectric (German language) forum. It works for me.

I'd love to see you buy and sell your own car every 6 months!
Yes, as you say, there'd be a bit of risk in it but i think that'd make it even more compelling content.
I liked seeing the buying/selling process you went through and having an update on the best way/site/company to buy/sell every 6 months would be great (maybe having your own ranking of the main players in that space?).
Plus, obviously, you'd then have a "new" car to review, plus the content on why you've chosen that car and then whether it lives up to your expectations.
I understand wanting to get loaner cars from manufacturers or dealers but I always take reviews and content like that with a pinch of salt (cause the reviewer has no skin in the game at that point), plus it's a very crowded space on YT.

Another Seat Mii electric owner here, and like you I have found the biggest issue as regards the Seat app is trying to stop the car chsrging to 100% all the time. I am using a granny charger, with the intention of getting a wall box later on. The granny charger lets me select the amps at each power on, and I realised that if the car is down to about 20 miles of range and I plug in just before bedtime with it set at 6 amps, it will not have long enough on charge to get to 100% by morning.

Only had it during the cold months so be interesting to see what it does in the summer mileage wise. Great to hear you talk about them. I do a round journey of 50 miles twice a week plus some town driving so ideal. Do have a diesel Fusion for longer journey now the folks are getting old and I need that longer range. Will keep the SEAT long term. On a side note I have noticed the front tyres are worn even at 14k so when I replace will go for cheaper brand as the branded are expensive for that sort of low mileage. Also the first MOT picked up a lot of suspension issues so wonder if the additional weight has its toll. Guessing the underside is still just parts from the lighter petrol version. Hi Jim, I got a Seat Mii just a few months before you (very similar for £10K). For me it was the right mix of price, ability, limits. I occasionally do longer trips as it is my only car and if I had spent another £2-3K, yes it would have been easier with something else, but they have lost more money now.
The GOM was over-reading on a trip back at New Year, but I knew it was as I multiplied KWH charged X M/KWH actual. This was at a charging stop so easy enough to deal with. I have a ODB reader to see actual % battery too, which help a little. There is no straightforward way to stop at 80%, the hack would be on the charging times in the app. based on constant charging rate X time to = % - as you have intelligent charger that will not work so good. Full is actually 95% on the ODB and there is some 'empty' reserve that make the GOM miles drop quickly from around 30 miles depending on M/KWH at the time. Best summer range around 140 at 4.5 M/KWH, now around 90 longer run 3 M/KWH, short distance frozen 2 M/KWH.

Manufacturers have mostly retooled and well underway for the transition so the question now is only the when rather than the if. Assuming you're not 18 there should be plenty of used ICE cars around for the rest of your lifetime - and new options for the next 5-10 years. Cars that can do 400 miles on a single charge (Not that anyone actually needs that) are now a reality so it's only really the towing issue and home charging issue (for some) left to crack.

Max rate of charge - if you are using the Ohme, doesn't that usually allow you set the max SOC to say 80% when linked to Ohme wallbox
I think you are referring to SOC at 80% instead of 99% (how full the battery is)
Rate of Charge is where you charge at 8A, 10A, 13A, 16, 20A, 25A or 32A on certain chargers
(not all rates available - varies by charger/EV)

I am interested in lease deals on previously owned cars... Could you consider making such a video? Thanks in advance if you do.... BTW My reasoning for this approach is that I think that the further dramatic ingress of Chinese cars of ever increasing utility (range and speed of charging) will continue to undermine the value of relatively new cars until the rate of evolution / progress slows to more incremental improvements rather than the step change ones we are seeing. Plus if economic times become harder cars will take a hit like never before now they are so financialised and so few are stably owned.... I hope that makes sense!

Have a deposit on one of these electric Miis at the moment, same colour as yours Jim, 21 plate 20,350 miles, 1 owner that they told me was a company. Agreed a price a lot lower than those you showed from a car superstore. 3 month warranty with it. Now wondering why they are selling it to me so cheap. Never bought a car before, I'm 61 years old, always had company cars. It failed it's first MOT on a missing internal mirror and play in the handbrake. Those were rectified and 6 months left on the MOT now. Had a couple of advisories as well, one tyre closed to legal limit and, this is the weird one, and the one that worries me, the charge socket covers are missing, you know the little internal plastic ones that attach to the outer metal flap door opening. And there's no service history. I've done a vehicle check and all good on that front. So, given it's age mileage etc, it seems the price I've agreed could be a good deal, but the reasons for failure and particularly these missing socket covers worry me, not because they are expensive to replace, just why are they missing, what happened to them and as I assume their job is to prevent water ingress to the charge points, has any damage been done. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.

Maybe a previous owner damaged them trying to prise them off without realising they lock. They lock on about 20 seconds after unlocking the car. Johnny Smith had that problem in his review and tried to prise them off with a stick. If you can shine a light into the socket and the metal looks bright and clean you should be Ok. If in doubt get it checked by a HEVRA approved garage.

👍 I think the mistrust is falling as people get more education from reliable sources rather than dirt rags but we shall see. The eventual replacement will likely be electric too I dare say.

The battery mistrust "thing" would be eased overnight if the general public only but saw videos like the UA-cam videos posted by James from Cleveleys, who run a fleet of MG5 electric estate cars. The example James drives is a 71 reg example, which has now covered 150k miles. James reported the battery state of health as 90% during his last UA-cam video. The first set of tyres lasted 41k miles. The brake pads and discs are still the originals, and James reckons they'll see 200k miles. The problem seems to be that a lot of people latch onto negatives, and feel more comfortable not letting go of them..... Many don't realise you can also have the state of health of a used EV battery checked fairly easily, if they were considering a purchase.....

@ I agree, I have a leased Lexus RZ450e, the battery has a 10 year guarantee so no issue for me but perception rules the public as opposed to fact!

This is a good point, battery degradation is impossible to avoid. Also EV manufacturers set the software to limit the charging capacity, then gradually increase the capacity via updates. This cleverly masks the battery degradation.

Why do you confuse dealer prices with trade in price? If your car is worth £9500 at a dealer, then you'll be lucky to get £7500 at the dealer or £7500-8000 at most privately. You can't provide any included legal minimum warranty obligations and don't incur business costs like a dealer does.

I’ve already had an offer of £9k on the back of this video mate.
