- A sore hip didn't bother Zach Lindsey too much. As an active student athlete, a few aches and pains were just a part of the game. But when three weeks of ice and ibuprofen didn't help, it was time to see the doctor. In this Children's Channel video podcast, Zach and his mom, Sue, share the story of how some timely help from the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Akron Children's Hospital saved a lifetime a leg problems.
His story is the same as my story, I didn't know there were other people out there like me.
aleeyahward me to
me either I just had my surgery on the 14th
same for me
same SCFE is no joke
same
I have this in my left hip. Happened when I was 12 and I'm 17 now and have had 5 surgeries. It was pretty severe. I hate not being able to do as much stuff and being self conscious about it all the time, especially cause I have a limp now and people always ask me about it. Some people don't understand how much Scfe affects you because they aren't going through it.
can i ask, I have a limp but little pain sometimes a sharp pain in my hip or knee and have a limp in my walk with a clicking sound everytime I limp. Do you suppose I have it or may it be something else, only because I know that you have had it
Bethany Mcteare seek medical help right away because that would happen to me
i have been to the doctors once and they said they didn't know so have sent me to another one to see on Monday but they think its inflamed muscles and will need steroid injections but that only concerns me because I know it is easily misdiagnosed by people who know nothing about it
Bethany Mcteare oh
Alyssa Cheek hi my names masen and I have the same condition that u have and I was wondering will I ever be able to play soccer again because I love it so much and my surgery is in two days and I just wanted a second opinion
I just had surgery like this
Me too! Did you have a surgery somewhere in your thigh and got a screw in there!? Are you in a wheelchair!? Homeschooled!?
In 2011 i had this surgery done at the chlidrens in pittsburgh.(did not know i had it since the begining of 09) i had stage 4 chonic acute scfe i had a 80 percent chance of a hip replacement at the age of eleven. two years later i placed second in the state of pa for pa junior wrestling.I have had absolutely no problems with the hip and just shows that a person with scfe can do anything a normal person can do.
I had this surgery done back in 1987. I was one of the first in the UK to undergo this. I still remember the pain before surgery. My mum thought I was trying to get out of Physical Education at school, but it got so bad that I couldn't step up a small curb. Eventually I went to our GP who referred me to the hospital for x-rays. I remember it so clearly. I was in my school uniform because it was a morning appointment, and my mum was taking me straight back to school after. I had the x-rays, we were about to leave and we were called back. I was admitted straight away. Put on traction for 7 days and then underwent surgery to pin my right hip. Recovery was a lot longer back then also. I was in hospital for 3 months. I was wheeled round to the hospital school in my hospital bed every day. When I came out I was in a wheelchair for a while and then crutches. Things were getting better. I started with hydrotherapy and then physiotherapy. One day while at the hospital having physio, they got me to lay on my back and with one leg at a time, slide it outwards as far as I can and then back. Did it fine with the operated side. But when I tried to bring my good leg back in, I had the same excruciating pain... again. My surgeon came down to see me from his rounds and had me admitted that day. The same had happened to my good leg. So... same scenario over again.
18 months later I had both pins removed. Things have been ok. Have had pain over the years, but nowhere near as bad as it was. Unfortunately tho, I found out 2 years ago at the age of 37 that I have secondary arthritis in both hips due to the slipped bits. And degenerative osteoarthritis in both knees.
My son had surgery October 28th because of slipped capital femural epiphysis. He was 6 at the time. He limped for close to 5 weeks prior to his emergency surgery. I took him to an orthopedic doctor twice, his pediatrician, ER's. Nobody could tell me why my 6 year old was limping and in so much pain. Finally I had enough and took him to one of the best ER's around and they x ray'd his hip. We went to Nationwide Children's in Columbus and he had surgery that night. Doctor Julie Somara performed his surgery. Wonderful surgeon by the way. He wore a spica cast for 32 days and had to learn how to walk again. A little over 3 months later he's doing great. Walks a little funny is all. He gets his pins out in a couple days. 😁
Good morning. We're glad to hear it went so well!
