Mike Rowe & Scott Mann: NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE YOU | The Way I Heard It

- The former U.S. Army Green Beret, NYT bestselling author, leadership consultant, and perennial storyteller talks about the division and tribal behavior that permeates our country now, the death of honor, shame, and consequence, and why Alexis de Tocqueville was right when he observed that America succeeds because she puts the individual ahead of the collective.

Mike, I am a psychiatrist who has been in private practice for about forty years. I thoroughly enjoyed your conversation with Scott Mann. As I finished, I was filled with hope and optimism about our country and the world. I am going to encourage everyone to watch this. Thank you. 1:16:03
We have also allowed the idea of representative government to fool us into thinking that we are no longer required to exercise our obligations of citizenship and ensure we're electing GOOD representatives.
The problem for me,is I know you better than you know me. At 73, building a farm in northern WI,friends and social connection are not easy…..but “sharing” time with you or Rogan or Tucker is easy and comfortable. It is also only one way and not enough, but here I am. Appreciate our one sided relationship
America is NOT a liberal democracy, She was founded upon the principal's of a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.. I love your new show Mike, thanks so much, all your guests are wonderful. And thank you Mr. Mann for your service. I definitely agree with you and would like you to be a returning guest.
Did you actually watch the video? Accept that you don't understand what they meant by "liberal democracy." Thomas Jefferson might want to have a word with you.
The liberal democracy referenced was the belief that individuals have property rights and free speech. It is classical liberalism. Conservatives nowadays are classic liberals while progressives are the authoritarian radicals.
Not the Fox News vs MSNBC “liberal”, but the more political science meaning if the term. …..
“Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property and equality before the law”.
A wood shop customer of mine teaches long form composition at the local college. He tells me that the latest generation of students do not read long form thus have no no idea how to write anything beyond a few pages. Character development, conflict creation followed by resolution, and the connecting all loose ends simply goes over their heads.
My family still gathers for Sunday family dinner. No phones, no tv, no music. Same when we are out to dinner - no phones at the table.
Scott Mann....a great American filled with great truth. If we are to pull ourselves out of this cultural morass that we're in, it will be because men like you will never give up on the values and virtues that made America the greatest experiment in republican democracy that the world has ever seen. ...."that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth". Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg, 1863
Man as an afghan vet I really appreciate this approach on this idea
How was anyone in Afghanistan a threat to Our Constitution? How was anyone in Afghanistan even a threat to the country? I’m not aware of any intercontinental capability.
Mike says things so eloquently, like "crap the bed" whereas me,myself and I would simply throw a "shit the bed"out there ..Man,that Mike is so smooth...
Both phrases are eloquent…one is smoother!
I am the product of a mom who was a WAC and a career Army Sargeant. I grew up knowing accountability in every step I took being a military dependent living in the US and in Europe. Dad was there to defend our country and we were the support crew and to be on our best behavior or the whole family was affected. I feel that accountability has been with me as an adult, a mom and in my career as a software developer. I appreciate the real people you interview. They seem so relatable. Thank you!
Love the honesty of your interviews Mike. The current media is so untrustworthy and appears to be pushing some kind of agenda to undermind humanity.
I could listen to this gentleman talk for hours. Please bring him back soon! I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his service to our country 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I can always spot a Vet who’s seen serious action. The eyes have it. Can’t hide it. My heart goes out to you and those who suffered with you
My next door neighbor has those eyes. He has been throw alot of crap in combat
We lived in the city just north of Camp Pendleton Marine Base in CA for 50 yrs. I taught children of Marines; the city respected and celebrated the young men and women on the base. We appreciated their sacrifices and service. My Rotary Club was actively involved with support for Marine families. am looking forward to reading Scott Mann's book.
Thanks for your contribution.

This was very moving. When he talked about his dad teaching him to "leave footprints" brought me to tears, and also caused me to wonder if I've been able to do the same thing. Thank you, Scott Mann, for your service to our country, and the work you continue to do. 💪🦅🇺🇲❤️
With a bright minded wordsmith like Mike Rowe its the syncronisity of a live interview in studio that makes these shows resonate amongst us (mere mortals).
