Hearing Ben talking about the drum lines, one can notice how he was working hard to always become a better drummer. You can’t have good rock songs at its full potential without a good drummer! I’m glad Ben was there with Silverchair.
Please never stop making this series, I’ve watched all of them just today and can’t wait for more. You’re amazing at breaking it down for us normies. You was my Favorite drummer but now also my favorite youtuber
It blows me away to know this album is 20 years old now...it honestly doesn't feel like it was that long ago. I really can't put into words how special Diorama was to me back then and still is to this day. It doesn't age. I listened to this album everyday, multiple times a day for 2 years straight.
When it came out I hated it and was upset after my first listen. I was not ready for it. Now it is my favorite album of all time and it is my go to listen.
Oh, I've been waiting for this one! Always loved the drums in this song. I mean, the song as a whole is great, that guitar part on the 12-string is just amazing, but the drums are what really brings it to that level of "this is a *really* great rock song." Ben is one of the most underrated drummers, for sure.
I remember 20 years ago, the first time I heard "The Greatest View" on the radio. The radio host knew you, he had interviewed you and he said he was proud of the musical evolution you had experienced. Then I heard "Without You" (on the same radio) and Diorama was the first Rock album I bought. Great memories of when I was a teenager and beginning my long journey of being a Rock geek .
Hearing all songs from Behind the Beat series and paying attention to every detail you mention just make these songs even better :) Thanks for the video, Ben! Wish you the best.
I love this and I hope these continue! Very underated drummer and one of the very best. This is so cool because this shows us the drumming perspective and techniques and also more depth for the overall song. This is a block of gold for any Siverchair fan. Rock on Ben, we appreciate you 🤟🤟
Huge appreciation for the insights into these songs Ben & the impact of the drums in them. Diorama has been my favourite album for the last 20 years, so this is a treat
The one thing I think everyone would love to see here is that at the end of your video production you insert a closing segment that showcases a 'Complete Playthrough'.
And the US Single Edit, cutting the structures so people could stomp to the song turned out so lame and ugly haha. Even the brass were cut. What an ugly ass record label LOL
The drum sound as a whole is fantastic ! Still great playing after all these years ;-) muscular memory is fascinating, isn't it? Thanks again Mr Gillies, it's always a pleasure to review these wonderful songs with you.
You’re technically so sophisticated but make it look easy. This song and the performance are pure pleasure. So satisfying for the ears. Never gets old.
It is always so amazing to see these behind the beat videos, I look forward to seeing them every time there’s a new one, it’s really cool and interesting watching and him telling and showing what he’s added on to the drums in these songs, and Silverchair is one of my favorite bands! Ben you are a extremely talented drummer! :)
Honestly couldn’t hear the song without those 5 beats in that transition. It’s perfect! Love listening to the breakdowns, reviews and new interpretations. Keep them coming!
What's really crazy is I played this song at a battle of the bands in my high school senior year at a battle of the bands, and have covered it like a thousand times since then, but I don't think I've ever thought of it as the 5/4 bar. I primarily play guitar(have the same platinum metallic prs as dan) but most of my official musical training is on drums so it isn't like I'm unfamiliar with changing time sigs. I think being focused on hitting the riff perfectly to the beat with the bass and other guitar player I didn't even notice an extra beat. Love it! Thanks Ben!
The best one yet. Keep doing these. As a pro musician growing up with your music since childhood it brings so much more to the experience. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
As always I love these thank you for making them, this is from my favourite Silverchair album, I love the drum track being up a bit it really helps pick out what you’re doing. Thanks again much love from the uk
This song hit me like a punch in the face when you guys first played it live (at the arias I think?) and I immediately bought the single, bought the album and its been my FAV silverchair album forever!! a Adore your drumming in this and the more complicated rock opera sound - it's so beautiful and holds up today! Seeing you play the first song that blew us away from it bring so much joy... thank you Ben!! Can't wait for more!
Amazing song. Great breakdown. It'd be cool if you could do the commentary from behind a kit so you can demonstrate the things you're talking about in isolation (the James Brown influence, the 5 beat fill etc.) Cheers for putting these out.
Great stuff and man this song holds up so well. Diorama was a high water mark for the band musically I think. So well balanced against what had come before and the sonic possibilities still ahead. This series is reminding me how solid Silverchair was in its songwriting and how powerful a three piece band can be. Cheers and thanks for sharing these insights from the drummers perspective!
@Ben Gillies - if you're up for a request, "Findaway" is right up there for Behind the Beat, if for no other reason to 1) make you have two sticks and 2) count it in guys it was one of my favourites from Frogstomp; I remember hearing a live version on Fox FM that had an extended Chris bass solo... have been searching for that recording for the best part of 20 years... there was a solid groove between Chris and Ben on that one, the snare sound is almost iconic and do I detect the trademark Frogstomp heel & toe kick drum?
0:30 I also have a hard time naming a sub-genre for Diorama, but it looks like "Art Rock" is the perfect term for this album, thanks Ben, another awesome video!
If you listen to Dan's solo stuff and compare that to Silverchair you'll quickly realise the difference a tight rhytm section makes. Drumming on Diorama is fuckin' amazing.
The way he plays the toms seems to have something like a Ringo kind of color, I've never noticed that until now. I understand Daniel not rejoining the band, but I'd love to see him talking about the creative process of those last two records, which are my Silverchair's favorites.
Awesome very inventive song! So good to see your references. Love this series of videos. Bring on more and more! My suggestions for next are 'Point of View', 'Spawn Again', 'Paint Pastel Princess', 'No Association' and 'Slave'.
I had stopped buying your albums the more commercial you guys got so around album thrree-ish.... so it's amazing that your producer and label asked you to make this song because its one of my favourites. I know labels can be annoying, but they got it right with this. Long live Silverchair the Rock band, great memories.
Live....you're the hardest hitter I've seen... and I've seen tons of shows since 95....but your energy while playing was almost too much to handle...I knew the show in Montreal would be 🔥 cus you guys had just done intimate and interactive at much music a day or 2 before...no one recognized you with a shaved head but I did...my 5 yr old son has been taking drum lessons for a year ....freak is one of his jams...thanks for inspiring!
Always learning about composition here whit you. Everything has a meaning and taht's why it works maybe. I'm really hyped for Tuna because it's maybe the most complex song Silverchair has to me.
This is actually my favourite track drum wise. The choice to hit the kick with the rhythm guitar was perfect. It’s actually the easiest for me to play along to (I’m not a professional drummer. I do everything else just about. But not drums) I also want to say, not drum related. The backup vocals on this song might be my favourite on any Silverchair song as well.
Another sick video, Ben! Always loved the swing the chorus had. Almost has a big band element to it, but from a heavier rock background. +1 on the triplet fills too 👌🏻 Something I always love in your drumming! Great stuff, man 🤙🏻
Always enjoy these uploads, your new drum track over the song made it sound more harder rock...if that A&R rep heard this back then he probably would have jizzed himself. I remember when Diorama came out and the jerkoff music critics criticized you guys for still having a grungey/hard rock sound, yet that's all the record company wanted from you guys...damned if you do, damned if you don't. Diorama is still my fave Aussie album and in my top 20 albums of all time, it really didn't get the global praise it deserved yet has aged incredibly well. Onya mate, keep up the good work.
@@kylohepburn I’ve been listening to “Ramble” and “Asylum” lately .. love all their stuff ~ we are so blessed to have had them together as a band .. Chris is awesome too ..
such a shame with the direction the band went with. got too mainstream, lost its edge. think deep down, they didn’t want to go down that path. the pay cheques certainly help but. we’ll always have the first 3 albums! emotion sickness is essential silverchair for me 🤘🏼
Diorama was completely different and special to me, I went back in time here. Thank you Ben!!
Hearing Ben talking about the drum lines, one can notice how he was working hard to always become a better drummer.