Glad to hear you are back on your feet!
The same thing happened to me I'm from a town about 1 hour away from Columbus ohio. I had played football with this and as a lineman and linebacker I use a lot of leg work. The pain was unbearable. The doctors were very nice and I'm happy it's fixed I'm planing on getting back on the field my sophomore year.
I'm 44 years old. I was pinned at 13. Steer clear of full contact sports and running. You can do it. Just remember that what you do today can influence what you experience tomorrow. I took real good care of myself and I'm now living with arthritis. Never could get my flexibility back. You might be suited for a resurfacing at some point, but with current technology you want to avoid full hip replacement until after you are fifty. It is a long way off, but if you could only know this now instead of figuring out out then...
Take care of yourselves kids. Swimming, biking, and rowing are great for people like us!
Thanks much!
What did they say was the cause for the arthritis
Sorry to hear it. Hope it's doing better now.
Been there done that. It went unnoticed by doctors for 6 months. After many visits at the doctors they figured it out. Barely being able to walk for 2 months and then they figured out what it was and i was put in emergency room and had emergency surgery the morning after. So happy i got this done, one more month unnoticed and i’d not be able to walk anymore. I had a pretty severe case of this unfortnuantly and i still can’t play any sports since i’m not really capable to run. Hopped around on crothes for 3 months so i got pretty much upper body muscles so kinda happy about that lol. My upper arms, shoulders and chest is pretty brutally strong and big wich i’m quite happy about.
I had the same surgery when I was 11 years old. I'm now 61. My parents took me to our family Dr and he told them to take me to a bone specialist. Before I could see the specialist I fell down a small sand pile and could not get up. When I finally made it to the specialist, days later, he put up the X-rays and you could see that my thigh bone was completely separated from my hip bone. This was back in 1973, I was immediately taken to the hospital. I stayed there until Thanksgiving and went back in after Christmas to have same surgery ( pins put in joints) done to my other hip. The second surgery was easy because my bones were not damaged from a fall. The joints were not fully dislocated. I missed most of my first year of junior high school. But it was traumatic at first not knowing why I was in so much pain. And It was my first time having to walk from class to class. By the end of the day I was dragging my leg. I could barely make it to my bus to make it home. But it seems like things have gotten better since then.
At your age now of 61 ,Are you experiencing any pain or stiffness ? My doctor told me I could have arthritis when I get older .
Had my surgery at 11 years old. The best advise that my doctors gave me was to keep myself strong. Weight-lighting is a major component of my workouts. It helps with so much. Yes, we will have arthritis in the future but that’s inevitable. Do your best do not be afraid of playing competitive sports.
I had it when I was 11 aswell
Had mine between 11 and 12 too,
Yes I had mine when I was 12 . I try to keep working out and eating right
Good luck. Hope you are better soon.
I had this but I just got surgery it is absolutely devastating
Sergio Cavazos why ???
Hello all. I'm now age 31. I was 11 yrs old when I had my surgery on my left hip. I've had very minor problems through out the years. I have never been able to sit indian style, but other then that, it has given me no real intense pain after the fix. They watched my other leg for several years after, but all has been well. When I was 26yrs old I was diagnosed with Rhuematoid Arthritis and Lupus. I am mlt positive if these are or can be connected to the hip problem. Good luck to anyone who has had this surgery or meeds to get it. Recovery was a bit rough from what I remember, but my symptoms prior too were far worse. It seems like it's better to spot now a days. About 20 yrs ago, it took me walking with a severe limp and pain that prevented me from walking at all for 3 and a half yrs before they finally officially diagnosed me. Best of luck out there.
How was your recovery on mobility, eg. loss of internal rotation?
I'm a strength athlete, and i had surgery about 5-6 years ago, and i'm trying to rehabilitate the loss of internal rotation so i can squat properly.
@@Jovahkiiin hey have you seen any progress with your hip mobility? It's so hard for me to squat low and deep
Hope you are doing better now!
