      Quite a few of the imported DE blades are actually made by Gillette even if their name isn't on the package. Astra is a notable example. Lets see Gillette try pull their new marketing campaign in Russia.

      Also annoyed with Gillett. On my 4th week with a safety razor. No nicks or cuts so far, less expensive and a closer shave than disposables. Gillett not only chased me away, they sent me to a better, less expensive and less wasteful shaving system.

    Hello Matt.
    I've been using Edwin Jagger. Like yourself.
    I thought I'd mention when I returned to the D.E shaving world. I picked up an inexpensive
    Dark coloured 3 Piece Double Edged Razor from Amazon here in the UK by a company called
    Home Salon.
    I still alternate it with my
    Edwin Jagger.
    The main reason is the superior
    blade exposure.
    I purchased the Home Salon razor at the time for £12. It currently retails at around £14.
    I've used it with numerous blades from different manufacturers.
    I've found it to be excellent razor for beginners or experienced shavers.
    An honest review of the Home Salon D.E Razor
    by you Matt would be welcome.
    Your Razor Emporium reviews are exceptional.
    And your relaxed personality compliments them.
    Keep well.

    The quality and production of these videos are fantastic. I am so glad to see a wet shaving company invest in gear and people to put out quality content for the masses. I've shared videos from this channel to friends and they instantly see the quality of wet shaving because of the quality of videos and content. Thanks Matt and Marissa, and the whole team for the excellence in your craft.

    I am now 15 razors into this "hobby" there is really only one Razor I would recommend FAR above all others. The razor that stands on a tier of it's own for beginners is the Rockwell 6c. There is just something about this razor that feels so smooth yet it's efficient. The 6c also grows with you as a shaver and it is versatile with the three plates. The Merkur 34c and EJ DE89 are great razors that I do love, but the Rockwell 6c is truly in a category of it's own. So far, the Rockwell 6c/6s and in a Tier of their own compared to all other razors.

    This was a fabulous video! I went out and bought the King C. The technique was well explained and first time I tried this I was amazed! Best shave ever, not a single cut and no soreness. Second time the same as was the third. I cannot believe that I am in my late fifties and I never knew how to shave. Thanks so much! Instructionals like this are just great!

    I decided to go with a Gillette Fatboy, made in the year I was born, 1958. It’s still in phenomenal shape, being 63 years old. Wish I was in as good condition. The Fatboy’s were great products, very well built out of nickel plated brass components, were easy to load and adjustable, to nine different settings. So, depending on your beard coarseness or how many days of growth you had, you could adjust the blade exposure to give you just the right amount of cutting edge. It’s just too bad you have to reach back in history to get a really well designed and produced product to get a decent shave. Buy one, if you can. They are worth it. Oh yeah, I like the Russian Voskhod Blade’s. To me, they are the best all around blade for sharpness and edge retention. I can generally get about half dozen shaves out of one, before they start scraping my face.

    Pretty much nailed all my thoughts on these. The standard Superspeed is my go-too travel razor simply for the lightweight. I also have the small Tech travel, but the butterfly design is better for travel in my opinion. In the bathroom at home though is a the Edwin-Jagger along with a Superspeed red (more aggressive) which are my go-to daily shavers, alternate between them. Between those, don't need anything else.

      I have a superspeed and a small tech (ball end handle) both made in Argentina in the 1960-1970 period. I find the Superspeed way more aestetic but the small tech is more comfortable to shave in the difficult parts, under the nose for example.

      @therealchickentender Рік тому +1

      @@francohic 👍Since posting this I rarely use my regular Superspeed and have gone back to the Travel Tech... I even use it for day-to-day and it's my second favorite next to the Superspeed Red-tip. It's more aggressive than the original Super-Speed. Love it. I still use my Edwin-Jagger once in a while but the handle is smooth and slippery so I usually prefer the Travel Tech and Red-tip. All are great razors... My beard is just a little to thick/coarse for the regular super-speed and tends to pull/drag a bit, but I keep it because it's the oldest original I have. :)

      @666NedFlanders ahahaha, not only is your reply comical since it seems like you are a child who just learned how to use curse words, but you are so so very wrong and yet so indignant in your error.
      You truly have no idea what an alloy really is do you? Salt is an ionic compound, it forms from a chemical reaction(electron exchange) between sodium and chlorine at a 1:1 ratio, forming ionic bonds. An alloy is a mixture of metals or metals and non metals in a variety of ratios. Alloys do not form chemical bonds between its constituents. Alloys do indeed retain the metallic properties of its constituents. Ferrous alloys (alloys of iron) still retain its ferromagnetic properties, and its susceptibility to corrosion and oxidation (rust, iron oxide).
      "Steel, an alloy of iron, should itself, not have iron in it." This must be a joke.... Steel can be 99% iron in some of the most basic steel, or 50.1%(sometimes less but still the majority of the mixture) iron in complex alloys. And yes, it is still elemental iron.
      You truly don't know the difference between a compound and an alloy(mixture), do you?
      You really are a walking example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. And you tell me to get the F out of here and call me a pedant? HAH!

At the moment I’ve got a beard so I only shave my neck, which is my most extremely sensitive part. It's too bad adjustable razors -- like a Parker Variant (~$57), Merkur Progress (~$50+), Rockwell 6C ($50) or QShave / Ming Shi 2000S / River Lake (all Merkur Futur clones ~$8+) -- aren't commonly recommended as a first razor for new wet shavers. Yes, some of these razors aren't as affordable the ones noted in the video, but they can be as mild or as mildly aggressive as your skill or beard growth needs -- and (since you can change their aggressiveness) will longer refrain a need for additional safety razors. Overall, the Parker Variant is probably the best option given the knurled handle and continuous adjustable setting options -- as the other razors doesn't have much (if any) grip-able surface (Merkur Progress / QShave / Ming Shi 2000S / River Lake) or aren't as convenient when changing settings (Rockwell 6C).