Aussie Jeff Moore
Thankful to be of the mindset that sees the perspective of both of these awesome men. Our beautiful country is being subverted from within. I have hope that we can right the ship but I'm not going to kid myself in thinking that at some point it will not take violence. "Look around and fix what you can. Stand up and be a man."
We also need to teach our sons to be men. Lead by example
The topic of NO SHAME, and the debacle in Afghanistan..."not one star was left on the table"! He was absolutely correct! No one took responsibility for this! Someone should have fallen on their sword over this mess.
Mike, I am a disabled vet. Your guest tonight was so spot on, it’s ridiculous! The level of hate that has increased in the United States since social media became more popular, I believe is the biggest culprit.
im from the north and the hate seems to be more in the south? everyone wants to live without the stresses to survive.....they want to easy of a life
I do agree...social media really has become the decline of civilization
Remember it’s not one side hates the other more, it’s descending in lockstep, far better to love thy neighbor, you’d be surprised how much a left leaning individual will respect a person on the right, I think the right should lead us out of this mess by being calm cool and collected. Not reactionary to the bitchy lefty types.
It was not social media.. it was the program which declined mental hospital funding in 2020, and the 2008 president program to give every person a smartphone with unlimited service, including a 2nd if the first one breaks.
cell phones are given to literal people who are mentally on many different synthetic hormones, and not given hospital treatment..
22years of service here. Thank You, You said what I have been saying, no stars dropped! What a lack of character and integrity.
Another excellent conversation with an intelligent guest. Thank you both.
"Most Veterans are willing to die for their country, but they don't know how to live for it." That quote hit me me hard as an 8 year VET. My wife a civilian is my new meaning to life, and someone to die for after the military.
Love the show Mike, and thanks Scott Mann
You didn’t swear to “die for the country”. Please tell everyone what you swore to do and then explain how you failed to do so.
@@Hittius “I, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
You are right we did not swear to die for our country in the military. We swore to Protect and Defend for our rights. In the past sacrifices had to be made including dying, and nobody what's to die it's what happens when the opposite party becomes violent, derange, and lawless.
Now that I have a family to take care of. I now have the responsibility to protect their Constitutional rights from foreign or domestic enemies as a civilian. If somehow I die while fighting to protecting my family and Country so be it!
@@hajunom1392 If you had honored your oath in the first place,it is conceivable that the entire country, including your family, would not have to have their rights defended. Doesn’t anyone get this? The blind allegiance to the domestic enemies of the Constitution is the underlying problem. It has been for over a century. After WW1, nobody should have clambered to serve in the military, they should have made sure there was never another world war. FDR purposely violated treaties, this is a fact. After the Great Depression the country should have rallied against the government to ensure they don’t screw up again, there was no intercontinental capability at that time. Instead,it was more blind allegiance to the government due to very convincing propaganda. The government is the problem, you served the government, you were complicit. I don’t question your skills or dedication,I question who you are willing to use them for. The Republic has a doomed if the federal government isn’t set straight. Your beloved military has been diluted by your former handlers due to lowered standards. Feminism and wokeism, both government sanctioned. And none of you do anything about it! You simply adapt and now say ,”the brave men and women”, soon to be changed to whatever descriptors will come next. We the People run this show,if the elected officials don’t abide by the Bill of Rights then they should be removed and held accountable. Not by waiting for the next election cycle,THEY HAVE BROKEN THE LAW,IT IS THE DUTY OF THE MILITARY TO REMOVE THEM,INCARCERATE THEM AND TRY THEM!!! If a civilian breaks federal law, that’s what happens ,it is not the same for the overreaching federal government,THAT’S A PROBLEM DON’T YOU THINK?!!?? That’s the epitome of tyranny. The military is perfectly positioned and trained to do this yet the cycle continues. The Republic is doomed thanks to you. Good luck.
@@hajunom1392 If you honored your oath in the first place you wouldn’t have to defend their rights now. Get it? You were complicit.