*I had this surgery at 11 and I have been living like i havent had it..I still workout but limited because my leg is pinned outward..I have a limp that is noticable but I have gotten use to it..I use a lift but it barely helps so I just limp it out..I have a difficult time going up stairs..arthritis has kicked all the way in now at 34 and my leg stiffs and it feels like its stick to my right leg..my right leg is carrying all my weight..I can only bend to my right..I cant do anything with my left..I am trying to shoot for disability now but I NEVER LET THIS STOP ME*
I'm gonna have the surgery tomorrow Thank you guys for your feedback on the surgery because it's gonna help me a lot
I hope everything went well. My child had this. He's recovered well.
I didnt know other people had the same surgery as me. I had the hip surgery on both hips and was on crutches for 6 weeks as well.
I had scfe a few months ago I was limping for a few weeks and playing softball while apparently my hip was broken, we finally went to the doctor and the took x-rays... I had same day emergency surgery.
I just got diagnosed with the same thing but over in England I think we call it a sufe, but it’s nice too hear other people stories and to know that you aren’t the only person out there who has this problem even three years after you posted the comment.
I found out I had this after 4 months of PAIN and I'm having surgery tomorrow..when I was watching this video, everything related to me.Lol I'm 13 btw
Sabrina Najera how do you feel now I had that same surgery last month
Same I went to the doctor went to school got pulled out again found out I'm having surgery the same day
Same but for me I had to wait a year
@@sergiocavazos1263 just had mine tidy
@@qlex999 hope u revover well👍👍

and i still have it i had my last surgeory this year
I had the same thing and I played basketball and I played through the pain and the doctors finally found it now its 2 months since the surgery and going in for the other side yay
Im so happy to know there is other people the same as me, im so nervous about this but this eased off some presure
i had the surgery this past summer and i’m still surprised that it put me in more pain 🤭😭
@@katherinelenz70 what did the doctors say
@@ryandolan1577 Well, I wasn’t able to walk properly (no assistance from a cane or crutches) from May to late August. Just recently I had these tight contractions around my hip, but I concluded that it was my scar tissue healing. That incident lasted a few days, and now I actually feel much better than before the surgery. I think the scar tissue healing was one of the final “breakthroughs” in my recovery process.
@@ryandolan1577 I always asked a lot of questions during my check-ups over then summer. Even if you think the question is dumb, ask; it doesn’t hurt.
I am so glad that this video is here as earlier tonight i was told by a doctor that i have SCFE and will have to undergo an operation where they will put pins in both my hips. This was really comforting as i will get the operation in a couple of weeks time and im just nervous and worried about the effects of it
Good luck with your procedure!
AkronChildrens Thank you
Had my surgery at 11 12 and was great until a accident at 16 when 1 pin bent and the other loosened so i had them removed and that left me with a long time of problems to this day, iam 38 and need a full hip replacement and have dysplasia and massive arthritis, be smart and safe and take care of your health it goes so fast.
I have had 4 surgery I've been going through this since summer or2013
I had this surgery as an emergency surgery the day I got my x-rays and was in the hospital for days recovering and learning how to use a wheelchair crutches and a walker and going through physical therapy I’ve had this surgery on both my hips one worse than the other
(pt 2) surgery was a bigger one that would completely fix it but this would be a 11 month recovery..the risk of the smaller one was it was a high risk of re injury and would involve a complete hip replacement which means no sports ever again..i decided to take the big one which he had never preformed and has only been preformed in the us 16 times...i was on crutches for 5 months..but keep ur head up zach that is a very good hospitle they really know how to take care of you..thank you dr. ritzman
i had surgery on valintines day and now i can run but a little pain now and then :)
HannahBanana how little my where you on crutches for
i got the surgery a few days ago so its better now
I have this right now I have to have surgery again I had 2
I hope you get well
When I first heart about this and the doctor told me "the child can no longer do activities like foot ball etc," I was very heart broken. All the boys in my primary school kicked around balls. Telling one that he can no longer do that is heart breaking. He was to watch his friends play and he cannot. I don't think people understand that this (sudden disability) isn't very easy for a child to take in.