The best Silverchair album imo. Legendary.
I love all Silverchair album but to me Diorama is peak Silverchair.
It blows me away to know this album is 20 years old now...it honestly doesn't feel like it was that long ago. I really can't put into words how special Diorama was to me back then and still is to this day. It doesn't age. I listened to this album everyday, multiple times a day for 2 years straight.
Same. I still think Tuna is an revolutionary song...

Gotta download these. To get the chance to see our favourite Silverchair songs be broken down and replayed by one of the band is brilliant.
Ben you are criminally underrated drummer. Thank you for this series. I truly enjoy this

Diorama is a masterpiece, Oz rocks Pet Sounds
What a cool way to put it: It's the song that takes our hand to introduce us to the Diorama universe. And it worked flawlessly.
And the US Single Edit, cutting the structures so people could stomp to the song turned out so lame and ugly haha. Even the brass were cut. What an ugly ass record label LOL
These videos are highly underrated! Please keep making this Behind The Beat series! Waiting for Petrol & Chlorine! Thanks Ben! Keep up the good work!

Thanks again Mr Gillies, it's always a pleasure to review these wonderful songs with you.
I don’t think I could get sick of these videos if I tried… such a pleasure being shown “under the hood” by the manufacturer himself 🤘
You’re technically so sophisticated but make it look easy. This song and the performance are pure pleasure. So satisfying for the ears. Never gets old.
I love the behind the beat videos. I love silverchair and this is just giving me a better understanding of the music and i thank you for that ben

That was awesome, thanks Ben!! Has made me appreciate how much you are working the drum kit in this song, and how it interplays with the guitar riff.
Honestly couldn’t hear the song without those 5 beats in that transition. It’s perfect! Love listening to the breakdowns, reviews and new interpretations. Keep them coming!
Such a great explanation of feeling the music as a whole piece, and the drums sound killa

If Diorama included Hollywood as its lead single, it would’ve helped with American radio

Whoever’s recording these Behind the Beat series is pulling a thick drum sound. Sounds mint. You bloody love your ghost notes these day, eh? 😂

Um dos melhores bateristas do mundo na minha opinião.
Ainda sonho com o retorno da banda, pq enquanto há vida, há esperança!!!!
What a fenomenaal modern bonham-esk sounding drum kit❤️
Would love to see acid rain
Awesome 😎
I have no musical talent. I don't know what Ben's talking about or how to follow beats. I just like listening to the music and watching Ben.
Diorama is a masterpiece... I love this album! Ben, which cymbal did you use for the Diorama recordings? Cheers! 🤘
Mostly Sabian HH stuff + the amazing Radia crash (that’s no longer in production 😒) 😃
I’d love to see the behind the beat for Trash or Spawn!
Brilliant. Best feel in rock... art rock... etc... haha