@@Hittius I don't understand? Please Elaborate?
Unfortunately, we currently honor the shameful and shame the honorable.
“The speaker doesn’t get to decide what’s motivational.”
👏👏👏
I can only say this one way. DAMN THAT IS A WONDERFUL SHARING OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE . Couldn’t stop it. Had to hear every word. Thank you. 🇺🇸
About 3:46: Smart people are realizing that the best connection is personal and not digital. But us Boomers don't know anything because we are old folks...
I usually don't watch stuff like this. But, I couldn't stop!! I agree, I am seeing it in my grandchildren and it scares me. I see it in my work environment. Why employers are having a hard time getting good workers. I love the bird scenario! That is what is happening in our society! Exactly!
Thank you, Mike Rowe, for mobilizing your public persona to a civic advocate for demoracy. It's much more than I thought I'd see from you.
You are so right, Mike! Honesty from the top instead of deception and lies
There is strength in humility.
United we stand , divided we fall.
This phrase was spoken at the beginning of the American revolution.
Civics, and American history is not being taught, or being rewritten with lies.
It is a good idea to get back to the basics .
Mike thanks for sharing your passion and great people in the community.
Along the lines of polarization of the country, I lot a 20 year old friend, I consider family, over Mr T getting elected. Sad fact people today cannot discuss opposing views. I see this as part of everyone wins a trophy mentality.
My grandfather who grew up through the great depression, stated the same thing as the book title. No one is coming to save you. Make a decision and take action. Minimal education but the smartest person in my life.
“Taking a bite of the shit sandwich when it’s your turn”. Mike you sure know how to turn a phrase. A perfect analogy for life as it really is.
Another fantastic chat ! Thanks for allowing us to eavesdrop, once again.
I agree with everything said by Mike and the guest. I was in the US Navy from 1978-1982. I have read and thought A LOT about WWI, WWII , Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. In my humble opinion, tge United States has not properly fought, and won, a war .... since WWII. You go in with overwhelming force, kick your enemy's ass, and make sure they understand that behavior that led you to begin this war is unacceptable. You need to never do that again, do you understand? Now .... let us help you get back on your feet, and your economy back on track. Let's restructure your government to be similar to other free countries around the world, so you do not become a dictatorship.
I pray everyday. Morning work commute is, Help me to be Confident, Considerate, Respectful and Understanding, Patient and Positive, Encouraging and Motivating. In JESUS Name I pray. Thank you
Great episode! Need to get Scott's day on the show to talk about the American Chesnut, "Leaving a trail", etc.
Two beautiful minds with the ability to articulate! Gives hope.
The reason that the leaders didnt say they don't know what to do, is because it was their original agenda to begin with. I love all the stories of individual ideas how we have been able to help, equip and lead in such crazy and historic ways around the world. Thank you Mike for your content. I never fail to learn something new from your interviews. Please don't stop doing what you do. Love this.
What a fantastic interview, thank you so much for what you are doing! The general population needs to hear more of this kind of wisdom!
I am a veteran from the 60s, and listening to this discussion is so real to my understanding and real world interests in the world around us. Saving this for anybody that I think needs to hear it. It will be very influential for others in my sphere. Thank you.
What an incredible interview! I want both my sons to attend his training and I will be buying them and my husband the books. So much to learn here that I will be listening to this podcast again and taking notes just so I can find out how to be a better storyteller to help influence from the bottom up.
I could listen to you both all day! Thanks for the great information & laughs. 🇺🇸🕊️❤️
Mr. Rowe, this is an amazing episode. I feel smarter for just listening. Thank you.
What an extraordinary human being. Listening to this man makes me feel more hopeful for our species. Great interview!
Love the restoration of the chestnut trees . Live in Virginia.
Such an awesome communication of what’s happening in our Low Trust World.
Thank you both for your continued dedication to our Human Race!

Absolutely fantastic both of you. Thank you 😊 we need more men like yourselves.