You can play now
Im 16 5'11 and had it for several months playing through basketball games everything you said but the pain just got worse went to the doctor had an x-ray nothing. Played four basketball games and then my leg just went. Had to goto a couple doctors before i was told my femur fractured at the top my growth plate was fubar and a scfe. Its been a crazy year but everything came out well haha
I had this same problem and surgery
I have had it done on both sides
Oh and must I add I was like this for 8.5 months
I am still recovering and I had my op in December and have had three operations on both legs and I have massive scars I love sports too and I haven’t been able to do the in just under a year plus I was in hospital on Christmas Day
Sisters Life how do you feel now???
I have this condition. I'm going to have surgery.
i had surgery in august that was a big week but it was a lot bettr than getting a hip replacment
I got this i actually have to grt surgery tomorrow morning
this is what i had
This happened to me 1 year ago. Kind of the same story as me.
This happed to me but i was on crutches for 3 months! It was hell
I had the exact same thing happen to me back in 2003
How are you feeling today?
I was playing basketball then I started having pain and they told me it was a pulled hamstring but t I kept having pain after my recovery time so I went to Texas children's hospital and they told me I had a SCFE and I had emergency surgery the next day recovery was pretty easy for me. Six months pass and then I'm in pain and I go back to the hospital and they tell me your growth plate is fine everything is normal except my femur was slamming into my bone Everytime I walk so three weeks pass and it's time for me to have another surgery to put an artificial cushion there. My surgery was eight hours and they took my screw out from my SCFE and they said I had major arthritis so they poked holes in my cartilage. So here we are three weeks later and I'm sitting here wrapped in Ace bandages and looking a SCFE surgeries and holding my screw. This comment was to tell you even though things happen you can get through it even though I can never play softball or basketball again I still stay positive knowing what the future holds may be great. So stay positive even though it may seem hard you can make it through. Hope you guys have a nice day and a very happy new year
im 21 i had the surgery when i was 13 and it has not hurt since then up untill i started playing football with my younger brother its been killing me since then
Good luck. Hope you'll be running again soon!
I had a surgery like this on October 1st 2019 I played sports and when my coach told me to run I could barley and I walked with my foot out
i had the same thing my doctor couldn't figure it out for a while, was yours stable or unstable. stable being able to walk on it or unstable being that you cant walk on it at all, and do you have 1 screw or multiple screw
Good job Zach!!
Bui hey, how come Max didn"t get to be in the video???
I have the same i fell in soccer mow im going to surgery tomorrow and im really scared but mine is on one leg
Believe it or not I got this too!
i just had a surgery like this this last summer hahah. i couldn’t walk 10 weeks it was so bad
currently my hip feels pretty much the same as they described as the start and I'm really hoping it doesn't turn out to be something like this 😖
I fell over when I was 13 caused severe scfe, got both hips pinned then when I was 16 I had my left hip replaced gave ne a whole new lease of life, going through the rest of high-school was hard due to not being able to do sport with friends, but I can still do swimming and cycling which isn't too bad, probably gonna need a new hip replacement in the future due to how young I am, this condition isn't published enough and parents are not made aware of the risks sadly, my doctor mistook the pain I was having for a football sprain injury, 2 months later I fell and had to get my hips pinned can all change so fast
I was worried about my son. He was limping and sat funny. Pcp said it was growing pains for 2 yrs. I finally took to an ortho doc. Glad I did. We just got back from surgery this morning at LeBonheur children’s hospital. He now has 4 screws. Btw. He will be 15 in Nov
I had both hips as well
I was out for a year with this it was tough but now I'm playing bball again but it sometimes gets sore
I can relate to this cuz I had surgery and I thought that I was the only one
I’m having my surgery this week. After a year of pain and physical therapy thinking that my hips were out of alignment we found out that I had this today. I’ve never had surgery before, wish me luck 😳
Good luck!
@@AkronChildrens had the surgery, feeling so much better! I get to start walking on Wednesday. There was zero pain after the surgery.
Hi I’m 21 years of age and I really bad anxiety of what’s going to happen in the future.
