Rough Water Kayaking on the Waitukubuli Sea Trail in Dominica

- The great thing about the Waitukubuli Sea Trail (the Caribbean's first and only Sea Kayaking Trail) is that it offers great paddling for all skill levels. Beginners can stick to sheltered and calm water, but if you want to push your limits a little, you can easily find some rough conditions to paddle. In this video, I'm joined by the crew from the Soufriere Outdoor Centre for a paddle the rough water that surrounds Scotts Head - a peninsula in the southwest corner of Dominica.
Soufriere Outdoor Centre thanks Chev Dixon, Director of the Hudson River Riders, who paddled with them for a month and collaborated to start a youth kayaking program in Soufriere. Chev is an avid kayaker whose passion for paddling is contagious. He has opened the doors to thousands of youth to sea kayaking and the outdoors by creating access to the sport, especially youth of color. He has been an inspiration to many youths in Dominica.

Love the Paddle TV series, it just keeps getting better.
@@keithmoriyama5421 I think these won some awards! Great story telling
What an outstanding place to paddle! And seeing the pure joy on the faces of the young lads is so awesome to see, especially when they got into the exposed Atlantic side. They will be amazing ambassadors for the paddle tourism industry in Dominica and I'd love to visit one day; thanks for bringing us along for the ride! 😎
Glad you enjoyed it James! It was really cool to see them so excited about paddling.
Glad you enjoyed the video! A few of those kids are guides now!
@@mrwes19 That is so awesome to hear!
Great footage, a pleasure to watch. The outfitter has obviously invested well into gear and equipment, more importantly the guides - nice to see.
Enjoy your story telling. Adding Dominica to the bucket list.
Awesome, glad the video inspired you. Let us know when you are ready 😎
Definitely try and make it! It’s truly the hidden gem in the Caribbean. We offer 6 day tours or can outfit qualified paddlers!
What stunning views! Snorkeling to cool off after paddling looks like the perfect combination of activities. I love that there is a training program for the local youth; everyone looked like they were having a blast.
@@brianne9 it’s really the ideal setting for warm water paddling! The local culture makes it even that much better!
My wife and I learned to paddle in the Pacific NW. This location has just made our bucket list of places to go. It has the perfect combination of kayaking and snorkeling.
It sure does!!
It is a true gem with so many incredible places to paddle and snorkel 🤿
Looks like a fun area for padling sea kayak.
Yesterday i was out on an evening tour on the swedish weast coast. Its been many months of cold weather and finally i got just a little bit of warmth. Low wind and not so cold air 😁
This place looks like a great place to experience for someone like me who most gets cold weather. And also other types of waves than what i’m used to😃
You'd love it! Can't wait to paddle your Swedish waters one of these days as well!
Add Dominica to your bucket list! Great paddling destination during the winter months!
Absolutely awesome!
Glad you liked it! 💙
That is so awesome! I want to go paddle with them!
We are ready! Ready like Freddy!
I grew up in castle Bruce, when I visit im def coming to get lessons 💪🏽💪🏽
Looking out for you!
Sure looks beautiful
It’s Gorgeous! Try and visit one day
Omg this trip looked so amazing. I’d love to bring a paddle board there and experience that. Just wow. How’s the camping there?
Good question about the camping... I would send an email to the folks at Soufriere Outdoor Centre, as I can't answer that one.
Camping isn’t an option on most beaches but there are some amazing accommodations in off the beaten track communities with truly authentic experiences!
Omg beautiful
Magic! How does the Trak go in rough weather on crossings? I've got one, and love it, hard-shell friends say a skin-on-frame will be too slow for something like a Bass Strait crossing (longest day 70 km in open sea) and a potential liability. What do you think? :)
Hey Patrick Bass Strait is all about how you pick the crossing days. It’s not your ability to do distance so much as your ability to handle rough water. What speed do you do loaded up with 50ish kg? The slower you go the more risk you are exposed to if the weather change from forecast, which it does. It’s Bass Strait. As there was only 2 of us we set our wind limit at 15 knots, advice from others was that if there is enough energy to get to 20knt then it can pretty easily go to 40knt winds.
We took 9.5 hours from Winter Cove to Royden. First 45km took 5 hours, then had to fight the sweep because of tides around the north end of Flinders. You really want a boat that can perform well in a wide variety of conditions. We had swells between 2 to 3m most crossings, with 4m for a few hours just before Erith. All cross swells and cross winds. Periods usually about 7sec it was a lot steeper than our usual conditions off Newcastle.
Also think about how it will handle surf landings loaded. Winter Cove faces open to the serious Pacific. We landed in about 1.5m surf because we needed to leave the next day to avoid an 8 day bad weather period. Was a bit hairy in my Audax, bow dug in and I surfed in sideways. My load was 55kg but could have dropped 10 by going back to 15l of water. But you never know on an expedition.
Happy to chat more if you want, was a bloody fantastic trip. Doing it again around Xmas 24
Hey!
Hi 😁
Did you see the 60 Minutes episode on the Dominica sperm wales this past Sunday?
No! Man... Seeing whales would have been icing on the cake!
Epic place to visit! The first Sperm Whale Reserve in the world!
Anyway a Canadian can live there? Lol
Ha!
Come on down!