My uncle was a Green Beret. in the Army from '64 to retirement. Did four tours. He lied about his age and got in at 16 years old. He didn't
talk much, as usual. He was lost in the jungle for months once, his entire platoon was killed. We already thought he was gone too when he showed up. He was sent up ahead alone to find the enemy position, when the platoon was targeted. He died from the Agent Orange sudden multitude of cancers.
Sorry for your loss and his suffering.
Scott you were amazing on Shawn Ryan and I loved you here as well! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇺🇸
As I, a 77 year old listened to Scott talk about the majority being obsessed with their cell phone,,, I've never heard things put quite like that but I 100% agree. I've wondered WHY it PISSES ME OFF to look around a room, or folks standing line at the grocery store checkout,, ALMOST ALL ARE LOOKING at their phones. Now I understand,, but YES,, it still pisses me off. I think back only a few years and remember people making eye contact, talking, shaking a hand now and then. Those things, those interactions between human beings are disappearing at an alarming rate. I wonder HOW DID WE GET BY IN THE 70'S, the 80'S AND 90'S when social media did not exist? HOW?
Take off your rose colored glasses. 😉 Everybody was just as fake and mean back then as we are today. The difference is we can communicate anonymously without holding back and insult each other without repercussion. Well at least we think there is no repercussion. The loneliness epidemic is the price we are paying. For instance, when Facebook became popular I was surprised to find out how extreme right and racist my family is. It made me take a step back and think differently about the people I know. I think we’ve all gone through something similar. So if we hear a dog whistle a person subscribes to we dismiss them without much thought.
I'm a farmer, but that's the kind of person who can mold someone into something stronger. Huge respect, awesome talk!
I disagree. Having grown up farming, the fields, the animals and the seasons all molded a character that can't be replicated in any form of media.
My gosh! What a interesting and didactic conversation between two educated people about how tenuous and pivotal 'waking up' our society must be
I ended up pausing this podcast and watching Lawrence of Arabia to know exactly what Mike was talking about. Like you said we need to hear a lot of the stories from us Veterans to know what we went through in the name of Freedom or building Democracy across the world.
Another great podcast Chuck n Mike proves again that people just need to communicate, step up, & get it done. All the while not relying on someone else to do it for you. I mean this I love you guys fer what ur doin keep it up as it helps restore my faith in humanity.
I spent 2 years in Afghanistan, and the whole time I kept saying to myself, "Please just let me do enough so my younger brother doesn't have to come here." Now I've been out for a number of years and have two kids, and all I can think is that nothing I could have done was ever going to be enough to prevent my sons from potentially having to go back there when they grow up. It pains me everyday.
I'm going to watch that Ted talk and share as much as I can. Saving the indigenous plants is very important! Great lesson that crosses over many subjects.
The Green Berets might save our country.
Gladys Cooper "It's strange that we've never read of this in the newspapers."
Sergeant Muldoon "Well...that's newspapers for you, ma'am. You could fill volumes with what you don't read in them."
One of my favorite parts of the 1968 movie the Green Berets. ;-)
I love beginning to end of this video. "Leaving tracks" has become my purpose the last handful of years. On the surface, my YT channel is to educate people to grow food in inhospitable Florida. But deeper, I want my grandchildren, to great-grands, and so on, know ME. It's my version of a legacy in wet cement that will harden. Thank you gentlemen.
There is a respectable and needed place for officers. As an NCO, the reason we are also valuable is because we relate to all working class folks. Farmers, framers and family guys.
Amazing insights! Thank you Mike & Scott!
What a wonderful episode. Much to think about and remember to do. The months ahead will be challenging but insights here give a little comfort and a bit of sage advice.
Respect to you both 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
"Where's that reverse boot camp?"
What a great articulation for what we need as a nation.
From actual military vets to "social justice warriors".
It's time to lay down the "arms", and learn to live for the fellow man.
Thanks for your perspective and understanding.
That was a pleasure to listen to. Thank you.
Love this conversation……😊
The best force "multi-plyers" on the planet.
I agree with everything you’ve said so far, and I thank you for saying it! Love from Texas ❤
Loved this interaction!! Great info.