I’ve had a Sciffy in both my hips. And I’m about to have surgery again because one of my screws in my hips got fractured
I had the surgery last year in April on my left hip, and now my right hip is starting to get a the same symptoms as well. is it possible that I could be getting scfe on the right hip?
me too
Hi I’m 21 years of age and I really bad anxiety of what’s going to happen in the future. Is it guaranteed I’m going to have arthritis young when I don’t have no pain at all in my hips since getting it pinned ?
i am freakin pissed. today was our first track meet and in the 100 m dash, my hip popped 3 times and i fell and rolled (over the finish line thankfully) i got first still, however i am off the track team for this year and for soccer, which our tournament is this week, i am also out for the rest. i am pissed as hell
I have this but I got the worst case I’m about to have my 11th surgery for a hip replacement
I got this in both legs after 6 months of pain... They could never find it slip during the X-Rays and ultrasounds and blood tests and poking and prodding. Sometimes it would hurt so bad I could not get up. Now I walk with a permanent limp. It sucks that they couldn't find quicker
Borbor Ogiesoba same bro... got it in another leg now.. i wanna kill myself
i had to go through 7 months of pain before anybody realized i had SCFE... that was a pain in the hip
U guys saying u can still play sports sound young. Hopefully u won't face the arthritis as u r in ur 20's, 30's, 40's. I'm 31 have had kids, and pins in both hips taken out when I was 26 (late) now have arthritis lots of pain can NOT run or jump. At least I can walk and stuff. Very grateful for that.
What surgery did you have
i have this....im a 18 year old girl....i was having pain for years...always seemed to be around the time of new shoes or something to that affect. my knee swelled they thought i had water on the knee. went to an orthopedic dr. i was told if i walked on my leg one more time i could lose the leg. my hip was that bad off. they put me on cruches and a week later i was having surgery. they took screw out 4 years later it was healing but not well. i now can flip my leg compleatly backwards.
meh i had this 3 years ago.........wheel chair for 6 weeks and only physical activity for a year was walking........shitty thing is i feel it happening again with the pins
Ayyyy this happened to me when I was 12 nice. Never able to do the splits again so sucked to be a dancer lmao. Can’t wait for everyone in the comments to get a hip replacement in the future!!
My goth plate separated from the hip. Talk about the pain
wow i cant believe i have all these people that are just like me
Right !
im still in alot of pain... but im also a firefighter so i know that does not help. does anyone know if there is something i can do for the pain. i have stopped Firefighting activitys due to me being in college. Im on Alieve pain meds every day taking surgery strangth. and pain is over a 10 most days.
If anyone sees this you can reach out I had scfe both hips have screws dealt with this throughout middle school now I'm 18 and still have trouble
i had this scfe surgery this past summer. but only on 1 hip. i feel like i haven’t improved that much bc i feel like pain has gotten worse
I have this condition and the bone slipped over 60% because none of the doctors new what it was until I went to an orthopedic and then I was put in a wheel chair because I had it in both hips and had pins put in but since it slipped so much I need a hip replacement at 17 and I'm 14 now and have full arthritis in my hips and knees I haven't done gym in 3 years I can't do sports or physical activity until I get the hip replacement this really sucks I have had 3 surgeries the first two was where they put the pin in both hips and the next one was they took the pin out a cut off some of my hip bone that was bothering my in normal everyday actives like walking and sitting down now I can't run and do sports and I get bullied and call names like penguin a school because I waddle or limp because one of my legs slipped more than the other and one leg in shorter and it really sucks I would love to chat with other people my age who have this condition
+Carissa ! Hi, Carissa. My name is Roselyn and I have the same problem that you have. Im 11
Roselyn Camacho I got it at the same age as you, I hope you don't get it as bad, good luck :)
+RissaRamblesOn419 ! hey i got the condition too
Hi Samirah, im sorry for your problem. How old are you?