    Hi, great video. When I started shaving i started with a gillette double edged razor but my neck on one side always seemed to get little nicks and cuts and bleed and I would have soreness for the rest of the day. I then decided to use a cartridge razor (mach3 gillette) and that stopped my problem with my neck very rarely getting nicks and no soreness. Now I'm older I decided to buy a new safety razor a Muhle closed tooth razor (m49?) and guess what it gives a fairly close shave but yet again I'm getting nicks and soreness on my right neck.
    Is this something I'm doing which causes this or is it just because my neck is very sensitive - maybe I'm too heavy using my razor. I'd like to stay using the de safety but if i continue my nicks and cuts then I'll have to go back to my cartridge razor I suppose.

    Don't quite understand how the build would affect the shave this extremely? Isn't it very dependent on the blade itself that's inserted?
    Just asking because the one I have is having trouble cutting through my chin beard area. It feels like it's tugging as opposed to cutting through it smoothly like on the sides (my beard is not as strong yet on the sides)

    For whatever reason India seems to know shaving... I would always consider a razor manufactured in India to be among the best from a manufacturing and a quality standpoint - I know that the American brands and products will be second to none but you'll often pay for the patriotisms (which can be worth it - don't get me wrong) - with most products these days even a 4.5 star or a 5 star review on Amazon won't tell the whole story - watch the reviews and support those who support us (Razor Emporium)...

    Why should the razor handle matter? It only holds the blade. What cuts is the blade, not the handle, right? (I am looking for a DE razor for my husband)

    • @mayisharutyunyan8853
      @mayisharutyunyan8853 5 років тому +2

      Blade reveal is how much of the blade the razor exposes, a razor with more blade reveal is more agressive, cuts closer, results in a smoother shave and is better for coarser beards but when used by a not-so-skilled shaver may cause nicks, irritation, razor burn and ingrown hair. A milder razor on the other hand with less blade reveal may not cut as close, but would be more safe to use and cause less irritation. A good strategy of introducing your husband into DE wet shaving would be to gift him a good novice friendly razor ( like the ones in this video Edwin jagger de8* series, Merkur 34c or Parker 24c if you trust him ) alongside a blade sampler pack with a blade sampler pack which includes various de blades on the aggressiveness spectrum (blades can also be very aggressive and sharp - feather, shark; very mild - derby; and anywhere in between). Let him mix and match, try many blades and figure out which one works out the best for him. Also, if getting the razor does not break your budget, you can also invest in an inexpensive shaving brush ( like the plisson style synthetic ones, but don't limit yourself to them, look around the wet shaving forums and do some research).

      @@mayisharutyunyan8853 Thank you so much for your reply and information. I have 2 questions: 1) You said that a mild razor does not cut as close. So, would giving more passes eventually achieve a close shave? 2) Does the butterfly type cut as good as the screw-on types? If so, I would prefer a butterfly one which is more convenient. I was looking into Parkar 22R and 99R (which are both butterflies). Which one (or other ones) would you recommend? PS. My husband has coarse beard but is a novice.

    • @mayisharutyunyan8853
      @mayisharutyunyan8853 5 років тому

      @@sunflowerhk100 The butterfly mechanism does not affect the aggressiveness of the razor, it's just for the convenience and blades can be loaded faster than with the conventional screw on mechanism. There are mild and aggressive butterfly style razors just like mild and aggressive screw-on mechanism razors. As far as recommendations go, I haven't personally tried the 22R nor the 99R, but Parkers are pretty popular in the shaving community, so you shouldn't have much trouble finding reviews on these models, just browse around and look at peoples' feedback on these razors. And don't worry too much about getting a razor of the best possible aggressiveness, because, as I mentioned earlier, there are so many other factors for a good quality shave - namely the razor blades, the slickness of the soap, etc etc. My advice would be to look at reviews, can't go wrong with that + a good name brand like Parker. If your husband has a coarse beard he should take it one step at a time. Chances are even with the best razor a novice will not be getting a superb quality shave from the get go. Give him some advice on the matter, show him some video tutorials on the subject, and learn as he goes. Getting him the razor is just the first step of introducing him to wet shaving. Share the hobby with him and help him get started.

      Mayis below has covered pretty much everything you need to know about the blades, but as regards the handles there are two main things.
      1. The EJ DE89 has a smooth handle and may be slippy with wet hands and soap. The DE89L (I think) has lines, hence the "L" along its lenght to aid grip. There are other handles as well so this is down to personal preference.
      2. The weight of the handle can affect the shave. Too light and you'd need to press, too heavy and you could over do it. Most people look for a razor where the handle and head are about the same and you can balance the razor on your finger just below the head.

      I guess I view it differently because I'm a biopsychologist who has studied and seen the effect of biological, psychopathological, and sociocultural implications of the suppression of emotions in men because it is what society teaches men to do. There's a reason why men are more successful at committing suicide (by using more violent means) and why they've been shown to be more angry and violent. Learned callousness leads to more violence in the home for some people, too, because when those men are either told to feel something or do feel something, they become angry, which increases violent behavior. The goal is better society and the community for the future, not to attack men.

People don't like the uncomfortable feeling or going against sociocultural schemas. But hey, you do you. Just know that your happy bubble can definitely be popped lol