Major Mann is how I first met him in Group. Awesome person.
“And keep your pistols”…that was an interesting thing to say.
Thanks for the interview, I enjoyed it!
My nephew was in the service at that time - I really want to see this play.
Thank you Mike, this was a great interview. I really enjoyed the interview with Scott Mann.
Wow. That took me on a gut wrenching ride. Your intuition that we are on the bring of a "revival" pulled me "a bit" up out the pit of despair. Looking forward to the book and in the meantime digging deeper into any of your other content.

Sounds like evil incarnate. Your description is not good.
@@denroy3 well just like Mattis, I could not care less about your opinion. Have a good day.

Excelent story of leadership!
Agreed. Great conversation!
Amazing. Thank y’all
My father talked about the American Chestnut trees, and how he remembered them before they were wiped out. he talked about the groups involved in trying to reestablish the tree.
I think the biggest thing that stands out to me is how wars eventually end. No war, that I know of, has ended by killing every single person on the other side. It ends with people talking. I feel like humanity is progressing beyond large scale kinetic warfare. It’s only our geriatric leadership that feels that’s how differences are still resolved or need it to cover their ineptitude to maintain their power.
66 years old and worked physically all my life (roofer, state trooper, house repair). I also have a masters and still teach adjunct at universities. Yes, everything you say is correct. However, it all start during the Reagan administration when he reformed tax laws 1986. It transferred all tax burden to the working class. The wealthy went from paying 70% over $1M to 15-27% in taxes. It started the 40 year snowball effect. So sad…I’m still working a roof today at 66.
Story telling is why we enjoy movies. No wonder we haven’t had many good movies lately.
Another incredible interview. Thank you

what a great interview . not that mike has many bad ones
How Many Tears Have Fallen
Tears so many have fallen
Through the years for the Greatest Nation ever
Tears for life liberty the pursuit of happiness
For a free world
Tears for the sons and daughters that never returned home
Warrior soldiers all
Tears wiped from the cheeks of so many wives
Shed by the children with only faint memories
Tears behind the mother's veil
On father's handkerchief
Tears at the base of the white stone
That wet the flowers and flags
Tears at the sound of taps played in the distance
For the memories of buddies
Tears at the sight and sound of dog tags boots
Empty
Tears when the aircraft flyover
Stars shining brightly
Tears as the ships sail
Anchors aweigh
Tears for those that patrol
Guard the dark nights alone
Tears at roll call
With no reply to a name called
How many tears have fallen

whenever i hear "The Churn" i think of the Expanse, but it all to me is the same stuff. I am so thankful that there are people like this out in our world, trying to show people how to change things for America's betterment.
This lord , please, more of this
Mike, I've been watching your content pretty much my whole life, starting with Dirty Jobs. Thank you for promoting individual success and individual accountability, as you have both directly and indirectly influenced me to make my life better one step at a time.
So good
"Over indexed in individualism". I can point to specific instances over the last 40ys where one particular party has sold their brand on the idea that YOU shouldn't told what to do by THEM. No society, only individualism.
The point of American individualism vs collectivism -- the new thing that uniquely developed here -- is NOT that society is to consist only of individuals -- there's no such thing as that -- but that the GOVERNMENT, legtimately, should only be allowed to see and deal with individuals. The government should NOT see "groups" at all. It should not speak of and write laws and regulations for groups. It should not reward, punish, promote, or specially protect groups. Any legitimate duty of the state is discharged by equally protecting the rights of indviduals AS individuals. Everything beyond that is creating special privileges for special people and is illegitimate.
I worked for a Green Beret. You'd never know it. He didn't brag about it. Never talked about it.
Very different from the Navy group.
@@tomwickham8938 beat me to it.
Sounds wrong when you look back in time and its multiple decades, you're like "....what? That cant be right.....?"
It was a time when we told great stories in song, and you knew all the words. Music today is shooting, cussing, grunting and screwing. No lessons to be learned, no challenges to be had, no personal triumphs to rally behind. We have to embolden the younger generation to develop standards to aspire to.