this exact thing happened to me..at first i thought it was my knee because that was the part that was hurting...but after 9 monthes of walking on it i finally met with dr. todd ritzman and he had told me what was going on and that i had to get same day surgery because it was slipped 91% off the hip. he gave me two surgery options one was he could go in and temperarly fix it and go in again in 6 months to completely fix it and that would be a 7 month recovery all together.. and the other other
When I was 12 I had 8 months of pain and limping so my grandma finally decided to bring me to the doctor and I had to have surgery the next day. They put 2 screws in my body one on each side. Currently, a year has passed and I'm 13 now but I still have pain but on the opposite side from where the original limping was. Does anyone know why?:0
just had this surgery. it sucks. i missed a month of school, and i am doing pretty well. i am just off my crutches. i have a question for you guys. how long did it take you o loose your crutches. took me a month and a half. please respond
I was in a wheelchair for 7 wks and crutches for just under 6wks
that how it all started for me but I hade 4 surgies since I was diagnose I am still on crutches and still can't walk on my legs
Rodneysha Parker 🤕
Be warry, im 15 years old, happened to me when i was 12 and just a couple months ago i found out that i now have avascular necrosis because of the surgery. Just saying it might happen to some of you too, get it checked out if it starts to hurt again
dumdum363 this happen to me too, the comment was 5 years ago so if by chance you see this, how is everything? Did u get a hip replacement? I have to get one in like 3 years kinda nervous
I had pins placed then after surgery I was in a wheelchair for a month then I was on crutches for 4 months
This happened to me when I was 12 and j had it fixed with a screw! I’ve been fine since but recently as a 28 year old I’m taking my health a bit more seriously. I’ve been really working on my mobility and everything seems to be improving except my hip mobility! Is the screw preventing my from improving my hip mobility?? There is not pain although sometimes it almost seems like I can feel the screw but that just might be a mental thing?!
I am experiencing this exact problem. Can you do low squats with your heel on the ground? That's incredibly difficult for me to do
My pins had to be removed from a accident and i have really bad range of motion and bad arthritic build up
I had the same thing but for me I was in a wheelchair cause I had both legs with scfe after my last soccer game
I had to get both of my hips done. It hurt so bad. It felt like I could move without it hurting. It now causes me to have knock knee and I'm having surgery the first week of summer to get them fixed. I gotta question tho. Is anybody else's leg still numb from the surgery that was three years ago??
Sydney Stewart umm in the beginning
10 years later and part of my leg is still numb yeah
@ThePikpikcarrot me too.
@pepadark incorrect
I had this before and when I went to school the next day a lot of seventh graders started saying that I was faking it and the even posted a video on instagram and Snapchat and it went on for like about 2 weeks
Ernesto Martinez my whole family thought I was attention seeking for a while until I was taken to a doctor and now I have a surgery scheduled in two days question: were u out in a wheel chair for a little after surgery or crutches jw
depends
Animal Tube the same happened to me too they thought that i am only joking its nothing after that they realized
YeH I just got back from the doctor. I also just found out I have a Skiffy (but I only weigh 84 pounds because of Crohn’s disease!) So it’s pretty weird.
Having any autoimmune disease actually puts you at risk for it!
This happened to me... I broke my hip.. my knee hurt for like a year...and I got a surgery so yea
Madi Marie can you just explain to me how your hip felt when u had to get surgery? i’ve had the worst hip pain for 3 weeks and i’m getting it X-rayed this week and it hurts when i move it and walk and even lay down. do you have any advice or possibly know what it is?
Boston messed up on my surgery
Jakari Glenn did you have dr.kramer?
No
What state is this hospital
Sorry for the late reply. We're in Akron, Ohio.
cool
How long was he on crutches for
Good morning. I'm sorry. We don't have that information, but he was doing well at the time of the video.
I went through an SCFE Surgery once and I was on crutches for 6 weeks
I would say if you have SCFE you'll be on crutches for circa 6 weeks after the surgery. But it just depends if you are feeling alright or not.
I had 2 surgrys
I was 9 when I walked for six weeks with my hip I have eds and all my joints come out i have had both hips pinned and in a week having another major hip surgery because I have grown too much. I am very worried and only 11. I am one of the youngest cases ever. Please like so they can see.
